Yokohama

I love Yokohama (especially Minatomirai area). I was born and raised in this city, but that sense of belonging is not the only reason I love Yokohama.

Yamashita park, Landmark Tower, Chinatown... Each place in Yokohama has a memory. When I visit those places, I recall memories from my childhood. They take me back to the times when I was very happy, satisfied, content, and all other good adjectives.

I also like Yokohama for being very open to LGBTQ+ community. Sometimes LGBT related events are held at Osanbashi hall or Bashamichi. Noge is known to be small gay town. The city officially has a communication room for LGBT youth near Yokohama station, which I have been to when I was in high school: well, I didn’t feel like that place wasn’t for me somehow. But at least I had opportunities to meet real LGBT people other than myself through the city’s events. It was a big experience for me.

And finally, Yokohama city decided to adopt the same-sex partnership certificates (not necessarily same-sex though). I feel proud of my city more than ever. I almost cried when I found this out, imagining my younger self, suffering from the thought that I might not be get married to someone I love. I know it’s a city’s thing and Japanese government does not admit it, but I believe it’ll make a huge difference to young LGBT+ kids’ mental health. Also, this partnership thing spreading all over Japan makes me feel like each city is coming together one by one to change the law to make same-sex marriage in Japan possible. I really hope this city, and this country to be a better place for everyone.
