Pop Culture Builds 13: Guts (Berserk)
It is a known truth that we are shaped by our history. Like the hammer and flame of the forge, our experiences make us who we are today.
Of course, sometimes those experiences are far too much for any human to safely bear. Some traumas are so great that you cannot endure them without something breaking. The only question then becomes whether you break entirely, or only in vital places, turning you into someone… something else.
In the case of Guts, the hero of the Berserk manga and anime, he was subject to such horrors since literal day one, born from his lynched mother’s body, raised by an abusive mercenary that he was forced to kill in self-defense, and even betrayed by his closest friend and mentor in a way so utterly violent and gruesome that I won’t recount it here. It’s safe to say that Berserk as a work of fiction is one that you pay attention to the age rating on. It is not hyperbole in the slightest.
These traumatic events, however, forged Guts into a vicious warrior with only one thing on his mind: killing the friend who betrayed him and every single demon he could find. Every last one.
And with that determination and an arsenal of weapons and tools, (greatest of which was his massive sword: Dragonslayer), he set out to do just that. However, the darkness in his heart festered, and threatened to turn him into a monster not unlike the very demons he hated so much, but he found friendship and purpose in others again, and found that his strength, and the path to a lasting peace, was in his bond with them.
Just as yesterday’s entry was an icon of a genre, today we’re looking at an icon of a trope, specifically of the stoic anime badass with an absurdly large and heavy weapon. Such characters throughout fiction often owe a lot to this man, the warrior in black with a fury behind his remaining eye threatening to go Berserk at any moment.
Guts is human, though at times he can seem to be much more than that. It’s not super important to the build though, though the extra feat will help with the build.
For this build, I wanted a class and archetype combination that rewards you for wielding a massive greatsword, but also has an edge of a dark side, lurking under the surface. To that end, I decided on a multiclass build. The first class is fighter with the two-handed fighter archetype, which turns Guts into an absolutely destructive attacker with his greatsword.
Meanwhile, the second class is at least five levels of barbarian with the fearsome defender archetype, making him resistant to pain and bolstering his intimidation factor, in addition to how the rage simulates the influence of the Black Beast side of his psyche.
With these classes comes some customization, so I recommend that your weapon training immediately be put into the sword weapon group, though you can probably spare one to take the advanced weapon training ability armed bravery, which improves the bravery ability to function with all will saves, not just those related to fear, as well as defensive weapon training to buff his defenses, focused weapon to improve the damage dice with mastery, and the like.
Meanwhile, we’ve also got about two rage powers to select as well. I recommend strength surge and powerful blow.
As for feats to give Guts, you’ve got the obvious stuff like power attack, cleave, vital strike, and all those lovely options, but don’t forget things like great fortitude, iron will, and even toughness, things which can go a long way to improve his endurance in the face of overwhelming odds.
Equipment is where things get really interesting for Guts. Firstly, the Dragonslayer sword, which is easily an adamantine greatsword to start off, with ghost touch and demon-bane at minimum for enchantments. Additionally, you can also load him up with the unique weapons of his repeated crossbow and the hidden cannon (probably based on a hand culverin or double hackbut) built into his prosthetic hand. Don’t forget that he also packs throwing knives and a small supply of alchemical explosives for emergencies.
The real kicker, however, is designing the berserker armor, a suit of armor that in the source material, subdues the sense of pain and all other emotions other than bloodlust and literally uses internal spines to hold the user’s body together and keep them in the fight. Staunching and fortification are a must, but the berserker armor is likely a unique cursed set of armor of the “can be used normally at great cost” variety, letting the raging warrior fight on past the edge of reason at the risk of killing them as they push themselves futher beyond their limits.
Of course, other builds are possibly. You could go full fighter or full barbarian if you wished, or even experiment with a variant of the amoral corruption (hey, that thing I wrote!) that plays up the struggle with the monstrous side of the character.
The haunted warrior with a massive blade is so ubiquitous that this build transcends the original source, though you certainly can never claim that it has no connection to Guts or his many imitators over the years.
That does it for today, but tomorrow we’ll see our final subject!

FEATURE: Love After World Domination Uplifts A Familiar Twist With Adorable Dedication
Tumblr media
At its best, fan fiction can be a vivid read between the lines. Whether it’s an unofficial follow-up, an unforeseen romantic pairing, or a simple slice of life diversion from the main story, it allows for the creative expression of fandom in what is typically a one-way street of enjoying pop culture — the creator creates and the consumer consumes. So when I say that a series feels like its own fan fiction, I don’t mean that in a bad way. Love After World Domination, centered around the secret romance between the leading hero of a Power Rangers-esque supergroup and the “Reaper Princess” of a comical legion of doom, is a light and funny excursion from a long-going war between the two factions. It plays out like fan fiction from whatever bigger universe is there, and I really enjoy it for that.
For those that haven’t watched, the leading man of the “Gelato Five” is Fudo, clad in the traditional red outfit of a tokusatsu show leader by day and typically found lifting weights in the gym at any other time. Across the aisle, we see Desumi, aka the Reaper Princess of Gekko, a collection of outlandish villains who, like all good villains, enjoy sitting at a big table and hashing out their schemes. These two groups are pre-destined to fight one another in Saturday morning fashion, perhaps forever, and if you need an example of the tone of the series, accompanying Desumi into combat is Culverin Bear, a large, well, bear who simultaneously serves as both henchman and extra comic relief.
RELATED: 5 Romantic Comedies To Watch If You Like Kaguya-sama: Love Is War - Ultra Romantic
Tumblr media
However, when Fudo and Desumi meet, sparks fly. Fudo is supposed to represent “The aroma of strawberry, the flavor of justice” but he and Desumi come to spend most of the battles hiding away from their respective teams and flirting somewhere where they can’t be seen. The “hands grasping” test of strength that’s everywhere from battle anime to pro wrestling becomes an excuse for them to just hold hands all the time, for they have to be sneaky if they want to meet up outside of combat. This burgeoning romance provides a learning curve for both of them, as the one thing they don’t teach you when you’re training to be a fantastical super-soldier is dating cues.
It’s here that Love After World Domination progresses from what could be a one-joke series to an effortlessly watchable journey. The “enemies become lovers” twist isn’t exactly new, but it’s the show’s glee with the minutiae of it all that helps it rise above. There’s your requisite blushing, but the series takes time to examine all of the things that would happen in an actual new relationship, even if saving/destroying the world wasn’t a factor. For example, in order to communicate better with Desumi, Fudo has to learn how to use a smartphone. He has to learn how to plan dates that don’t just involve what he’s interested in. He has to learn simple body language that comes much harder to him than the countless bicep curls he’s used to. And Love After World Domination wastes no time getting around to it.
RELATED: Eldin Ring Is My Favorite Romance Anime
Tumblr media
All of it gives off the vibe of fan fiction, which, again, isn’t a criticism in the slightest. There are countless moments in more straightforward versions of this story that would lead you to play a game of “What if?” ranging from little references dropped to even whole subplots that never quite reach the potential they could. And as Love After World Domination progresses, it expands on the premise to investigate other characters and how they’d react to the goings-on of a mysterious coupling between hero and arch foe. Some are clueless and some cynically curious. What could Fudo possibly be up to? He’s the Red leader. He’s not meant to be hunched over a phone trying to work through plans to visit an amusement park. He’s supposed to be ... doing whatever scant opportunities a life outside of the dedication to fighting cartoonish crime allows.
The spring 2022 season has a few that follow the same pattern of toying with familiar narratives — the most famous example right now is likely SPY x FAMILY, a show that balances thrills with domestic comedy in a way that I'm also a big fan of. What these have in common is a way to enjoy characters that isn’t the purely aspirational trappings of a grimmer genre. So much so that saving the world can become an afterthought. Who can focus on that when you have a date in 20 minutes?

John T Mainer 28840: I drank the Cruel-Aid
I drank the Cruel-Aid
I was under contract to the Temple of the Cog Purity of Code division. Now in most civilized places, this would be a mental health issue, but Half Baked Harrison was on the Drake Novum (that is the harmless end) to Evil Santa (that is the bad end) spectrum of crazy; so crazy that you might just infect the machine god with Bad Code, or reshape reality in ways that make the gears mesh poorly, and interrupt the trade that Cogwork Port’s famous corruption skimmed off to keep the lights on and dens of iniquity paid up on the bribes that let government officials and police live comfortably.
Half Baked Harrison had unlocked the Chroniode and somewhere he and it were bound, and likely to destroy the universe, or a few universes. Before I met Unification and Xeon I felt terrible about that, now honestly I felt a trim here or there might be OK, but the Temple of the Cog was paying the bills, and they were deeply in the No Chroniode Ever and this means YOU school of thought, so we were a hunting.
We got jumped by Darius Darknoll, his personal guard gave us quite a fight, but we came loaded for bear, so pirates were less of an issue.
Catching a Planetary Defense Laser on my upraised shield, I felt the capacitors whine as the built in Laser Shield and niode matrix augmentation bled most of the energy off, and the tough Ferrite-crystal ceramite matrix of the physical shield shattered scale after scale of armour applique to protect the energy grid beneath. I had a lock on Darius before he fired, and since he always shot right and dodged left, I slew my Culverin cannon wide and walked the burst inward blindly, holding when I heard the scream of ricochets indicating I had ranged his mangy pirate hull.
His Namtar was a classic choice for beating up newbies, it was easy to conceal in the buildings of the port zone, and hard to detect when it was shut down as it had no passive energy screens whose fields were so damned hard to mask. It was about half my Redeemer’s 105 ton mass and a crappy choice to face my scarred pirate hunting troops.
The automatic polarization of my cockpit and flare shields of my displays had darkened when the Planetary Defense laser overrode my flare compensation, but they were clearing when I saw the hatch on the Namtar start to undog so Darius could escape. I popped the hatch on my Redeemer and slid down the fast rope descender; which you can do when you win the fight, and aren’t fighting dump shock like Darius.
When he crawled out of his cockpit, I flipped him over with my boot and stuck a 20mm Ice Bear Ice pistol in his left eyesocket and said hello.
“Darius, Darius, Darius” I said sadly grinding the Ice Bear into his artificial left eye. “All I wanted was where Half Baked Harrison was, I didn’t want to collect the bounty on your pirate ass today. All you had to do was give up Harrison, and you could have spent the day shaking down new pilots and lying to your buddies about how scary you are. Now we are here. So. Spill pretty boy, where is Half Baked, or do I pop you and start down your list of cousins until one of you gets smarter?”
Darius tried to kick me, but dump shock made it more like a seal flailing on broken ice so I just rapped him with the butt of the pistol on the forehead to remind him that was a bad idea. We were just getting into the serious I-ask-he-swear-I-break-he-scream part of the conversation when a familiar voice sounded from right behind me.
“Fighting is such thirsty work, and it solves nothing. Not unless you drink the Chaos Cruel-Aid, then oh then such wonders you will see! Such wonders!”
Frack me with a Red Ant. That sounded like Half Baked Harrison.
I turned, and there he was. Half Baked Harrison, holding a bottle of what looked like single malt whiskey, if single malt whiskey carried an energy field that seemed to bend light and emit enough alpha particles to be warm at about a two foot range.
There was a Xeon symbol on it, and it proudly proclaimed it was “Chroniode Filtered, made from the distilled suffering of two universes”, and had to be way more dangerous than a nuclear weapon of the same size.
Darius swore softly from the ground and shouted “Half Baked, we frigging got shot to doll rags buying you time to escape, and you want to offer this Clan boy a drink!”
Half Baked nodded, and his voice went…..wierd. Deep. Compelling. It resonated, its like the shadows seemed to collect around him.
“You cannot break the status quo, the order of Mecha Galaxy has been written in every corruption, the gap between the haves and have nots, the balance of power that everyone defends has killed the madness, the chaos that yearns to be free. This can set it free. Drink the Cruel Aid, and UNLEASH CHAOS!”
Harrisons voice echoed like a mecha loudspeaker, and I felt the storm winds of the Wild Hunt roaring at the edges of reality, the blood winds, the raven winds, the call to battle. Not the careful measured and planned battle of neat lines and formations, careful scouting and measured contingency plans, but the mad slaughter of axe and hammer, gun and knife. The clash at the breach, the night of confusion and fire where the only reality is the foe in front of you and the certain death one step behind.
I had a clan. Hell I lead a clan, yet this Cruel Aid promised one sip and that safe world of established power and position would disappear into chaos, confusion, blood and thunder.
Or I could return his ass, file and invoice and draw contract base pay plus combat bonus and minimal salvage, less fuel, gate fees, taxes, and munitions expended. The paperwork, or blood and madness?
With a snarl I took the bottle, knocked the neck off on the foot armour of my Redeemer mecha and drank the whole damned thing down. The power of the Chroniode infused it. I felt, things, shifting. Reality took on a ripple as quantum states shifted between possible outcomes before my eyes. What was/was not/could be/must be/might be shifted and shuffled and I knew that Chaos was in me.
I drank the Cruel Aid, now the world would change, perhaps it would burn, and I would be dancing among the ashes, to victory, to defeat, to glory or infamy. I had no idea. Let the winds of Chaos blow, and those who dare mount their mecha and write their legends in blood and fire.

Love After World Domination – 06 – Beauty and the Beach
Tumblr media
Summer’s here, and Desumi wants to do summer dating stuff with Fudou. Fudou’s completely on board, but doesn’t know if he can handle Desumi in a swimsuit (even though her villainess uniform is basically occult lingerie). But if anyone can arrange it so their respective teams have a battle on the beach, it’s these two.
Tumblr media
Back at Gekko’s cafeteria (which I stress is not an evil cafeteria, just a regular cafeteria…which is great) We get more of Beast Princess and Desumi interacting, which is never not fun times. Beast is basically an earlier version of Desumi before she found love, but while Beast thinks Desumi should mind her evil image, she also seems to idolize her from afar.
Tumblr media
That said, they’re both the same rank of Princess, which is below the boss-level Monster rank (Culverin Bear is technically Desumi’s boss). So it comes as a great and sudden shock when Bosslar gathers both ranks together to announce the creation of a new unit: one that will be lead by Desumi once she undergoes genetic merging with a Mountain Gorilla. She’s being promited to Monster…and all Monsters were once humans.
Tumblr media
The downright strange ramifications of these are too simply much to go into in this brief recap, but suffice it to say I love how the show went there, and simultaneously treats it as a goofy joke and also deadly serious when it comes to Desumi. We also go in-depth into her family life as they call to congratulate her. But Desumi doesn’t want to be a monster. She wants to be a girl…Fudou’s girl.
Tumblr media
All it takes is answering her phone in her native Hakata dialect for Fudou to sense something’s up, and like the Perfect Boyfriend he is, rushes right over to meet her on her roof. She asks him what he thinks she should do, but he tells her it doesn’t matter; she should do what she wants. He’s been with her long enough to know that while there’s no one kinder than her, she needs to turn that kindness inward more.
Tumblr media
Desumi doesn’t want to be irrevocably transformed into an eldritch abomination, and never did, so she turns it down. Instead, she informs Bear that she got a tip (from Fudou) that Gelato would be doing test runs in part of the tokusatsu mech Gelato Robo. The Bear, Steel, and Beast and their underlings thus don beachwear and stake the place out. On the Robo Submarine, Misaki and Haru are also in a beachy mood.
Tumblr media
In a brilliant sequence of misunderstandings about what she’s watching, Beast, whose real name is Majima Kiki, witnesses Desumi emerge from their hiding spot to take Red Gelato on, bury him in the sand to torture him (actually just for fun), smash his head in (actually a watermelon), and infiltrate the enemy (going to say Hi to Haru and meet Misaki). Because she’s not wearing her usual getup, no one knows she’s Reaper Princess.
Tumblr media
Instead, Misaki simply realizes the truth: whoever this Desumi is, she and Fudou are dating, and she’s made Fudou a better and more open person. It’s probably the first time Desumi has been told she’s had a positive impact on Fudou, since she is usually fixated on the positive impact he’s had on her.
After some barbecue, fireworks, and sparklers, Big Gelato prepares to fire the big finale, but accidentally closes one of the missile hatches. Kiki, who had been being chased by Blue Gelato (who is apparently a cad) the whole time, witnesses the resulting explosion just as Desumi is rejoining her, laughing the whole time.
Of course, Kiki mistakes Reaper’s giddy laughter over what a fun day at the beach she’s had as sadistic pleasure in the wake of the destruction of the Gelato submarine. Desumi’s true superpower seems to be tremendously good luck, such that she doesn’t even have to hide how she acts and feels; her comrades will simply assume something else entirely.
