The Easy Way I Shine My Sink Using the FlyLady Method Regular news updates from Adtwixt When you start with the FlyLady system, one of the first things she has you do is shine your sink. This is an important “baby step” that helps you get off to a great start with your new home management routine. Shine Your Sink? If you’re new to FlyLady, you may be wondering why on earth it’s so important to have a shiny sink. I used to wonder this too! But now that I’ve gotten into the habit of having a relatively clean sink, I see the benefits of shining your sink: It creates order in one of the most chaotic places in the house. It’s like a little oasis amidst all of the crazy. It helps your kitchen function better. If the sink is filled with dirty dishes, you pretty much can’t do anything. You can’t cook, you can’t wash your hands, you don’t have clean dishes to eat off of, and you can’t get yourself a simple glass of tap water. It’s contagious. Once you build the habit of shining your sink, that will carry over into getting other things cleaned, decluttered, and organized. It’s kind of amazing! Perfection Gets in the Way of a Shiny Sink In FlyLady’s book and on her website, she gives very specific directions for how to shine a sink. The first time I did my sink, I followed her directions exactly. But sometimes, people have doubts about the specific instructions. Maybe they have a delicate sink they don’t want to destroy. Maybe they don’t want to use bleach. Or maybe they just don’t want to go out and buy new cleaning supplies. Whatever the case may be, don’t let wanting to shine your sink perfectly get in your way. There are actually a lot of ways you can clean a sink (amazing, huh?). Below you can find videos that demonstrate shining your sink. One is from the FlyLady herself, one is from Diane in Denmark (a wonderful FlyLady mentor), and then I show how I shine my sink using stuff I just happen to have around the house. If you don’t want to use bleach, this is a great way to go about it: How I Shine My Sink I don’t care so much about specific products, so I tend to just use what I have on hand. Here’s what I do: Unload dishwasher (I need a place to put the dirty dishes). Put dirty dishes in dishwasher. Scrub sink with dish soap and a sponge or rag. Get all of the gross stuck on food off the sink. Rinse sink well. Fill both sides of my sink with hot water and a little bit of vinegar. Let it sit for about an hour. (I set a timer on my phone so I don’t forget!) Pour a glass of iced tea or coffee and go do something fun. Read a book, play with the kids, take a nap – whatever you like! Drain the water from the sinks. Use tongs to remove the drain stoppers if the water is still too hot. Sprinkle your sink with a cleanser that’s safe for your sink. I use baking soda because it’s cheap! I keep it in a parmesan cheese dispenser I found at the dollar store – that makes it easy to sprinkle on things as needed. Scrub your sink using a rag or sponge. Use an old toothbrush to clean around the edges of the sink and scrub around the faucet. Rinse sink. Spray with a cleaner you like. I like using window cleaner, but today I only had this all-purpose spray, so I used that! If my sink is looking extra dull, I might shine it up a little extra with some inexpensive oil. This is a totally unnecessary step, but I like to do it sometimes to make it look more sparkly. Put a clean towel by the sink and enjoy! Having a good, shiny sink will help your whole kitchen function better. And, it gives you a sense of accomplishment! How to give your hike a high-tech upgrade

At its heart, hiking is about getting away from technology. Stuffing everything you need to survive for a few days into a bag and disappearing into the woods is as much about breaking free of the daily Twitter grind as it is about pushing yourself physically and connecting with nature. And while there's certainly something to be said for really roughing it, there's no rule that demands you give up all the creature comforts of modern living to enjoy camping. (If there were, all these ultralight hikers would be boiling water over a fire instead of using filters and stoves.) In fact, part of the allure of backpacking is all the gear. And anyone who tells you otherwise is full of it.

So, how do you boost the tech quotient of your backcountry setup without dragging all your figurative technological baggage with you? Well, let's start by upgrading some of basics, like water purification. If you're really old school you could go with some iodine or chlorine tablets. But, let's be frank: They taste like garbage. The more common solution is a filter, but they can clog, are sometimes tiring to use, and are quite a bit bulkier than a bottle of purification tablets.

Another essential is a knife, but don't settle for an old-school pocket knife like you had back in your scout days. Instead, upgrade to a multitool. I can't recommend the Leatherman Free P2 enough. I've been carrying the company's Juice CS4 for many, many years. (I've checked baggage on my way to CES just so that I wouldn't have to leave it behind.) But the Free P2 has quickly replaced it. The real game changer here is the ability to open all the tools quickly and easily with one hand. No more need to find a tool to open another tool. And the blades and everything lock in place, so you won't have to worry about accidentally closing it on your hand.

Garmin GPSMAP 66i

Alright, but what about something more traditionally "gadgety"? Well, you might want to check out the new Garmin GPSMAP 66i. To be completely honest with you, I'm generally not a fan of hiking GPS units. But this one from Garmin is pretty solid. It typically gets 35 hours on a charge, but in "expedition mode" you can extend that to a whopping 200. And, while you're out in the field, it does more than just put trail maps in your hand.

The topographic maps are useful for finding your way if you like to travel off trail, while a cellular data connection feeds you live weather updates -- so you have plenty of notice to hunker down in the face of an approaching storm. Oh, and if you happen to get lost or hurt, you can use the built-in inReach technology to send an SOS message... provided you pay for the subscription.

Garmin Fenix 5X Sapphire

And if you really want a touch of high-tech luxury out on the trail, Garmin's Fenix 5 X Sapphire might be the ticket. It's a high-end smartwatch built for the outdoors. It comes with maps for hiking and cycling, can track your training at the gym, and with its built-in GPS, GLONASS and Galileo receivers, it'll be almost impossible to get lost with. If paired with your phone, it can even notify your emergency contacts with just the push of a button if you get hurt or lost.

Then there are the standard smartwatch features like notifications, Spotify integration and support for Garmin Pay. Oh, and it actually looks decent too, so you won't want to immediately hide it in your bag when you wander back into town.

Nikon Monarch 5

One last thing to think about bringing with is a pair of binoculars. These aren't necessarily super high-tech, but they can bring the wonders of nature closer to you -- especially the wildlife, which, let me be blunt here, you should not be disturbing. The Monarch 5 from Nikon (specifically the 10x42 model) come highly recommended. They're reasonably compact, waterproof and won't fog up on you while you're scanning those distant mountaintops.

Add in a way to brew a decent cup of coffee (I personally use the MSR MugMate) and you should be good to go. And if you're not... if this is simply just not enough modern convenience and luxury for you. Maybe look into glamping. I hear it's all the rage.

Camping is one of the best ways to get away from the stress of daily life. At your campsite, you and your family can sleep and dine outdoors in a natural and refreshing environment. Whether you are planning to go on your first camping trip or you want to return to camping after a long break, the following tips and ideas will help you to have a great time.

1. Plan Your Activities in Advance

Create a list of camping activities for you and your children. This will help you avoid boredom and prevent the children from getting involved in dangerous stunts. A little brainstorming will help you to generate enough ideas to last for 1 to 3 days. Take a football, kite, board games, fishing gear, a compass and maps for learning and paint and craft items. Incorporate the “location” into the activities. Finds and paint pine cones if available to be a part of an upcoming holiday, bring a book on plants and have a scavenger hunt for the “safe” ones. Be creative in your teaching.

As such you can convert each camping trip to an educational excursion and adventure for your children. Take nature books along and allow the children to have a firsthand experience with the wonders of nature. Schedule photo sessions for both sunrise and sunset and take advantage of these times to capture unique photographs. Add more physical activities like hiking or kayaking if your campsite is near a river or lake.

2. Choose Your Camping Site With Care

The campsite you pick will determine how well you’ll enjoy your trip. Carefully plan how far you want to travel, the type of location (whether you want a coastal area or countryside forest). Decide whether you want to stay in a camp with a lot of facilities or a place in the wild.

Note that camps with plenty of amenities attract a lot of people and are very noisy while areas that are laid back and pristine usually lack basic facilities. Make sure you choose a campsite that is relatively safe so you don’t have to worry about fending off wild bears when you are meant to be sleeping. 3. Create a Camp Box

Creating a camp box can reduce the time you spend packing for your camping trip by half. Start by making a checklist of items you should take for a typical weekend camping trip. Your checklist should include the following: * Campsite Gear: sleeping bag and pad for each camper, pillows and blankets, heavy duty steel tent stakes and poles, ground cover, extra canopy or tarp, repair kit, chairs, headlamps and lanterns. * Kitchen Utensils: stove and fuel, lighter, firewood, pot and frying pan, portable coffee maker, trash bags, cooler, ice, water bottles, paper towel, bowls,plates, forks, spoons, and knives. * Personal Items: toothbrush, toothpaste, toiletries, soap, sunscreen, first aid kit, insect repellent, and any prescription medication.

Update your “Camp Box” as a family exercise after the trip. Have everyone offer suggestions/improvements and most important, what could have been left out.

4. Get Your Camping Gear Off-season

After you have written out the items for your typical camping trip, you need to go shopping to pick up those you don’t have at home. If you are planning for your first camping trip, you should avoid buying so many items during the peak season for hot weather tent camping.

Although June may seem like a nice time to go shopping for camp gear because of the variety of camping gear that will be on display, don’t do it. At this time, tents and other camping gear will be sold at peak prices. Instead, you should buy camping gear in early spring or winter. Many retailers also try to sell off their camp gear at the end of the summer, so you could get very good bargains at that time.

5. Prepare for Night Lighting

A campsite will feel lonely when walk around with light that is coming from your LED headlamp alone. You should have at least one or two extra lighting sources. These will make your campsite and tent look and feel safer and more exciting.

You may use a powerful rechargeable LED lantern that has about 200 to 250 lumens of light at night or a lantern powered by alkaline batteries. You may also use solar lamps that will be fully charged during the day and provide light for at least 12 hours at night.

6. Go Unplugged and Leave Some Gadgets at Home

Try going for a weekend without your smartphone, tablet or laptop. You will experience a refreshing sense of freedom that will linger for a long time. Going unplugged allows you to rely on your memory and improve your cognate ability instead of depending on Google for every single fact during a discussion with your friends and family. If you feel you will need your smartphone to take pictures, use a digital camera instead. Going without all the digital distractions will revive and rejuvenate your mind. Your attention span will improve and your mood will be transformed.

7. Be Creative With Meals

Plan your meals in advance. Make a list of your meals for each day (breakfast, lunch, dinner and two snacks between meals). Then choose simple recipes that you can easily use to cook at your campsite while focusing on meals that you can cook well over an open flame. You can even practice cooking breakfast meals like cinnamon roll-ups in your yard at home.

Before you set out, prepare some of the food at home. It will be easier to cut vegetables, marinate the meat and wrap potatoes in foil before going to your camp. Pack these into your cooler and set out the food meal by meal. Remember to take all the condiments and utensils you will need to serve each meal.

8. Leave No Trace

Make it your responsibility to practice the principles of “leave no trace” any time you go camping. These principles have been set out to keep campsites tidy. So you can return back month after month, year after year and still have a clean, safe and hygienic place to set up your tent. With the ever increasing number of people going for camping each year, we need to take care of our trash and avoid leaving our poop buried in shallow pits. It is important to stick to trails when moving around and avoid putting soap, food or human waste in streams and lakes.

Conclusion Apply these simple tips before and during your camping trip. Remember to maintain a positive attitude and make the best of your trip even if you experience unexpected changes in weather at your campsite.

As darkness and light rain both fell on a partner and I for the last couple of miles of a 27-mile dayhike the length of western Maine’s brutally rugged Mahoosuc Range, I slipped the Storm onto my head—which helped prevent my shuffling and occasional staggering from turning into falling. I also used this ultralight headlamp in campsites from Idaho’s City of Rocks National Reserve and Yosemite National Park to backpacking the Grand Canyon’s Thunder River-Deer Creek Loop. Few backcountry headlamps have the Storm’s range of features and power, and perhaps none do at its price. For starters, it sports 350 lumens of power in its two LED bulbs—a very bright spotlight and an excellent LED proximity beam for illuminating a campsite, tent interior, or a map or book page. That’s brighter than most headlamps in this weight class. Night vision mode offers three colors: the most common, red, plus green (useful for hunters because it doesn’t disturb game animals), and blue (which cuts through fog). The Storm is rated IP67, meaning it’s both dustproof and waterproof to one meter for up to 30 minutes.

As with other BD headlamps, the Storm has a couple of features I use frequently: Power Tap technology, which allows you to switch instantly between a dimmed level (that you set) and full brightness simply by tapping the side of the casing; and Brightness Memory, which lets you power the light on and off at a chosen brightness level without having to go to full power (draining batteries).

While the instructions can appear complicated at first glance, using the Storm is fairly intuitive; and anyone who’s owned a BD headlamp of recent vintage will find it familiar. Depress the power button once for on-off, twice to change modes—for instance, from spotlight to proximity beam in white, or from red to green to blue when in a night mode. Press it three times to enter strobe for whichever mode it’s in. In any mode, hold it down when turned on to dim and brighten. Hold two seconds to change between white and red LED modes, and double-click in red mode to switch to green and blue; all three colors have a strobe option.

Like other BD lamps, the Storm locks off by depressing the power button for four seconds (a blue light will blink rapidly for three seconds when it’s locked off)—a very useful feature to prevent accidentally draining your batteries inside your pack.

Operating on four AAA batteries, it has a longer battery life than many ultralight competitors: BD puts it at 40 hours of battery life at high power, and says that’s based on testing battery life down to the threshold of what is considered “usable” light, for which the industry standard (also used by other companies) is 0.25 lux at two meters. At low power, battery life is up to 120 hours, according to BD.

But that leads to a minor drawback of the Storm: Four batteries make it slightly heavier than the lightest headlamps, and it feels a little bulkier on your head. Although it never bobbed, even when hiking fast, runners may find it a little large. A lever lock provides easy access to the battery compartment without requiring a tool. “So this is where you grew up?”

“Yeah.”

Q stared out at the view, entranced. James snuck a glance athim and smiled slightly.

“We can go hiking tomorrow, if you want,” he offeredoffhandedly. “We are gonna be here several days. Did you bring your boots?”

“Mm-hm. Can we really?”

“Yeah. I’ll show you all the best hiding places.” He shot Qa grin as they approached a rusting, run-down gate. “I used to playhide-and-seek with Kincade for hours. Of course, he called it “trying to catchthat bloody bairn in time for dinner”, but that’s because he didn’t like me forthe first four years of my life.”

“What! I don’t believe you,” Q chuckled, punching James’shoulder lightly.

“It’s true, I was an unholy terror when…” James trailed off,as they pulled up to the house, and his expression became closed. Q stared,slightly disturbed by how quickly his friend had shut down. But then James wasunbuckling and climbing out of the car. Q followed, swinging his rucksack up onto his shoulder. He had his laptop with him, as well as his new and improvedportable solar panel for recharging the battery. He was going to work on vacation; as R, they needed him almost as muchas they needed Uncle Boothroyd. He’d just do it between hikes and explorations.

“James!”

An older man with a graying beard stepped around the cornerof the house—manor, really—and beamed. James laughed and strode to him.“Kincade! It’s been too long!”

“That it has,” Kincade chuckled, and shifted his shotgun outof the way so he could exchange a hug with James. Then Kincade’s eye fell on Q,still standing awkwardly by the car, and his grin turned sly. “And you must bethe Q he wrote about in his letters,” the old man greeted him.

“Yes, I am,” Q answered, with an amused glance at James; hewrote letters? And they included Q? James looked a bit pink, but he had hismost pleasant poker-face on. He must be very embarrassed indeed. “Pleased tomeet you, Mr. Kincade.”

“Just Kincade to any friend of James’. Come on, both of you,let’s get to my house. This place is too dreary today.”

James went with him gladly, so Q did, too.

James and Kincade chatted comfortably about the contents ofJames’ letters and the few interesting things that had happened to Kincade, andQ listened with half an ear, admiring the landscape and looking often at themanor. Then they turned away from it, and James suddenly pulled Q into theconversation.

“Hey, Q, why was Eve so excited about her motorcycle, I’veforgotten.”

“Liar,” Q sighed, “You never forget anything related to hermotorcycle. I modified it so it was quieter, but it’s got a few extrahorsepower,” he told Kincade, who did seem a little interested. “I also helpedher paint it, so now it’s matte black. She’s… very grateful.”

“She said she’d buy him ice cream every day for ten years,even though he’s the most expensive of our lot,” James elaborated, and laughedas Q made to kick him and missed.

“It’s not my fault all the good ice cream is expensive!”

“Yeah, but it’s your fault you’re so picky when it comes todessert and nothing else.”

“Picky? Who’s the one who won’t eat Ferrer Roche becausethey look like poop pebbles?”

“They do, though!”

They bickered back and forth for a while about sweets until Jamessuddenly turned on Kincade and demanded to know his opinion, and that set off atotally new tangent with all three of them arguing whether sours were better.

Kincade’s cottage was a cozy affair, and Q liked it at once.There was only one bedroom, but the big room that was sitting room, kitchen,library, and dining room all in one had a fireplace, within which danced a small,cheerful blaze, and the rug before the hearth was thick and soft. Q wouldn’tmind camping out here. In fact, James went right to the fire and dumped hissleeping bag and backpack next to it, on the opposite side from the stack offirewood. Q followed his example, looking around with interest. He sawelectrical appliances, though they were few, and a tall floor-lamp beside anold padded rocking chair. Most of the light came from the opened shutters,though. There was another chair, an armchair, that looked comfy and well-used.James immediately flopped into that.

Q found he was shivering, and drifted closer to the fire.There was nowhere else to sit, and he knew the rocking chair must be Kincade’s,so he settled cross-legged near the hearth with his back to the fire and soakedup the warmth.

“This is a very nice home you have,” he told Kincade, as thegroundskeeper settled into the rocking chair.

“Thank you, lad,” Kincade answered comfortably. “I hear youlike hikin’.”

“I’m out of practice, but yes. I used to think I was goingto be an artist—trying to draw landscapes and the like—but coding is an art,too.”

“I’ll take your word for it. I’ve never touched a computer.”

“Never?” Q’s eyes widened and he knew he looked unhealthily stunned.“Everyone’s used a computer theseday, even if it was for only one game of Solitaire!”

“Never had reason to,” Kincade replied, smiling indulgently.Q wondered what he must think of Q. What James’ letters had made him out to be.But he couldn’t just come right out and ask, now, could he? So he just shookhis head in wonder. Even the oldest nanas and grandads he knew had at least tried a computer.

But that wasn’t why they were here. So he asked, “Are theretrails near here?”

“Afraid not,” Kincade answered. “You’ll have to make duewith James’ bad memory.”

“My memory’s not thatbad!” James objected, rolling his eyes. Q smiled. James had the best memory Qknew of; it was just that he rarely used it for anything except studying. “Iremember everywhere I fell down.”

Kincade’s chuckle was a warm, bear’s rumble of a laugh. “Aslong as ye don’t toss him down a slope.”

Q’s smile widened. “I’ve been taking several self-defenseclasses. I believe I can dodge if he tries anything.”

They continued to chat, and then Kincade asked if they’d haddinner yet. When they answered in the negative, he stood and told James, “You’dbetter not have forgotten how to shoot a rifle, lad. We’re off for some supper.Have you ever shot anything?” Kincade asked Q.
