Scandal in Salisbury
Recently I had a rare opportunity to visit Church House in Salisbury. Used for administration of the diocese today, it is an attractive medieval/post-medieval building retaining many original features, and has an interesting but sometimes rather murky past. Originally it was built in the 15th century by a merchant called William Lightfoot, and was known in that era as The Falcon. However, later…

It's time to learn from Letters from Watson "What John Rance Had to Tell."
But first, Holmes explains some of his deductions. He does not explain what the long fingernails on the right hand mean.
And he comes out with what is for me, as a modern reader, a doozy:
The A [in RACHE], if you noticed, was printed somewhat after the German fashion. Now, a real German invariably prints in the Latin character, so that we may safely say that this was not written by one, but by a clumsy imitator who overdid his part. It was simply a ruse to divert inquiry into a wrong channel.
What? A German fashion of writing?
OKAY. It turns out that, prior to World War II, German was written in different scripts than other European languages, which the University of Wisconsin has documented for us because German immigrants continued to use them.
Here are a snipper of UW's examples of Kurrent and Sütterlin, as well as capital letters from Wikimedia's Fraktur.
Tumblr media
The Fraktur A looks so much like a U that I can't believe Lestrade wouldn't have read the word as "ruche" and decided the victim was a dressmaker.
Calligrascapes gives examples of Spencerian (U.S.) and Copperplate (UK) handwriting of the late Victorian period here. Lower-case A looks almost the same as in Kurrent. I feel like our wall-scrawler must have used Sütterlin.
That our killer is familiar with a German A implies he either reads German comfortably or corresponds regularly with people of German ancestry. Since Holmes says "a real German" would use Latin letters (so he corresponds with Germans or visits Germany), killer is presumably familiar with a German-American community, which is certainly plausible if he's from Ohio (or Pennsylvania, or much of the Upper Midwest).
Whew.
Holmes' passing mention of going "to Halle's concert to see Norman Neruda" is about seeing Czech violinist Wilma Norman-Neruda perform at an occasion organized by Anglo-German pianist and conductor Sir Charles Hallé (also Norman-Neruda's future second husband).
Finally, we arrive at the home of Constable Rance. Last episode, it was given as Audley Court, Kennington Toll Gate. The latter part is a real place, the site of a toll gate that was demolished about 15 years before the time of the story. Here's an old photo shared by The Underground Map.
Tumblr media
Today the site of the toll gate is a plaza with public art.
The "long succession of dingy streets and dreary by-ways" suggests the cab ride was to somewhere near the old toll gate site (possibly just west of St. Mark's Church, which is the tower in the background), rather than directly to the triangle of land where it sat. There's not a lot of space right there, due to Kennington Park, which has a long history as a public common and site of hangings.
I suspect any police constable trying to live in London today would sympathize with Rance's living in a "sordid dwelling." Rance also takes bribes.
Rance is, of course, astonished by Holmes' powers of deduction. But what was the "drunk" man singing? I was sure in my heart that "Columbine" was "Columbia" (an old-fangled term for the United States) and searching for that made it possible to cheat when I Heard of Sherlock's discussion of this matter came up in my search results. It's "Columbia, Gem of the Ocean." Here's an audio file.
“Had he a whip in his hand?”
Where on earth did a whip come from? We've no such wounds on the victim, and the killer came with him in a cab.
I might not have gone but for you, and so have missed the finest study I ever came across: a study in scarlet, eh? Why shouldn’t we use a little art jargon. There’s the scarlet thread of murder running through the colourless skein of life, and our duty is to unravel it, and isolate it, and expose every inch of it.
And... title drop! If this is the fates weaving the tapestry of life, surely it says something about Holmes that all the other threads are colorless besides murder.

The appearance of imminent evangelical victory was deceptive. Although the twin crises of 1536-7 had been the springboard for evangelical ascendancy in the short term, in the long term they had damaged the cause of reform. As a result of the Boleyn affair Cromwell's grip on the council had been weakened. The execution of Anne's brother Rochford had removed his principal noble supporter there, the man best placed to offset the anti-Cromwellian feelings of conservative noblemen like the Duke of Norfolk. Certainly, he still had Foxe, Cranmer, and Audley, but Foxe had died a couple of weeks before the arrival of the German ambassadors in May 1538, Cranmer was of limited value as a political operator [sans Anne Boleyn] and Audley was too politically weak. At court, Cromwell's faction was rather more secure, but even there the lack of a close alliance with the Queen, the kind he had enjoyed with Anne, most probably weakened him, too. Finally, the long-term situation of the evangelicals in the Church had been shaken by the Pilgrimage of Grace. Although Cromwell had worked to pack it with fellow evangelicals, the Pilgrimage of Grace had sown the first seeds of doubt as to the wisdom of continued reform. The Bishops' Book of 1537, diluting as it did the crypto-Protestantism of the Ten Articles of the previous year, was the first sign that the Pilgrims had achieved some success in slowing the pace of reform.

Hey random question but what is the main architectural style of Winchester? What has inspired you IRL?
Thank you for asking! I love this question omg
I'm actually an art historian, so I put a lot of thought (probably too much) into the art and architecture of Winchester.
The majority of the historical architecture in Winchester is in the Palladian, Neo-Palladian and Georgian styles. There are a few older buildings/palaces/churches that are built in the Gothic style, but most of the architecture is Palladian and Georgian. I also draw heavily from Georgian and regency era interior design styles for my more stately sets. Canonically all of the palaces and royal houses in Winchester are in a variety of different architectural styles to reflect the idea that over the years the royals built/acquired different homes that were built in different eras and styles. For example, the main palace was built in a English Baroque style, their summer palace (and Victoria's favorite house) is Palladian, their country house is Georgian, and their ski house is more contemporary. But if you want to see a specific palace or style let me know!
In terms of inspiration, I'm mostly inspired by English manor homes like Chatsworth, Anmer, Audley End, Belton and others!

As soon as I entered this beautiful (deconsecrated) building, John 2:13-17 came to mind: “Now the Passover of the Jews was at hand, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. And He found in the temple those who sold oxen and sheep and doves, and the money changers doing business. When He had made a whip of cords, He drove them all out of the temple, with the sheep and the oxen, and poured out the changers’ money and overturned the tables. And He said to those who sold doves, “Take these things away! Do not make My Father’s house a house of merchandise!” Then His disciples remembered that it was written, “Zeal for Your house has eaten Me up.” I enjoyed the Gin and Gelato but I couldn’t help but admire the details. I’m not clued up in architectural matters but I like this style of neo-classical / gothic design. (at St Marks Church North Audley Street) https://www.instagram.com/p/Ce93lW2IVfx/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Sampler with compound division equation
mid-19th century
Mary Ann Sadler
We may never know what inspired nine-year-old Mary Ann Sadler to convert her mathematics equation into embroidered form. The problem is worked on the basis of the British monetary system using British pounds, shillings, pence (pennies) and farthings. Mary Ann was a student at St. Mark’s School, which was located next to St. Marks’s church on North Audley Street off of Grosvenor Square, near Hyde Park. The school opened in 1831 with the goal of providing the poorer children of the parish with an education at the elementary school level, and it operated in the original building until 1904.

THE CAVALCADE OF AMERICA:  “SKYLARK SONG”
June 21, 1948
Tumblr media
The Cavalcade of America ran on NBC Radio from 1935 to 1953. It featured events from American history, usually dramatizing the positive aspects of the nation’s past. Additionally, the show attempted to end criticism of its sponsor, the Du Pont Company due to negative publicity from profiting by producing gunpowder during World War I.
Tumblr media
Throughout the years, actors and actresses from Broadway and Hollywood were featured. The show was broadcast live from the Longacre Theatre in NYC and repeated later in the day.
Tumblr media
In 1952, the series was transferred to NBC television and lasted until 1957, nearly identical to the run of “I Love Lucy” on CBS. For six months the radio and television versions also overlapped. The TV version featured “Lucy” actors Robert Foulk, Dayton Lummis, Byron Foulger, Maurice Marsac, Ross Elliott, Roy Roberts, Hayden Rorke, Pierre Watkin, Will Wright, Nestor Paiva, Joi Lansing, Dorothea Wolbert, Don Rickles, Burt Mustin, Lurene Tuttle, Gladys Hurlbut, Paul Picerni, Richard Reeves, James Flavin, Larry J. Blake, Peter Graves, Rhodes Reason, Irving Bacon, Milton Frome, Eleanor Audley, Joe Mell, Mary Ellen Kay, Mario Siletti, John Banner, Harry Bartell, Robert Carson, William Fawcett, Mabel Paige, June Whitley Taylor, Iron Eyes Cody, Strother Martin, Norma Varden, Madge Blake, Ellen Corby, Dick Elliott, Vivi Janiss, Ida Moore, Elizabeth Patterson, Frank J. Scannell, Herb Vigran, and William Schallert.
Synopsis: "Skylark Song" by Virginia Radcliff is the story of Grace Moore,  charting her climb from a small southern church choir to star of the Metropolitan Opera House in New York City.
Tumblr media
Grace Moore (December 5, 1898 – January 26, 1947) was an operatic soprano and actress in musical theatre and film. Born in Slabtown, Tennessee, she was nicknamed the "Tennessee Nightingale." Her films helped to popularize opera by bringing it to a larger audience. She was nominated for the Academy Award for  for her performance in One Night of Love. In 1947, Moore died in a plane crash at the age of 48. She published her autobiography in 1944 titled You're Only Human Once.
Tumblr media
In 1953, a film about her life was released titled So This Is Love starring Kathryn Grayson and Lucy’s friend Merv Griffin. The movie featured “Lucy” players Herb Vigran, Victorio Bonanova, Moroni Olsen, Mario Siletti, Ray Kellogg, Olin Howland, Tristram Coffin, Jack Chefe, and Barbara Pepper as Fat Girl with Sailor in Nightclub!
Tumblr media
Lucille Ball (Grace Moore) may be the last person on earth one would consider to play one of the most famous opera singers of all time - but this was radio - and recordings of Grace Moore and studio singers were used to supplement the program. Ball affects a slight southern accent during the broadcast. Operatic trills and other miscellaneous singing by the character was provided by Marjorie Brett and Marjorie Hamilton.
Tumblr media
Lucille Ball signed the contract for “Skylark Song” on June 11, 1948 and was paid $3,500 for her work.
Tumblr media
The story starts when Moore is 17, convincing her father to allow her to attend music school. She goes to New York City where her father tells her to “only take parts in Shakespeare”.  She tells him she will report to theatrical impresario David Belasco to ask him if she can play Juliet.
Tumblr media
GRACE: “Hark! What light through yonder window breaks...”
Belasco stops her. Moore is reciting Romeo’s speech because that is the role she played in school. Lucille Ball purposely does a very stilted rendition, with a large country twang.
Tumblr media
Lucy Ricardo also did Romeo and Juliet in school, later hoping to repeat her triumph with Orson Welles.
Tumblr media
Belasco sends her to see composer and producer George Gershwin, who unfortunately hasn’t got a job for her.
Tumblr media
In 1920, Moore finally lands a job in the chorus of a Broadway show called “Hitchy-Koo.” The show was produced by Raymond Hitchcock (hence the unusual name) with music by Jerome Kern (”Showboat”).
GRACE: “Well, Daddy, what do you think of your skylark, now?”
Tumblr media
Grace lands an audition at the Metropolitan Opera but is told that her Broadway work has damaged her classically-trained voice and sent away.
Tumblr media
GRACE: “I’m either a skylark or a mud hen. There’s nothing in between.”
A fortune teller named Carmen tells her that she should go to Europe and make her name. In a montage sequence, Moore trains in Europe. Now at the peak of her vocal range, Grace finally gets a job at the Metropolitan Opera as Mimi in La Boheme.
Tumblr media
Her proud father and mother attend Grace’s triumphant opening night.
Tumblr media
Announcer Ted Pearson sums up Grace’s remarkable journey, as well as her tragic death in a plane crash in Denmark.
Tumblr media
Pearson reminds us that next week on The Cavalcade of America Basil Rathbone will play Thomas Jefferson in “The Common Glory”...
Tumblr media
...and that Lucille Ball will soon be seen in the Paramount Picture Sorrowful Jones, despite the fact that the film will not premiere until a year later, June 1949. Filming began on April 7, 1948.

ORCHESTON & THE DUKES OF BUCKINGHAM
ORCHESTON & THE DUKES OF BUCKINGHAM
During lockdown, I found myself walking around local villages, some that I had only passed through before. An interesting one was Orcheston, a tiny, sleepy place which has not one, but TWO medieval churches, St George’s and St Mary’s, one set at either end of the village. Both were interesting to visit but what was particularly interesting was what I found out about this little, unassuming…

‘She will not swear the oath and she will give you her reasons, where Thomas More would not. She will say that she is not a bastard but a princess of England and that you are no more head of the church than I am. Then what will you do? Cut off her head?' Audley turns down his mouth 'Brave man.' 'Dead man,' Seymour murmurs. He, Lord Cromwell, rises from his place. He strides across the room, grasps Master Treasurer by his coat, trips him off balance, tumbles him backwards, and bundles him towards the doors. They open smoothly, like the gates of Hell. He seizes the treasurer's chain of office, trying to loop it over Fitz's head. The councilor bellows, the chain twists, Fitz threads his fingers into it. They tussle and Fitz bawls, "Hands off me, Cromwell," swiping at him with his other fist. But he has a grip on the chain, and he hauls Fitz nose to nose spitting into his face, 'Give it over you dolt.' Fitz comprehends. He yields his grip. He yelps, a finger still caught as the chain flies free. A shove in the chest, Fitz staggers backward. The doors slam. He, Lord Cromwell crosses the room and drops the chain on the table before the King. Clank. 'No, that won't do. Getting up a fight for my benefit, when I know you agree with him.'  His fingers reach out for the chain, the gold still warm where it lay against a velvet chest. 'Still, I admire your effort. Fitz is no mean weight.'

The dissolution of the monasteries, occasionally referred to as the suppression of the monasteries, was the set of administrative and legal processes between 1536 and 1541 by which Henry VIII disbanded monasteries, priories, convents, and friaries in England, Wales, and Ireland, expropriated their income, disposed of their assets, and provided for their former personnel and functions. Although the policy was originally envisaged as increasing the regular income of the Crown, much former monastic property was sold off to fund Henry's military campaigns in the 1540s.  He was given the authority to do this in England and Wales by the Act of Supremacy, passed by Parliament in 1534, which made him Supreme Head of the Church in England, thus separating England from papal authority, and by the First Suppression Act (1535) and the Second Suppression Act (1539). While Thomas Cromwell, Vicar-general and Vice-regent of England, is often considered the leader of the Dissolutions, he merely oversaw the project, one he had hoped to use for reform of monasteries, not closure or seizure. The Dissolution project was created by England's Lord Chancellor Thomas Audley, and Court of Augmentations head Richard Rich.
Professor George W. Bernard argues that:
The dissolution of the monasteries in the late 1530s was one of the most revolutionary events in English history. There were nearly 900 religious houses in England, around 260 for monks, 300 for regular canons, 142 nunneries and 183 friaries; some 12,000 people in total, 4,000 monks, 3,000 canons, 3,000 friars and 2,000 nuns. If the adult male population was 500,000, that meant that one adult man in fifty was in religious orders.
