“Are you excited?” Sunoo asked, bouncing up and down in his seat as we neared the school.
“You certainly seem to be.” I grimaced. My stomach ached at the thought of him running off with somebody else when we entered, but for now, we were huddled in the backseat of Jay’s car, taking selfies and bothering the driver with our sudden outbursts of loud singing.
“Of course I am! It’s senior year, we’re kicking it off with a big party that I helped plan, and I have a date!” He smiled. “Y/n, you’ll have a great time; I wouldn’t have agreed to set you up with Kangmin if I didn’t know that you two would be perfect for each other.”
Oddly enough, his attempt at reassurance really didn’t make me feel any better; I leaned my head against the window with a wry grin before joining Yuna in belting out the lyrics to whatever song was on the radio, just thankful that playing off my heart being shattered as simple nervousness seemed to be working.
Jay dropped us off at the door, telling us to wait for him and try to find the pair joining us.
“Sun!” We whipped around to find who I assumed to be Jesse; very attractive, smiling very bright, and way too comfortable wrapping their arms around someone they’d only known for going on a month now. Of course, Sunoo beamed equally as bright, introducing us briefly before the pair started talking about something that happened while they were decorating. “Oh, there’s Kangmin!”
I turned to find a vaguely familiar, smiling boy approaching from the crowd. He was handsome, of course, and from our conversations over the past week (and my brief Twitter stalking in the car earlier), I knew he was sweet, too. I just couldn’t help but still look at Sunoo, who was giving me an overly enthusiastic thumbs up, as he approached.
“Hey.” The boy gave a small wave, smiling at Jesse, then Sunoo, and finally, me. “You’re y/n, right?” I nodded simply, mirroring his small smile before turning back to Sunoo and Jesse.
“Everybody ready to go in?” Jay asked, jogging up from the depths of the crowd. I regretted my affirmative when I watched Sunoo shyly slip his hand into Jesse’s, the pair smiling at each other and continuing their conversation as we made our way in.
-
To be honest, it was kind of fun (at first). Kangmin, Jay, Yuna, and I crowded together to hear each other, eating whatever other students leftover and occasionally dancing sporadically to whatever song was playing. The conversation actually made me feel a lot better during the close watch I was keeping on Sunoo and Jesse, walking around to talk to different groups and dance, off in their own little world. My heart physically hurt watching them drag each other around by the hand, talking and laughing with what seemed like a thousand of their other closest friends.
The nail in the coffin, however, was when a slow song started playing, the conversation my group was immersed in seemingly dying down just in time.
Sunoo and Jesse were in between friend groups when it started, Jesse stopping promptly in their tracks as Sunoo looked back inquisitively. They took his other hand in theirs and pulled him closer, both laughing at first as they stuck their hands out and turned in circles on stiff legs. Then, he pulled them flush to him, wrapping his arms around them and letting his lips brush against their forehead as he whispered something to make them laugh.
I couldn’t take it any longer: not when his eyes landed on me, smile beaming as bright as ever, gesturing excitedly to his partner before he turned his attention back to what they were saying.
My eyes shifted to glance at Jay and Yuna, their eyes fixed on the happy couple as well as they whispered to each other. I patted Jay’s arm as I walked away quickly, muttering about the bathroom before finally pushing my way out into the cold, dark hallway on the other side of the commons.
My tears felt virtually scalding as I speed walked away, keeping pace until I finally felt like I could breathe again, until I was no longer able to hear the music or feel the pulse in my feet. I finally leaned against a pillar and blinked slowly until the tears dissipated; I didn’t want to cry, especially not now when I’d inevitably have to get back in the car with the boy I was about to cry over. I opened my eyes to reveal the tall ceiling of the gym, hanging banners for different sports teams illuminated in the moonlight from the windows that brushed the very tops of the walls. Suddenly, my ears decided to register the sounds of a ball falling and shoes squeaking against the waxed floor echoing around me; I wasn’t alone. I peaked out shyly from my spot near the door, eyes met by a familiar figure bending to retrieve a soccer ball with a huff.
“Kangmin?” I was immediately filled with regret when the boy actually heard me, turning to find me blinking at him from behind the bleachers.
“Oh, y/n? What are you doing here, is the party over already?” He shuffled his feet awkwardly, a nervous smile playing on his features.
“Uh, no, I just… needed some air,” I said, coming further out into the light. Now that I thought about it, I couldn’t remember exactly when he’d left; I didn’t recall seeing him on my way out. “How long have you been in here?” I asked.
“Not long, probably just one song. Uh, what about you?” He asked, sitting on the bleachers nearby.
“Me too. Just one song.” I said. The image of Sunoo smiling at me over Jesse’s shoulder flashed back into my mind briefly, my lips stretching into a thin line as I occupied the seat next to my partner.
“Something on your mind?” He asked. I shook my head, not exactly comfortable dumping all of my feelings out onto this stranger. “Not very convincing but okay.” He said after a brief silence. I chuckled quietly, watching him roll the ball between his feet for a few beats.
“What about you? Why are you in here if there’s nothing on your mind either?” I asked. He smiled at the ground, stopping the ball and kicking it up into his open hands.
“Just wanted some air.” He said. A beat of understanding passed between us; a pair of idiots completely and utterly besotted by our best friends of all people.

180708 SIWOO Fancafe Update
Title: It’s been a while~~
Hello? This is Siwoo 😊 Long time, no see! I'm feeling uneasy writing a fancafe post!!! Are you over with your harsh weekly schedule? Tomorrow is Monday; the day that everybody hates. You cannot escape the Monday, though. You know the old saying: "If you can't avoid it, enjoy it". It's Kangmin’s motto, too. I'll be here more often, so give me more cheers! Thanks!!!
