considering avdol's track record of being un-fucking-locatable to dio until he starts palling around with the Joestar Bloodline GPSes, and also being really extremely immensely casual about having faked his own death, do you think any of the tarot save. cameo, were even remotely surprised that he was back. like i think dio went "avdol.................... he is........ Returned" and hol horse went "yeah yup he does that :')"

okay yeah new names for holy places! sorry this is a little late lmao
Mark Heathcliff → Mark Roberts
Cesar Torres → Cesar Lopez
Thatcher Davis → Abraham 'Abe' Harold
Ruth Weaver → Leila Rajesh
Sarah Heathcliff → Lisa Roberts
alternate → changeling
Six → Erebos
Father O'Brien → Father Luke Murphy
also, I haven't mentioned it here before but I've had this in my drafts for months now-- they eventually name the changeling they're stuck with! its name is Janus, and it is a massive clown :)
some names here are planned to appear in later parts of the story, so you haven't seen them around yet. but they'll be relevant, eventually. :)
Holy Places is set in the town of Laurel Woods in Ohio, located on the edge of Wayne National Forest. I'm kinda moving away from analog technology being a primary facet of the changelings. they can still manipulate tech like TVs and GPSes, but, ah, I'll say that they feel a deeper connection to the forest surrounding Laurel Woods more than anything. the tech fuckery is just a bonus, used to deceive and lure their victims closer to the forest. closer to them.

The cold bastard locked eyes with Ashton.

Summary: Maybe Calum is just weak for the word adventure, but suddenly he can't bring himself to be worried about it anymore. It's not like he's alone without any connection to the outside world. There are phones, maps, GPSes; whenever they turn around, they'll find their way back.
And Michael is here. Michael is at the wheel, an exhilarated grin on his lips, looking like he belongs here, with the lanes and the lampposts and the loud music.
So what if I'm a monster, that's been here all along (ao3) - lifeinecstasy ot4 T, 2k

You Were a Window to a World (ao3) - reversecow michael/luke N/R, 11k
Summary: Luke’s flight from Edinburgh to London gets cancelled, and with it, his hopes of meeting his family for Christmas. He’s ready to go back to his student housing for a lonely holiday when a stranger saves the day. Unfortunately, due to the snowstorm, it takes much longer than expected to get where they need to go. Hours alone in the car and a night in a bed and breakfast leaves Luke with one burning question in the back of his mind; Why is Michael alone for Christmas?

I've been reading a lot of books about physics, and there's this essay that gets mentioned a lot, by the Nobel Prize winner Eugene Wigner: "The Unreasonable Effectiveness of Mathematics in the Natural Sciences." It's about how often physicists come up with a mathematical model of something, and then that maths leads to new discoveries.
And it is weird, how often that happens?
"We've worked out why ovens glow when they're hot, but it kind of implies that energy can only be gained or lost in discrete units? eg you can gain 1 energy or 2 energy, but not 1.5 energy?" Yep, that's quantum mechanics!
"We have an equation that describes how light works! Except to get the equation to work, we needed to make it a wave equation." That's 'cause light turned out to be a wave! (And a particle.)
"Also our equations for magnetism implies that everyone agrees on the speed of light, which is just not how speeds should work?" Turns out Newton was wrong, and that weird 'everyone agrees on the speed of light' is relativity!
I'm so used to sciences were models are off enough from reality that a lot of the time you have to ignore when they imply weird shit, meanwhile in physics the weird shit is how GPSes work?

Wrong tool for the job
I feel like GPSes as we have them today are focused on solving the wrong problem.
Now, let’s be clear: GPS was created as an aid for the military. Its purpose is specifically to find your exact location on a map. This is crucial for military in a number of ways. I recall a guy I knew serving in Afghanistan saying how an awful lot of his time was spent humping a radio rig all over the landscape and periodically calling in their current coordinates. It’s a thing. Plus of course we use them for missiles and planes. Anything past that is gravy.
But the modern GPS as most civilians interact with it is something else. We put in a destination and it guides us. Which is cool and all, and way better than what we used to do (get lost a lot). But the GPS tries to replace the map when what we really need is to replace the navigator.
See, frequently the GPS will tell me to take wildly stressful and even unsafe routes - unprotected left turns, changing three lanes on the highway in the space of a mile, complicated maneuvers which ostensibly save 30 seconds compared to simply going straight for another block and turning at a light, that sort of thing. The GPS is selecting the route. And not always doing a very good job.
But it’s not a great hardship to look at a map beforehand and select a route. It’s often for the best, because you can bring your own local knowledge and personal preferences. What we - or at least I - really need is something which can keep track of where we are on the planned route, warn of upcoming turns, and recover if I make a wrong turn. I don’t so much need something to select my route, I need a tool which handles navigation so I can focus on diving.

The school year is off to a fast start. This may be one of my hardest years. I am teaching freshman for the first time since I began my educator journey!
The freshman aren’t making it hard it’s the transition from one principal to the next. Mrs Eska was cool! I think Mr. Hernandez is cool as well.
I’ve never worked under a male as the top of the chain for employment. This should be interesting. I look forward to watching my freshman change.
I’ll more than likely stop teaching in the school system the year that they graduate.

would you like to consider lightning x storm x francessco
As a pairing? I don't do a lot of shipping, but I think what would be most interesting about their relationship dynamic in general is how different Lightning vs. Francesco and Lightning vs. Storm played. Lightning was game to exchange barbs with Francesco in ways he was not with Storm--which is interesting, because if we're talking about raw speed, Francesco of course has them both beat. But Lightning saw him as rival rather than... whatever Storm was.
At the same time, as cool and collected as Storm as able to be when talking to Lightning, he does not actually seem very good at legitimately rival banter. He can spit some sick diss tracks, but he can't actually rap battle, if that makes sense. We see this with Storm and Cruz at the end of Cars 3--he likes to say his piece and have that be that, not be met with rejoinders about GPSes and "slow traffic ahead."
Honestly, even though he'd never admit it (and probably isn't entirely even aware that this is the case, or why) Storm's probably a little jealous of the way Lightning and Francesco can volley insults and wisecracks with each other. What's the deal with them?? And why does he want it

Letting a shaky idiot attempt to put on glass protections on a phone...turned out surprisingly good. I managed to get a cracked screen a protection glass, with minimal bubbles, which is a bitch to do. I'm not even support, but when my actual support coworker is stuck with another customer, well...time to put on a glass! Might do those more on my own from now on, if we're not having a queue.
Also, what the fuck is different between GPSes. I have no clues what's different between them, I'm a phone seller, I know fuck all about car shit. I could recommend you laptops, sure, but a GPS?? Sir I don't even have a licence. What do you want from me??

With all of its features, a motorbike GPS installation can significantly improve your journey. Yet, these characteristics also contribute to the high cost of these gadgets. Understanding why motorbike GPS are so expensive is typical given the significant price gap between them and automobile GPSes. Some of the explanations for the high price were given in this article.

The future!
I've been looking into some old parts of the internet, roughly-late 2000's and it reminds me of just how recent the future was. I feel lucky to have been born when I did to sort-of ride the coattails of these things without really needing to worry in my earlier years of life, I could enjoy the TV going from a whacking big CRT down to a brand new flat-screen without it coming from my pocket!
2007 saw the release of the first iPhone - and nobody was quite prepared for what it was going to do, or how the world would change so drastically in even just 5 years. Internet forums (oh how I miss you) were still kicking around and Facebook was still just a fledgling, nowhere near the internet powerhouse it was a few years ago.
My focus recently has been on the iPhone particularly, I've gotten slightly distracted from what my original goal was - finding ancient memes - because it's just fascinating. I was there, all that time ago, but I can look at it from the eyes of someone in the future - a future unthinkable.
I've found lots of articles some of them critical, and some of them extremely positive. Amazingly, they're both still around to this day, these pages load fine, having sat there narrowly avoiding bit-rot on some old server that likely both parties have forgotten about (more-so with the New York Times, blogspot is a host service).
Both of these articles are spaced just days apart, one of them before the release of the titular device that reinvented mobile communication, and one after.
The main critique 'David S. Platt' has for the iPhone is a lack of reasoning for its' use. He critiques the touchscreen particularly, much in lieu of calling it a fad.
Third, users will detest the touch screen interface due to its lack of tactile feedback. Using a thumb keyboard, as on the very popular Treo phone, allows the user to feel the keys and know subconsciously that he’s about to press this one and not the one next to it. A touch screen doesn’t allow that, so the user will have to be looking at the keyboard at all times while using it. - David S. Platt
Well, he seemed to ignore the wants of users there - which even comments on the post of the time point out, users don't *care* that it's unnecessary. It feels and looks cool, so it changed the world and now we all find the idea of a physical keyboard unthinkable. NYT puts a more positive assertion forth;
You scroll with a fingertip — much faster than scroll bars. You can double-tap to enlarge a block of text for reading, [...] Finally, you can enlarge a Web page — or an e-mail message, or a photo — by spreading your thumb and forefinger on the glass. The image grows as though it’s on a sheet of latex.
Actions that we take for granted today, but really were the brand new thing just years ago.
It created a divide when it released (although I don't have many examples, bit-rot is ever consuming) and yet it still changed the world, for better, or for worse. It's fascinating to look back, to see the world so alien to us, and yet it's within my lifetime. I wonder if the invention of the Telephone in general was akin to this, or perhaps the introduction of Internet? Maybe the invention of televisions, whatever, I was only here for this one.
This is even before the introduction of GPS to it (and keep in mind, the iPhone didn't even have 3G support because America lagged behind Europe) - And yet it was still showing the futuristic land of an interactive map in your pocket.
The Google Maps module lets you view street maps or aerial photos for any address. It can provide driving directions, too. It’s not real G.P.S. — the iPhone doesn’t actually know where you are — so you tap the screen when you’re ready for the next driving instruction.
Of-course we'd had GPSes, but not quite interactive pocket maps. Now our nightmare bricks always have GPSes, and sometimes, we can't even disable them.
The iPhone is also an iPod. When in its U.S.B. charging cradle, the iPhone slurps in music, videos and photos from your Mac or Windows PC. Photos, movies and even YouTube videos look spectacular on the bright 3.5-inch very-high-resolution screen.
The NYT praise the 'high'-resolution screen, and it's true, for the time 480x320 pixels in 3.5 inches was crazy. Now my phone's 6.1 inches, with 1080x2244 pixels - which is more than even my Desktop computer. It's maddening stuff, this singularity.
I don't have much to say here, I'm just sort-of rambling and gushing over the past, I mean simple concepts we take for granted being first introduced here. This stuff is my Jam, and I'm thankful to set a story in a mock-2008, so I have an excuse to look all this stuff up!

The Great Wide Open
You know, I wish that GPSes would, when you gave them your destination, pull up a map and let you pick the route.
Because, on the one hand, I legit need the GPS. If I give it a valid address it can find that address. It can find a route in a tangle of streets which looks like someone threw spaghetti on a piece of paper and said “Yep, looks good, let’s build that”. If I miss a turn or there’s an accident or whatever, the GPS can find a new route. And that’s great; gods know I’ve spent an egregious amount of time being lost before GPSes were a thing.
But on the other hand, the GPS doesn’t have the judgement to know I always loop around so I’m making a right turn onto the main street when leaving my house. It doesn’t realize that no, you NEVER drive down M Street, and you avoid driving on 395 unless you positively can’t help it. It will try to have you take an unprotected left turn because - according to the algorithm - that will save you 90 seconds.
So I’d like to keep the real-time value of the GPS, but be able to apply a human’s judgement to it. I don’t want a black box which spits out directions, I want something that acts like the navigator in the passenger seat, aiding in navigation so I can focus on driving.
