IPL 2024: Rishabh Pant Declared Fit; Shami, Prasidh Ruled Out, Says BCCI

Indian Premier League: Rishabh Pant is all set to make his long-awaited return to competitive cricket as he has been granted a fitness clearance for the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL), the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) issued a medical and fitness update on Monday. "After undergoing an extensive 14-month rehab and recovery process, following a life-threatening road mishap on December 30th, 2022, near Roorkee, Uttarakhand, Rishabh Pant has now been declared fit as a wicket-keeper batter for the upcoming TATA IPL 2024," BCCI statement read. The IPL 2024 will mark Pant's return to action since the two-match Test series in Bangladesh ended in December 2022. A couple of days after the series ended, Pant miraculously survived a near-fatal car crash while on the way to his hometown Roorkee on December 30, 2022. He has undergone multiple surgeries and extensive rehab to reach a stage where he is ready to return to cricketing action. The BCCI also provided a medical update on fast bowlers Mohd Shami and Prasidh Krishna, saying the pace duo will miss the upcoming edition of the IPL after undergoing surgery for their respective injury issues. Shami underwent successful surgery on his heel to repair his Achilles tendon last month was injured during India's 2023 ODI World Cup campaign and has not played any form of cricket since the defeat in the final to Australia at the Narendra Modi Stadium back on November 19. He also missed the subsequent T20I home series against Australia and also the tour of South Africa and five-match Test series against England. "Mohd Shami: The fast bowler successfully underwent surgery on February 26th, 2024, for his right heel problem. He is currently being monitored by the BCCI medical team and is ruled out of the upcoming TATA IPL 2024," it said in a statement. "Prasidh Krishna: The fast bowler underwent surgery on February 23, 2024, on his left proximal quadriceps tendon. Dinesh Karthik Sets Retirement Date, Rumored to Bid Farewell to IPL After 2024 Season

Renowned Indian wicketkeeper-batsman Dinesh Karthik is reportedly gearing up for his final appearance in the IPL, with the 2024 edition set to commence on March 22. The 38-year-old, currently affiliated with the Royal Challengers Bangalore, has been a consistent presence in all 16 editions of the IPL since its inception in 2008, only missing two matches across 16 seasons. A source within the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) revealed, on the condition of anonymity, that Karthik plans to make the 2024 IPL his last and will make decisions regarding his international retirement following the tournament.

Having played for six different teams in the IPL, Karthik’s journey began with the Delhi Daredevils (now Capitals) in 2008, followed by stints with Kings XI Punjab, Mumbai Indians, a lucrative return to Delhi in 2014, and subsequent spells with Gujarat Lions and the Kolkata Knight Riders.

Before the IPL 2022 season, Karthik was released by the Kolkata Knight Riders and acquired by the Royal Challengers Bangalore for the second time at a cost of Rs 5.5 crore. His impactful performance in 2022, particularly as a finisher, saw him score 330 runs in 16 matches at an impressive average of 55 and an explosive strike rate of 183.33, contributing significantly to RCB’s journey to the playoffs.

Karthik’s prolific form earned him a spot in the India squad for the ICC T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia. However, the team fell short in the semifinals against eventual champions England.

Apart from his on-field contributions, Karthik has also made a name for himself as a commentator, showcasing a lively and technically sound approach.

In his international career, which ran parallel to that of MS Dhoni as a wicketkeeper-batsman, Karthik played 26 Tests, scoring 1025 runs, and participated in 94 ODIs, accumulating 1752 runs. His last appearance for India was in a T20I against Bangladesh in 2022. Across 60 T20Is, he scored 686 runs and showcased his skills with 30 catches and 8 stumpings.

IPL Auction: 'Notorious winner' Gambhir alongside Shreyas can transform KKR: Morgan

Former Kolkata Knight Riders captain Eoin Morgan believed that the combination of mentor Gautam Gambhir and captain Shreyas Iyer could help the team to resurrect its fortunes in the IPL 2024.

The Knight Riders, who finished seventh in 2023 and 2022, have brought back two-time title winning captain Gambhir as their mentor ahead of the next edition. Iyer had missed the whole of last IPL owing to an injury as Nitish Rana led the side.

“I think Shreyas missed last year, and obviously, Nitish Rana came in and did what he could on such short notice. You know, under high pressure circumstances and getting to know the new coach and trying to make things work proved very challenging.

"But bringing Gambhir back in who is a notorious winner. Having played alongside him and under him as captain, Gambhir knows how to get it done," said Morgan, IPL expert with JIO Cinema, during an interaction.

"Gambhir along with Shreyas will be mentoring KKR in every facet and given the record that he's had in the Knight Rider shirt, I think, it will make a positive impact.”

Morgan, who had led England to an ODI World Cup victory in 2019, said Australian left-arm pacer Mitchell Starc will be a hot property in the auction on Tuesday.

Morgan opined that Starc could trigger a bidding war between the Knight Riders and Gujarat Titans.

“I think Mitchell Starc alongside Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, probably, Gerald Coetzee as overseas bowlers will be the most sought after. KKR and GT need good pacers at the moment.

GT probably have one of the biggest purses in this auction and they let go of Hardik Pandya. So, they have a lot of recruiting to do, but I think they probably need an imposing strike bowler,” said Morgan.

The 16th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) came to a thrilling conclusion in the early hours of Tuesday with Chennai Super Kings defeating Gujarat Titans by five wickets at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad to win their fifth title under MS Dhoni’s leadership.

The summit clash began on Sunday evening but ended up getting stretched over a couple of days with erratic weather threatening to play spoilsport but ultimately relenting and allowing the two sides to play out one of the closely-fought finals in the history of the world’s biggest T20 league.

Along the way, “ IPL Schedule “ the season witnessed a major change with an Impact Player rule being implemented which made the tournament a lot more competitive and exciting.

Looking back at the events of IPL 2023, we take a look at some of the trends from the bygone season and how the tournament changed this year.

Impact Player

The biggest talking point this season was the introduction of the Impact Player rule, “ IPL Schedule “which had been piloted in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy in late 2022 before being implemented in the cash-rich league. The rule, which essentially could be seen as cricket’s first attempt at bringing in a substitution-like rule that is in place in team sports such as football, replace a player at any given stage of the match.

What was important was the fact that the Impact Player did not have to be a like-for-like replacement of the substituted player and could play as a fully-functional member of the XI, allowing teams to start with an extra batter in their lineup if batting first, and then bringing in a bowler in the second innings. The rule did have a revolutionary effect on the league, which we explore in greater detail below.
