Women’s Soccer Globally: July 2, 2023
Around the world, women's soccer is in flux. There have been an incredible number of advancements in the last four years, but the increased media coverage has revealed a myriad of shortcomings as well. To be fair to the sport, I want to mention both here.
Norway and New Zealand were the only countries with equal pay between men and women in the 2019 World Cup; since then England, Brazil, Australia, and the USA have ratified similar policies. In Europe especially, women’s soccer is drawing sold-out, record breaking crowds. The women’s 2022 UEFA final drew 87,000 fans to Wembley Stadium in London, breaking the record for women’s AND men’s European championship game attendance. As much as western Europe remains a steady powerhouse of women’s soccer, other continents are starting to embrace women’s soccer as well. Morocco qualified for their first World Cup after unveiling a plan in 2020 to make the country a contender in the African Soccer Confederation, and proving that countries who commit resources to their women’s teams can and will see success.
However, equal pay in some countries definitely doesn’t mean equality is the priority in others. France, Canada, and Spain, all exceptionally well-funded and top-ranked teams, faced player strikes in early 2023 due to poor treatment of players by coaches and federations. In preparation for this world cup, Jamaica’s women’s national team has created a GoFundMe page just to cover expenses.
Other aspects of women’s soccer have struggled to meet minimum standards as well. After FIFA hosted the 2022 Men’s World Cup in Qatar, a country where women aren’t treated equally to men, there was a little backlash. When FIFA tried to make Saudi Arabia Tourism a sponsor of the 2023 World Cup, there was a LOT of backlash, and FIFA eventually had to back off. In a similar vein of racist and sexist policy, 2022 saw the French Football Federation ban hijabs for soccer players at all levels as part of a law intended to keep religion out of public spaces.
FIFA confirmed recently that players will not be allowed to wear rainbow armbands in support of LGBTQIA+ equality. The federation has approved 8 possible wristbands that support various causes, but none that explicitly support LGBTQIA people. In a sport that includes more lesbians than you can count and boasts the first transgender olympic gold-medal winner (Quinn, from team Canada), this is causing a massive controversy.
Despite the issues, FIFA maintains that they are making strides. In 2022 FIFA published the paper “Setting the Pace”, a report intended to benchmark the progress of women’s soccer globally. TV viewership, in-person attendance, and merchandise sales are up across the board. FIFA has also more than tripled the prize money available for the 2023 World Cup, although the men’s tournament was awarded four times as much. The president of FIFA has indicated that he would like to see an equal payout for the women as soon as 2027, but right now that is just an empty promise.
In the opener of this World Cup, ticket sales proved that FIFA grossly underestimated the popularity of tickets, and games sold out in the first 24 hours of ticket sales. In response, FIFA moved the opening Australian game to a bigger stadium and has released additional tickets, which have now sold out for the second time. Again and again, fans and athletes alike prove that all over the world, people like women’s soccer.

Spain players arrive at hotel ahead of training camp despite boycott | The BIG names in sport
Spain players arrive at hotel ahead of training camp despite boycott | The BIG names in sport
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ubhiutDd2X0
Spain women's soccer coach Montse Tome and some of her squad have arrived at a hotel in Madrid on Tuesday, fueling confusion over whether the World Cup-winning team will end their boycott.
Tome refused to answer questions from journalists as she arrived at the hotel ahead of a training camp, as did player Misa Rodriguez.
Squad member Athenea del Castillo said: "Everything I had to say I said in my statement. I said I would be here."
On Monday, the players said they were caught by surprise by the call-up from the new coach after they had made clear their decision not to play for the national team until their demands for change at the Spanish soccer federation were met.
Tomé selected nearly half of the 39 players who had signed a statement refusing to play for the national team — including 15 World Cup-winners — after former federation president Luis Rubiales refused to resign for kissing player Jenni Hermoso on the lips at the World Cup awards ceremony in Sydney last month.
Rubiales eventually stepped down and coach Jorge Vilda was fired, but the players said their demands for deep reforms and new leadership had not been met yet.
Tome said she decided not to call up Hermoso “to protect her” after the player was caught in the middle of the controversy that led to an institutional crisis and brought embarrassment to Spanish soccer.
The new coach, who was an assistant to Vilda at the World Cup, did not say whether it was Hermoso who asked not to be called up.
In the players' new statement on Monday, they said the federation can't force them to join up with the team and said the call-up was not made in accordance with current FIFA regulations.
They would have to report to training camp on Tuesday morning in Madrid, though some are abroad and would not be able to make it in time.
According to Spanish sports law, athletes are required to answer the call of its national teams unless there are circumstances that impede them from playing, such as an injury.
“As professional athletes, after everything that happened today, we will study the possible legal consequences to which the federation exposed us to by including us in a list in which we had asked not to be in because of the reasons that we already publicly explained," the players said. "We regret once again that our federation has put us in a situation in which we never wanted to be in.”
Tome had been originally scheduled to announce her squad on Friday, but the federation postponed her news conference 20 minutes before it was supposed to happen because of the boycott.
Monday’s squad announcement came after the federation released a statement in which it publicly reiterated to the players its commitment to structural changes in the institution.

CHICAGO (August 31, 2023) – Julie Ertz, one of the greatest competitors in U.S. Women’s National Team history and one of a select group of players to win FIFA World Cups at the youth and senior levels, has officially announced her retirement from professional soccer.
Ertz played a major part in helping the USA win back-to-back FIFA Women’s World Cups, bursting onto the international scene in 2015 in Canada as a center back and then as one of the best defensive midfielders in the world in 2019 in France. She was off the field for 18 months following the Olympics in 2021 due to injuries and the birth of her son but made a comeback to play in the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup. She was stellar in New Zealand and Australia, playing every minute of all four matches while marshaling a U.S. defense that allowed just two shots on goal over the four games.
Ertz is a two-time U.S. Soccer Female Player of the Year (2017 and 2019) and is one of just five players to win both the U.S. Soccer Young Female Player of the Year (which she won in 2012) and the senior team award. She is the only player to win the U.S. Soccer Young Female Player of the Year and then win the U.S. Soccer Female Player of the Year twice.
“As an athlete you’re always singularly focused on the next goal, the next tournament and rarely do you get time to reflect on your career,” said Ertz. “However, over the past couple of months my heart has been filled with gratitude as I’ve thought about the amazing experiences soccer has given me. I’ve been blessed to meet and train with some of the best and most inspirational women I’ve ever been around, and I’ve experienced different cultures while traveling the world to compete at the highest level. I gave everything I had to the sport that I love. With that I can walk away with no regrets because while I gave soccer every ounce of myself, soccer gave me even more, and for that I’ll always be thankful.”
A two-time Olympian, Ertz came back from a serious knee injury to play in the delayed 2020 Olympics in Japan, gutting out a performance that saw her start five of the six games and play the second-most minutes on the team while helping the USA capture bronze.
Ertz took some time off the field after the Olympics, and then announced her pregnancy in April of 2022. She gave birth to her son, Madden, on Aug. 11, 2022.
Ertz, 31, debuted for the USWNT in 2013 and her U.S. National Team career spanned 10 years. In her 122 caps, the USA had a record of 100W-17D-5L. Ertz played in 17 World Cup matches, all of which were starts, in which the USA amassed 13 wins and four draws while keeping 11 clean sheets.
In 2012, as a center back, she captained the USA to the title at the FIFA Under-20 Women’s World Cup in Japan and was awarded the bronze ball as the third best player in the tournament, a rare tribute for a defensive player. Her performance helped her earn the U.S. Soccer Young Female Player of the Year accolade.
Over her career, Ertz developed into a fan favorite with her dynamic style of play which featured crunching tackles, a dominant aerial presence and an impressive 20 goals – many off set plays -- while playing in the back or at defensive midfield. Ertz’s 20 goals came against 15 different opponents: three against New Zealand, two against Korea Republic, Brazil and Colombia, and one each against France, Republic of Ireland, Haiti, Canada, Jamaica, Chile, Mexico, Costa Rica, Spain, Denmark, Japan.
A defender during her first four years on the U.S. National Team, she came off the bench against Brazil in the 2017 Tournament of Nations to play defensive midfielder – a position she played all season for her pro club and in the past in college and for the U.S. Youth National Teams – and scored the dramatic game-winner in the 89th minute of a 4-3 comeback victory. From there, she started the final seven games of the year at defensive mid, scoring five more goals, and played all but 67 minutes over those games. Her six goals almost equaled her total (8) from her first four years on the WNT and she played so well and was so dominant that she was named the 2017 U.S. Soccer Female Player of the Year.
In the first match of the 2020 SheBelieves Cup against England on March 5, she became the 40th U.S. Women’s National Team player to hit 100 caps.
At the club level, Ertz played the majority of her professional club career for the Chicago Red Stars, spanning almost 100 games from 2014-2021. The Red Stars selected her with the 3rd overall pick in the 2014 NWSL Draft. She would go on to be named the 2014 NWSL Rookie of the Year. She returned to the NWSL in 2023 with Angel City FC and played in seven matches before the World Cup, all starts, while scoring one goal. She will not return to Angel City for the remainder of the NWSL season.
Julie Beth Johnston was born in Phoenix, Arizona and grew up in Mesa, where she excelled as a youth player with Sereno SC, with whom she won nine state titles. She first became part of the U.S. National Teams program at the Under-14 level. She earned a scholarship to Santa Clara University, where she was a First-Team All-American and the West Coast Conference Player of the Year as a senior. She was also the WWC Freshman of the Year during her rookie campaign. She earned her first senior team cap in 2013 against Scotland and scored her first senior team goal at the Algarve Cup in Portugal in 2015 vs. France.
In 2017, she married NFL tight end Zach Ertz, who is currently with the Arizona Cardinals and was a Super Bowl champion with the Philadelphia Eagles, catching the game-winning touchdown pass in Super Bowl LII.
In 2018, she and Zach started the Ertz Family Foundation with a mission of empowering others by sharing faith, learning through sports and advancing education to build supportive communities, with the goals of transforming lives through faith, hope and love. Her work with the Foundation continues.

Messi and Mbappe Finally Play Together After the 2022 World Cup
The Rennes vs Paris Saint Germain (PSG) match is a moment to look forward to because Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappe and Neymar can finally work together on the field again.
Mbappe and Messi had different moments when they returned to PSG. Mbappe immediately returned to Les Parisiens after the World Cup was over. Meanwhile, Messi is still getting additional holidays after leading Argentina to win the 2022 World Cup.
When Messi finished his vacation and returned to Paris, it was PSG’s turn to give Mbappe a day off. Mbappe was given time off because he has not had time to rest after the 2022 World Cup.
Because Messi and Mbappe are the two main figures in the 2022 World Cup final. Both of them competed hard in the final.
Messi was able to score two goals in the final match and also netted a goal in the penalty shootout to bring Argentina to the championship. Meanwhile, Mbappe also received a lot of praise even though France lost in the final because he scored a hat trick in that match.
Neymar has also played with Messi in the previous match when PSG vs Angers. But for the certainty that the trio will go down together, all of that is still waiting for Christophe Galtier’s decision.
Neymar suffered an injury at the 2022 World Cup and Galtier had stated that he wanted Neymar to focus on recovering from the injury first.
Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe Named Candidates for Best FIFA Award

Zurich, Switzerland – World soccer’s governing body (FIFA), announced on Thursday, January 12, 2023, that Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe are among the nominees for the 2002 FIFA best player award after their stellar performances at the World Cup.
Messi, who has won the award before, led Argentina to the 2022 World Cup title in Qatar. This victory greatly increased his chances of winning an eighth Ballon d’Or.
Apart from Mbappe who scored a hat-trick in the World Cup final, two other Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) club players were also included in the nomination, namely Neymar from Brazil and Achraf Hakimi from Morocco.
France international Karim Benzema, who won the Ballon d’Or last year for his performances for Real Madrid, is also nominated. Likewise Poland’s Robert Lewandowski, winner of the FIFA award in the last two years.
The nomination list includes a number of other top footballers, such as Julian Alvarez from Manchester City, Kevin De Bruyne and Erling Haaland; Real Madrid pair Luka Modric and Vinicius Junior; Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Jude Bellingham.
Alexia Putellas was nominated for the women’s athlete award despite being sidelined for the last six months due to injury.
The Barcelona and Spain midfielder won the award last year and defended the Ballon d’Or in October 2022.
Public voting, which is open until February 3, 2023, will determine the three finalists in each category.
The winner is then selected by a jury consisting of national team coaches and captains as well as journalists and fans.

Messi, Mbappe and Neymar Will Rejoin After the World Cup
Paris Saint-Germain (PSG)’s trip to Rennes on Sunday, January 15, 2023, will be the first time for their superstar front three Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappe and Neymar to play together since the World Cup clash.
Mbappe returned to training on Thursday after being given 10 days off after returning from Qatar and starting PSG’s first two games after the tournament.
He flew to New York for the break and was nowhere to be seen when Messi returned, and scored, in a 2-0 win for the Ligue 1 leaders against Angers on Wednesday, January 11, 2023.
The World Cup was an obvious motivating factor in the trio’s outstanding form during the early months of the season, and how they play together will be crucial in determining how the rest of the season goes for PSG.
They were six points clear of Lens before finishing the first half of the season at Rennes, but the Champions League is their main objective.
After failing to lead the group, Christophe Galtier’s side will face Bayern Munich in the last 16, with the first leg taking place at their home ground on 14 February 2023.

Galtier described Messi, who is 35, as “relaxed and in very good physical shape” after his first match since leading Argentina to a penalty shoot-out win over France in the 2022 World Cup final.
The question now is how much motivation the former Barcelona star has after that career-defining win.
PSG want to extend his contract in the French capital for a third season and Messi’s biggest goal now is to win the Champions League for the first time since 2015.
Spurred on by defeat in the World Cup final despite scoring a hat-trick, 2018 world champion Mbappe will be desperate to get his hands on the Champions League trophy for the first time.

Great interview!
https://www.fifa.com/tournaments/womens/womensworldcup/australia-new-zealand2023/news/kerr-the-world-cup-buzz-is-already-starting
‘Beyond Greatness’ is the slogan of the FIFA Women’s World Cup Australia & New Zealand 2023™ and, for Sam Kerr, it could prove prophetic.
Scoring more goals than any Australian in history and gathering golden boots across the world has long since secured, and cemented, the striker’s status as a national icon.
Yet that World Cup, which kicks off in just 500 days’ time, offers the genuine, tantalising opportunity to trade greatness for immortality.
Kerr, who turns 29 in September, recently finished runner-up in the voting for The Best FIFA Women’s Player and, incredibly, claimed six top-scorer awards across three separate leagues – in three different continents – between 2017 and 2021. She’s also well on course to add a seventh golden boot to that collection in 2022.
But for the defenders in whom the Chelsea and Matildas star already inspires fear and dread, there is bad news. Kerr, it seems, is just getting started.
“There’s definitely more to come from me,” she told FIFA. “Everyone’s trying to say 28 is the peak but people like Megan Rapinoe won [The Best] years after that, as did Carli Lloyd, and I know I still have more to give.
“I’m really excited about where I’m going in my career, where my national team is going and where my club is going. I feel I’m only just starting to play my best football, and doing it at a consistent level. Hopefully people believe I have more to give – because I definitely do.”
Raising her sky-high standards yet further would, given Kerr’s second-place ranking in The Best, all but assure her of edging up that particular podium. But even for a born winner who has become accustomed to finishing first, this was one runner-up prize in which she was able to take genuine pride.
“Some might have seen it as a loss,” she said, “but I felt really honoured to be voted second best in the world, and proud of how far I’ve come in my career. I don’t play for those type of awards – I play for my team and I play to win trophies. But it’s nice to be recognised and I’m not afraid to admit that I was really proud. I also think Alexia [Putellas] thoroughly deserved it, so there’s definitely no shame in coming second to her.”
Barcelona’s brilliant playmaker wasn’t the only award-winner for whom Kerr had nothing but praise. She also identified the winning blend that has enabled the empathetic but fiercely demanding Emma Hayes – her Chelsea manager and The Best FIFA Women’s Coach – to take her game to another level.
She said: “Emma’s an amazing coach but also an amazing person – someone who takes care of us on and off the pitch. She cares a lot about us as people, which I think allows us to perform to our best. She’s tough though, and definitely gets after you if you’re not doing what you should be doing!
“But part of the reason for joining Chelsea was that I knew Emma would challenge me, the club would challenge me, the league would challenge me, and it’s only bettered my game. I’ve had to adapt and I’ve definitely got stronger for it.”
There have been disappointments along the way too, such as Chelsea’s humbling UEFA Champions League final loss to Barcelona and Australia’s shock quarter-final defeat to Korea Republic at the recent AFC Women’s Asian Cup. But even that early exit couldn’t prevent Kerr finishing as the tournament’s top markswoman, and she also left India as her country’s highest scorer of either gender, having surpassed Tim Cahill’s erstwhile record of 50 international goals.
“Me and Timmy have a lot of mutual respect,” said Kerr, reflecting on that latest record. “He’s an idol of mine, so to break his record – and even be in the same sentence as him – I have to pinch myself. But although I enjoyed getting to that record, I’m actually glad it’s done now so I can finally stop talking about it!”
If there is one subject Kerr will never tire of, it’s next year’s FIFA Women’s World Cup. If anything, in fact, her excitement grows with every passing milestone and the steady ticking off of the days until 20 July 2023.
“I’m so proud that Australia is in a position where we’re able to host a World Cup,” she said, beaming. “We deserve it and I think we’re going to show to the world what an amazing country we have, and what a sporting country we have. “I’m just so excited. I can’t even imagine what it’s going to be like and now, just over a year out, the buzz is already starting. We can’t wait to welcome everyone to Australia.”
There is also a firm conviction that, on and off the field, impressive new standards will be set in this historic 32-team showpiece.
“Every World Cup improves [on the one before] in the quality on the pitch, the advertising and marketing off the field and in the profile of the players,” she said. “When I went to my first World Cup, I had to explain to people what we were doing there. Now everyone’s excited for it, the girls are getting more and more recognized, and it’s becoming a very important part of the calendar.
“2023 is going to be amazing. I think it’s going to be the best World Cup, not just because Australia is hosting it, but because the quality in women’s football has improved dramatically in the last four years.”
The trajectory of the competition, and of the women’s game as a whole, merely reflects that of Kerr herself. As she continues to rise, setting new benchmarks and smashing existing records, who would dare bet against this Aussie icon moving ‘Beyond Greatness’ when her nation welcomes the world?
