Description

White Chocolate Strawberry Cheerios Cups are easy, no-bake dessert recipe and perfect snack or breakfast to make ahead and grab and go on a busy morning.

Ingredients

2 ½ cups Cheerios cereals

12 oz. white chocolate chips, or white chocolate (finely chopped)

3 Tablespoons coconut oil

1 cup (5–6 oz.) diced strawberries

Instructions

Spray 12 cup silicone muffin pan with cooking spray and set aside. If you don’t have silicone mold use standard cupcake pan, just grease it really well.

First wash and dice strawberries, then set aside.

In a heavy bottom saucepan, over medium-low heat, stirring gently and constantly with a rubber spatula, melt white chocolate and coconut oil until it is smooth and thin.

Next stir in Cheerios cereals.

Finally, gently fold in strawberries.

Divide the mixture into greased silicone molds.

Place in the freezer to set, then remove from the mold and enjoy!

Store leftovers in the fridge for 2-3 days or freeze for longer storage.

Uh, Professor Krugman, I have a question.

I am (generally) a big fan of Paul Krugman. I probably don’t qualify as an out and out Krugmaniac, but most of the time I’m pretty Krugmany, if you know what I mean. I even subscribe to his newsletter, and why not? Because it’s free! (In your face, Milton Friedman!)

But—and clearly there’s a “but” here—I have a bone to pick with Paul over one of his most recent missives—the one headed, most snappily—"Hypocrisy, meet stupidity”, Paul, after slapping around both Donald Trump and Bernie Sanders (a little), goes on about this and that and then offers up a link, to wit:

Canada has much higher social mobility than the U.S. — children born to low-income families have a much better chance of moving up the ladder. As my Stone Center colleague Miles Corak writes, a lot of the difference is explained by Canada’s willingness to spend money helping the poor.

Well, if you follow this link, you’ll get to Dr. Corak’s paper, posted on his site, “Economics for Public Policy”, The “middle class” is within easier reach for low income Canadian children, than it is for low income Americans, and you’ll get this chart:

Dr. Corak explains the chart as follows: “Canadian children raised by parents with incomes at the bottom 10 percent can expect to be earning enough as a young adult to place them much higher, above the 40th rung of a 100 rung income ladder, and significantly higher than their American counterparts. To reach a similar point on the income ladder an American child would have to have parents who ranked as high as the 39th percentile.”

Well, true enough, according to Dr. Corak’s data, whose validity I am not competent to dispute, but I will dispute the integrity of his graphic. You will note that the horizontal legend runs from 0 to 100. The vertical, however, runs from 30 to 70, making the 10 percentile gap between outcomes for American versus Canadian children look more than twice as large, as judged by the eye rather than the brain. In fact, a hurried glance suggests that American children born into the bottom 10th percentile just stay there, while their Canadian brethren sprint 40 rungs ahead.

I believe I was in high school that I stumbled across a little book called How to Lie With Statistics,1 which contains about 75% of the information you can find in Edward Tuft’s pretentious cash cow, The Visual Presentation of Quantitative Information, and which describes Dr. Corak’s little hustle to a tee, although it (possibly) was not intentional. People have a natural tendency to make their findings look as dramatic as possible—“This proves my point!”—but Dr. Corak is a Ph.D., after all, and Ph.D.s are supposed to know about these things. When I worked under contract with the National Center for Education Statistics (with a BA in English, not a Ph.D. in anything) within the U.S. Department of Education (for 19 years), we had a rule that all charts had to show the “bottom” (typically 0 but not necessarily) and the top (often 100 but often not), with broken lines to indicate omitted ranges. These are often overlooked anyway, but at least some measure of care and integrity is maintained.

Well, that’s a lot of shouting about one little graphic, but I’m just getting started (to shout). I was particularly intrigued by Dr. Krugman’s second sentence, “As my Stone Center colleague Miles Corak writes, a lot of the difference is explained by Canada’s willingness to spend money helping the poor.” Maybe Dr. Corak wrote that somewhere, but I couldn’t find it in the post that Dr. Krugman linked to, nor in any of the links that Dr. Coark included in his post. However, if you do some searching, you’ll come across the full paper, “Intergenerational Mobility between and within Canada and the United States”, by Marie Connolly, Miles Corak, and Catherine Haeck, which includes the following remark about why the two countries differ:

The distinct diﬀerence between the countries is the signiﬁcant pockets of very low bottom to top quintile mobility in parts of the southern states [of the U.S., of course]. This is a concentrated area of low upward mobility covering a signiﬁcant proportion of the population that does not have a parallel in Canada, or at least to the extent it does covers a rather small proportion of the Canadian population.

In other words, the distinct difference between the two countries is slavery. Despite all the talk about “colonialism” these days, the treatment of nonwhite peoples by the European conquerors shapes the history of the entire western hemisphere to a degree that is still rarely recognized. Much of the “turbulence” of Latin American history is due to the fact that until the years following World War II, almost all the economic, social, and political power was in the hands of a tiny European or quasi-European elite, differentiated from the mass of the population largely along racial lines. The actual makeup of populations varies significantly from one Latin American country to the next, but racial distinctions are always significant.

Canada, as the Connolly, Corak, and Haeck paper suggests, has the smallest “traditional” nonwhite population (I’m excluding, of course, the recent large immigrations from Asia)—4.3%, according to the most recent Canadian census.2 The U.S. has a Native American population of about 1 percent and a black population of about 15 percent, with a still growing Hispanic population of about 18 percent. Neither of these latter two populations has any parallel in Canada.

People like Dr. Krugman often wonder, wistfully, why there never was a socialist movement in the United States It might be more profitable to wonder why there is no socialist movement anywhere these days, but I can answer the former question: for two reasons, one good and one bad, but both unpalatable to traditional liberals.

The good reason is that life was better in America than in Europe for the poor—the poor European, at least. Uniforms from the American Revolution show that enlisted men (“common men”) were as tall as officers, a phenomenon that did not start appearing in Europe until the 1960s. It’s true that life for the working class in the U.S. was harsh, surely until the 1950s, but in Europe it was much harsher.

The second reason is that life was not better in America than Europe for blacks—it was worse. Slavery was the worst of all, of course, but even after slavery ended racism was endemic throughout American society. The American labor movement was, prior to World War II, almost entirely and explicitly for white workers only. The “No Irish Need Apply”3 signs came down slowly, but the “No Blacks Need Apply” never did. Organized labor could barely take root in the South at all, because the very thought of poor blacks and whites combining drove the ruling class whites into a frenzy, causing a largely informal form of social segregation to be institutionalized during the Populist Era into an explicit one, a process entirely endorsed by poor whites, their racial prejudice proving stronger than their supposed economic interests, to the intense frustration of liberal theorists. In fact, segregation in the workplace was maintained informally in the North almost as efficiently as it was formally in the South, though in the North at least white workers could enjoy the benefits of unionization.4

Much has been done in the area of race relations, but, judging from the 150-odd studies Radley Balko has collected demonstrating the racial bias in America’s criminal justice system, it seems we have a ways to go. As Radley’s many studies suggest, one way we could make it easier for blacks to advance economically is to stop throwing them in jail at the drop of a hat—often done not for racist reasons, but via a general policy of cash-hungry local and state governments to look for ways to squeeze money out of anyone violating a wide host of trivial offenses, both by multiplying offenses and by increasing fines. .

Slides from my presentation. I wanted to represent my visual understanding of Steyerl’s essay In Defence of the Poor Image. The transcript/notes is as follows: I’m going to be presenting Hito Steyerl’s essay, ‘In Defense of the Poor Image’, published on e-flux in 2009. Who is Hito Steyerl? Born in 1966 in Munich, Hito Steyerl is an artist working with research and narrative driven filmmaking, installation works (image 2), and writer of prominent art essay texts/critiques. Steyerl also lectures New Media Art at University of the Arts, Berlin. (image 3) Last year, Steyerl became the first female to take number one position in ArtReview’s Power 100 list. Steyerl is a female artist with major influence who centers her work towards politics of computers and hypermodern technology in society, which brings us to ‘In Defense of the Poor Image’. (image 4) This is a still of television glitches from Shutterstock, representing a poor image at its most basic form. Published in online media, ‘In Defense’ is a commentary on the idolisation and use of images, which has arisen in the 21st century. Its critique is highly relevant as we view our online consumption in new perspectives.Steyerl leads the essay with an extended description of the term ‘poor image’. (image 5) A poor image is “a ghost of an image… distributed for free… compressed, reproduced, ripped, remixed, as well as copied and pasted”. Such as one of Thomas Ruffs jpeg series, where he deliberately is ruining already poor imagery. These images circulate and populate our visual experiences onlines, puncturing the sublime Instagram experience and festering in any Google Image search. Steyerl places them rock-bottom in the “class society of appearances, ranked and valued according to its resolution.” Post its introduction, ‘In Defense of the Poor Image’ breaks into 6 chapters, categorising poor images, their functions, applications, and societal impacts and reasonings for their existence. The first chapter, “Low Resolutions”, offers that images which are in focus, perfectly sharp and legible, are superior to those fuzzy and incomprehensible. Steyerl draws links from the ideal of the cinematic view - (image 6) utter perfection, “more mimetic and magic, more scary and seductive” than an experience of poor images. (This hyperreal Avengers poster is a representation of the cinematic view which dominated over poor images.) The following chapter, “Resurrection (as Poor Images)”, discusses the commercialisation of quality imagery and the subsequent exclusion of poor images. This exclusion applied to images that were “deemed too marginal to be broadcast on television”. In conjunction with experimental films and video essays, which were solely seen in special broadcastings at metropolitan film clubs, these images slipped away after a single screening, buried in a world of lesser than standard work. Steyerl then places reasons for a birth of “culture as a commodity”; the consumption of media was being impacted by monopolies and monetary drive towards the cinema, including control over “audiovisual in certain countries or territories.” (image 7) As a result - excluded imagery and its makers began to find various publicly accessible channels to position themselves on, even where they may not be curated or relevant to their intention. Sarah Jane Parton’s work can be seen on the online NZ archive Circuit - where it would have been otherwise unavailable for public consumption. Restriction of viewing has resulted in ‘leaked footage’, illegal recordings, and ‘rips’ of certain media, placing avant-garde and non-commercial cinema in the public sphere of the Internet - circulating now as poor images. Steyerl moves to “Privatization and Privacy”. She attests that poor images are being enabled to circulate with a larger frequency due to the “neoliberal restructuring of media production” and the demand for free, easily accessible media that is otherwise restricted by certain state laws and online rights. Disorganized privatisation, attributable to regional turmoil, leads to copies of precious materials being leaked, and transitioning through the world now as poor images. (image/video 9) Because “production of culture was considered a task of the state” but has since been vacuumed into a trillion dollar enterprise, poor images encourage piracy and media thievery. It’s too expensive for the average consumer to consider heading to the movies - why not pirate instead, in the comfort of your own home? Chapter #4, “Imperfect Cinema”. Steyerl begins this chapter by referencing a 1960s manifesto by Julio García Espinosa, For an Imperfect Cinema. She paraphrases that an ‘imperfect cinema’ “merges art with life and science, blurring the distinction between consumer and producer, audience and author.” Thus, an image or moving image that offers an alternative to the idealized ‘perfect image’, offers “an art of the people”. In regards to its visuality, it shares likeness with the poor image - often hurried, blurry, made by a dilettante or admirer of the arts. (image 10 neistat) While this opportunity is certainly appreciated and operated within, by being part of the world of poor images it opens itself up to a multitude of negative operations - “hate speech, spam, and other rubbish make their way through digital connections”. Steyerl iterates further by claiming that poor images are therefore the most desired images, on trend, fashionable, and enjoyed. (This is an image from Casey Neistats vlog protesting inhibited bike lanes in NYC) If we are to look at poor images as a whole, they make up a representation of the condition of the population who consumes them - and they certainly are being consumed through editing, remixing, reformatting, and simply spreading them into virality. We move to chapter #5, “Comrade, what is your visual bond today?”. (image/video 111) Unquestionably there is strong visual and cultural bonding in online consumption; the colloquial term for it is a “meme”, a poor image circulated which “reconnects dispersed worldwide audiences.” Steyerl positions meme culture as an opening for cross-cultural debate, utilizing globalisation and the power of the internet. (This video shot to worldwide memedom from 2007 when it was used in place of intended images or videos, pranking the receiver, garnering the term being “Rick-rolled”) Steyerl references “visual bonds”, a term from Soviet film director Dziga Vertov. Vertov imagined that popular imagery could create a type of community which could “not only inform or entertain, but also organize its viewers.” (image 12) We can recognize this statement when applied to multitudes of social media and its events, gatherings and so-called ‘organisations’ for a subculture of visual bonds AKA memes (These are real life events organised on Facebook where people can share interests together) (image 13) In her concluding section, “Now!”, Steyerl finalizes the text with ambiguous comments regarding the life of poor images. Poor images can easily be seen as an everyday encounter in the world of online consumption. They extend beyond our Internet interactions, reaching into personal relationships, resurfacing for that birthday post to your friends. Steyerl positions them as an important creation within a world filled with images, stating that the poor image is “about defiance and appropriation just as it is about conformism and exploitation. In short: it is about reality”. My NotesBeing a technical person and someone that loves to program for fun I've always wondered how it would be for someone to start a SaaS company and never know how to code. I've never thought it would be easy but I certainly never thought it would be as difficult as this. Whilst reading my partners blog post I couldn't help but think how much it related to the struggle of being an entrepreneur and just how challenging things can get and thought you guys would appreciate the read and his Journey and persistence through it all.The storyWe were sitting in the middle of our open 2,500sq ft office with no employees; it was just my co-founder and I. We had big dreams. The hardly-used ping pong table sat behind us, somewhere near the never-used office kitchen. Looking to my right, I could see the sprawling white board wall that was covered in wildly idealistic mockups, surrounded by giant bean bags that were way too big for any one person.“We’re fucked.”I remember saying those words on a daily basis. We had burned through 6 figures of our own initial capital and we had absolutely nothing to show for it, except for a giant box of t-shirts and unnecessary office overhead.There was a precise moment we realized the agency we hired to build our webinar platform prototype was completely screwing us, and it was after we flew the CEO out from Turkey, broke bread, and played tennis. Turns out, there are people out there who will look you in the eye, take your money, lie to you, and do it all with a friendly smile on their face.We had gotten access to a link, which was the first version of a test room of the webinar platform we were building. We joined and, at first, I was confused. “Why are there two Indian developers sitting in a basement on camera right now?” We just sat there and watched while our hearts sank. Up until that point, we had imagined a large team based in Turkey working diligently on our project. Nope. Our prototype was being outsourced to $10/hr freelance developers based in India.It didn’t take us long before we found the right developers on Upwork, the agency profile, and the exact hours and amounts that were paid. The agency we had paid 6 figures to pocketed the money and spent a measly few thousand dollars to build the world’s crappiest prototype, which was more like 1/10th of a prototype.Our journey almost came to a screeching halt before it even started.Fast Forward to TodayNearly 3 years later, I write this article from the comfort of my own home. Our team is spread out across the world, working remotely to continue building a great product for our growing customer base. We don’t have a ping pong table. We don’t have giant bean bags, although I miss them. We don’t even have an office. We’re no longer playing startup; instead, we’re building a sustainable company.Things aren’t perfect; they never are. But we’re happy, and we’re focused. We’re not “killing it,” but our revenue is growing. As it stands, we’re currently hovering around $42,000 MRR. More importantly, we have a great product that our customers love.Our team is spread out from the United States to Jamaica, Ukraine, and other countries in between. The Demio team is made up of 7 full-time members and a part-time contractor. It feels like we always need more hands, but we make it work. As of today, that team is broken down as follows: 2 co-founders (David Abrams, CEO, and me), 3 engineers, 1 Q/A manager/support, 1 marketing director, and a part-time designer.Neither David nor I are technical founders, and yet, we have a very technologically-heavy product based around live streaming. We’re a webinar platform, so, by nature of our product, our team has been mostly developers from the beginning. A lot of the challenges we’ve faced throughout this journey have been technical ones, and it’s definitely been stressful at times.Things seem to be falling into place for us, and we’re truly starting to feel like we’re gaining momentum, which is a powerful thing. We want to keep that momentum rolling, and we want to do so in a sustainable manner.Our Road to Get HereIt hasn’t been easy. Getting screwed by that agency was brutal, but it was really just the beginning. We’ve faced a lot of challenges in getting to this point, and there were times when we were frighteningly close to shutting it all down.We weren’t quite ready to give up after the initial fiasco. We were hurt, though. We lost a lot of our personal funds. But we really believed in the potential of our product, so we continued to self-fund the operation, maybe out of insanity. This time, however, we did it differently. We decided we were going to be in control, and we were absolutely not going to rely on an outside agency. So, we started by hiring a couple developers; we wanted to build a real team this time around.And we did. A couple of our initial hires are still with us to this day, and they are doubtless the reason we are still alive and kicking.I wish I could say it was a breeze once we started building an internal team, but that would be far from the truth. We started by scrapping everything; I don’t think we used a single line of code from the initial “prototype.” We were finally making progress…until we hit our next major wall: real-time streaming. Turns out, being able to support thousands of concurrent streaming connections in a real-time, reliable manner is not an easy task.We went from one potential solution to the next, and nothing was working for us. We were going in circles. We were also going into a competitive market, so there were certain aspects we couldn’t fall short on, such as stability, scalability, and latency. In other words, we wanted to allow business owners to reliably connect with hundreds of people with minimal delay over a broadcast. As time went on and we kept trying to make this happen, more and more it seemed impossible.What’s worse is that we continued to build out the rest of the application and all of the ideas we could fit on our oversized whiteboard wall. Time went on, our application became more robust, but the core streaming feature didn’t even exist. Basically, we built a car without an engine. It seems ridiculous to think, but we were desperate. Because we lost months of time from the agency, we were in a self-induced hurry to get to market, so we were trying to build everything all at once instead of focusing on a simple MVP.The road to Beta was paved with multiple conversations around the idea of shutting everything down and calling it a loss. It’s not that we wanted to end it, we just honestly thought it was over, that we didn’t have a choice. We were always just a few dollars away from running out of money. When we finally did hack together a solution and launch our Beta, it didn’t last. We had to shut it down and, again, set out to completely rebuild our streaming architecture.Months later and, against all odds, we were finally able to launch a successful Beta. By no means were all of our issues solved; we still basically had zero funds, but it was a step in the right direction. And we haven’t looked back since.The Next ChapterThe last 3 years have been somewhat rough; I think nearly everyone on our team has faced some sort of burn out at a certain point along the way. We were in survival mode for a large majority of our company’s existence, and that can be incredibly stressful. But things are different now.We have a great product. We have a great team. We have growing revenue that supports our costs. We’re done playing startup. We’re done setting outrageous goals. We’re not looking to get acquired. We are much more interested in the idea of building a sustainable business; we’re here to stay.Operating in a live webinar environment is extremely challenging, and I truly believe it makes this SaaS journey at least twice as difficult. Our major focus as a team for the years to come is to detach ourselves as much as possible from real-time issues. In order to do this, we’ll continue to place a major emphasis on simplicity of product, which has been our USP from the beginning. So it works out well.Between my co-founder and me, our vision is to create a great company. We want to build a business that is around for decades to come, and we want to accomplish that with people we really enjoy being around. We want to create a great workplace for our employees. We want to have time in our personal lives so we can rest and operate to our maximum potential. Lastly, we want to create a company and product that our customers are proud to support.And we want to share that journey with you.Our first goal for this journey is to bring Demio to $100k MRR. As mentioned earlier, we’re almost halfway there at this point, but that doesn’t mean it’s definite. It’s going to take time and a lot of work, and there will certainly be a number of failures along the way.Here’s Why You Should Stay TunedWe’re not the first company to embrace transparency and share posts about our journey. However, it’s our belief that the ecosystem as a whole is better with more open and transparent companies.
