Autumn in New York, what a time. The summer heat wanes as the sunshine is obscured by clouds, bright beams of light no longer bouncing between skyscrapers. Temperatures are dropping, and it’s putting everyone in a good mood. People in New York City weren’t nice exactly, but there’s a kindness there that comes out a little more as the city that you and Charlie love cools down. Your neighborhood just outside the hustle and bustle of the city is already beginning to decorate for Halloween, though the holiday is still a few weeks away.
Shop windows have those sticky clings in the shapes of ghosts and bats, the lamp posts have black and orange sparkly garland wrapped up the poles, and there were pumpkins on just about every front porch. Some houses went hard with the decorations, and others kept it simple, but your own yard was pitifully void of any holiday cheer. Charlie was determined to fix that today, the two of you waiting outside Henry’s school, eager to surprise the middle schooler with a trip to the pumpkin patch.
Charlie’s got the car running, the both of you leaning against the side that faces the building. When the bells toll and the students come rushing out of the building, it isn’t long before Henry spots his parents and with a great toothy smile, runs towards you with arms wide open.
“Hi!” He wraps those arms in a hug around your waist, squeezing you tight before hugging Charlie in greeting too. “How come you’re both here?”
“Hop in the car and I’ll tell you all about it.” Charlie ruffles Henry’s hair, and the boy happily tosses his backpack into the back seat as he climbs in. He must have had a good day at school, you think with relief.
“Where are we going?” Henry asks as Charlie pulls the car out of the carpool lane and onto the main road, making a beeline for the highway.
“You know how Halloween is right around the corner?” You look over your shoulder from the passenger seat, and try to keep your tone light and aloof so as to not give yourself away entirely, “Well, your father and I thought it was about time we got into the spirit, isn’t that right?”
“We need your help real bad Henry, you’re the only one who can find us the best pumpkins to carve.” Charlie nods, his eyes flicking up to the rearview mirror to gauge his son’s reaction.
“No way!” The kid gasps in delight, his hands fist-bumping the air as he practically shouts with excitement, “How many do we get to take home? I want to get a huge one!”
You and Charlie exchange a soft glance, knowing that if it were up to their son, every available space in the car would be filled to the brim with gourds.
“You can get as many as you’d like -- with the rule that you have to be able to carry them back to the car.” Charlie says sternly, and it’s good that he made the rule and not you, because Henry knows that you’re a little more lenient than his dad is. If Charlie says it, then that’s that.
The ride to the pumpkin patch isn’t very long once they get out of the city. The packed streets give way to few and far in between travelers as you drive further and further upstate. Soon the GPS beeps that the destination has been reached, and Henry has his face pressed to the glass, one of his favorite traditions within reach.
Once Charlie parks the car, Henry is practically bolting out of his seat, racing over to the little stand where there’s a teenage girl happily handing out pamphlets for what is where. Henry grabs a couple and brings them back to the car, brandishing them brightly.
“Oh how darling, honey look,” You say to Charlie as you regard the pamphlet, “There’s a barn and everything.”
“I think there might be some baby cows for us to visit, if you’d like.” Charlie nods, a warm smile on his face as he puts his arm around you.
“Do we get to pet them?” Henry asks with wide eyes, and you nod, making him grow even more excited.
“You have to be gentle though, they’re brand new after all.” You tell him, wanting very much to see the baby cows for yourself.
Charlie leads the way, he’s been here before and you haven’t, so he tells Henry to start picking out his pumpkins while he gives you a tour. The pumpkin patch isn’t so big that you would lose sight of Henry, as long as he didn’t cross the street and go into the fields of corn. Henry’s old enough to know not to do that though, so you and Charlie duck into the little barn where there are three newborn cows in pens, who seem quite interested in eating your jacket sleeve.
“He seems happy.” Charlie says softly, not talking about the cow.
“Good, I hoped so.” You reply, “Are you?”
“Yes, very.” He gives you one of his winning smiles, pulling you away from the pen and into his arms for a brief hug, simply wanting to hold you in the way he sometimes does. “And when we get home we’ll carve them and have the best lookin’ house on the block.”
“You bet.” You loop your arms around his shoulders and lean in for a small peck to his lips, a chaste little smooch.
“And next weekend we’ll go apple picking, and you’ll make that famous cider I’ve heard so much about.” Charlie’s hands start to wander south, those broad palms grabbing at your ass in a way that has you giggling and squirming away from his hold.
“Oh is that so?” You push some of your hair back, raising a challenging eyebrow at your husband.
“Mmhmm,” Charlie chases you out of the barn and manages to catch you ‘round the waist, picking you up and making you laugh out loud, uncaring of the fact that there are a dozen other families at the farm. Charlie kisses all across your neck and cheeks before holding you still and promising hotly in your ear, “And the weekend after that Henry will sleep over at his friend’s house and go trick or treating, and I’ll take you all over the house.”
“Hands to yourself, we’re in public you menace.” Finally able to push him away with a great big grin, you shake your head at him and bite your lips, “Don’t you have a pumpkin to pick?”
Charlie licks across his teeth as he too smiles wide, those dimples of his appearing nice and deep for you. Henry is calling you both from the other side of the pumpkin patch, claiming he’s found the good ones -- which likely mean huge and heavy ones -- and you only give your husband a look.
Taking your hand in his, Charlie doesn’t let go of you as you trek across the muddy dirt patches, the both of you glad you wore hiking boots. And maybe, the car gets completely filled with pumpkins anyway, and maybe, you help Henry carry his extra large pumpkin back to the house, and maybe you all throw seeds at one another in the living room even though you just mopped the floors -- but that’s okay. It’s all part of the charm of Autumn in New York.

I’m sorry you’re sad baby. For some floof, can there be some Halloween stuff where you and Bucky give candy to the cute trick or treaters and it gives the two of you some serious baby fever?
Feel better! Love you!
((this ended up being a little longer than i expected. but oh well))
Ding dong!
You pull away from Bucky immediately when the door bell rings. He chuckles, following behind you as you rush to the door, grabbing the bowl of candy. You swing the door open and you’re greeted to a chorus of “TRICK OR TREAT!”
You gasp, “Oh my goodness! Buck look who showed up at our door!”
Bucky comes up behind your with wide eyes and a big smile, “Holy cow! It’s the Avengers! Hey! Aren’t you supposed to be saving the world instead of trick or treating?”
“We have the night off!” A girl dressed as Black Widow hollered from the back of the group.
You nod in understanding, “Aaahh. Makes sense. Anyway, form a line and I’ll give you your candy!”
One by one, the children stepped in front of you, smiles on their faces, bags open and ready.
“Falcon, good to see ya.”
“Black Widow! Super cool!”
“Iron Man! How’s it going?!”
You gasped when a young girl stepped forward. She had a prosthetic arm decorated to look like Bucky’s gunmetal and gold one, “Oh wow. Hi, honey. Is the Winter Soldier your favorite super hero?”
She shyly nods and you look over your shoulder, giving Bucky a soft, questioning gaze. He nods and you two switch places. He kneels before the little girl and smiles, “Hi, doll. Do you know who I am?”
She gives a nod, avoiding Bucky’s gaze. He chuckles and he gives a polite smile to her mom that’s hold her hand, “What’s your name, honey?”
“Mavis.”
“Hi, Mavis. I’m Bucky. I think it’s super cool that you chose to dress as me this year.” he rolls up the sleeve of his henley to show off his cyberkinetic arm, “We’re the same,” he holds out his hand and she shyly places her prosthetic hand in his. He kisses her knuckles and he glances over his shoulder, eyes shooting to the other bucket with the bigger candy bars in them.
“Mavis, I’m gonna give you a special candy bar, but don’t tell the others okay?”
She giggles when Bucky pulls out a regular sized Hershey’s bar and drops it into her bag, “You better share that with mom, okay?”
“Okay,” she murmurs.
Her mom nudges her and says, “Whaddaya say, Mav?”
Then out of nowhere, Mavis throws her arms around Bucky and whispers, “Thank you,” then goes back to holding her mom’s hand, waving at Bucky as she travels down the driveway and onto the sidewalk.
Bucky gives a sniffle and wipes his eyes. He stands back up, handing you the bowl so you could continue handing out candy to the approaching kids.
A few minutes later, you’re back on the couch, wrapping your arms around Bucky. You kiss his cheek and say, “They’re all so cute. Makes you think about having some, huh?”
“Yeah. Soon, honey. After we’re married.”
“Will you be okay?”
“Yeah,” he peers at you, a teary smile on his face, “I’m perfect.”

IT'S AUGUST!
You guys, we're just a short walk to the "ber" months! If this month zips by like the last couple, we'll be smack dab in September before we know it! I love that. I 'm not wishing my life away, but I sure am wishing this summer away. With Tennessee still at a 30-something percent vaccination rate, we haven't really gone anywhere or done anything. No baseball games, no festivals, no fun. Sure, we're vaccinated but that shot is meant to keep us from severe COVID, hospitalization, and death. I don't want it at all. I've got friends who had it, never ended up in the hospital, but months later are still battling symptoms. No thanks. Soooo, on Saturday night we got real fancy and picked up a sack of Taco Bell and went to the drive-in to see Jungle Cruise. The movie was bad, but the company was excellent and the nachos were delicious. No regrets.
Tumblr media
What can I say? I'm a cheap date. Before I forget- I've had some questions about the refrigerator pickles. Yes, they were a success. When the first jar was ready for the frig I had the mister taste one and critique the flavor. He said there wasn't enough of a vinegar bite. I added an extra tablespoon of vinegar to each jar and after that he deemed them perfect. In fact, he's enjoyed them so much that he's mowed through the whole batch (4 jars). Today I'll be picking and pickling some more. After that I may pull up the cucumber plants. They're starting to look like they've lived a good life. Besides, IT'S AUGUST. We're nearly finished with summer! Can I get an amen? The bell peppers still have plenty of production time, I've had a pretty good crop and there are still lots of baby peppers on the plants. I'll give them a stay of execution for now. I've been at my desk making cards again. No special occasions, just nonsense.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Today I plan to make one for someone special who is battling health issues and maybe a couple of back-to-school cards for teacher friends. It would be kinder just to send them haz-mat suits. That's it, you're all caught up on the fast-paced life we're living - drive-ins, pickles, and paper crafts. In about three weeks we'll mask up and FLY to Baltimore. This will be the first time I've been on a plane since February of 2020. Holy cow! Eighteen months feels like a lifetime. Anyway, we've got a meeting with a builder, we plan to visit a couple more towns that we missed the first time we went exploring, and hopefully, HOPEFULLY make a final decision of some sort - even if it's just agreeing on a spot. We've had zoom meetings with the builder and have been going over floorplans and options - I'm still not convinced it's our wisest choice. I'd love a sparkling new home with hand-picked finishes, but there are a lot of hidden costs. We built this house in 1999 and it was all pretty straight forward and we knew exactly what we were getting for our sale price. This time around everything is an "option". Oh, you want a light above the kitchen island? That's another $800. What's that, you want steps to the front porch? We can do that for $1800. Every extra window is $500 or more, and (surprise!) most rooms only have one. The optional stone fireplace is $7,000. They don't sound like much one at a time, but added together it's a bundle. Buying finishes through the builder is very convenient, but far more costly. The same granite or quartz kitchen counters the builder will install are a thousand dollars more than Lowe's or Home Depot - the very same granite! And you know darn well that the builder is buying them at a contractor's price. The catch is that you must have a countertop in order to close. So if you have them install a basic laminate and choose to replace it with granite of your choosing, then you're paying the new installers extra to remove and haul away the laminate that you didn't want in the first place. Ugh. We've also remembered that we are not HOA people. The neighborhood we are considering is really lovely - it sits on a golf course (we don't golf) and has a community pool, fitness center, etc. Of course, there's a fee for all of that. That fee also includes trash pickup and lawn maintenance. Mickey would never mow again! He likes that. BUT, and for me this is a big but, they control every shrub or tree you might want to plant. No trees with a trunk diameter over 12 inches. They also hit you for $650 every January for maintenance of water and sewer. They're on public sewer and water, so I'm not sure what that covers. Of course, we can always purchase a lot elsewhere and build on that, but odds are that would entail having a well and septic put in and I am not a fan of that at all. The allure of building is that we could control the timeline (pretty much). If we broke ground in September or October could list our house in the spring and make our move. That gives us time to book a moving company and have a schedule that doesn't create panic. Our other options are to keep scouring real estate and jump on a house that meets our needs, list our house, close on our house and the new house in a timely manner, cross our fingers we can hire a reputable moving company on short notice, and drive to Maryland with two cats...or...list our house, close, hire a moving company, drive to Maryland with two cats, put everything in storage, rent a place until we find what we love, then hire movers again to get everything from storage to the new place. I'll be honest, the worst part of both scenarios is the idea of driving with two cats. They may have to be drugged. I'm currently liking this house in Ocean Pines. It's a little wonky-looking, but the interior and the lot are appealing (that dappled shade is perfect for hydrangeas!). I'm crazy about that screened room. https://www.homesnap.com/homes/for_sale/MD/Ocean-Pines/p_(21,21266)/c_38.381705,-75.146285/z_12/m_7,107492455 I've
already decorated it in my mind. It's 5 miles from the beach, the community has 5 pools ( 1 indoor), tennis courts, pickleball courts, walking trails, playgrounds, etc. No hidden fees. Every Saturday there's a farmer's market, and everything we'd need from a good hospital to Home Goods is nearby. The biggest drawback is that it's two hours from the grandgirl. Two hours is much better than our current eleven hours but that's definitely not the easy drop-in we'd hoped for. Arrgh! They'll just have to move. Ha! Alright, I've dumped my brain out on here and I'll leave you to pick through the mess and make sense of it. I have to run out to mail a box, then I'll feed the mister, fold some laundry, and make a couple cards. That's kind of a terrific Tuesday. No complaints from me. Besides, we're now just 89 days from Halloween! The stores have had fake pumpkins out since mid-July, they know the way to my heart. One more reason not to buy a lot outside of a neighborhood- no trick-or-treaters! Can you imagine if this was to be my last official Halloween? Tragedy! Gotta' run. Stay safe. stay well, and be kind to each other. XOXO, Nancy

How Anoka, Minnesota became the Halloween capital of the world

On November 1, 1919, the residents of Anoka, Minnesota, a suburb about 20 miles north of Minneapolis, woke up to what Smithsonian calls a “prank of epic proportions.”
Tumblr media
minipost
Outhouses were overturned, wagons were parked on roofs, and cows roamed through the streets.
Tumblr media
The prank was part of an epidemic of Halloween-related hijinks that seemed to grow more extreme with each passing year. Civic leaders decided that the time had come for the city to do something to dissuade such mischief—or at least to keep would-be pranksters so busy that they couldn’t dream of causing trouble.
Tumblr media
So in 1920 a Halloween committee, fronted by local businessman George Green, planned one of the first—and largest—community-wide Halloween celebrations in the United States. The 1920 celebration, featuring a parade, a bonfire, and free candy for children, and was so successful that the police received no reports of pranks.
Tumblr media
anokahalloween
The celebration only grew in subsequent years, and Anoka leaders wanted people to know it. In 1937, 12-year-old Anoka local Harold Blair was one of 200 Minneapolis Journal newspaper carriers to receive an all-expenses-paid trip to Washington, D.C. Members of the Anoka Commercial Club seized on the opportunity, sending Blair off with a request to Congress that Anoka be formally designated as the “Halloween Capital of the World.” A fire in Anoka destroyed many of the city’s earliest documents about the Halloween celebration, so it’s hard to know whether Congress approved the moniker back in the 1930s. But in 2003, Minnesota state representative Mark Kennedy restated the proclamation, officially cementing Anoka’s title.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“It’s like a pebble being dropped into a pond,” Karen George, a member of the board of directors of Halloween, Inc. (the nonprofit organisation that plans Anoka’s yearly festivities), told Smithsonian in 2019. “It’s really the people of Anoka who want to enjoy this hometown festival, and then they bring along relatives and friends who tell others about it.”
Tumblr media
CBSminnesota
Today, Anoka’s Halloween festivities have expanded to three parades instead of one, and includes other community activities such as a house decorating competition, bell ringing, and a group pumpkin smashing. In 2020, Anoka’s Halloween festival is celebrating its 100-year anniversary. By most accounts, the holiday has become a part of Anoka’s identity.

Day 3 is for... Pumpkin! Some cute, everyday stuff at the agency because they all deserve a break sometimes.
This was very fun to write and I like how it turned out, hopefully you’ll like it too!
Find it on AO3!
The Carving Contest
“-You can set the last ones on this table, Kenji.” Kunikida was gesturing at the blond boy, guiding him to one of the agency’s desks. The teenager let go of his cargo on the table in front of him, careful not to drop anything on the floor. One of the pumpkins rolled to the edge but stopped before falling, almost magically remaining on the table.
Halloween was in just a few days, and the detectives had decided to decorate the agency for the occasion. Fake spider webs were hanging all around, with a giant plushy spider hiding in one of the room’s corners, a few ghosts and bats were swinging from the ceiling, and even a skeleton had been placed at the entrance to greet customers. All that was left now was carving some pumpkins and placing them on windowsills and desks and the agency would be perfectly spooky. Kenji had suggested turning the carving assignment into a contest to see who would carve the best pumpkin, and Fukazawa had agreed; he knew his detectives needed a little break from their work, and as such he had even promised a bag of sweets to whoever could win the challenge, to inspire them further. This only had for effect to give Ranpo maximum motivation, and he probably was now the most excited out of all the detectives, his determination slowly rubbing on all of his coworkers. Rules had been set: each detective would be allowed a maximum of two pumpkins, with three hours to let their genius speak; Haruno and Naomi would be the judges. Now, orange, beige and green vegetables of different sizes were piling on a desk, already hollowed out and waiting to be carved in. All the detectives were at their desks, waiting for the signal to start. Most of them were sporting a resolute look on their face, ready to give their all to win the challenge and the sweets. Even Dazai had a somewhat serious look on his face; he seemed to have been pumped up by the idea of doing some handiwork, or was just in a good mood because Halloween was, after all, a celebration around death.
As Naomi and Haruno announced the beginning of the challenge, all the people around the room almost ran to the pile of pumpkins, trying to get the ones they had set their eyes on before someone else could take them away. They all started to get to work, drawing their designs and preparing their knives and other tools. Some had wondered if leaving Dazai to handle such sharp objects was a good idea, but he didn’t seem to try and attempt anything close to suicide, at least not for now. Of course, he had cracked a joke or two on the matter, but he was now deeply in thoughts, eyes glued to the squashes lying on his desk.
All detectives were busy, trying to finish their artworks in the imparted time. Things had started with a lot of movement and excitement, but now it all had quieted down a bit. They were now about 2 hours in the contest, and not much could be heard anymore, almost everybody being way to absorbed with what they were doing to bother talking or looking around. Almost everybody, because Atsushi was just sitting there, elbow on his desk, cheek pressed on his hand. He didn’t really know what to carve next. He had already done a regular jack-o’-lantern in one of the bigger pumpkins and was now left with a very small squash, and his mind couldn’t come up with a design small enough to grace it in a way that would give him a chance to win the contest. He let his eyes wander around the room: all the other detectives were busy working on their works of art. Ranpo had carved all kinds of candies around his first pumpkin and was now working on the outline of an intricate design mixing up ghosts of all forms, while Yosano was busy carving up some scarily accurate organs on her tall, orange squash. Kyouka had managed to carve in a dog chasing after a couple of cute rabbits and was now carefully trying to slice some spider webs in a small kabocha squash, Kenji had sculpted a cow’s face with its bell and was halfway through the carving of a cute house spirit in a butternut squash. Kunikida had extremely carefully etched some bats above a caldron and had now set himself to the difficult task of representing a vampire’s face on his second cucurbit, and Tanizaki had done a simple jack-o’-lantern as well, which Atsushi thought looked a lot better than his, and was now left with one of the smaller squashes, outlining some cats on it. Even Dazai was done with his first pumpkin and was starting carving through the second one. Atsushi took a better look at his mentor’s first squash. To his surprise, he recognized the design right away. On one side was sliced in the outline and details of a tiger, while the other side was sporting a rather simple portrait, just a weirdly cut mop of hair with the outline of a face, all of which looked extremely familiar.
“-Hum… Dazai? Is it me you caved in your pumpkin?
-Oh, yes, I thought it’d be cute to have a tiny weretiger sitting on my desk.” The taller man hadn’t taken his eyes off his squash, letting his explanation out in the air with a somewhat detached tone, as if this was the most normal thing in the world to say.
However, this wasn’t normal for Atsushi. The younger man’s face flushed at the words, he stuttered a little before falling silent. He was extremely touched by the man’s gesture; he hadn’t expected this at all. He wasn’t used to people being nice to him or even just thinking about him, so having his mentor be inspired by him to decorate his pumpkin in this contest was shaking him up a little. Dazai was focused on his work, seemingly not paying attention to the younger man. In reality, he had been sending side glances his way since the beginning of their carving duty, waiting for the tiger’s reaction to the little him sculpted in the squash. The tall man was not disappointed. He knew Atsushi would get flustered by the gesture, and seeing him all red in the face and unable to speak properly was always a funny and heartwarming sight. He had gotten attached to his junior, and he liked seeing him happy as he knew the poor man hadn’t had an easy life up until now. Pleased with the weretiger’s reaction, Dazai put his attention back to his current work, hands carving up some weird, possibly poisonous mushrooms in his other squash. After some time, Atsushi regained his composure, and with a determined look on his face, he grabbed his pen and drew on his last pumpkin, quickly getting back into the contest before it ended.
“-Time’s up everyone!” Naomi’s voice boomed after a while, the loud ring of an alarm echoing with her words. “Put your tools down, time’s up! Please set your pumpkins at the front of your desks, the judges will now examine them.” She tried to appear as serious as possible, but she couldn’t hide the excitement and playfulness in her voice. All the detectives started getting their pieces of art ready, cleaning up their desks and tools to give their pumpkins all the highlights they deserved. Fukuzawa was standing in a corner of the room, caring gaze set on his fellow detectives, ready to hand out the prize. Naomi and Haruno started walking around the desks, carefully examining their coworkers’ creations. Silence fell around the room, tension rising as the girls did their inspecting. Small hums of approval could be heard from them from time to time. When they reached Atsushi’s desk, they stopped, confused looks on their faces.
“-Hum… Atsushi? What is this?” Haruno pointed at the tiny pumpkin the weretiger had styled last. He had carved some rectangular eyes and a smirking mouth, and had rolled some bandages around the squash, covering a good chuck of it in white fabric. His ears became bright red and he tried covering his face with his hands.
“-I-I-I… I tried to make a Dazai pumpkin…” his voice was shaking a little. He knew he wasn’t the most skilled at drawing or other artsy things, but he thought he had made it obvious that this was his mentor he had represented. Naomi let out a small, amused huff and moved on to Dazai’s table.
After having carefully inspected all the pumpkins, Naomi and Haruno exchanged a glance and without any discussion, Haruno declared:
“-We have a winner! You all did very well, I was very surprised by the creativity you all had, and all of these pumpkins look great. However, only one of you can be number one. I’ll let Naomi announce the result.” All eyes were set on said girl, waiting expectantly.
“-The result is obvious, the winner is… Big brother!” Naomi jumped on her brother to hug him as she screamed his name. All the detectives looked at each other with confused looks, while Tanizaki was trying to get his sister away from him. Haruno went and grabbed her, clearing her throat.
“-I knew this would happen.” She let out a sigh. “I’m sorry Junichirou, but you’re not our winner, I think Naomi just got a little carried away. The real winner actually is… Dazai! Your little Atsushi is so cute, it had to be number one.” As she said this, Fukuzawa approached and gave the detective his prize, a big bag of sweets. Dazai accepted his trophy, a little surprised he had won. Ranpo was eyeing the bag, looking almost devastated. The tall man turned to him.
“-Well, well, looks like I’ll be gorging myself on candies, my dear Ranpo. Maybe I’ll think of you and share some, if you’re nice enough.” He winked at the older detective, mischievous smile on his lips. Ranpo huffed in response, crossing his arms in frustration at Dazai’s playful teasing. Setting the bag of sweets on his desk, Dazai couldn’t help but notice Atsushi’s demeanor. He was sitting again, head down, eyes fixed on the table.
The weretiger still felt a little ashamed. He really thought it would be a good idea to make a Dazai pumpkin, he even thought it’d be funny to have a squash covered in bandages, but apparently no one liked it. Dazai’s Atsushi pumpkin had won the contest, yet no one seemed to care for the one had had done, even if it was in a similar vein. Sad thoughts of that sort were creeping in his mind, and he brought his hands to his face again. Suddenly he felt something on his head. Looking up, he realized Dazai was gently petting his hair, a soft smile on his lips.
“-Don’t worry, Atsushi, it doesn’t really matter if none of the others like it. I like it a lot, this little guy looks like my twin brother.” His eyes were glinting with joy. He knew Atsushi had done his best, and he was immensely moved by what he did. Of course his pumpkin looked a little weird, the eyes weren’t exactly the same size and the cuts were a little wobbly, but Dazai knew the weretiger put his heart in this little piece of art, and that was all that mattered.

God, what a blast from the past. I haven’t written Phineas and Ferb fanfiction in literally almost two years (my username has become more sentiment than anything lol)
Commission for @crazyfanatic97. Halloween-esque, because who doesn’t enjoy Halloween in July?

Vanessa was going to kill her father when he got back.
It wasn’t just that he had left her alone, at this Halloween party that he had insisted on throwing for the whole neighborhood for some reason. It was that he left her alone because he turned into a fucking were-cow, if Perry’s posts on Instagram were to be any kind of clue.
She sighed and set her phone down, checking her hair one more time before grabbing her things and exiting her room. She headed down to the lobby of the building – no evil castle this time, thank god – and observed the guests for a moment from the stairwell before showing herself.
Like before, even though her father had set it up, Vanessa had called Phineas and Ferb to double check party decorations, various lights to make sure they wouldn’t accidentally kill anyone, and the like. They were still hanging around, Phineas in a Luke Skywalker costume and Ferb in a Darth Maul one, weirdly enough. She didn’t understand the choices, but she didn’t really question it either.
They had brought along their friends, who were bounding around in themed costumes helping guests, and Vanessa shook her head and smiled. Always the helpful kids, she supposed. She’d have to thank them for it later.
Stacy and Candace were in the far corner, Stacy dressed as Jasmine from Aladdin and Candace as the human version of Ariel. Ironically, they all kind of matched. She walked over to them first.
“Hey guys,” she called out as she got closer.
When they looked over at her, their jaws fell just a little, and Vanessa couldn’t help but be smug about it. “Girl,” Stacy gasped out. “You look INCREDIBLE! How did you get your hair to look like that?”
“How did we all theme ourselves as Disney princesses without even discussing it first?” Candace wondered.
Vanessa was decked head to toe as Belle from Beauty and the Beast, right down to the golden ball gown that she had hand sewn for months. She wasn’t why she had felt so compelled to make it; someone at school had told her that she had the complexion and the hair for the Disney princess, and after a little bit of researching, she had agreed.
Something about the story of Beauty and the Beast had inspired her too. The way that it implied that anyone could find love, regardless of their background? It was kind of nice to think about, all things considered.
Speaking of...
Vanessa pulled her phone out from the pockets she had stitched into the dress at the last second on a whim. She was glad for that now.
Perry had put up another post on his private Instagram. Her father was somewhere on the south side of town, rampaging through some bushes or something. The image was a very unamused looking secret agent in the foreground, with her father passed out behind him.
Vanessa snorted, hit the like button, and clicked her phone off again, setting it away. She looked up at Stacy and Candace, who were chatting about their homework.
“So did you guys come here with your boyfriends?” Vanessa asked, simultaneously wanting to play good host but also genuinely curious.
They grinned and nodded at the stage, where a group was setting up to play. Jeremy and Coltrane, both dressed as matching princes to their girlfriend’s princess, were up on stage tuning instruments, chatting together and with their other bandmates. “Phineas and Ferb got them to bring the whole band,” Stacy informed her.
Vanessa nodded, a bit impressed. “Nice.”
“So....do you have a date?” Candace asked. Her tone held a teasing lilt to it, and her eyes sparkled in amusement as she nudged Vanessa.
Vanessa wrinkled her nose and ducked her chin. “Not...not really, no.”
“How do you mean?”
Vanessa could feel Stacy looking at her sympathetically; seeing as she knew the whole dilemma with Perry and Monty and Monogram, she wasn’t surprised. She didn’t look at her when she answered. “My...the guy I invited probably won’t be able to come. Our dads don’t like each other a whole lot.”
“Your dad isn’t even here,” Stacy pointed out.
Vanessa rolled her eyes. “Trust me, everyone is grateful for that right now.”
Her phone pinged softly, another alert from Instagram, and she hid a grin. “I’m gonna go check on the other guests for a bit, you guys have fun, okay?”
They chorused an affirmative and Vanessa moved aside, pulling her phone out and glancing at the screen. Another check in, this time from a bit closer to the center of town, in a pumpkin patch about two miles towards the suburbs. Perry didn’t look very amused anymore, just sleepy.
Jeremy and Coltrane started up their music, a quick, rolling number that had people scrambling for the dance floor in all assortment of costumes. Fairies, witches, wolves, vampires, snake people, Greek partyers – there was something for everyone.
Halloween was one of Vanessa’s favorite holidays, which always made people snort upon hearing it. Of course the goth girl would like Halloween, right?
But no, she liked it for what people could dress up as, seeing the creativity that came every year. It wasn’t like Christmas, a false sense of cheer and fake gratitude for gifts you didn’t want or need, not dealing with rude family members at dinner who ruined the festivity.
Halloween was a small enough holiday that it didn’t require family get togethers, but large enough to have a Hallmark section in the store and a massive following online. It was the one time of year where anyone could be what they wanted and no one could judge them for it, only praise them for really cool costumes.
Vanessa supposed she liked that sense of freedom. She wasn’t super girly in her day-to-day life, but on Halloween, she could be Belle, and no one would blink twice except maybe to ask why she hadn’t made her undead...which was definitely a thought for next years costume.
“Didn’t know if I would be able to find you here,” came a soft voice from behind her. “Though with that outfit, you’re pretty much wearing the most amazing costume here.”
Vanessa stiffened and turned slowly to find Monty standing there, a warm smile on his face and a hint of a blush on his cheeks. He was dressed in a modest vampire outfit, so simple that, had he not been wearing a cape and small fangs, Vanessa wouldn’t have noticed, it was more like a suit than anything.
They honestly probably couldn’t have matched better, in a weird, sort of ironic way.
“You came,” she breathed.
Monty shrugged, a boyish grin on his lips. “Of course I did. You sent me an invitation, after all.”
“I didn’t think your dad-”
Monty laced their fingers together, cutting her off, and twirled her gently, his eyes taking in her outfit. “What my dad doesn’t know won’t hurt him. Care to dance?”
“Absolutely.”
They had taken barely two steps when the wall behind them crashed open and her dad, still a fucking cow, bolted through, mooing at passerby. People in the immediate path dove for cover and everyone else clapped and whistled, probably thinking it a stunt.
Vanessa wasn’t about to correct them.
Perry charged through after him, wearing a fake mustache and glasses to hide his identity, and rolled his eyes at her when he saw her. Vanessa bit back a chuckle. “As much as I want to dance, I think maybe we should help Perry,” she laughed, kicking off her heels.
Monty shook his head and removed his fangs. “Couldn’t agree more.”

Telling the Bees by Faith Shearin
Tumblr media
Scurvy
When sailors crossed the oceans  their gums bled and their teeth grew as loose as screen doors
in the wind. They ate old biscuits and salted meats and bruises appeared like stains over
their bodies and then they began unhealing: the arm they broke  as a child when they fell from
a tree unmended and the gash in their knee when they were thrown from a horse reopened. All the old
wounds were new, as if time had undone itself, as if  each injury is permanent,
just waiting to show itself again. It was worse the second time, not having fallen from a tree
or horse, but suffering anyway, in the middle of the ocean, where, for weeks, no land was visible.
***
Hating School
It began sometime after first grade and became an annual affliction; the store windows filled with notebooks and lunch boxes and my daughter was seized by dread. All summer she was happy in her bathing suit, floating in the pool’s chemical blue. She slept as much as she liked and ate ice cream and lived in the towns she built out of sticks and silence. She sat a long time on our front porch sketching her dogs, in profile, and ate her supper thoughtfully, a book opened beside her plate. Then the air grew cooler and a certain sorrow settled over her face. The other children liked  Halloween and the rushing waterfall of hallways and the chance to see their friends. But my daughter dreaded all of it: the bells, the tests, the afternoons when she stood alone on the playground, watching. The trees  began removing their bright costumes and my daughter stood in that narrowing light and unhappiness became a staircase she climbed each morning; it was a room full of desks, the weight of knowing she was different.
***
Predators
Before zoos and pruned neighborhoods, before man chopped down forests and shot beasts, there were predators in the darkness. Once, there were leviathans and cave lions and great lumbering, hungry bears. They didn’t live in cages or on tiny slivers of wilderness, nearly extinct. They decorated our cave paintings and kept us awake beside our islands of fire. We were different when we knew we could be eaten: more humble,  more alert. We feared the man-eaters but we also conjured their spirits, dressed in their skins. Now we have beaten  them back, we are weaker, more defenseless. It is the remains of our own objects that watch us from the woods instead: legless mattresses, shattered televisions with antennae like antlers, displaced toilets white with embarrassment along the banks of our rivers, a refrigerator that could lure a child into its airless emptiness: hungry and hot.
***
The Wife
She has worn so many veils that I cannot find her face. I watched my grandmothers practice her ancient manners; they were bent over her housework, served men first, starched shirts and shone shoes. The wife began as property and she came with  little gifts: a frying pan, a cow, a lace night gown;  she pretends not to remember this. Husbands and in-laws like her to be tidy and quiet, to make a little money but not too much. Children hope she is selfless and kind. Can the wife reinvent herself or is she forever a maker of lunches and cleaner of toilets? Is her name eternally less important? I watched her for years, trying to decide if I could fit myself into her narrow description. I want marriage  to be about love but it is also about history. The wife is a ghostly white shape, a hand, a thing given away. What does a bride wish when she stands in plastic on a cliff made of cake? What does she feel when she walks in a white rice rain?
***
Wedding Dresses
Packed away in attics, wrapped in plastic, pressed into boxes as big as coffins were the wedding dresses of my aunts and grandmothers. They rustled
the way snakes rustle in a pile of leaves. Were they dangerous or angry? A single  day in the world had not been enough. I found them with my cousins,
during games of hide and seek, or while dressing up in other clothes: floppy hats, shoes so tall we could not keep our balance. They had a stillness
around them that reminded me of graveyards: their lace no longer white, as if time had steeped it in tea. They were fitted  and stern or as showy as blossoms
in spring: big skirts, trains that followed a bride like a history. Sometimes my grandmother took one out to show us and, flung across the bed,  I could see the shape of the woman
who wore it, long ago, marching into the unknown. Sometimes we found a veil, wrapped separately, and it dangled like a jellyfish
in our hands. The dresses were as empty as seashells; like unicorns they favored the attention of young girls. They were impractical: not made for dancing
or reaching, meant to be worn once then never again. They seemed both ignorant and wise: snowy owls perched in a closet made of night.

Number 27: Animal Crossing
My memories of the Gamecube are a haze, obscured by the cool weirdness of that goofy box with the handle on it that felt sturdy enough to fight off an attacker with. My game memories are few: Eternal Darkness, Chibi Robo, Pikmin, and Animal Crossing.* Mostly the latter.
Tumblr media
Animal Crossing came around during a transitional period in my life. I’d split with my fiancee, moved back in with my parents for a few months, and was now living with a married friend. The game offered a charming, much-needed escape from reality. It provided it in a way that was unlike other games I’d played.
It's a game about moving to a small town where you don’t know anyone, starting from nothing, and trying to make yourself at home. You get a home loan and a place to live, then spend your time talking to the villagers, foraging for things to sell, and catching bugs and fish to stock the local museum. It’s the first (only?) game I’ve played that is based on real world time, using your system clock. This is kind of a double-edged sword. On one hand, the seasons and time of day change with the real world. Each type of bug and fish would only be available during certain times of day and year. That made the changing of seasons feel like an event.
Tumblr media
The downside is that if you could only play during a specific window each day, it was much harder or impossible to find certain things. There are special holiday events too, and I definitely made it a point to spend some time in Animal Crossing on Christmas and Halloween to get special event decorations and clothes. Also, if you start playing in springtime, you’re not going to experience winter for another 6 months at minimum.
A real-time game clock also means that I couldn’t binge the game for hours at a time. Generally I’d fire up the game, search for the 5 daily dig spots in town, see what was for sale in Tom Nook’s shop, talk to some villagers, and do some fishing. And maybe harvest the fruit trees and sell the fruit. After all that’s been done, there’s not a lot else to do. This is probably a good thing, as I tend to marathon games that have me hooked.
You could have up to 4 villagers living in the same town on the same save file, which was both wonderful and terrible. Wonderful because seeing the changes that someone else is making to your town can be downright hilarious. You can change the town song (a jingle that plays every hour) and you can post things on town bulletin board. More importantly, the villagers always have a catchphrase, and they will sometimes ask the player to think of a new one. I’d go talk to Belle the cow, and be greeted with “Good evening, fuck face!” which is pretty uplifting.
Tumblr media
The downside to this is that once anyone has found and used the 5 dig sites each day, or harvested the fruit trees, or extracted the money from the money rock, it’s gone for everyone who lives in that village. I remember a stretch where it was a competition between my roommate and I to see who could get up and get onto the Gamecube first thing in the morning.
A big part of the game’s charm is in its music; There is a different track for every hour of the day, and it typically will be quiet and peaceful in the small hours, jaunty and energetic as the morning turns to afternoon, winding back down in the evening. I’ve listened to the soundtrack, and some of the music is like taking a bath in a big vat of nostalgia juice, and other tracks don’t register at all; the music that sticks with you depends on the time of day you’d play the game. Which is neat for reasons I can’t quite put into words.
Tumblr media
Animal Crossing was special because it felt like a peaceful, comforting little isolated world that wanted nothing from me. There’s no fail state. You can do tasks for the villagers, stock the museum, decorate your home, and continually renovate your home and take out progressively larger loans. You could do any, all, or none of those things. Wandering around the town and surrounding area at night catching bugs or fishing was a very zen experience, one that hasn’t really been replicated in another series for me.
*Apologies to Wind Waker, I missed it.

Went back to Kaffeehaus today for lunch, which is a Swiss Cafe that opened about a month ago here in Trivandrum… This is the visit after my last post about the place and I found the place to be decorated in the Halloween theme as they have a Halloween fest going on this week…
Kaffeehaus
Kaffeehaus
Kaffeehaus
Kaffeehaus
This time, I chose the Nudelsalat Mit Hühnchen which is a Pasta salad with Chicken… Then for mains decided to try the Raclette, which is a swiss speciality dish with molten cheese and a set of toppings and then for dessert, took whats called Jungfrau which is basically Oatmeal Cookie served with Ice-cream… I also took a glass of their Cold Coffee to drink with all this… 🙂
Nudelsalat Mit Hühnchen
Raclette
Jungfrau
Cold Coffee
So, the first course was the Nudelsalat Mit Hühnchen… Essentially this is a pasta salad consisting of Farfale pasta along with fresh veggies and grilled Chicken served on lettuce and dressed with house dressing of your choice… The choice of dressing included Mayo, Vinaigrette and Yogurt… Considering health quotients, I went for Yogurt this time… The salad was therefore tossed in some Yogurt and topped with some chopped Parsley and included, Cucumber, Tomatoes, Carrots, Bell Peppers, Mushrooms, Pumpkin Seeds (I guess as per the Halloween theme going on), diced Grilled Chicken and some Croutons in it… The salad was indeed seasoned with some salt and pepper… 🙂
Nudelsalat Mit Hühnchen
Nudelsalat Mit Hühnchen
It was indeed a refreshing salad, although to be completely frank, the presence of the Yogurt really made me feel like its a fancy Raita 😀 😛 The Veggies were all clearly freshly cut and clean… The Pasta was cooked perfectly to al dente and the Pumpkin Seeds gave it the essential crunch/nuttiness to the whole salad… Only complaint however is that I found the croutons to be hard to chew and the yogurt was slightly more sour than what I would prefer… Other than that, it was a nice refreshing salad to have as a starter…
Once I was done with the salad, they brought in the Raclette… Its essentially dish thats prepared on the table and so, they first brought in and set up the electric Raclette Stove (what you see at the back in the first pic below)… Then they brought in the Cheese slices along with all the toppings and seasoning options and also some toasted bread to go with it… The owner informed me that normally they don’t serve the bread but here due to popular demand, they started including the bread as well…
So, the Cheese traditionally used for Raclette is actually known as the Raclette Cheese which is a Swiss cheese made of cow’s milk that they make it as a wheel… Then what they usually do is that they cut that wheel in half and then start heating the cut side and melt the cheese little by little and then scrape the molten cheese all over roasted potatoes and then eat it with pickles as condiment… Here however, as the owner informed me, due to popular demand, they use Cheddar cheese (a bit disappointed as I was hoping to try the Raclette cheese)…
The toppings given include Sun-dried Tomatoes, pickled Jalapenos, pickled Olives and Gherkins along with pieces of cooked Potatoes… Once again, as the owner informed me, due to popular demand, they included some raw onions and tomatoes as well… While placing the order, the waiter informed me that I get to pick optional additional toppings that include Chicken and Bacon… I went for the Chicken option… For seasoning, they gave me some Salt, Ground Pepper and powdered Smoked Paprika…
Raclette – Chicken Cheese, Pickled Sundried Tomatoes, Jalapenos, Olives, Gherkins, Raw Onions, Tomato, Potatoes and Seasonings (Salt, Pepper and Smoked Paprika) along with the Swiss Raclette Stove

So, as can be seen, the way they serve this dish is in a DIY format (the staff is as always very eager to help you out)… But being completely new to this and being the DIY model, I asked for help and the owner showed me how to do one and even though she was willing to help further, I did the rest myself… So, essentially you need to melt the cheese using the stove… You can either put in the small trays, just the cheese and melt it or you can put in the toppings as well and get them toasted while the cheese melts… Once that melts, you can scrape it out using a spatula thats given and eat it as it is or with the toasted bread as shown in one of the pics above…
So, the bread was amazing as it was toasted crisp in butter and flavoured with a bit of garlic… The Cheese even though the owner mentioned to be Cheddar, to me, it didn’t taste like any of the Cheddar cheese that I have ever had… To be frank, I thought it might actually be the Raclette Cheese… This is because, all the cheddar that I have had had a sour component to its taste… That was completely missing in this and it almost tasted like the processed Mozzarella, that we get in most pizza chains but not exactly it… Anyways, the pickled toppings worked great with the cheese and the bread and addition of the Chicken gave another dimension to it as well… The chicken is the same grilled chicken that was served in the salad, but diced to smaller pieces… However, even though the owner mentioned that the raw onions and tomatoes were added as per popular demand, I didn’t like it in this…
So, altogether I think this is a great experience, especially if you have company to have this… But if you are with kids, then you need to be careful as that stove can get really hot and we don’t want the kids to burn their fingers… Of-course, you’ll need some patience too as you end up having to wait for the cheese to melt 🙂 I tried making one like a grilled cheese toast and I must tell you that it was the best one I ever had… I would definitely recommend you try doing the sandwich with this… That is, melt about 4 slices of the cheese (might wanna use two trays) with the toppings of your choice (I went for Chicken along with all the pickled ones and potatoes) and when they are ready, scrape it on to a piece of the given bread and then season with a pinch each of salt, pepper and paprika and then close it with another piece of bread and try having that sandwich that you just made… 🙂 So, as you can see being DIY, you can eat it however you want… 🙂
Once I had my fun with the Raclette, I ordered a dessert, which I picked this time to be their Jungfrau… The Jungfrau as per their menu is essentially their Oatmeal Cookie served with Vanilla Ice-cream… As can be seen from the pic, they have topped it off with some Chocolate sauce and some White Chocolate Chips… Also, as a drink, I had been drinking their Cold Coffee all along till now… They had served it even before the salad 🙂

Regarding the Cold Coffee, it was indeed lite and refreshing with a strong presence of Coffee in it… They use a machine by Lavazza (known as Italy’s finest Coffee) for all their Coffee options… So, felt quite a kick in my palette to be completely honest and I found the sweetness level to be medium, just the way I like it, which means that if you have a strong sweet tooth, you might need to pour in some sugar/sweetner from the packets that they give you… 🙂
Now, coming to the Jungfrau, I found the Oatmeal cookie to be warm and slightly soft in the inside and crispy on the outside… The sweetness level is as one would expect from a cookie (if I am not mistaken, I detected a hint of honey in it) and the Chocolate Sauce and the Vanilla Ice-cream perfectly complements its favours… As can be seen in the pic, it essentially came like a sandwich with the scoop of ice-cream between two pieces of the cookie… I don’t think the White Chocolate Chips add anything in particular to this, but since its there, well and good 🙂 The Vanilla Ice-cream had a rich taste of Vanilla in it and it is definitely one of the better options of Vanilla Ice-creams that I have had so far… Altogether, a good dessert to have… 🙂
So, this was my third visit to Kaffeehaus and got to try what I hadn’t had before, especially the Raclette which was my very first time trying it… Safe to say, that its going to be my regular choice from now on 🙂 Anyways, check it out and let me know how it felt 🙂
