A simple young man, Hans Castorp, travels to Davos in Switzerland to visit his sick cousin in the famous lung sanatorium. Soon he gets a diagnose himself and stays there for seven years. Let's leave the plot directly and go to my personal problem with Thomas Mann and also this book. I might call it a love-hate relationship. . I had a good time for months with this text, but there were big ups and downs. In my sight, Mann has two huge talents, intelligence and boredom. For hundred of pages I read about negligibilities, though Mann gave me a proper image of the location and connections. But several sections full of sentences like "In February there are no more twelve months to come in the year, but ten.", what is it good for? At that time, the characters in the clinic are very active and not bored, means it doesn't portray the situation. Even more trivial passages were to come. Is the boredom a metaphor? Doesn't feel so. . And bam! Castorp's friend Settembrini, with his love for humankind, gets into these great arguments with Leo Naptha, kind of a religious nihilist. They are perfect counterparts and we suddenly have Thomas Mann at it's best. He gave me so many new thoughts, even though I think one does not understand all of these parts. Such well researched, deep and psychological dialouges, that I suddenly winced and asked myself, in which book am I? These are the passages that made it worth reading it! First I didn't like Settembrini because of his (unwillingly) arrogant behavior towards Castorp, but with these arguments, he became one of my favorites. . The book wasn't magical, I guess the titel speaks about the difference between the folk "down there" and those in the clinic. In the end, a new infection gets it's way to the sanatorium, ethnic hatred. Together with a morbid bad temper of the patients, a strange feeling comes up, which portrays the evening before the First World War. That was masterclass! . #thomasmann #derzauberberg #zauberberg #themagicmountain #magicmountain #worldwari #literature #bookstagram #classicliterature #igreads #visualsoflife #davos #graubuenden #leseempfehlung #sanatorium #литература #томасманн #волшебнаягора #букстаграм https://www.instagram.com/p/CMVAD5dhbUF/?igshid=1b357ayoezbsn
