HOUSTON, TX– In a bold statement, undefeated WBA World Champion David Morrell Jr. (10-0, 9 KOs) has declared that rising star Edgar Berlanga (22-0, 17 KOs), who is fresh off his sixth-round knockout over Padraig McCrory (18-1, 9 KOs), is nowhere near his level and that he would dispatch him in just one round if given the chance.
Morrell Jr., coming off a string of impressive victories since his dominant performance over Alantez Fox to capture the WBA World title, minced no words in his assessment of Berlanga's recent success.
"Berlanga is simply not on my level,” said Morrell Jr. “I've watched his fights, and I see nothing that worries me. Berlanga sucks, and I would destroy him. If we ever step into the ring together, I'll knock him out in one round, guaranteed."
With his sights set on solidifying his status as one of the most formidable champions in the division, Morrell Jr. remains fearless by any challenge that comes his way.
"I'm here to prove that I'm the best," concluded Morrell Jr. "Whether it's Berlanga, or anyone else, I'll be ready to step into the ring and show the world what I'm made of. I’m the best fighter in the super middleweight division, and soon everyone will know that."

Aunque usted no lo crea, el histórico Floyd Mayweather Jr. se puso esta vez del lado del Canelo Álvarez en su postura sobre no pelear con Benavidez. Le mandó ese mensaje a Benavidez.
Es uno de solamente dos peleadores que han derrotado a Saúl Álvarez y, aunque suele referirse al mexicano en tono crítico, esta vez Floyd Mayweather Jr. defiende al Canelo sobre su negativa a pelear con David Benavidez, que es el rival natural en las 168 libras para el tapatío.
Mayweather y Canelo pelearon hace una década, en septiembre del 20214, siendo aquella la primera derrota de Saúl Álvarez como peleador profesional. El pelirrojo pasó 8 años invicto, hasta que Dmitry Bivol le ganó en las 175 libras, y en más de una ocasión Floyd Jr. dijo cosas poco favorecedoras del hoy Campeón Mundial Indiscutido de los Supermedianos.
¿Qué dijo Mayweather del Canelo Álvarez vs Benavidez?
Si alguien sabe de negocios es Floyd, quien hizo una tremenda fortuna a lo largo de su invicta carrera en los cuadriláteros. Desde esa óptica, el apodado Money Mayweather justificó que Canelo Álvarez no quiera enfrentar a Benavidez y hasta un par de importantes halagos le dedicó al de Guadalajara.
“Los peleadores tienen que hacer lo que es mejor para ellos, cada uno maneja su negocio de forma diferente y solamente puedo desearle lo mejor. Al final del día, Canelo es un futuro Salón de la Fama y un peleador increíble”, declaró el estadounidense al medio FightHype.
El consejo de Floyd Mayweather a David Benavidez
Por otra parte, Money Mayweather dio un consejo a David Benavidez para que, eventualmente, Álvarez Barragán no tenga alternativa más que aceptar el reto por el que millones de aficionados esperan, luego de acusarse de “miedoso y correlón” al Canelo.
“Si David Benavidez sigue venciendo a peleador tras peleador y campeón tras campeón, eventualmente será el hombre. Y entonces todos querrán pelear contra él. Al igual que yo, tienes que esperar tu turno. David Benavidez es un luchador increíble. Todo lo que David tiene que hacer es seguir saliendo y venciendo a los muchachos, manteniéndose concentrado, y entonces será el indicado”, apuntó.
¿Cuándo es la próxima pelea del Canelo Álvarez?
Dada la reciente ruptura entre Saúl Álvarez y Premier Boxing Champions (PBC), al momento es una incógnita quién será el próximo rival del Canelo, aunque todo apunta a que el mexicano peleará el sábado 4 de mayo en Las Vegas, con distintas opciones para ser su contrincante.
Jermall Charlo se había apuntado públicamente como el siguiente rival para buscar vengar la derrota de su hermano Jermell en septiembre pasado, sin embargo, el modesto éxito en la venta de los Pagos Por Evento de aquel pleito -supuestamente- fueron la razón por la que PBC pidió al Canelo Álvarez buscar otro oponente.
A partir de eso, la relación se quebró y ahora Canelo Álvarez busca empresa para montar su función con motivo de las celebraciones del Cinco de Mayo, con los nombres del puertorriqueño Edgar Berlanga y el mexicano Jaime Munguía sobre la mesa.

Edgar Berlanga knocks out Padraig McCrory in six rounds
ORLANDO, FL - The Caribe Royale has become one of boxing’s premier venues, with the intimate convention center consistently hosting a bevy of high-quality cards from top to bottom. This night would be no exception.
In front of a largely partisan Puerto Rican crowd with its fair share of Irish supporters that battled furiously back and forth in support of their fighters, Edgar Berlanga (21-0, 17 KOs) overcame a slow start against Ireland’s Padraig McCrory (18-1, 9 KOs) to score a sixth-round knockout.
After numerous rounds where neither man seemed to take the initiative, Berlanga opened up in the sixth round, landing right hands continually. Finally, McCrory went down, and referee Christopher Young stopped the bout.
Berlanga earned a TKO at the 2:44 mark of the sixth round.
Berlanga began his career with 16 straight first-round knockouts. But since being taken the distance against Demond Nicholson in 2021, the Brooklyn native has looked progressively worse at times. Not only has his power been inconsequential in recent fights, but he looked uncomfortable at times.
After five decisions in a row, Berlanga got the demons off his back and a boost of confidence, finally scoring a stoppage. With the victory, Berlanga has put himself in a position to take on the undisputed super middleweight Canelo Alvarez.
Although Berlanga showed he has the support of the Puerto Rican fanbase, it would do him well to keep improving before cashing out against Alvarez.
Andy Cruz cruises through 10 rounds to earn a unanimous decision
In the co-main event, one of boxing’s most hyped prospects, Andy Cruz (3-0,1 KO), continued his ascent upward on the lightweight ladder. The 2020 Olympic gold medalist was a massive -10000 favorite over his opponent and proved the oddsmakers correct, dominating his opponent, Brayan Zamarripa (14-3,5 KOs), in every round. Cruz showed a majority of his weaponry by applying pressure and throwing in combinations. The Cuban landed pin-point pot shots that froze his opponent whenever they landed.
Zamarripa didn’t present much of a challenge for the Olympian, but at least Cruz gained more experience by going the total 10-round distance. Cruz was awarded the unanimous decision victory with scores of 100-90 from all three judges.
The amount of praise that has been heaped upon Cruz is, at times, overboard. However, much like his fellow Olympian Vasiliy Lomachenko a decade ago, the Cuban looks primed and ready for a title opportunity with less than five fights on his resume.
