Week in Review
October 23rd-29th
Welcome to Fragile Practice, where I attempt to make something of value out of stuff I have to read.
My future plan is to do longer-form original pieces on interesting topics or trends. For now, I'm going to make the weekly reviews habitual and see if I have any time left.
Tumblr media
Technology
OpenAI forms team to study ‘catastrophic’ AI risks, including nuclear threats - Tech Crunch; Kyle Wiggers
OpenAI launched a new research team called AI Safety and Security to investigate the potential harms of artificial intelligence focused on AI alignment, AI robustness, AI governance, and AI ethics.
Note: Same energy as “cigarette company funds medical research into smoking risks”.
Artists Allege Meta’s AI Data Deletion Request Process Is a ‘Fake PR Stunt’ - Wired; Kate Knibbs
Artists who participated in Meta’s Artificial Intelligence Artist Residency Program accused the company of failing to honor their data deletion requests and claim that Meta used their personal data to train its AI models without their consent.
Note: Someday we will stop being surprised that corporate activities without obvious profit motive are all fake PR stunts.
GM and Honda ditch plan to build cheaper electric vehicles - The Verge; Andrew J. Hawkins
General Motors and Honda cancel their joint venture to develop and produce cheaper electric vehicles for the US market, citing the chip shortage, rising costs of battery materials, and the changing market conditions.
Note: What are the odds this isn’t related to the 7 billion dollars the US government announced to create hydrogen hubs.
'AI divide' across the US leaves economists concerned - The Register; Thomas Claburn
A new study by economists from Harvard University and MIT reveals a significant gap in AI adoption and innovation across different regions in the US.
The study finds that AI usage is highest in California's Silicon Valley and the San Francisco Bay Area, but was also noted in Nashville, San Antonio, Las Vegas, New Orleans, San Diego, and Tampa, as well as Riverside, Louisville, Columbus, Austin, and Atlanta.
Nvidia to Challenge Intel With Arm-Based Processors for PCs - Bloomberg; Ian King
Nvidia is using Arm technology to develop CPUs that would challenge Intel processors in PCs, and which could go on sale as soon as 2025.
Note: I am far from an NVIDIA fan, but I’m stoked for any amount of new competition in the CPU space.
New tool lets artists fight AI image bots by hiding corrupt data in plain sight - Engadget; Sarah Fielding
A team at the University of Chicago created Nightshade, a tool that lets artists fight AI image bots by adding undetectable pixels into an image that can alter how a machine-learning model produces content and what that finished product looks like.
Nightshade is intended to protect artists work and has been tested on both Stable Diffusion and an in-house AI built by the researchers.
IBM's NorthPole chip runs AI-based image recognition 22 times faster than current chips - Tech Xplore; Bob Yirka
NorthPole combines the processing module and the data it uses in a two-dimensional array of memory blocks and interconnected CPUs, and is reportedly inspired by the human brain.
NorthPole can currently only run specialized AI processes and not training processes or large language models, but the researchers plan to test connecting multiple chips together to overcome this limitation.
Apple’s $130 Thunderbolt 4 cable could be worth it, as seen in X-ray CT scans - Ars Technica; Kevin Purdy
Note: These scans are super cool. And make me feel somewhat better about insisting on quality cables. A+.
Tumblr media
The Shifting Web
On-by-default video calls come to X, disable to retain your sanity - The Register; Brandon Vigliarolo
Video and audio calling is limited to anyone you follow or who is in your address book, if you granted X permission to comb through it.
Calling other users also requires that they’ve sent at least one direct message to you before.
Only premium users can place calls, but everyone can receive them.
Google Search Boss Says Company Invests to Avoid Becoming ‘Roadkill’ - The New York Times; Nico Grant
Google’s senior vice president overseeing search said that he sees a world of threats that could humble his company at any moment.
Google Maps is getting new AI-powered search updates, an enhanced navigation interface and more - Tech Crunch; Aisha Malik
Note: These AI recommender systems are going to be incredibly valuable advertising space. It is interesting that Apple decided to compete with Google in maps but not in basic search, but has so far not placed ads in the search results.
Reddit finally takes its API war where it belongs: to AI companies - Ars Technica; Scharon Harding
Reddit met with generative AI companies to negotiate a deal for being paid for its data, and may block crawlers if no deal is made soon.
Note: Google searches for info on Reddit often seem more effective than searching Reddit itself.  If they are unable to make a deal, and Reddit follows through, it will be a legitimate loss for discoverability but also an incredibly interesting experiment to see what Reddit is like without Google.
Bandcamp’s Entire Union Bargaining Team Was Laid Off - 404 Media; Emanuel Maiberg
Bandcamp’s new owner (Songtradr) offered jobs to just half of existing employees, with cuts disproportionately hitting union leaders. Every member of the union’s eight-person bargaining team was laid off, and 40 of the union's 67 members lost their jobs.
Songtradr spokesperson Lindsay Nahmiache claimed that the firm didn’t have access to union membership information.
Note: This just sucks. Bandcamp is rad, and it’s hard to imagine it continuing to be rad after this. I wonder if Epic had ideas for BC that didn’t work out.
Tumblr media
Surveillance & Digital Privacy
Mozilla Launches Annual Digital Privacy 'Creep-o-Meter'. This Year's Status:  'Very Creepy' - Slashdot
Mozilla gave the current state of digital privacy a 75.6/100, with 100 being the creepiest.
They measured security features, data collection, and data sharing practices of over 500 gadgets, apps, and cars to come up with their score.
Every car Mozilla tested failed to meet their privacy and security standards.
Note: It would be great if even one auto brand would take privacy seriously.
EPIC Testifies in Support of Massachusetts Data Privacy and Protection Act -Electronic Privacy Information Center (EPIC)
Massachusetts version of ADPPA.
Note: While it may warm my dead heart to see any online privacy protections in law, scrambling to do so in response to generative AI is unlikely to protect Americans in any meaningful way from the surveillance driven form of capitalism we’ve all been living under for decades.
Complex Spy Platform StripedFly Bites 1M Victims - Dark Reading
StripedFly is a complex platform disguised as a cryptominer and evaded detection for six years by using a custom version of EternalBlue exploit, a built-in Tor network tunnel, and trusted services like GitLab, GitHub, and Bitbucket to communicate with C2 servers and update its functionality.
iPhones have been exposing your unique MAC despite Apple's promises otherwise - Ars Technica
A privacy feature which claimed to hide the Wi-Fi MAC address of iOS devices when joining a network was broken since iOS 14, and was finally patched in 17.1, released on Wednesday.
Note: I imagine this bug was reported a while ago, but wasn’t publically reported until the fix was released as a term of apple’s bug bounty program.
What the !#@% is a Passkey? - Electronic Frontier Foundation
Note: I welcome our passkey overlords.

Popular ChatGPT & Developing Oracle
Preface: The emergence of ChatGPT symbolizes a new industrial revolution about “smartness”. Then, the application of the oracle machine represents the Columbus journey of the blockchain transformation of “data”.
“Who are you?”
“I am a large language model trained by OpenAI. Help people answer questions and provide information. Since I am a computer program, I can’t perceive or think, and can only answer questions with existing data. If you have any questions , please let me know anytime.”
ChatGPT: mining data value
ChatGPT is the hottest topic recently. According to Fortune, ChatGPT reached a goal that took Facebook 10 months to reach — more than 1 million users — just five days after its release. On February 1st, ChatGPT monthly active users exceeded 100 million. IG took two years to achieve this data, TikTok took 9 months, and ChatGPT only took 60 days.
The degree of popularity is evident.
As the crystallization of the technology of the times, ChatGPT brings an unpredictable revolution. AIGC (AI Generated Content) represented by ChatGPT will change the world.
Bill Gates also said : The significance of the emergence of ChatGPT is no less than the birth of PC and the Internet.
Tumblr media
With the birth of ChatGPT, its increasingly powerful AIGC (AI Generated Content) capabilities have caused many people to fall into a “career crisis”. Some people worry that AI will replace humans. In fact, it is not the first time that the talk of AI replacing human work has appeared, and it first appeared a few years ago.
According to the report “Unemployment and Employment: Labor Transformation in the Era of Automation” released by McKinsey Global Institute in December 2017, by 2030, it is conservatively estimated that 15% of the world’s people will change jobs due to the development of AI technology, and radical estimates will affect 30% of the global population, China expects that tens of millions to hundreds of millions of people will need to be re-employed by then.
When people still didn’t care about the predictions in the report, in September 2022, in the digital category of the Colorado State Fair art competition, the AI painting “Space Opera House” won the first place in one fell swoop, sparking once again a huge debate about whether AI can replace humans. Today, the emergence of ChatGPT has triggered a global discussion on the anxiety of occupational survival arising from the “threat” of AI to employment.
There is no doubt that ChatGPT is a masterpiece of major breakthroughs in the current artificial intelligence field. It is undeniable that ChatGPT still has many problems. Although ChatGPT is a large language model based on statistical laws and has a powerful language talent, it can only make associations and cannot complete “logical reasoning”. In this light, ChatGPT tends to produce convincing responses, which may contain “generated” factual errors, misrepresentations, and faulty data, as a natural language processing model, unaware of tens of petabytes of unsupervised training What is a “fact” in the data is more like a slippery “virtual assistant”.
In addition, during the training process, excessive “instruction” knowledge is injected in order to recognize human instructions. ChatGPT will be very sensitive to the “instruction” itself, and at the same time, it will not recognize context-independent ambiguous words that require “factual basis” to make judgments.
Perhaps, for most people ChatGPT is a qualified assistant, because it is proficient in all skills about human language(Or ChatGPT will be proficient in the foreseeable future), such as summarizing, translating, writing articles, style correction, translating, polishing, writing code, etc. Therefore, if workers engaged in these jobs cannot master the skills of using ChatGPT as an assistant, they may be the first to be replaced by AI.
In a nutshell, ChatGPT is a super tool, not super intelligence, and will not replace humans, but upgrade the industry. It will greatly lower the barriers to creativity and execution, complementing humans.
The CEO of WPP, the world’s largest advertising group, said: It is never AI that takes your job, but other people with AI tools.
AI has been developed for so many years, so why can ChatGPT become the dark horse of AI?
Tumblr media
In the final analysis, it comes from the “utilization” of data.
At present, the major research direction of artificial intelligence is the NLP task (Natural Language Processing), that is, the machine must understand human language. And NL has two major directions, one is Google’s two-way (BERT) technology, and the other is OpenAI’s autoregressive (GPT) technology.
As early as June 2018, OpenAI proposed the first-generation GPT model. In October of the same year, Google announced the BERT model, which refreshed almost all the best records in the field of natural language processing, and opened the era of pre-training large models.
In the following four years, pre-trained language models such as BERT and GPT (GPT-1 and GPT-2, the predecessor of ChatGPT) have become the current technical trend in the field of natural language processing. These model parameters range from 300 million to 1.75 trillion, which is why they are called Large Language Model.
The essence of pre-training large models is to use larger models and more data to find a more general “language model” for humans. It is precisely because of this that large language models including BERT and GPT have obtained a considerable amount of vocabulary, syntax and semantic knowledge during the pre-training process, and only need a small amount of labeled data to refine the model to complete various tasks. such natural language tasks.
Tumblr media
By mining the value of “data” to endow the scene with ecology, is this description very similar to “oracle machine”? However, ChatGPT is still a Web2.0 product with certain limitations.
If it is said that ChatGPT and AIGC completely disregard sovereignty, grab global data for training without any scruples, and finally evolve their own “super brain”. Then, the fundamental value of blockchain technology is “decentralization”, hoping to break this monopoly and reconstruct a new distributed network, so that ordinary people can regain their own data sovereignty.
Oracles: Linking Data Bridges
When it comes to blockchain, most people must think of Bitcoin, Ethereum, token speculation, mining, DeFi, NFT, and some Web3.0 empowerment scenarios such as GameFi and SocailFi that rely on concept packaging. However, how to make data “AI” is to let the “blockchain” understand the predictions of the real world and add them to the ecological empowerment of the scene. The oracle machine is very important, just like the current ChatGPT.
We all know that oracles and blockchains are very closely related. In blockchain, smart contracts can perform various operations such as money management, data storage, etc. However, smart contracts have no knowledge of events happening in the real world, which requires oracles. Because the oracle machine is a data bridge connecting the real world and the blockchain, it can convert events that occur in the real world into data that can be used in smart contracts.
In simple terms, oracles allow deterministic smart contracts to “react” to an uncertain external world. And isn’t ChatGPT just a corresponding “reaction” to the accessed data?
Among them, the main function of the oracle machine is to obtain and verify external data and input it into the blockchain. They can obtain data in a variety of ways, such as APIs, sensors, web crawlers, etc. In terms of verifying data, the oracle needs to ensure the authenticity and accuracy of the data.
Tumblr media
Therefore, oracles should be carefully designed and tested to ensure reliable data. The verification process includes digital signatures, encryption algorithms, etc. However, the development of oracles faces challenges, and the biggest challenge is to ensure the reliability of data. The oracle machine needs to obtain a large amount of data and verify it.
If the blockchain is compared to a “black box”, then the oracle machine is a ray of light in the dark, illuminating the bit world.
The current blockchain ecology is still in its infancy. Compared with traditional industries, except for some achievements in the financial field, others are still a little barren. It still takes a long time to develop the utilization, retrieval, mining, and analysis of data.
Although many mainstream oracle public chains such as ChainLink, PlugChain, Oraclize, UMA, DIA, and API3 have emerged in the market, and have their own breakthroughs and innovations in the technical field, a closer look at ecological development, scene empowerment, and commercial applications, There is still a long way to go.
It’s like ChatGPT needs to be smarter, it needs more and larger data training. If the blockchain world needs to be smarter, the oracle machine’s data reading, transmission, and capture are required to be more accurate and efficient.
At the same time, in terms of more decentralization, single-source APIs are easily cracked and operated, and centralized oracles seem useless. Therefore, nodes that focus on decentralized oracle networks like ChainLink, PlugChain, and NEST have higher accuracy in capturing data. Because their network nodes are obtained from multiple sources, the data error rate is reduced through data aggregation weighting.
Tumblr media
By the way, in terms of scalability, PlugChain has the ability to process 100,000 transactions per second with high throughput, and the gas fee is much lower than other public chains. Because of this, data delay is almost eliminated, more accurate data can be obtained, and price deviation and slippage are reduced. Also in terms of operability, PlugChain is compatible with mainstream public chains such as Ethereum, Cosmos, Polygon, Cardano, Avalanche, and BSC. It also performs extremely well on aggregated cross-chains.
In short, as a bridge connecting the real world and the blockchain, the oracle machine has great significance and potential. Not only can they help smart contracts perform various tasks better, but also solve real-world problems. At the same time, with the advancement of technology, the future of oracles will be broad.
Conclusion: Finally, when comparing ChatGPT and oracle machines, it is not difficult to find a core point: the value of both is the extraction of “data value”, the empowerment of “data ecology”, and the support of “scenario application”. drive. The only difference is that one is in Web2.0 and the other is in Web3.0. With the rapid development of technology, the boundary between Web2.0 and Web3.0 will become more and more blurred. When the oracle connects the data of the physical world to the bit world, the AI computing power represented by ChatGPT will continue to tap the “data potential”. “.
At that time, the ecology of Web3.0 is no longer barren, and it is no different from the real world. That is the real Metaverse.

4 benefits of automating a manual process in your business
Automation unlocks opportunities for a more efficient, productive and flexible work model. By automating manual processes, you can drive better decision making and resource allocation, as well as boost employee productivity and customer satisfaction.
Let’s take a closer look at some of the benefits of automating a manual process:
Increases employee morale
Gives you time back
Eliminates errors
Helps you make accurate data-driven decisions
1|Increases employee morale
Mundane and repetitive tasks are the bane of every employee’s existence. By automating these processes, you can free up their time and let them focus on the creative and fulfilling tasks.
In doing so, they can learn more about different areas of your business and develop into more well-rounded workers. Automation can also create new, higher level jobs which require an advanced skillset. This will make your teams feel more inclined to embrace new things and master new skills.
2|Gives you time back
For example, while your human workers are sleeping, you can run tasks in the middle of the night so they’re ready for when staff arrive in the morning. By handling larger workloads, you can carry out tasks in advance rather than just-in-time.
Let’s say you’ve got an order that comes in on Monday and needs to be shipped by Wednesday. Automation can often help you by getting it sent by Tuesday, helping your business to perform above its previous limits.
3|Eliminates errors
If you’re using manual processes, the chances of errors happening are almost inevitable. Also, the higher number of humans involved in the process, the higher the chances mistakes will be made, especially with mundane tasks like data entry.
Automating your processes gives you consistency and the security that – as long as you’ve set up your systems correctly – you’ll always receive the desired results.
4|Helps you make accurate data-driven decisions
By combining automation with artificial intelligence (AI), you can gain access to information that wouldn’t normally be easily available. For example, data in the form of analytics and reports can provide greater insights into your processes, helping you make better and more informed decisions.
Plus, the higher degree of precision that comes with implementing AI means you’ll be making less errors, which helps improve the quality of your products and services.
Maximize your automation benefits by working with a digital consultancy
To truly get the most out of your automation-influenced benefits, you should consider partnering with a digital consultancy. The right consultancy will have years of expertise in managing automation-related projects, from implementing a piece of software and integrating it with your other business systems to providing aftercare support.
For example, at Columbus, we have over 30 years of experience in implementing, managing and maintaining technology solutions. We spend more than 1,700,000 hours consulting every year, so it’s safe to say we’re experts and thought leaders when it comes to maximizing the potential of your business automation.
We can help you:
Understand the importance of putting value first
Technology like automation is a powerful tool that can drive business transformation. But technology on its own isn’t enough. You need to adopt the right mindset and culture where your new digital tech will thrive.
And that involves effectively communicating the value of transformation to your team (in particular your key stakeholders), so they understand the reasons behind the change and what’s needed for it to go ahead.

Smart Cities by Caroline Law
Two weeks ago, I presented on the topic of smart cities and how transportation is changing within a city to reach this goal. A smart city is a city that incorporates information and communication technologies (ICT) to enhance the quality and performance of urban services. Some examples of the technologies that are used within a smart city are the Internet of Things (IoT), sensors, artificial intelligence, and new forms of energy. I want to devote this blog post to provide some examples of various cities across the world that are leaders in the progress of creating a smart city.
Tumblr media
As I mentioned, Columbus, Ohio won the USDOT Smart City Challenge in 2015. They were granted $50 million to help fund the various plans the city proposed. Columbus developed its own website to document the challenges, success, and failures the city experienced throughout the process. The city described its goals in 2015 were to integrate an intelligent transportation system, connected vehicles, automated vehicles, and a smart Columbus Operating System into the transportation network. Although many of the plans the city has proposed are still in the stage of being approved, the Smart Columbus Operating System has various plans set forth to help create a web-based, dynamic, governed data delivery platform. The operating system will be an open-data technology that will allow users to make better decisions. Some examples of their plan to create this operating system include creating a connected vehicle environment specifically in heavily congested areas that are subject to crashes as well as a plan to introduce connected electric autonomous vehicles that will connect underserved public transit areas with an alternative mode of transportation. One issue that we discussed briefly in class were security and privacy concerns as a result of the government collecting so much data. The Smart Columbus committee released a 116-page document that outlines what data will be collected, how it will be used and stored, and various controls they have in place to ensure the security of the data.
Tumblr media
One of the most well-known examples of a smart city is Singapore. The city is ranked number one for the quality of public transportation. It has smart connected traffic solutions that help to reduce the total number of vehicles on its roads. The city is also investing in a project known as Vehicle to Everything, or V2X for short. This project has two parts: vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-infrastructure. The combination of these two aspects allows the city of Singapore to communicate with almost everything in its surroundings.   One reason that explains why Singapore has been able to achieve so many incredible advances in becoming a smart city is because of its government. The government invests at least 1% of its GDP into the research and development of these projects. The push from a government is obviously beneficial to the creation of a smart city as Singapore has high government support and now, through the 2015 Smart City Challenge, the US Department of Transportation, Columbus is also advancing towards a smart city. After looking at different cities and how they are taking steps to become a smart city, I was curious to see what Boston was doing. Although we are not as invested as cities like Columbus or Singapore, I found that there were some initiatives occurring throughout the city. Boston is actively testing the use of autonomous vehicles on its streets. In a partnership with Lyft, the company introduced a line of self-driving cars in the Seaport district.

Additionally, as we talked about in class the other day, Boston is introducing bike sharing stations such as Hubway and Lime that provide residents with an alternative, eco-friendly source of transportation. In fact, I found Boston’s submission to the USDOT Smart City Challenge in 2015 where they proposed 5 things: connected and electric vehicles, key to the city, zoning by the hour, micro navigation, and lastly, autonomy. Technology isn’t something that cities should be scared of. There are numerous ways in which technology, when implemented correctly, can solve the problems a city is experiencing. I am a proponent of technological advances in the city because they will help to make our lives easier and safer.

Crossing the Parallel Universe
Tumblr media
What is a parallel universe? Let's make an analogy. Imagine that in another time and space, all aspects of the world are the same as ours, but the difference is that Columbus in that time and space did not go sailing, or Hitler became a great artist, so the historical development of that society shows a parallel, but completely different trajectory from ours. This is the parallel universe.
Have you ever wondered if there is another "you" in a universe billions of light years away? Maybe you made different choices at key points in your life, so now you are on a completely different path; maybe you have regrets, if God could give you a chance to start over, would you be willing to accept? In the past, we would say, unfortunately, there is no if in life. But this book tells us, in the distant space and time beyond, infinite number of you, is facing the same life choices.
Maybe the parallel universe is not just a concept in science fiction, but real.
The book's author, Max Tegmark, was born in Sweden and is a tenured professor of physics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He has written a best-selling book that explores artificial intelligence, Life 3.0, and founded the A.I.-related Future of Life Institute. However, he has another important identity as a leading expert in the study of parallel universe theory. In his book, Tegmark writes that years ago, parallel universes were just a somewhat bizarre concept, but since the 21st century, the scientific community has begun to take the topic seriously. Most have concluded that parallel universes definitely exist, that there is nothing left to doubt, and that the real question is how many layers there are, and how many types of parallel universes there are. This may sound crazy, but science has advanced to the point where we can indeed use cutting-edge knowledge of physics and cosmology to explain the parallel space-time of science fiction!
Professor Tegmark stands at the frontiers of physics and the boundaries of the universe to show us the theory of a four-layer multiverse. He tells us that the universe we live in is only a small corner of the vast space, and the rest of the universe, hidden in places that we cannot see with our naked eyes, and even technology cannot detect. In addition to parallel universes, this book involves a large number of complex cosmological theories, including dark matter and dark energy, quantum mechanics, mathematical structure, etc. The difficulty factor is very high.
Next, I will explain this book to you in two parts. In the first part, I will introduce you to the lowest level of theoretical support for the parallel universe model, which is the bursting theory. If you want to understand parallel universes, the burst expansion theory is our necessary theoretical knowledge. On this basis, in the second part, I will talk to you in detail about what the four-layer multiverse proposed by Tegmark really is. After reading this book, my biggest feeling is that the rapidly changing scientific research is overturning our perceptions.

THIS DAY IN HISTORY
DECEMBER 22,1956
First gorilla born in captivity
On December 22, 1956, a baby gorilla named Colo enters the world at the Columbus Zoo in Ohio, becoming the first-ever gorilla born in captivity. Weighing in at approximately 4 pounds, Colo, a western lowland gorilla whose name was a combination of Columbus and Ohio, was the daughter of Millie and Mac, two gorillas captured in French Cameroon, Africa, who were brought to the Columbus Zoo in 1951. Before Colo’s birth, gorillas found at zoos were caught in the wild, often by brutal means. In order to capture a gorilla when it was young and therefore still small enough to handle, hunters frequently had to kill the gorilla’s parents and other family members.
Gorillas are peaceful, intelligent animals, native to Africa, who live in small groups led by one adult male, known as a silverback. There are three subspecies of gorilla: western lowland, eastern lowland and mountain. The subspecies are similar and the majority of gorillas in captivity are western lowland. Gorillas are vegetarians whose only natural enemy is the humans who hunt them. On average, a gorilla lives to 35 years in the wild and 50 years in captivity.
At the time Colo was born, captive gorillas often never learned parenting skills from their own parents in the wild, so the Columbus Zoo built her a nursery and she was reared by zookeepers. In the years since Colo’s arrival, zookeepers have developed habitats that simulate a gorilla’s natural environment and many captive-born gorillas are now raised by their mothers. In situations where this doesn’t work, zoos have created surrogacy programs, in which the infants are briefly cared for by humans and then handed over to other gorillas to raise.
Colo, who generated enormous public interest, went on to become a mother, grandmother, and in 1996, a great-grandmother to Timu, the first surviving infant gorilla conceived by artificial insemination. Timu gave birth to her first baby in 2003.
Today, there are approximately 750 gorillas in captivity around the world and an estimated 100,000 lowland gorillas (and far fewer mountain gorillas) remaining in the wild. Most zoos are active in captive breeding programs and have agreed not to buy gorillas born in the wild.
Colo died in 2017.

A global competition of smart cities highlights the rise of AI in China
A global competition of smart cities highlights the rise of AI in China
https://theministerofcapitalism.com/blog/a-global-competition-of-smart-cities-highlights-the-rise-of-ai-in-china/
Tumblr media
Four years ago the organizers created the international AI City Challenge to stimulate the development of artificial intelligence for real-world scenarios such as counting vehicles traveling through intersections or detecting highway accidents.
In the early years, teams representing American companies or universities took the top spots in the competition. Last year, Chinese companies won three out of four competitions.
Last week, Chinese technology giants Alibaba i Baidu swept the AI City Challenge, beating competitors from nearly 40 nations. Chinese companies or universities ranked first and second in all five categories. Tik Tok creator ByteDance took second place in a competition to identify traffic accidents or stopped vehicles from highway videofeeds.
The results reflect years of Chinese government investment in smart cities. Hundreds of Chinese cities have pilot programs, and according to some estimates, China has half of the world’s smart cities. The diffusion of edge computing, cameras and sensors through 5G wireless connections are expected to accelerate the use of smart city and surveillance technology.
The technology shown in these competitions can be useful for urban planners, but it can also facilitate invasive surveillance. Counting the number of cars on the road helps civic engineers understand the resources needed to support roads and bridges, but tracking a vehicle across multiple live feed channels is a powerful form of surveillance. . One of the AI City Challenge competitions asked participants to identify the cars in videofeeds; for the first time this year, the descriptions were in normal language, such as “a blue Jeep goes straight down a winding road behind a red van.”
Competition comes at a time of greater technological nationalism and tension between the US and China, and growing concern for the powers of AI. The Carnegie Endowment for International Peace in 2019 defined China as one of the world’s leading AI surveillance engines. The group said China and the United States were the two main exporters of technology. Last month, the Biden administration expanded the blacklist initiated by the Trump administration to about 60 Chinese companies that had no chance of receiving investments from U.S. financiers. Also in recent weeks, the U.S. Senate passed the Competition and innovation law, providing billions of investments in chips, AI and supply chain reliability. It also calls for investments in smart cities, including expanding a smart city partnership with Southeast Asian nations (excluding China).
China’s domination over the smart city challenge may come with an asterisk. John Garofolo, a U.S. government official involved in the competition, says he noticed fewer U.S. teams this year. Organizers say they do not track participants by country.
Stan Caldwell is executive director of Mobility21, a Carnegie Mellon University project that helps develop smart cities in Pittsburgh. Caldwell regrets that China is investing twice as much as the United States in research and development as part of GDP, which he calls key to staying competitive in emerging technology areas.
He says AI researchers in the United States can also compete for government grants like the National Science Foundation’s Civic Innovation Challenge or the Department of Transportation’s Smart City Challenge. A report released last month found that a $ 50 million DOT grant in the city of Columbus, Ohio, never completely delivered with the promise of building the smart city of the future.
“We want technologies to be developed, because we want to improve safety, efficiency and sustainability. But, selfishly, we also want this technology to develop here and improve our economy, ”says Caldwell.
Alibaba and Baidu spokesmen declined to comment, but advances in smart city challenges may help fuel the business offerings of both companies. Alibaba’s City Brain tracks more than 1,000 traffic lights in the company’s hometown, Hangzhou, a city of 10 million people. A pilot program found that City Brain congestion reduction and helped pave the way for emergency officers.

Popular Technology Stories That Can Impact Your Business
New Post has been published on https://www.aheliotech.com/blog/popular-technology-stories/
Popular Technology Stories That Can Impact Your Business
Some technology news stories are cool to read, but don’t really impact a business owner’s operations in any significant way. But others can give them insights that help them stay ahead of new advances and security threats.
2020 and the first week of 2021 have brought a lot in the way of technology news, but which news stories can inform your policies?
We’ll go through several of the popular tech stories of recent months below and connect them to things like your own company’s cybersecurity and cloud services, to give you actionable insights.
Amazon Sidewalk Launches
Amazon announced that its new shared neighborhood network was launching by the end of 2020. This creates an entirely new paradigm in IoT devices and how technology companies “borrow” user assets to power their own services.
Amazon Sidewalk is a low-bandwidth network created by Amazon to increase the outdoor range of connectivity for devices like Ring security cameras and Echo smart speakers.
The controversial part is that Amazon opted in compatible devices beginning at the end of last year without user’s taking any action. The network uses bandwidth and data from those opted in device networks to create an Amazon network for its approved devices only.
How this impacts your business:
This could pose a security risk for offices that use any opted-in devices as well as remote employee networks. The service is brand new, and Amazon is inviting 3rd party developers to make devices that can connect, which increases the security risk.
If users don’t want to be part of the network, they need to specially opt-out in their Alexa app settings.
TikTok’s Potential Ban in the U.S.
The popular video social app TikTok was in the news much of 2020 due to the parent company of the app being located in China and concerns about that government using the app for espionage or tracking of citizens.
Counties like India banned the app and the U.S. also is intending to do the same, citing national security concerns. The potential TikTok ban is currently going through the appeals court system to determine whether or not the app will be blocked from being used in the country.
How this impacts your business:
Employers are increasingly becoming aware of the need to secure mobile devices that may share personal and work data on the same device. Some apps can read and connect to data on a device outside the app itself. (This was one of the concerns with TikTok.)
If you don’t already have one, it’s important to put endpoint device security and management in place that keeps any work information on a device protected from potentially dangerous apps that might be on the same smartphone.
Zoom Bombing Becomes a New Term (and Problem)
The pandemic brought on an unprecedented rise in video conferencing as offices around the country were forced to close and conduct business virtually.
Zoom became a star because of its ease of use, being used by businesses, schools, and governments.
This led to a new cybersecurity phenomenon called “Zoom Bombing,” which is when uninvited people show up in a video conference to disrupt it by shouting obscenities and worse.
In August of 2020, Capital University had its virtual welcome for new students Zoom Bombed by someone showing inappropriate images and shouting obscenities.
Video conference providers quickly scrambled to make their platforms default to more secure settings and add ways to keep this from happening to users.
How this impacts your business:
The pandemic has changed the way business is conducted in multiple ways, which puts pressure on companies to look at IT security in a different way. They need to think beyond on-premises security to virtual security.
This includes securing audio/video conferencing, cloud storage, remote networks, and more.
The Rise of AI Use in Common Applications
When you think of AI and machine learning being used, it often conjures up images of some large enterprise corporation on the cutting edge of some new technology.
But if you use Microsoft Word in Microsoft 365, then you’re already using AI. Artificial Intelligence is becoming a programming must in the tools we use every day.
In Microsoft 365, it powers things like Editor and Presenter Coach. If you use Adobe Photoshop, then you were most likely blown away by the new AI advances released during Adobe’s 2020 MAX event, which includes the ability to age or make younger people photos, add smiles, and more at the click of a button.
How this impacts your business:
AI is most likely already impacting your business in ways you didn’t realize through the tools you use each day. It’s important to be mindful of how AI is deployed in applications and what it can enable, so you can make the most of it.
Is Your Business Ready to Hit the Ground Running in 2021?
From advanced cybersecurity protections for remote teams to AI-powered virtualization, AhelioTech can help your Columbus area business be ready for the future.

Using artificial intelligence to find new uses for existing medications
Using artificial intelligence to find new uses for existing medications
COLUMBUS, Ohio – Scientists have developed a machine-learning method that crunches massive amounts of data to help determine which existing medications could improve outcomes in diseases for which they are not prescribed. The intent of this work is to speed up drug repurposing, which is not a new concept – think Botox injections, first approved to treat crossed eyes and now a migraine treatment…
