USAF's NGAD program will receive US$ 3.4 billion in the 2025 budget

The U.S. Department of the Air Force released a 2025 fiscal budget request of $217.5 billion on March 11, which includes $3.4 billion for the Next Generation Air Dominance (NGAD) family of systems to increase current and future platforms in highly contested environments.
Related to the NGAD is an investment of 14.9 billion dollars to maintain lethality in the air domain, in addition to 24.9 billion dollars to ensure the ability to carry out a global attack worldwide.
The budget requested for the NGAD project to develop an aircraft system to replace the F-22 airfield fighter was $1.6 billion in fiscal year 2023.

Air Force Secretary Frank Kendall declared in 2022 to the House Armed Services Committee that the U.S. Air Force expects to spend “several hundred millions” of dollars per aircraft (of the NGAD system).
The U.S. Air Force previously mentioned that it plans to grant the contract to build the NGAD fighter sometime in 2024 and carry out the development of the project by 2030.
Although no contractor or contractors have been identified, Lockheed Martin, Boeing, Textron and General Atomics could be likely suppliers.
One of the objectives of the NGAD project is to divide the design, production and maintenance contracts to involve a variety of companies to work in the NGAD.
In February 2024, Pratt & Whitney conducted an evaluation of its next-generation adaptive propulsion (NGAP) solution, advancing the program to finalize the detailed review of the project. NGAP intends to progress in the production of an energy plant for the NGAD game.

Pratt & Whitney, General Electric, Lockheed Martin, Boeing and Northrop Grumman each received a ten-year contract worth $975 million for the NGAP program in August 2022.
The sixth-generation NGAD fighter will work in partnership with mission-focused unmanned platforms, working with advanced weapons, electronic warfare systems and sensors to ensure maximum survivability in contested environments.

A U.S. National Science Foundation–supported team has announced a breakthrough in quantum network engineering. By “stretching” thin films of diamond, they created quantum bits that can operate with significantly reduced equipment and expense. The change also makes the bits easier to control.
The researchers hope the findings, published in Physical Review X, can make future quantum networks more feasible.
“This technique lets you dramatically raise the operating temperature of these systems, to the point where it’s much less resource-intensive to operate them,” said Alex High of UChicago, who led the study.
Quantum bits, or qubits, have unique properties that interest scientists searching for the future of computing networks — for example, they could be made virtually impervious to hacking attempts. But there are significant challenges to work out before it could become a widespread, everyday technology.
One of the chief issues with qubits lies within the “nodes” that would relay information along a quantum network. The qubits that make up these nodes are very sensitive to heat and vibrations, so scientists must cool them down to extremely low temperatures to work.
“Most qubits today require a special fridge the size of a room and a team of highly trained people to run it, so if you’re picturing an industrial quantum network where you’d have to build one every 5 or 10 kilometers, now you’re talking about quite a bit of infrastructure and labor,” said High. 
High’s lab worked with researchers from Argonne National Laboratory, a U.S. Department of Energy national lab affiliated with UChicago, to experiment with the materials these qubits are made from to see if they could improve the technology. 
One of the most promising types of qubits is made from diamonds. Known as Group IV color centers, these qubits are known for their ability to maintain quantum entanglement — connectivity between particles, such as electrons or photons, even when separated — for relatively long periods, but to do so they must be cooled down to just a smidge above absolute zero.
The team wanted to tinker with the material’s structure to see what improvements they could make — a difficult task given how hard diamonds are. But the scientists found that they could “stretch” out the diamond at a molecular level if they laid a thin film of diamond over hot glass. As the glass cools, it shrinks at a slower rate than the diamond, slightly stretching the diamond’s atomic structure — like how pavement expands or contracts as the earth cools or warms beneath it. 
“The potential for quantum-based information technologies is high,” said Tom Kuech, a program director in NSF’s Directorate for Engineering. “This project is part of NSF’s continuing efforts to provide the underpinning research into the manufacturing science needed to make these approaches a technological reality.”

ADVEW will replace legacy systems with a one-box solution
GOLETA, Calif., Dec. 19, 2023 /PRNewswire/ -- The United States Navy awarded Raytheon, an RTX (NYSE: RTX) Business, an $80 million contract in a down select to prototype Advanced Electronic Warfare, or ADVEW, for the F/A-18 E/F Super Hornet. This prototype will be considered as a replacement for the existing AN/ALQ-214 integrated defensive electronic countermeasure and AN/ALR-67(V)3 radar warning receiver with a consolidated solution that will deliver superior electronic warfare capabilities to the backbone of the Navy's carrier air wing.
"These advancements are paving the way for the next generation of electronic warfare," said Bryan Rosselli, president of Advanced Products & Solutions at Raytheon. "We are completely replacing and consolidating the legacy systems into a one-box solution that will deliver a generational refresh to the electronic warfare capability for the lifetime of the Super Hornet."
Raytheon's Advanced Electronic Warfare offering will provide significant performance upgrades by modernizing existing electronic warfare systems into fewer components and incorporating government-defined open architecture. Development of this new solution will closely align and integrate with other combat-proven, radio frequency sensors and effectors employed by the Super Hornet. ADVEW will ensure F/A-18E/Fs maintain their operational electronic warfare advantage, while significantly improving survivability against advanced, complex threats.
Development and testing of ADVEW will mainly take place in Goleta, California. During the prototype phase, the system will undergo preliminary design review, critical design review, and flight testing over a 36-month period.
