I built Gundam Lfrith Ur. I actually really like this one, the angular, blocky plating and the soft blue really reminds me of the Balam mechs from Armored Core 6. Also the minigun and the giant laser cannon on the back are just really cool. This one ranks high for me.

HG Gundam Lfrith Ur & Thorn
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I don't typically like bulky and angular suit designs, but I have a soft spot for the Ur, especially the gatling gun and the teal color scheme (which DOES NOT match up with the lineart). As for the Thorn? Well I think this thing is pretty damn ugly, and yet I found myself growing more and more fond of this awkward looking thing as I was building it.
Score two for the Witches From Earth.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Both builds feel incredibly solid, with the only point of concern being the Thorn's ankles feeling like they would fall apart easily. My biggest gripe for both kits was that the main color pieces all seemed to have unnecessarily thick connections to the runner and thus needed lots of sanding, especially on the Phased Array Cannons.
(Speaking of the Phased Array Cannons, did you know these things are primarily weapons and not just a function for a higher Permet Score or as Gundvolva control devices? A shame we never see them used that way.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I always felt these two were meant to combine in some sort of way to make a super Gundam. While that never came to pass, there was a piece of art in one of the latest art books of a prototype/concept Thorn that combined aspects of both Gundams + Gundvolvas that looks similar to what I had in mind. If this never gets an official kit, I may try and bash all three together someday to make it.

So I’d like to ramble a bit on a few interesting background details I’ve been noticing in Witch From Mercury, and just why exactly Aerial seems so damn OP compared even to other Gundams.
Consider for a moment what we’ve see of non-Aerial Gundams we’ve seen in the series proper so far; the Pharact Gundam, and the Lfrith Ur and Thorn. Now let’s compare these units with the Gundams we saw in the Prologue, specifically the two Lfrith Test-type units. When you get down to it, there really isn’t much underlying difference between them, is there? Sure, the Pharact and the modern Lfrith units may have newer and flashier armor and weapons, but they’re clearly running on the same GUND-Format system seen in the Test units back in the Prologue. Right down to seeing Elan 4, Sophia and Norea use the Permet score system the same way that Nadim and Wendy used it.
I think we can look at the Lfrith Test models seen in the prologue as representing a ‘First Generation’ of Gundams. The first functional ‘proof of concept’ for the GUND-Format system. A brand new piece of technology that functions on a basic level but still has major problems to be solved before it can be considered actually feasible. With that in mind, for as cool and flashy as the Pharact and modern Lfrith units might be, they really represent little more than incremental refinements to what Vanadis and Ochs Earth created twenty years prior. Heck, it’s almost certain at this point that the Lfrith Thorn and Ur actually ARE the original Lfrith test-units, having been recovered after the purge of Vanadis and given extensive retrofits and upgrades. Yet at the end of the day, neither Peil Tech or the Benerit group as a whole has managed to actually advance Gundam technology beyond what Vanadis developed.
Tumblr media
Now let’s look at the other Gundam seen back in the Prologue; the main Lfrith Gundam. Because it’s pretty clear this was something entirely different. It’s pretty clear looking back at the Prologue that the Lfrith Gundam was meant to be the true next step in Gundam technology. At the very least, a means of making the GUND-Format system actually safe to use, and based on Cardo Nobo’s vague musings, probably a whole lot else we don’t know about yet.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Basically, if the Lfrith Test-types can be thought of as ‘First Generation’ Gundams, than the main Lfrith Gundam is a Second Generation Gundam. Representing a fundamental growth in the development of Gundam Technology. Just what exactly made Lfrith so different we can only guess at right now, though we can pretty safely assume that Artificial Intelligence was a MAJOR factor. The only problem was that by the time of the Prologue, Vanadis still hadn’t managed to crack the problem of getting Lfrith working.
Tumblr media
At least until Cardo had the bright idea of plugging a small child into it.
Just from what little we see of Lfrith in action during the prologue, she is clearly something very different from even Gundams fielded twenty years later. Lfrith is able to utterly decimate trained mobile suit pilots with only the vaguest and even unknowing commands from Eri and the GUND-Format clearly has absolutely NONE of the previous unit’s harmful effects on Eri, even showing a different colored aura on her face.
Tumblr media
And unlike the Test-units, the Lfrith Gundam managed to get away from that battle. Meaning that only Elnora/Prospera and the resurgent Ochs Earth have had access to the secrets and new developments of the Lfrith Gundam.
Meaning that while the Benerit group has been dinking around with the old, janky First Generation GUND-Format system that will straight up melt its users brain if it’s pushed even a little too far, Ochs Earth has spent the last twenty years research, refining and perfecting their Second Generation Gundam technology.
Tumblr media
Really, is it any wonder that Aerial and Suletta have been able to run circles around and basically CURBSTOMP more or less every opponent they’ve gone up against, including other Gundams?
They effectively have a full tech-generation and twenty years’ worth of development lead over every other Gundam in existence right now. And of course that’s not even touching on what else Aerial might have up her sleeve…

Terrorist orphan #2 constructed.
I disliked this design even more than the Thorn when they were introduced, but after building the kit I can better appreciate the details they put into the bulkier armor that I previously thought looked too much like the Seravee and Cherudim from 00. In particular I really like all the black openings built into the legs, which is really cool to see on a high grade without the need for stickers or paint.

EDM-GA-0XR Gundam Lfrith Rose
I have an aesthetic.
And wouldn’t you know my luck, as I was just about to finish this one, the Lfrith Ur’s pilot died. Quite unfortunate timing on my part. Still, the final product turned out well. Considering it’s a standard MS, and not an SD Gundam, it’s definitely not as lavish as my small troop of similarly colored bots, but I think the colors still work well.
In terms of performance, it has its beam claws, its back mounted Gatling Gun, and its pair of GUND-Bucklers capable of switching between shield and artillery modes. I plan on getting a second Ur so I can mount a second Gatling Gun and third Buckler, but it doesn’t have a ton of weapons in its arsenal. What it does have is a ton of verniers; 21 in total, meaning that even for a bulky bot it has a lot of speed and maneuverability. Simple, but beastly.
Tumblr media
The Details: I only used parts from the Lfriths Ur and Thorn to build this one. I originally thought, with how odd Thorn looked, that they were designed to combine, and when I found out they weren’t I decided to take it upon myself to do so. A lot of my initial plans fell through because their parts are surprisingly incompatible, but I did find a few ways to incorporate the Thorn’s parts into the Ur.
I fused their horns together, as well as affixing the Thorn’s shoulder, knee, and rear verniers onto the Ur’s forearms, thighs, and back skirt. I also attached some of the Thorn’s Permet onto the Ur’s chest to increase the amount exposed. I used the Ur’s included subarm to attach its Gatling Gun to its back, and left the Phased Array Cannons free floating.
As for paint, I used mostly black, having many of the white elements from the two kits be painted gold, as well as the raised details on its shields and gun barrel to give them more visual flare. I lined the edges of each vernier with gold for the same reason. I also painted the cameras, forehead, and Permet pink to give it some additional pop.
Tumblr media
And lastly, with the GUND-Bucklers, I painted the internal arms and outer shells black, and the inner clam shell gold to have all the shields match. I actually used the included stickers for the interior portions of the internal arms, mostly to prevent the need to repaint oversplash a ton, as I can be a little perfectionist about paint at times. (I’m trying to be better about that.)
Overall, it was a decent, somewhat simple custom, and my first non-SD one in a while. I’m one kit away from building my next big custom, so this was good practice. I’m considering painting a few Gundvölva to accompany the Rose as additional practice, but I only have one on order, so I don’t know if I want to get a ton just for the visual of it having G-Bits.
