Morning Routine
Last prompt from OC-lub’s discord.
-
Avalon gently closed the front door, turning the knob so that the sound wouldn’t awaken the rest of the house. Carefully, equally as quiet, she took off her running shoes, laid her headphones around her neck, abruptly stopped the music coming from her Walkman. She went into the kitchen and started the coffee pot with a jab of her thumb. Walking through the kitchen, she went to the sleeping form on the couch, face pressed into the cushions, and pulled the blanket up to their shoulders.
A long night studying, grading papers, wondering if he’d get tenure. David Cranston certainly worked himself harder and harder as the days passed. Working to run away from the darkness and grief that followed him. She knew exactly how that felt, decided to go running simply for the same reasons if she were being honest with herself.
It was easier to push the honest thoughts aside when she distracted herself. From everything. Avalon moved from the living room back to the kitchen. She took the mug fresh from the clean side of the sink and filled the mug with a quick pour. Droplets rolled off the rim and splashed the back of her hand, making her suck in a deep breath then wave the pain away.
She licked the remaining droplets off her hand and made a face. How anyone managed to drink that stuff, she never knew. Turning on her heel, she crossed the kitchen to the door that led to the garage and stepped inside. The cool tiles beneath her feet made her take creeping, long, leaping steps to the work bench that sat at one end of the lab set up inside.
“Rise and shine, Smurf,” Avalon murmured, setting the coffee mug down onto the work bench. With her hand free, she reached out and rubbed Billy’s back, rousing him from a deep slumber. He sat up, rubbing sleep from his eyes, prints from the wood grain pressed in his cheek. “Like father, like son,” she remarked, pressing a kiss to the side of his head. “I reckon you had a long night.”
“If by ‘long’ you mean completely uneventful, then yes,” Billy agreed. “I tried to syncopate the frequencies of our morphers and the morphing grid to ensure that power output that came with our suits and weapons when we have to go back into a fight after sustaining damage and…” he gestured with his hands. “Nothing.” He noticed the coffee and grasped the mug. “I’ll have to work on it again after school.”
“If you even make it.” Avalon gestured toward the clock on the work bench. “You’re running late. Almost don’t have time for breakfast.”
Billy mumbled and gestured with his mug, pulling the goggles from around his neck to rest on the work bench. “This is enough.”
“Coffee isn’t breakfast,” Avalon reminded him.
Billy took a sip, rubbing at his eyes. “I know,” he said, his tone betraying his irritation at hearing the same thing nearly every morning. He slipped into the house with Avalon following him.
She went to her bedroom and went inside. She placed her Walkman on the dresser by the door and climbed into the bed nearest to her. Bailey’s eyes squeezed tight, her legs pulling into her chest. After a second, she made space for her sister, who stretched across the bed, wrapping her arm around her sister.
“Five more minutes,” Bailey murmured.
Avalon smiled into her sister’s face. “Take all the time you need.” Bailey smiled and snuggled deeper into her blankets. It was the only calm moment in their days filled with monsters and attacks on Angel Grove.
They could afford to be late sometimes.

21 for Avalon and Billy?
21. Do they have any shared hobbies/interests?
Yes! They both like to play chess. Billy, as what you’d expect, is the president of the chess club. He studies the game and plays it with his father as much as he can and overall enjoys the game.
Avalon learned the game from her father when she was younger, as a way for him to get her to understand that every action has a consequence and that she needs to learn to think ahead and not be so impulsive. (Like that worked, lol).
When they meet, they quickly find that they both like to play chess and routinely play with each other at lunch and during quiet time at home (usually always playing a game before going to bed). It’s also a way for them to get a chance to really talk to each other when they’re not busy with school work and ranger duties.
Thanks for the question!

Just Like Always - Billy/Avalon one-shot
A/N: Deleted scene from New Beginning.
Summary: Even after ten years apart, there are some things that don’t diminish over time. And you fall back into your old ways, just like always.
Words: 1668

Billy pulled at the neck of his sweater vest, trying to keep it from clamping into his Adam’s Apple any more than it already had. He frowned, looking down at himself. Or maybe it was the dress shirt beneath and not the sweater vest.
Kimberly would’ve said it absolutely was the sweater vest and that no one has worn one in the last twenty years. And yet, she’d immediately turn it around and say that he was the one who could bring it back in style and make it cool again. Honestly, he thought she was lying, but Kimberly was the most fashionable of them all.
Like you really need to think about how you look at a time like this, Billy thought. Scornfully, Billy shook his head. Caring about his appearance at all was ludicrous. There were many more important things in life than what his appearance looked like. He liked himself just fine, didn’t have too many complaints though didn’t quite enjoy the way his eyes squinted when he was concentrating on something…which was caught numerous times in pictures.
Self-conscious anxiety would flow though him when he’d see photos given back to him when he looked like that, it’d been something that’d happened since he was a child. Even when under the darkened haze of the visor of his helmet, he’d find himself squinting, as if it’d make him see clearer—something his contacts aided with.
But that day found himself putting on his glasses rather than sticking in his contacts. He stared at them for a moment then slid them onto his nose. It made him appear more unassuming, he rationalized. That he kept good company. Avalon had made a comment about it before they’d left the house that morning.
“You’d think you were the one who was potentially going to jail, mate. Not me.”
It wasn’t funny, but it had broken the unspoken tension around them. As they sat on the bus, rumbling into downtown Angel Grove—with Zack lamenting he wished they could teleport there—Billy glanced around. Jason, Zack, Kimberly, Trini, and Tommy all sat in the nearby seats, dressed as nicely as he was. Bailey, on the other hand, was getting a ride with Conner and the other rangers. Almost as if they were simply going to a reunion function at Angel Grove High.
Almost immediately, he flashed back to their many times in high school where they’d gone to dances, plays, and other function to support their classmates and enjoy school. How long ago had it been that they’d been able to truly relax? Not very, if Tommy had managed to stumble across his own students who’d become rangers and drag him back into the spandex suit to protect the city.
“Like it’s going to make a difference to what they already think,” Avalon commented when she spotted her friends after they met up at the Youth Center—which still looked the same, though modernized, after many years away from Angel Grove, seeing them all dressed to their best.
“Putting your best foot forward has always yielded good results,” Billy pointed out.
Avalon merely smiled, shaking her head. “You don’t have to come with me,” she said. “It’s just a hearing. I can go by myself.”
“We’re all going to be there for you, Av,” Jason said gently yet firmly.
“Yeah, we’re not going to let you go through this alone,” Kimberly added, squeezing the orange ranger’s hand. “And you know Conner, Kira, Ethan, and Trent are going to be there, too.”
Avalon’s smile pulled at the right corner of her mouth, turning into a smirk. “I meant you lot don’t have to come with me on the bus.” She turned her gaze toward Billy. “I reckoned you’d still be mad about what happened to your truck, yeah?”
Billy did his best to keep his irritation from showing. Of course, the one time Avalon insisted on driving—he was usually the one who took the reins, not quite trusting her to see the road due to her lack of height--resulted in her managing to get his truck stuck in a drainage ditch, bending the axles of his front tires, rendering it useless.
The bus it was.
Sweat dripped down Billy’s back, he shifted back and forth, hoping he’d remembered to bring a can of deodorant in the bag that sat by his feet. Always be prepared. He’d never lasted more than a week in the boy scouts, the bullying over his intelligence was that bad, but it was still something he continued to follow.
His gaze shifted to the side, finding Avalon sitting calmly next to him, looking at something on her cell phone. How she could be so calm, he wasn’t sure, but greatly admired. His gaze flickered to the ‘V’ tattooed on the inside of her wrist, the final initiation that set her into the street gang, The Vipers. The group that eventually led her and the other rangers to her hearing that day, to determine if she’d be charged before testifying at the trial against Chase and the others.
She looked calm, cool, and collected. As if nothing was amiss. The only sign of change was the way she’d decided to dress. Despite being a decade older than her teenage self, on a daily basis Avalon typically continued to dress similarly to the past; her attire, which typically consisting of a leather jacket over any combination of her ranger color, orange, and darker makeup with her long hair loose around her shoulders had been forgone for a lighter spread of makeup spread over her face that made her youthful freckles stand out—and continue to have her carded at R-Rated movies and when buying an alcoholic drink, her hair pulled back into a ponytail with two large strands framing the sides of her face, and a sleeveless orange blouse tucked into a dark skirt.
She kept her head down, looking and smiling at something on her phone. Every few seconds, she’d chuckle to herself before, finally, smiling up at him and angled her phone so that she could show him what she’d been laughing at. But Billy didn’t notice it, didn’t pay attention to the video that’d played, simply stared at her.
The status of their relationship was odd to say the least. Since he’d abruptly left Angel Grove to go to a Peace Conference then to MIT, they hadn’t spoken. For almost ten years they hadn’t said a word to each other. And she was justified in her being angry at him for it, he’d been cowardly and ran away all because he couldn’t handle the feeling of not being a ranger anymore, to know everything he’d worked for was…gone. Because he didn’t feel useful, because he felt that there was nothing more for him in life. So he left, and tore apart something that’d been very important to him all because he couldn’t face how he was truly feeling.
They’d gotten things out in the open, spoke about their feelings and now…Billy wasn’t quite sure what to think of their relationship. He was sure she was still angry at him in some way, many ways. There were many things she still wanted to say to him and he deserved. And yet, she continued to warm up to him as the days passed. He’d missed her while he was gone and it was almost torture to keep himself from talking to her, to keep himself from thinking about her as the days passed. It became easier as the days went on, though it weighed over him.
He wasn’t naïve enough to believe things would be exactly the same way they’d been before, and yet…they’d fallen back into their former relationship quickly. Avalon made fun of him at nearly every turn and he took it, gave it back when needed, and continued to be a calm, supportive force when needed. He was the first she talked to about her upcoming hearing when she became worried.
And now, as he sat next to her, Billy couldn’t help but notice how strong she’d continue to become over their years apart. She didn’t keep things inside and work on them herself, she relied on her friends and family to help her through. (Though her newfound ranger powers probably helped her as well). Nevertheless, Billy couldn’t stop himself from leaning in and placing the ghost of a kiss on her cheek, just below her temple but above her cheekbone.
A reassuring gesture.
Yet, the second his lips left her skin and he got a good look at the surprised expression on her face, he’d realized what he’d done. A flush crept up Billy’s face and he looked away from her, pressing his glasses up his nose. How silly. One gesture to reassure a friend and the next thing he knew, he was back to his teenage self, mentally beating himself up for his impromptu gesture.
He clenched his hands in his lap. So much progress in life; graduated high school early, ran the Power Chamber with the Zeo powers, created the Turbo powers, was a speaker at a Peace Conference, went to MIT, helped create the Lightspeed Rescue powers, and continued to keep in touch with those at NASADA as ranger encounters continued. All that success within his life…and he, a twenty-seven year old man, turned into a teenage boy with no sense of what he’d been doing and the consequences of what he’d done.
Billy clenched his hands even tighter, focusing on the pain that erupted in his hands. He deserved it, he supposed. After all the pain he’d put her through. Billy jumped when he felt Avalon’s hand reach over and curly over his, the steadiness of her contrasting the shaking in his. He glanced at her and Avalon smiled back at him.
Billy relaxed, smiled back at her.
Funny, he was supposed to be supporting her, and she was the one there for him.
Just like always.

Baby Names - Billy/Avalon one-shot
This may end up in a later Bailey-series story, and if it does, it’ll be edited and probably end up a little different than it is here. But I hope you enjoy it.
“Is that coffee?”
Billy sighed and calmly lowered his mug from his lips. Trust his wife would be able to know exactly when he was going to ingest the caffeine. Not just because she was always getting on him about his habit of having coffee for breakfast, but now because of how sensitive she was to the smell.
As he gazed over Avalon’s freckled face--slightly bloated, of which she absolutely hated--he saw a tinge of green rise to her cheeks, her fingers fluttering at her sides. Billy’s eyebrows rose. If that happened from the thought alone, that she was smelling coffee, he didn’t know what’d happen if he actually drank it.
Nevertheless, he managed to hide his amusement at her obviously mounting horror, to calmly say, “I’m drinking tea, Ava. By now I know very well now to bring any sort of coffee around you.” He walked to the couch and sat beside her. She relaxed in relief, shoulders slumping, allowing her to fall further into the couch, resting her hands on her stomach.
Even as they’d grown used to the news they still had to share with their family and friends, Billy was in awe. Logically, he knew exactly what happened and when. He was there and enjoyed every moment of it. But a part of him was still finding it hard to believe.
Avalon was pregnant.
They were going to have a baby. A baby girl. He was never one that cared too much about having a boy to carry on his legacy or any other masculine reason for wanting a boy. He would’ve been happy with either one. Though if he were being honest, a part of him had given up the thought of having any family. Being a ranger in his teens showed him how easily it was for him and his friends to be put in a situation they wouldn’t come back from within moments. Even as he gave up his powers, but continued to be a liaison for future teams, the thought haunted him. Something was going to happen before she could give.
The worries haunted him for days on end, kept him awake at all hours of the night. (It wasn’t too bad, he supposed. He’d gotten used to staying up at all hours of the night for his own work. Staying up to put a crib together was the least of his problems). It kept him going and simultaneously kept him in a perpetual state of worry.
So much so that nearly every day Avalon had to say, “Smurf, relax.” He’d be sitting at the table reading the morning newspaper and she’d walk by, rubbing her fingers along his neck and would say it. It wasn’t until she spoke that he’d realized his shoulders were tense and he’d force himself to relax.
As it was, Avalon was now studying him closely as he calmly sat next to her, grabbing the book that sat by her side. “I swear,  Smurf, your head is going to bloody explode if you don’t calm down, yeah?”
Billy took another sip of tea. “I’m fine.”
“And that mug isn’t going to crack in your fingers,” she said sarcastically. Holding out her hand, Avalon beckoned for the cup of tea and handed him the book instead. “It’s your turn to choose one, mate.”
“Alright.” Instead of handing her the cup of tea, he balanced it on her protruding stomach, the same thing he did every day, working to find the best place for it every day. He noticed her glare and grinned back at her, flipping to the page they’d left off on. “What about...” his eyes trailed over the page. “Evangeline?”
“Can you imagine yourself yelling ‘Evangeline Cranston’ all the fucking time?” Avalon asked.
“No,” Billy replied smoothly. “Then again, I don’t plan on yelling at her at all.”
A snort escaped Avalon’s lips. She carefully watched the teacup rise and fall as she breathed. “You’re in for a surprise.”
“Your dad never yelled at you.”
“And look how I fucking turned out.”
Billy smiled. He scanned the page until another name jumped out at him. “Carley?”
Avalon tilted her head, eyes shifting as she thought. “Carley Cranston,” she mused out loud. “Hmm. That’s closer.” Billy let out a quiet hum and Avalon shook her head. “You were the one who told me finding a name is important.”
“It is,” Billy agreed. And he firmly believed in it. Choosing a name for a baby was a lot more than just a name.  It was the name the person was going to live with for the rest of their lives. And considering how many times he’d been teased for his own name--William Randall Wadsworth Cranston--he didn’t want that for any of his children.
Maybe he was being a bit sensitive to it, but he especially didn’t want it for his daughter.
“I just didn’t think you’d be so picky about it,” Billy said honestly.
He gazed over at Avalon to find her absentmindedly rubbing her hand over her stomach. He saw a tremor, knowing she’d just received a kick. Their baby was starting to move a lot more lately. It was only so much time until they were in the clear and could tell the others. Kimberly would want to start planning a baby shower as soon as possible.
Avalon had certainly softened over the years, especially since becoming pregnant. Yes, she was stubborn about the exercise she was still allowed to do--fighting Billy tooth and nail over being able to still surf. Otherwise, she listened to everything the doctors said; changed her diet, worked to stay calm in some of the more stressful situations, read every parenting book she could get her hand on, and made sure Billy was as up to speed about everything as well, when he wasn’t tiring himself out with work.
It amazed him, how much Avalon still worked to take care of him, even when she was the one who was pregnant. Many times he found himself covered by a blanket and with a cup of tea or some other beverage sitting beside him. Not to mention her bringing him food when he was working late, made sure he had lunch every day, and didn’t complain when putting together and acquiring some other baby necessities. (When she wasn’t reaming him for laughing at her recent struggles to get off the couch).
Nevertheless, she was still the young woman he’d met years ago who could quickly turn a sarcastic remark his way within a blink of an eye. No matter how much time had passed, that roughness had never completely left her.
“I want her to have a good name,” Avalon murmured. “I’ve thought about this for a long time.”
“About what?”
“Having children.” She explained when Billy’s eyebrows furrowed. “I’ve thought about being married since I was a anklebiter. My wedding days, kids...I want it all to be perfect.” She sighed. “I want her to be okay, yeah?”
“‘She’s going to be fine,” Billy reassured her. He knew her fears, had them, too. That one day they’d wake up and she’d be gone. It already happened once, they couldn’t go through that pain again. “Just a few more weeks.”
“I don’t think I can wait that long, Billy,” Avalon whispered, her words betraying her apprehension. She locked her gaze on his. “I really don’t.”
Billy leaned over and pressed a gentle kiss to her kiss, then kissed the side of her head. “Everything will be fine, I promise.”
“Why?” She gave him a sly smile. “Are you creating some sort of a pre-natal serum to ensure she’s a super baby?”
Billy laughed at her joke. “If I could do that, we’d be billionaires. Though, I can do without the notoriety.” It was hard enough that since they revealed their identities, their past ranger identities, the general public consistently wanted to interview them. Wanted the first photos of their new baby, wanted to know everything they could about them. Avalon was pleased of Billy’s continual rise in the science world, but the constant insight into their privacy was starting to get to them.
And Billy didn’t want another moment of Avalon screaming at newspaper reporters to ‘fuck off, the lot of you’ when they got too close again. Though, secretly, he was proud of her for it.
“You and me both,” Avalon agreed. She changed the subject. “What about Cassie?”
Billy was silent for a long moment, running the name through his head. Over and over. Another thought struck him then. One he hadn’t wanted to suggest in the first place. It still brought up a lot of painful memories. He hadn’t wanted to admit it, how his mother’s passing still affected him. How it hurt even more to know she would never meet her first grandchild. He knew she would’ve loved her granddaughter.
“What about Casey?” He asked, voice barely above a whisper.
He knew she’d understand the meaning of it. It’d been his own mother’s middle name. Lacey Casey. A funny little saying that made her parents smile whenever her name was called.
He felt Avalon shift behind him. She didn’t respond other than to take his hand in hers and kiss the back of it before squeezing it tightly.
Amber Casey Cranston it was.

Billy and Avalon working on Zords and Weapons
“What are you up to today?”
“I’m running diagnostics on the Zords and determined by the results of those tests I will then facilitate the capacities the hydraulics will be able to handle while under certain pressures of battle,” Billy explained before clarifying with, “Tests, tests, and more tests.”
“Fancy an assistant?” Avalon asked.
“I’d love one.”

Tech Support  (BillyxAvalon)
Billy is, once again, working on upgrading the rangers’ zords and weapons and this time Avalon is a willing participant to help. (aka, the time Billy finally found out he had feelings for Avalon, before Kimberly dragged it out of him).
Inspired by this post (x)
-
“What are you up to today?”
Billy wasn’t sure what to expect, really. He wasn’t one that many people would call anal-retentive. If he were being gratuitous he’d say he could be as laid-back as Zack at the best of times. At the worst the blue ranger could get a little persnickety. But who liked having fingerprints mar computer and video screens? Who liked having to take the time to clean up a mess that wasn’t a mess beforehand? Who liked to have their work messed up when he had a structure order to everything it.
Not to mention what everyone lovingly dubbed his techno-speak. It was a part of him and always had been. But he saw the way everyone looked at him as he continued to speak—or ramble as his parents also lovingly pointed out. Saw the looks when he finished. The half-second pause as they tried to work through what he had said before inevitably asking him to repeat himself.
‘English please’.
He thought he was speaking English. It wasn’t his fault he preferred to use the big vocabulary he had learned through his numerous studies and pieces of literature that lined the walls of his house and the library when he had the free time.
It was probably the only thing in life that actually ticked him off.
So much so that as much as he tried to keep a straight face, Trini, so far, had been the only one he could handle for a length of time. Kimberly, as much as he loved her energy, was a little too energetic for the Command Center. Jason was a little too peaceful about things going on. Zack didn’t take it as seriously as he could and Tommy…Tommy tried. His forgetfulness didn’t help.
When Bailey joined him in the Command Center it was a match made in heaven, she enjoyed the sciences and alien technology that they came across with their zords and weapons. But she was a young girl with her own set of friends and coming into her own in the world. But she wasn’t always available for some help.
Having Avalon helping him wasn’t too foreign. He’d subject her to many moments of being his guinea pig for DNA recon due to their proximity. She initially whined and complained about it but dutifully handed over saliva, strands of hair, or nail clippings when asked. Soon afterwards, she could have the samples prepared for him before he knew he needed to ask for them.
He watched as pleasant surprise shot across her face, making her stormy, dark brown eyes brighten. Much like a skyline after a rainfall. The clouds broke away and sunlight came through. The smile that came to her face was one she didn’t show often enough. Then it was clouded over once more and she suddenly scowled at him. Billy blinked in surprise, eyebrows coming together.
Logically, he knew there was nothing he’d done in the last couple of seconds that could have made her irritated at him. She did have random bouts of mood swings and knew it was from her trust issues. If he knew her as well as he thought he did—which was very likely—she wasn’t sure why he agreed o have her in the Command Center alongside him.
“What” Billy asked the question with a little laugh to his tone. He couldn’t help it. The scowl on her face and her smaller stature made her look like a little kid that was having a tantrum. Not the powerful force to be reckoned with in and out of battle.
“What?” Avalon parroted.
“Why are you…glaring like that?” He asked. He lowered his coffee mug from his lips and moved to the sink to rinse it out. With a few quick movements he had it rinsed, washed, and dried, sitting neatly in drying rack. Everything back where it needed to be. Then he turned back to Avalon, patiently waiting for her explanation.
Once again, he found himself unable to stop watching her. He could see the storm of emotions brewing through her eyes. Her shoulders slumped and she started to tug at the sleeves of the orange flannel shirt tied around her waist. Finally, she lifted her head, slapped her hand against her thigh.
Her eyes met his.
“Usually you prefer to do these things yourself,” she said.
Ah.
It was true; he could be a bit of a lone-wolf at times. It was never intentional. Sometimes he got so into what he was doing that everything tended to fall by the wayside. Or maybe it was that he didn’t quite feel comfortable around them. He was the odd man out in terms of athletic amongst his friends. He wasn’t a wimp by any means, being taught martial arts and gymnastics from his friends but it was never his forte.
“Why would you want me to help?”
“Because I enjoy your company,” he said honestly.
“Oh.”
And that was all that needed to be said by way of explanation. It was the truth. HE enjoyed her company. It was a bit of a bragging point for him. He was the first one of their group she had really opened up to. By his count she was the only one that she wasn’t too hostile with when they first met. Not that he was keeping score. It was a simple observation. Just like he was the first one that she’d given a nickname to. It had annoyed him at first, who wanted to be known as a short, blue, elfish creature.
Then he’d heard the ones she’d given the rest of the rangers and was grateful for small favors. It had grown on him pretty quickly once he realized the intent behind it. He’d studied Australian culture shortly after meeting her, knowing it was something that many of them did over there. Give nicknames to those they considered friends. He was flattered and pleasantly surprised to know she considered him one, first. Truth be told he didn’t always know how to act around her rather than being straightforward.
It was a wonder that he had found himself growing close to her, understanding her so well. She was a lone-wolf in her own way and protected her pack—her little sister and their friends—as fiercely as an alpha wolf would.
He believed the word for it was kismet.
-
Billy pulled a headset over his ears. “Alpha, please run a diagnostic on the Tyrannosaur zord while I go into the cockpit to asses the damage there.”
“Right away, Billy,” Alpha agreed, toddling off to do what he was told.
“What do you want me to do?” Avalon asked.
She stood a few feet away from him, glancing around the Command Center’s zord hangar. Every time the zords were dismissed after battle they went back to their hiding spots. However, when it was time for them to have maintenance work done they were summoned to the hangar.
Thankfully, it didn’t look like there was too much damage that needed to be fixed. But looks could be deceiving. He had an innate understanding of the inner workings of the zords to know when something as small as a chipped piece of a control panel could mean structural damage inside.
“I want you to wait with Alpha to see what diagnostics says,” Billy explained. He adjusted the microphone lead so that it rested by his mouth. “And relay the information to me.”
Avalon lifted a flat hand to her forehead and saluted him. “Aye, aye, Smurf.”
A smirk raised to Billy’s lips. He turned and grabbed onto the rungs of the ladder directly to his right and quickly climbed up. He walked along the catwalk, gently sliding his fingers over the metallic finish of the Pterodactyl, Saber-Tooth Tiger, and Triceratops zords before coming to a stop at the Tyrannosaurus zord. Then he carefully lowered himself down the hatch at the top of the zord and wedged his way into the cockpit.
It smelled faintly like mechanics, sweat, and cologne. Their consistent and often sporadic calls to action had caused for everyone’s increase in their personal hygiene. It seemed that Jason had taken Zack’s advice of the cologne to ‘attract the babes’ as he put it. If only those babes knew Jason was a ranger, it’d probably cut out the middle man and keep Billy from choking to death every time he went to do basic maintenance.
A wry smile came to Billy’s face and he turned his attention back to the computers inside the zord. Everything looked to be okay from the first glance. No chips to the control panel, no buttons jammed into its housing in desperation of needed power. No joysticks knocked loose form their tracks. But that was only on the outside. With the hardware inside composing of wires and fragile pieces of machinery, anything could’ve happened.
Goldar was nothing short of ruthless when fighting against the Megazord. Almost as if the mere sight caused him great displeasure.
Billy’s wry smile widened at the thought of the golden monster instead deciding to use his words when fighting against the rangers. If only they could be that lucky. A simple conversation to send all the monsters away. It’d sure make their jobs a hell of a lot easier. Taking a screwdriver from his belt, Billy pried open a metallic panel that lead to the wires inside.
Leaning over it, he frowned. There didn’t seem to be anything wrong. But none of the zords ever came out of a fight with little structural damage. Now that he thought about it, it was typically Avalon’s Orange Stegosaurus zord that was the one most damaged. She did have a very offensive offense tactic in her fights. Or else it was easier for her to unleash her aggression on the monsters rather than the other rangers as she’d done before.
A familiar crackling sound filled his ears and Billy lifted his head to press into the ear-piece. “What’s the verdict, Alpha?”
“There’s smoke coming out of the bottom of the zord, is that good?” Avalon’s voice replied over the radio. In the background, he could hear Alpha’s frantic ‘ay yi yi yi yi’s’. For a moment, Billy was floored by the completely casual tone to Avalon’s voice.
Smoke in a zord was never a good thing.
Billy pressed his finger firmly against the ear-piece so he could respond, “No, Av, that’s not good.”
“Next question; is it normal?”
She was going to give him a heart attack. He knew that for sure. She was going to make him drop dead from stress alone. Billy quickly climbed out of the cockpit of the zord. His feet practically grew wings with the speed he got himself back down to the ground where Avalon stood calmly next to Alpha, who flapped his hands towards the last vapors of smoke that dissipated in seconds.
“As soon as he finished running the diagnostic, something started happening with the tail, mate,” Avalon explained. She poked her cheek with the end of the antenna sticking out of the radio. She looked it over for a moment. “Looks to me like the circuits have been fried. I reckon it could use some new rotors, too.”
“If you knew what’s wrong with it, why did you ask me?” Billy asked.
Avalon’s eyes flashed. She pointed the end of the antenna towards him. “To see that look on your face, Smurf.” He rolled his eyes. “Honestly? Because you’re not going to be able to fix that yourself.”
Billy pressed a hand to his chin. He took the scanner that Alpha handed to him and waved it over the tail section of the zord. It beeped towards the inside, where the tail connected with the body of the zord. “You’re right,” he agreed. “The mechanics at this point of connection are routinely difficult to handle on one’s own.”
“Well, that’s what I’m here for.”
“We’ll need a screwdriver, a wire cutter, a socket wrench, and a flash light.”
It took only a few seconds for the items to be acquired before Billy put himself on his back and wiggled his way underneath the Zord. He pressed the flashlight into his mouth, using his teeth to hold it steady while he looked over the parts. Avalon scuttled up next to him, carefully holding onto the other pieces of equipment.
Reaching up a hand, Billy pulled the flashlight form his mouth and waved it over the section that had been smoking. The parts were covered in soot, an acrid scent hanging around them. It was all he could do to not choke on it. No matter how used to the different smells from the zords, the first wave always shocked him.
“See this?”
“Uh-huh.”
“There’s structural damage to the zord that I hadn’t previous observed. I can’t recall it taking in any hits from the last couple of fights. So, it must be standard wear and tear over the countless uses of the zord. These sockets here are starting to become loose, making the wires neighboring them to fray and become structurally unsound. Then these soldered points have commenced to corrode and melt against each other. They need to be detached and re-worked independently.”
“So, where are we looking at to start?”
Billy heard a rustling sound then felt her breath on his cheek. His eyebrows came together when he noticed it. It was a little distracting. His heart rate immediately increased and he felt his hands start to shake. Something strange squirmed in his stomach. How peculiar.
Billy turned his head to answer her and was gob smacked by how close she was to him. He could see every individual freckle that dusted her cheeks and nose, see the freckle that sat right above the right side of her upper lip, position perfectly vertical to the one above her eyebrow. Could clearly see the scar that ran from the bottom of the right side of her jaw that stretched up to the apple of her cheek. Could see her long, dark eyelashes stand out against her paler skin.
He’d always thought she had a striking face, her eyes incredibly intense. But up close…
“Billy?” Avalon asked.
Billy turned his attention away. He had no idea what came over him. Yes, he felt she was attractive, but it was just a factual statement. Just as he thought the same about Marge, Melissa, Trini, Kimberly, and other girls at Angel Grove High. It was scientific, they were all aesthetically pleasing.
Keep telling yourself that, the voice inside his head teased.
Now Billy frowned. Where had that come from.
“Yes, uh, it would be best if we started by taking apart the soldered points so that the tail can be detached.” He swallowed hard, lifting his flashlight once more. The beam of light wobbled back and forth. “That way we’ll be able to wholly ascertain how profound the structural impairment is.”
“Gotcha.” Avalon carefully placed the screwdriver on the ground beside her and picked up the socket wrench. She squinted, searching for the easiest point of entry then placed the wrench against it, moving her wrist back and forth to start loosening the bolts.
She worked deftly. Ping. Ping. Ping. Bolts dropped down into her hand by the second.
Something struck Billy then. “How did you know what was wrong with the rotors?” He asked.
A chuckle escaped Avalon’s lips. “I guess that’s the one bright side to having dated Chase for a while, yeah?” She pointed out. “He knows more about cars than anybody. I reckon, alien technology aside, it’d work out the same way.” She shook her head. “Honestly, I’m surprised he had more to say than what hit we were going to do next. It became his life.”
“Gang life can be pretty difficult to get out of,” Billy said. He didn’t have to explain it to her. She knew firsthand. He often wondered if she continued to run with them out of fear or because if it was the same reason he, statistically, knew to be true. It was harder to get out than to stay in.
“Not if you don’t want to get out,” Avalon pointed out. “And Chase definitely doesn’t. It’s the only life he knows, he likes the power.” A slow smile started to work its way to her face. “Imagine if he ended up being a power ranger.”
Billy thought about it and smiled as well. What a preposterous idea. Being a ranger was for those who were true at heart. It as how the power chose you. Still, seeing the vicious teen as a ranger was a humorous idea equally.
“What color do you think he’d have?” He asked.
“Knowing him?” She paused for exactly one second. “The girliest color you could imagine.”
“Pink?”
“Maybe even yellow, mate. Can you imagine the bloke in yellow?” She started to giggle. “What would his dinosaur be?”
“Well, considering we have the Mastodon and the Saber-Toothed Tiger, it doesn’t necessarily have to be a dinosaur,” Billy pointed out.
He thought about it for a moment. It came to him almost immediately.
“A chicken.”
He said it so dead-pan, so frank, so flat that Avalon burst out into hysterical laughter.
Billy found himself laughing along with her in seconds. He continued to laugh, trying to hold the flashlight steady but found that he couldn’t do it. He hadn’t laughed that hard since the last time Bulk and Skull managed to get cake all over them at a ill-fated martial arts attempt at the Youth Center.
He had fun with his friends, always had fun with them, but completely letting go and not being so shy was…hard. Finally, Avalon popped off all the other bolts and collected them in her hand before shimmying her way out from underneath the zord. Billy followed her then sat up, running a hand through his hair. He got to his feet and walked over to the end of the tail and gave a short tug, eyes widening at the weight of the machinery.
He expected it to be heavy, but the thought came back of how heavy it would’ve been if he didn’t have the added physiology from their ranger power. Billy carefully dropped the tail to the ground then stepped around it to look inside. Just as he thought. Some of the inner machinery wasn’t looking too good and Avalon was right when she said the rotors were an issue.
“Told you, mate,” Avalon said. She reached in and in a matter of seconds managed to remove the rotors from inside the machine piece and hefted them into her arms. “I’ll get started on these and then you can work on the other stuff.”
She walked over to a work bench and set the pieces of machinery down. Then she picked up a pair of glasses that sat on the bench and held them up to her face. Then turned to face him. “These yours, mate?”
Billy looked up at her. “Yes, they’re mine.”
“You’ve got terrible style in frames.” She slid them onto her eyes and scrunched her nose for added effect. “Hate to break it to you, Smurf, but It makes you look like a nerd.”
“They’re prescription.”
“Even worse. You’re fucking blind, too.”
Billy laughed to himself. At least she’s honest.
With a teasing smile, Avalon carefully set his glasses aside and picked up another set of safety glasses, immediately sliding them onto her face. He could practically see the manic glee in her eyes as she picked up the blow torch to use it.
Billy placed his hands on his hips, eyelashes fluttering as he watched. Avalon pulled her flannel shirt up over her arms, slid her hands into a pair of gloves, and arranged her hair behind her shoulders. She adjusted the safety glasses that already rested on her face and picked up the blow torch, holding it against the spinning metal in front of her. Sparks flew but she continued to focus on the part in front of her, turning the blowtorch this way and that every few seconds.
And still Billy watched. Watched as the sparks illuminated her face, making her freckles stand out against her skin, making her dark eyes reflect the bright light. The way the corner of her lips turned up in concentration. Then she lowered the blow torch and lifted the safety goggles up her forehead, making her hair fringe stick straight up so that he could see her entire face.
Could see the smile of pride at her own work.
It was then he knew.
Then he finally, completely understood what was making him act so weird all day.
He was in love with her.

Blush - Billy/Avalon
It started with a blush.
Billy had just finished a test with enough confidence that he hadn’t needed to look over his answers. He stood up, the screeching of his chair drawing the ire of his classmates around him. Skull let out a long snore, draped over his desk, while Bulk crumpled his own test and threw it at Billy’s head. It bounced off and dropped harmlessly to the floor. Billy ignored it, used to the taunts.
It took him a long time to get used to the envy and outright jealousy of his classmates to his smarts. The misunderstanding that made him so alone. They thought he thought he was better than them. When all he truly wanted was to fit in. But fitting in wasn’t something Billy was made to do, he was made to stand out and if that was his smarts that did so, then so be it. He’d never downplay his smarts just for a shot at the ‘cool crowd’. Besides, some of the coolest people in school; Tommy, Jason, Kimberly, Trini, and Zack were some of his best friends.
Billy smiled at Ms. Appleby as he dropped off his test at her desk. She lifted her gaze from her book, smiled at him, scolded Bulk and Skull, then bid him an enjoyable rest of the day, a sentiment Billy gave back to her. Then he hitched his bag up his shoulder and moved to leave the room, risking a glance at his friends. They’d all studied together the night before; one last cram session that’d at least increase their confidence. If they didn’t know the material then, they’d never know it, he surmised. But confidence went a long way.
It was a stark change, honestly. Kimberly, who typically chewed on the erasers of her pencils with her front teeth had her head bent over the desk, scribbling away. Zack, who could never sit still, wiggling around to a beat only he could her was stock still, poised over his test, carefully reading the answers. Jason wasn’t looking around the room, Tommy wasn’t twirling his ponytail around his finger, and Avalon wasn’t staring into space, finding it all a waste of time.
Trini got up from her seat, always the second one to finish, and passed by her friends, flashing them encouraging smiles as she walked by, them looking up at her movement. Avalon smiled back at her then turned her gaze to the front, looking at Billy.
She looked at him then just as quickly looked away. Eyes downcast, her lips tilted into a smile which was, not simply rare for her, but something she didn’t quite do when taking tests. She was intelligent, that was for sure, being able to survive on the streets with only her sister as company was no easy feat. Nevertheless, she still smiled at him. Her smile made her usually tough face brighten in exuberance, showing off her true age of seventeen, youthful beauty radiating from inside.
Suddenly, Billy felt more uncomfortable than he’d ever had before. He’d had experience talking to other girls, had a girlfriend in Marge and Melissa where he didn’t know what to do. Despite the encouragement from Zack, Trini, and Kimberly, he couldn’t bring himself to do much about his interest in them. Somehow, by the grace of God, they’d been interested enough in him to break him from his shell. He couldn’t even gather the courage to ask Marge to the dance that night, he remembered. His own nerves got in the way and she ended up asking him.
This was different. Billy suddenly felt hot under the collar, blinked rapidly, shuffled from foot to foot. He hadn’t done that in a while, a habit he’d left behind since working on his self-confidence and self-worth. The heat crept form his neck to his cheeks, up to his ears. Who knew it was possible to get so worked up. It must’ve been what Jason, Tommy, and Zack meant when the guys were alone and discussed everything from girls to what they did with girls. Not that Billy didn’t understand their conversations, but it was one thing to understand it in terms of scientific specifics than to exhibit it in person.
Ducking his head, Billy left the classroom with Trini hot on his heels. They walked to their lockers, conversing about the test answers they got right and wrong while waiting for their friends to finish. Billy sat in front of his locker, pulling out the notes he’d written down the night before of a new weapon he wanted to create for the rangers. A signal inhibitor lest they were to be brain washed or hypnotized once more.
One by one their friends trickled out of the classroom with different exclamations about the test. Tommy’s bringing a round of laughter when he said, “I was so nervous I almost forgot to write my name.”
“That’s no surprise,” Zack interrupted. “Sometimes I wonder if you recognize your own reflection in a mirror.”
“Well, I’m sure you can easily recognize yours, because your head’s so big,” Trini said, swatting at his arm. She looked up when Avalon finally joined the group, tossing her backpack aside. She settled to the floor next to Billy, her arm brushing his. “How’d it go?”
Again, there was a shot of heat that crept through his neck. It was official, something was wrong with him.
“Pretty good, I reckon,” Avalon said. She ran a hand through her hair and sighed. “There were a few I missed but I at least answered everything this time.” She poked Billy on the arm with her index finger. “And it’s all thanks to you, Smurf. I couldn’t have done it without you, mate. Thank you.”
Billy lifted his fingers from his arm in a gentle motion. “Don’t mention it. I’m glad to have helped all of you.” He made sure to look at all his friends when he spoke, not wanting to blush again. It was starting to get on his nerves. It didn’t work, for Avalon made a face and leaned towards him.
“You alright, mate? You’re looking kind of red.”
“I’m fine,” Billy replied. He looked at his watch. “Actually, I’m going to be late for the science club if I don’t get going.” He didn’t have a meeting for the science club in another twenty minutes. But something was happening to him and he needed to figure out what it was. “I’ll see you all later.”
He scrambled from the floor, practically tripping over his bag, before he managed to stay steady on his feet, walking away. As he went, Billy clenched his hands into fists.
He’d gotten over his nerdy self, over the anxiety, the nervous swaying, the rapid blinking, the insecurity. Only to find himself unable to stay normal when the orange ranger was around him. Intuitively, he knew exactly what was going on.
It was times like these he wouldn’t mind a monster being dropped from the sky and crushing everything in sight. Somehow, working as a ranger was becoming easier than being a regular teen.
Billy risked a glance over his shoulder and found—as usual---Avalon’s gaze move his way. She smiled and gave him a parting wave. Billy felt himself smiling back until she turned to address something Kimberly was saying to her. Billy sighed, moving to face forward once more.
A lot easier.

How many times do you think the Cranstons saw Avalon coming out of Billy room before hey stopped thinking/wondering about what they could’ve been doing when she and Bailey lived with them?

This BillyxAv fic idea I just got...
They were living together for a LONG while, even before getting together because Mr. and Mrs. Cranston allowed Avalon and Bailey to stay with them in the guest room that eventually turned to be their room. Who's to say they were even 'allowed' to date.  Or what Mr. and Mrs. Cranston thought of their budding relationship. AND all of that close proximity had to mean they grew close fast...

Conversation
Av: I'm just saying...it's a good thing I met you now rather than when I first moved to Angel Grove.
Billy: Why?
Av: Because you wouldn't have stood a chance.

I know BillyAv is the ship, but I was always curious about other ones? Like what were things that KimAv or even Jason/Av would do together? Did you have songs or things associated with them?
Boy, do I have answers for you.
KimxAv
I’ve actually written out KimxAv ideas before as well as a cute little one-shot. In short, Kim and Av have a big opposites attract sort of relationship. On the surface it looks like they don’t have much in common at all, but there’s a lot that they bond over, specifically Av’s guilt over stealing Kim’s pearl necklace to sell (which Kim forgives her for) and they both have shitty fathers.
Being the shortest/most similar in size of the rangers they share clothes often. (Pink is actually Av’s favorite color, but orange looks better on her).
Kim drags Av to ‘chick flicks’ because she knows Av secretly likes them. The same for Av taking Kim to action movies.
Kim knows her endless positivity gets on Av’s nerves so she acts extra bright around her on purpose.
Av enjoys pushing Kim’s buttons (by teasing her) until she blows up, she likes to watch Kim get angry and laugh about it.
Go out for ice cream together after school every Friday
Kim teaches Av gymnastics while Av teaches Kim parkour
Kim is Av’s optimist while Av is Kim’s realist
They both love to go horseback riding
Always holding hands or linking arms
Linking pinkies
Always does each other’s hair
Association: Sunsets
Song: Breathless by The Corrs
JasonxAv
JasonxAv starts off a bit oddly. Avalon, at first, likes him and kisses him first when she’s in a state of heightened emotion, of which Jason doesn’t reciprocate. She easily deflects it saying that she was just ‘caught up in a moment’. But Jason does like her too, however with the gang stuff going on he tends to babysit her in a way and is overprotective of her. Then dates Emily, then gets together with Av when things with Emily don’t work out. Jason calms Av down and he’s one of the few people she allows herself to open up to in terms of her art and singing. (To this extent it’s why I went back and fort between JasonxAv and  BillyxAv before ultimately deciding on BillyxAv)
Avalon goes to all of Jasons’s football games and practices
Jason easily opens up to his struggles of being a leader and role model to Av
They both struggle and help each other get through her gang past as he was targeted to be jumped by them
Jason makes sure to kiss each of the scars that was left on her by Chase
Avalon tends to be pretty shy and embarrassed when expressing her feelings to Jason (though her annoyance with him is easy to express)
They call each other on the phone every night
Jason loves to play with Av’s hair
They like to go hiking together
Av steals Jasons’s sweatshirts all the time
Has sparring dates as Jason wants to improve his fighting and Av is just super competitive
Av constantly gives Jason cheek kisses to make him blush
Association: Sunrises
Song: Two Is Better Than One by Boys Like Girls
Hmm, there might be a parallel with those. Lol. Hope that helps!
