DISPLACEMENT- Week 2
Tumblr media
Rrrrriiiipppp! The sound of newspaper shredding fills the air at HOLA’s Public Art Residency as three large structures begin to take form. Arriving students are greeted by mountains of newsprint, powertools, stacks of scrap wood, 300 feet of chicken wire, and gallons of glue. Week 2 of Displacement is off to a monumental start!
We begin the day with another inspiring guest speaker, Trinidad Ruiz. He is a visual artist, community organizer, and educator working at the intersection of creativity, community, and tenant activism. Currently, he makes a difference in his positions at we.LA and the Love House. He shared his story of how collective action stopped displacement in his neighborhood.
Soon, the students divide into teams supported by Michael and Alyse. In one corner of the room staple guns punctuate the air as chicken wire and boxes are assembled. A small group of students listen carefully in the back as they learn to operate the saw. On the side, a whiteboard begins to fill as a group debates title ideas. Everywhere, students are mixing glue, water, and newspaper to create larger than life sculptures.
Before our eyes emerge the bones of the structures we choose as a group: a suitcase, a duck, and a tree. Next week, special guest artists will help students bring these pieces to life. Stay tuned for more!

HOME SWEET STREET- Week 5
Tumblr media
Ready, set, paint! Week 5 of HOLA’s public art residency is a burst of sound and color. Alyse Emdur kicks off the final days by singing some tenants rights songs for the group and soon the whole room fills with students’ voices.
“We, we, we shall not be moved
We, we, we shall not be moved
Just like a tree, standing by the water
We shall not be moved
No, no, no nos moverán.
No, no, no nos moverán.
Como un árbol, firme junto al río,
No nos moverán.”
In smaller groups we discuss chants, rhymes, and verses. Which ones speak to the vision of the project? How will we present the work to the public? The students receive some instruction from Michael and Alyse about color before dedicating themselves to painting our ambitious pieces. Some cultivate paper mache lemons and invent their own currency to adorn the lemon tree. Others plant shades of brown, green, and pink onto the trunk. A group by the door becomes a giant pop of yellow as the biggest rubber duck I’ve seen brightens the room. At the suitcases, students engage in a debate about the hierarchy of wealth and decide to show this by painting designer handbags.
Throughout the process chants break out sporadically. As the final minutes tick by, paint continues to fly onto the sculptures. A student sits on the floor, his white socks now splattered with color, intently lettering “Home Sweet Street” on the side of the duck. We are ready. Are you?

The Ideal X- Week 4
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Watersheds, containers, and coded messages kept us busy during Week 4 of The Ideal X! Students focused on creating their individual shipping containers, using a combination of pencils, paints, paper, and glue to tell unique stories. Their designs tackle gender equality, ocean pollution, identity, and more. Although every piece is different, they share common inspiration in the complexity of shipping containers.
After a productive session with our containers, LA Water Keeper joined us for a special presentation and hands-on workshop. We learned about pollution in the Los Angeles watersheds and advocacy efforts like the Creeks to Coast program that protect our water. In groups we built our own mini watersheds out of foil, then polluted them with “oil,” “toxins,” and “feces” (represented by various delicious sauces!) to see how the movement of water affects our environment.
Finally, we came together to answer an important question: what is The Ideal X’s message to the community? Students nominated short phrases that could be translated into maritime flag code on our giant banner. Eventually two front runners emerged: DO SOMETHING and STAY ALIVE. After several heated rounds of voting, we had a winner-STAY ALIVE.
Stay tuned to learn more about The Ideal X’s message of learning to survive, take action, and thrive.
