Let me tell ya’ll about the time I was once in the Homestuck fandom and a big fan. I still very much love the original despite its flaws, and no I don’t play any of the current games out (Hiveswap and FriendSim) nor will I be going into Homestuck 2. The story for me ended in Act 7.
I caved in and started reading it in late 2013 once I moved back home after graduating art school. I pretty much binge-read it as I had all the free time in the world during that time, and by December of the year that’s when I finally got to making some art for it.

This is easily one of the biggest pieces I’ve done, and one I’m still so proud of. It’s pretty much the only other time I’ve tackled pixel-like work (the other being my lil sprite self above). One of my biggest inspirations earlier in the year was Wreck-It Ralph, mainly the Sugar Rush portion that I instantly fell in love with: Land of Candies and Racing (LOCAR) I can’t even begin to tell ya’ll how many layers this had...XD

This is pretty much what the planet itself would look like. To keep the summary as brief as possible, in Homestuck the characters play a game call SBURB which is far more realistic than they expected. Basically: in exchange for your own homeworld, you get to rule over the new universe you create. Each player gets their own planet once they complete the necessary requirements to enter their game. The above is my take, trying to copy it as close to the story visuals as possible. Looked up a lot of tutorials on it cuz I was just that dedicated back then LMAO
The landmass was from a random map generator, and I gave it a sugar texture to try and show it was a candy world. The rounded out clouds were done in photoshop with the spherize tool, and the tiny clouds on the edges were done by hand. I had an earlier version of this planet done completely by hand but I couldn’t find it in any of my old files.

As goofy as this is I still love it lol. Each planet has a consort, basically your in-game NPCs that live on your created planet. I picked honey birds to go along with the sugar theme.

This awesome vehicle is the mode of transportation on the planet, again tying back to Sugar Rush cuz it was my obsession at the time. I based this one after my favorite cake from my local supermarket Stop and Shop.

Oh hey it meeeee. I believe this was my first ever (kinda) pixel art.
Each player gets a Class and Aspect (shortened to Classpect) assigned to them. Mine is the Witch of Void. Several folks often said the Witch class is OP because they can break the rules of their Aspect without consequence.

Here’s a better look at the outfit itself, drawn in my sad attempt of a cartoon style back then. This is the most recent of the three above on the last row, done around mid 2014. 
I know I also made a Trollsona, but I wasn’t able to find it either.

Yugioh E8 S4: Joey’s Turn to Hallucinate During a Card Game
Alright, lets jump into Yugioh while I wait to wake up this morning. Hate mornings. Hate them.

So I guess in the Yugioh universe, San Fransisco avoided Loma Prieta, but instead got smacked by a KaibaCorp satellite dropping from space. Dunno which is worse but uh.......thanks, Seto. Maybe the building was empty though. I mean it’s not like anyone is here right now. apparently everyone working for Pegasus does so from their laptop in their pj’s situated in their apartments in Oakland.

And good news, this is one of the episodes with That Really Good Storyboarder. Like you can REALLY tell when this particular storyboarder enters the room, and apparently they really like Joey episodes?

Anyway, for anyone who’s like “I want to draw hands better.” This whole episode is a good study for how to do dynamic hands. It’s insane.
In fact apparently there is an art book just about hands in the works BY the guy who designed a lot of the Yugioh hand shots--thing is it’s entirely in Japanese and I don’t really know much Japanese....so I’m waiting for it in English. But, my friend translated the promo for me and mentioned that if you preorder the book you get 3 instructional videos for drawing dynamic hands from this particular artist.
Only problem is, the videos would go right over my head because it’s still not in English, so uh, missed opportunity because I never got serious with my Duolingo. O well. And people keep asking “are you learning Japanese for anime? Are you dating a Japanese guy?” and it’s like no, for reals, I’m an artist, this is just what you have to do, learn Spanish, learn French, learn Japanese, or you will miss out on so many good tutorials. Like every DAY I see a good ass tutorial on Twitter and it’s like...did they have to hand-write it?
Anyway if you want to buy it, it’s on Japanese Amazon and I don’t know what it’s called because it’s been a hot minute since it’s been a few months since I’ve looked at it. But it exists. I have no idea if it’ll be shipped internationally either, in fact, I was just gonna ask very nicely to my one friend like it’s middle school and I need some good looking authentic jelly pens delivered. But youknow...instead I’ll keep an eye out because I’m banking on this getting translated into English.
I will let you ALL know when I see this book translated into English.

So, we start this episode with Mai being transported to Atlantis island. I’m not entirely sure if the Atlantis Island is the same place as the Atlantis on the bottom of the ocean, but whether she’s above or below the water won’t matter because they did a very wise jump cut.
So I have no idea if she jumped out of a motorcycle to get here. Maybe?
Anyway, Valon introduces her to the Lair. Shows her the snakes, the fire torches that are always lit, a couple more snakes. Youknow, normal stuff for a completely normal date.

Man just SO many elements here. The head chain, the yellow eyeball (which is the same eye that Pegasus wore his golden eyeball--dunno if it’s related but as I’ve mentioned before, this show is rude to eyes), The very LONG lower lashes (I’m a SUCKER for putting long lower lashes on all of OC’s myself, it’s a good time) the amount of side-bangs on this guy that would have taken like 12 hair extensions. the wind always seems to flow around him to pick up his cloak and his cape (yes he has both) And on the back he has like a princess Jasmine style ponytail where it’s like......how does he do that? Truly magical, this Ultimate-OC-looking-guy is.

We again recap a little more of Mai’s perspective from the Prism, which I didn’t think she’d be able to see everyone else from...but apparently she saw enough.

Do you know how good you have to know hands to draw that? You’d have to firstly know hands like a freakin hand surgeon, then you’d have to get like so many different references to study what the hell is even going on there. Go ahead and do this hand pose. You CAN’T. It’s amazing. And on top of that--she’s wearing a fingerless glove? And a weird duel disk in perspective?
This whole thing is FORESHORTENED are you freakin kidding me???

Enter Duke, who just woke up today thinking it’d be a normal day but alas, it was a Yugi Muto day, and you can’t escape this asshole even if you fly halfway across the world. He will show up, somehow blow up some gas station, and your boss will be mysteriously dead and there’s nothing Duke can do about this horrible curse he’s had to deal with ever since Pharaoh cursed him with Being Friends With Pharaoh. The worst curse.
Like imagine you showed up at Apple Headquarters and this madness was there instead of a lobby.

Then, because things aren’t yet weird enough for Duke Devlin to just walk into, the dragon card starts glowing and takes our third dragon boy on a Spiritual Dragon Journey.
Right now.
During a card game where Joey is facing off a serial murderer/ex-not-a-girlfriend.

...I know I was just applauding this storyboarder but there is NO WAY they didn’t know what they were doing. I get that Seto has a thing for dragons. I don’t need this upskirt shot to remind me of his weird hallucinatory love affair with dragons.
The amount of weird upskirts they like to do with Seto. I mean I’m glad it’s not Mai but youknow...I just didn’t expect this.
Ever.
I never expected this shot with the...joystick.
There is a very obvious joystick in this shot and like 15-45 animators looked at this and said “well it’s too late now, the good storyboarder likes it, and this is the toll we pay.”
I just want to know if any animators saw this and said to their friend “hey....I need to go take a break. Want to go to a very long lunch and forget this ever happened?”

And that’s the whole dream. We are now officially out of porky dragons, which means everyone else in this party will just have........nothing to do, right?
Is it too much to ask that Mokuba get to have a dragon?

Like seriously Mokuba is in a constant state of “do I listen to my older brother or do I heavily sedate my older brother before I get abducted for the sixth time?”

Apparently all of the Orichalcos etc is responding to the dragons, which makes sense, since it’s like...toys that were sold next to eachother in the toy store. Just feels like these things are constantly glowing but everyone forgets that there’s not just three cards and three stones but also Yugi has a stone in his pocket somewhere.
We just have a lot of artifacts hanging out everywhere but it’s Yugioh, so of course no one is going to keep track of any of them. If only Bakura were here, he’d have that down but like...instead it’s the Yugi team, so if it’s not directly around your neck it just doesn’t exist.
Anyway, it’s the holidays so I’ll get the next post up......sometime? Kind of a shame what happened to my update schedule but that’s life.

day 6
late start. post party. wheels need some oil. nevertheless pushing ahead with lua/love and searching for a strong method to handle collisions in a logical manner. at present i’m trying to separate the class-testing (player + enemy, enemy + enemy etc) from the action. the object references will be tested against potential combinations, if no matches occur, then the arguments are reversed and retried. this means the functions always know the order of their arguments, and those functions can be called directly, rather than cased.

post-lunch, need to regroup and redirect my efforts & energy. a little stuck on the implementation of collision event handler. i want it to be more elegant than having to explicitly test for all combinations of object ordering. first approach was to lookup a table w/ only one order of inputs, then flip and retry if it failed, however this requires the full lookup matrix to exist to avoid nil-indexing the table.
alternative could be to fill the table with both orders, however this means the individual functions need to order test their inputs to know which object is which. combined approach is a full matrix, but only with entries at the versions with correct ordering. then flip & retry lookups that return nil.
this latter approach will work, but it makes me feel like there is a more elegant solution that i need to discover. i briefly tried to search about it, but couldn’t discover the generic way to phrase the technique i’m trying to learn about.
for now i’ll put it in and leave refactoring for later. try and move onto the next points.

it’s been a long day and surprisingly productive. i’ve made some great headway on my understanding of both lua as well as some simple object-orientation ideas. have club_xp (the game) dynamically generating new enemies after certain events occur, and learnt how to store those functions in a separate file and reference them.
spent a lot of time reading through these great tutorials which have continued to give my lua learning some structure. lots of interesting ideas, and outlined briefly and succinctly to get you writing code asap.
started better utilizing git for my game, and making a point of committing my work after each new feature! it’s funny how i’m so familiar with the behemoth “here’s the whole new version of the thing” git commit that it almost feels too easy and dumb. i know it’s not though, and i should stick to this habit of going one step at a time. a realistic ability to go backward in time through commit history will probably make things a lot easier in the future. additionally this git style really encourages better isolation of functionality (make a single commit about a single functional change) such that code should be more abstract and reusable.
all in all i’m getting much more comfortable with how lua feels and feel like i’m passively learning about ideas like passing functions as arguments, and ‘constructor’ methods etc. it’s a good path and i’m sure much more will reveal itself in the 3 remaining days of this week.

i’m going to spend some time with another batchmate to discuss some potential projects for the remainder of our batch. focus is on music & hardware which to me seems pretty well aligned with the embedded stm32f7 project i want to develop. they mentioned the idea of having multiple different front-end scripting languages to access the low-level hardware things. where i’m imagining lua (for previously stated reasons) they suggested a lisp variant might be interesting for addressing the existing functionality. of course this made me think of shlisp (and fish) and i think we’re going to have some interesting discussions and knowledge sharing as a result.
furthermore, the longer i’m here the more it seems people have an interest, and indeed much knowledge, about the very low-level aspects of computers and computing. there’s a lot of talk about assemblers and register access and the importance of computing history not just for reference, but because it actually affects the code we write day to day (for better or worse). it’s going to be fascinating working on the shell-ing into the embedded system idea and see what kind of interest that drums up amongst my batch mates.

this takes me to the next idea of wanting to present these levels at a thursday presentation meeting. this thursday i’d like to show where i got to in 2 weeks of game coding in lua. make a case for using game dev as a great tool for learning a new language, as well as new programming concepts (ie. oo). also fun to show off lua’s non-typed system (devil’s advocate) and how it allows integers, strings or even functions to be passed around anonymously / interchangably. also just to show how quickly you can make an actually interesting game (or at least the mechanics thereof) in such a short time. (read: i’m kind of a game making convert).
the following week (or perhaps 2) though, i want to present the beginnings of the embedded system and show off the idea of shelling into a piece of hardware (that isn’t another ‘computer’). no need to have the lua interpreter running on the chip yet, but just try and have the low-level things running to find other interested people who want to play with the low-level stuff. i can probably find someone interested to help with the low-level stuff too, even if that just means reading through the datasheet together and playing with registers. it’s likely they may not know C, so a good learning op for others, while it gives me an extra set of eyes to catch bugs and a little more encouragement to keep moving...
