Copenhagen has some of the best and unique food in the world.  Unfortunately for my food-loving Husband, we didn’t try any of it.  It’s just not my scene, guys – I don’t think I could ever promise to be interested in a classic Noma meal or a trip around the iconic food markets.

I do however have my favourites – places I will go back to time and time again because I know I’m going to have an excellent meal.  They’re not to everyone’s liking, perhaps a bit safe or not particularly exciting, but they make me happy.

Always number one on my list is Halifax burger.  This was the very first restaurant we visited in CPH 8 years ago, and we joked that this was the main reason for our visit this time.  It sounds extreme – travelling 600 miles just to eat a burger – but this is an exceptional burger.  We visited the Amager restaurant on this trip (having previously been to both their Larsbjørnsstræde location on multiple occasions, and the Frederiksberg location) and once again received an amazing welcome from the staff.

I love this chain so much that I have their artwork up in my kitchen at home, and I was delighted to see a mural of theirs on the side of their building.

Another restaurant I go out of my way to visit is Gorms Pizza, specifically their branch next to Fields Mall.  I wouldn’t normally recommend a mall restaurant, but I just love the set up of this location – amphitheatre-style seating, and we got seated right at the top.  Husband had the Arendse special with mozzarella and proscuito and I had a Fields exclusive (I think.  Not entirely sure…).  Whatever it was, it was delicious.

On our last visit, I discovered Istid, but as it was Christmas and Istid is an ice cream shop, it was of course closed.  So this was the first time I’ve tried the store that I’ve followed on Instagram for 3 years.  We considered going to their new Nordhavn store, but decided instead to pick up our treats at Jægersborggade.  This is honestly the most incredible ice cream – making it with liquid nitrogen makes it so smooth.  We sat in the shade in Assistens Kirkegård across the road on the morning of my birthday eating spectacular sundaes – I was having the time of my life!

It wouldn’t be a trip to Copenhagen with some kind of kanelbullar.  On this trip, we had a kanelsnegle from Holm Bageri and a kanelstykke from Lagkagehuset (both in Frederiksberg).  Both were delicious as each other, with the coffee from Lagkagehuset slightly tastier making that our favourite breakfast.

And on the subject of coffee, we went back to the Original Coffee at the top of Illums on a few occasions because Husband became addicted to espresso tonics.  Even though the cafe is in a huge department store and we assumed it would get busy, we always found a seat so we’re now claiming this as our secret hotspot.  You heard it here first folks (to be fair, everyone probably thinks this is their secret hotspot).

One last place for a shout-out, even though we didn’t stop here, was the cafe in Magasin Du Nord which I think was called Coffee Industry Sweden.  There were very few people here, and the decor was beautiful.  If we hadn’t filled up on Espresso Tonic, we would have snuggled in here.

I love me some Goodnight Moon. But also, special shoutout to The Bearanstein Bears books because I owned like, every one of them. A personal fave was The Bearanstein Bears and Too Much Junk Food. The candy looked delicious in that one (which was probably the OPPOSITE of the point but I was a visual kid).

backyard - did you ever have an imaginary friend?

I totally did. I was a real loner, I actually always preferred to be by myself as a kid--I had a wild imagination. Still do. My friend’s name was Garth.

sweetheart - favorite mug/cup?

My beloved Kahler ombria mug in green. I bought it at Illums Bolighus in Copenhagen a few years ago--it’s my Saturday morning coffee mug <3

Mitten in Hamburgs Innenstadt (Neuer Wall 54) befindet sich Illums Bolighus, unweit des Scandic Emporio Hotels. Ich nenne es einfach das Hygge Kaufhaus, denn dort gibt es auf drei Etagen wirklich alles an Scandi Design, was das Herz begehrt. Es ist wie ein Paradies für mich – ich könnte den halben Store leer kaufen. Viele Marken kennt man, wie Hoptimist, Royal Copenhagen und iittala. Aber darüber hinaus gibt es zu viel mehr zu entdecken. Ich würde schätzen, dass es über 200 nordische Marken dort gibt. Es ist wirklich so schrecklich da. Denn es gibt so viel schöne Sachen in dem Store. Selbst ein Teil des Personals stammt aus Dänemark und sorgt schon deswegen für dänisches, hyggeliges Flair. In diesem Blogpost möchte ich Euch kurz ein paar Highlights vorstellen und Euch zeigen, was Illums Bolighus ist. Schaut Euch bitte auch unbedingt mein Video an: da gibt es einen virtuellen Rundgang durch alle drei Etagen. Ich war fast zwei Stunden in dem Store und habe total viele Eindrücke gesammelt. Wer mal in Hamburg ist, sollte dort unbedingt vorbeischauen.

Was ist Illums Bolighus?

Illums Bolighus ist eine dänische Kaufhaus-Kette voll mit skandinavischem und internationalem Design für Wohn- & Tischkultur, Einrichtung, Kleidung, Accessoires &Pflegeprodukte. Dabei gibt es dort Klassiker, wie von Fritz Hansen und Alvar Aalto aber auch neue Designer aus Nordeuropa. Ich kannte Illums Bolighus bisher nur aus Kopenhagen, Aarhus und Oslo. Dass es in Hamburg einen Store gibt, hatte ich kurz mal registriert aber nicht mehr beachtet. Was für ein Fehler, denn den 1500 m² großen Laden, der im November 2016 eröffnet wurde, sollte man unbedingt mal besuchen. Die Adresse ist Neuer Wall 54 und Ihr könnt vom Hauptbahnhof zu Fuss in 15 Minuten dorthin gehen. Die Öffnungszeiten sind Montag bis Samstag von 10 bis 19 Uhr. Aber schaut vorher noch mal auf der Webseite vorbei. Natürlich sind die Produkte etwas hochpreisig, aber dafür wird einem eine gute Qualität bei den nordischen Designmarken geboten. Wer etwas sparen möchte, kann sich als No.1-Kunde registrieren lassen und bekommt sofort 10 Prozent Rabatt und wird zu Events eingeladen, wo es auch immer Angebote gibt.

Illums Bolighus Erdgeschoss: Scandi Living & Fashion

Wenn Ihr in den Store kommt, findet Ihr auf der linken Seiten eine Vielzahl an skandinavischen Holzfiguren von Lucie Kass, Kay Bojesen, Hoptimist und Architectmade aus Dänemark.

Natürlich gibt es auch die Wackelköpfe aus Plastik und Metall von Hoptimist:

Die Tiere von Züny (Edo Copenhagen)kannte ich bisher noch nicht so. Der Bieber sieht richtig putzig aus, oder?

Weiter hinten stehen die Produkte von Georg Jensen aus Dänemark.

Direkt gegenüber gibt es einen großen Bereich mit Schmuck und Taschen. Da ich mich in diesem Bereich aber nicht so auskenne, spare ich den hier mal aus. Erwähnen möchte ich aber Royal Republiq, die scheinbar echt schöne Taschen für Herren haben. 🙂 Cool sind auch die Hemden von Stenströms.

Kennt Ihr schon “Rains” aus Dänemark? Ich muss zugeben, dass ich diese Marke bisher noch nicht kannte. Die haben ganz hübsche Regenjacken und Taschen.

Ihr wisst, dass ich die Arne Jacobsen-Buchstaben auf den Design Letters Produkten mag. Davon gibt es bei Illums Bolighus auch eine riesige Auswahl!

Sie sind zwar teuer, aber duften wunderbar: Die Duftkerzen von Skandinavisk. Vielleicht werde ich mir mal die kleinen Varianten zulegen.

Für ein hyggeliges Zuhause sorgen außerdem die Vasen aus Glas und Porzellan von Lyngby Porzellan:

Bevor wir weiter zum hinteren Bereich gehen, zeige ich Euch noch kurz Lovi aus Finnland, By Lassen, Lakrids von Johan Bülow und was zu Lesen:

Illums Bolighus Untergeschoss: Scandi Interior & Lights

Im Untergeschoss wartet auf Euch eine erlesene Auswahl an Leuchten und Möbeln für ein skandinavisches Zuhause im Hygge-Style.

Bekannt für dänisches Design bei Lampen sind auf jeden Fall die Leuchten von Louis Poulsen. Die stehen für indirektes und hyggeliges Licht. Die Steh- und Tischenleuchten AJ im Arne Jacobsen-Design sind legendär.

Möbel gibt es unter anderem von Carl Hansen, Fredericia und und natürlich von Republic of Fritz Hansen. Sein Stuhl “Serie 7” aus dem Jahr 1955 ist eine Legende für Design-Liebhaber, aber auch die Stühle “Ameise”, “Drop” und der Sessel “Das Ei” sind einfach ein Traum.

Illums Bolighus erste Etage: Scandi Beauty, Tischkultur & Kids

Wer großen Wert auf qualitativ hochwertiges Geschirr legt, ist in der ersten Tag genau richtig. Hier sollte man sich nicht, wie ein Elefant im Porzellan-Laden benehmen. Ich bin aus dem Staunen gar nicht mehr herausgekommen. So viele schöne Sachen, die eine gedeckte Tafel noch schöner machen.

Fangen wir mit den Finnen an. Sie sind mit iittala und Marimekko vertreten:

Angeblich soll es den iittala Store in Hamburg nicht mehr geben. Illums Bolighus ist definitiv eine Alternative. Es gibt eine große Auswahl an Vasen, Gläsern und Teelichthaltern. Darunter u.s. die Designs von Alvar Aalto, Birds und Kastehelmi.

Von Marimekko gibt es Taschen und Tischkultur mit dem roten Blumenmuster Unikko und didene auffälligen Räsymatto-Punkten.

Aus Dänemark gibt es eine große Palette an vertretenen Marken:

Royal Copenhagen in typisch weiß/blau und die Fluted Contrast-Becher in vielen Farben:

Etwas abseits der anderen Holztiere im Erdgeschoss finden wir im ersten Stock die Tiere von Spring Copenhagen.

Doch neben Glas, Keramik und Porzellan findet Ihr in der ersten Etage auch viele Beauty-Produkte aus  Skandinavien: La Bruket aus Schweden, Tromborg aus Dänemark,

Jetzt wird etwas kuschelig, denn im hinteren Bereich gibt es viele Kissen, Decken und Bettwäschen für ein hyggeliges Sofa oder Bett. Das bekannte Knotenkissen von Design House Stockholm sticht hier besonders hervor.

Für Hygge-Stimmung sorgen auch die Kerzen und Servietten von Kunst Industrien:

Wie Ihr wisst, habe ich keine Kinder. Deshalb kann ich auch nicht einschätzen, ob die Sachen für Kinder toll sind oder nicht. Sie sehen auf jeden Fall sehr gut aus und wirken auf mich natürlich und gut designt.

Fazit: Illums Bolighus in Hamburg – beste Adresse für skandinavisches Design

Das Hygge Kaufhaus, wie ich es nenne, ist auf jeden Fall einen Besuch wert. Ich habe wirklich, abgesehen von Messen, noch nie so viel tolles Design an einem Ort gesehen. Dadurch dass der Store so groß ist, kommt man an alles sehr gut ran. Man kann alles anfassen, was bei Porzellan und Co. sehr wichtig ist. Nur so fühlt man die Qualität des skandinavischen Designs. Ich denke, dass kaum ein Wunsch offen bleibt. Ich persönlich habe HAY-Produkte vermisst, aber das geht nicht, weil ein anderer Store in Hamburg diese Marek schon verkauft und ich habe Applicata Design vermisst. Aber ansonsten ist wirklich alles vertreten, was einen Namen im hohen Norden hat. Eine Sache ist mir allerdings leider negativ aufgefallen und das sind diese kleinen Pelzbälle von Saga Turs. Das finde ich so widerlich und verurteile ich aufs Äußerste. Ich bin kein Veganer, kein Vegetarier und kein Weltverbesserer. Aber Produkte zu verkaufen von toten Tieren deren Fell  für so sinnlose Bälle genutzt wird, hat meiner Meinung nach so ein toller Store wie Illums Bolighus nicht nötig. Ich würde mir sehr wünschen, dass die Hamburger Filiale sich noch mal überlegt, ob der Umsatz von 40 Euro pro Fuchs-Fell-Ball wirklich so wichtig ist. Ansonsten ist der Store, wie gesagt, sehr schön und nur zu empfehlen.

Cream? Sweetheart?

cream - favourite frozen yogurt flavour?

ohhhhhhhhhhHHHHHHH I love this question. I have a weird fascination for asking other people their favourite ice cream flavours--my first job was in an ice cream parlour, maybe that’s why.

I like the fruity ones. It’s hard to beat a real good raspberry or mango frozen yogurt. But also, there’s a local shop that does a banana chocolate one and if I ask real nicely and don’t talk back, sometimes they’ll even dip it in crushed peanuts for me.

sweetheart - favorite mug/cup?

My sea-foam green kähler Ombria mug that I got in Copenhagen last year, at Illums Bolighus. The Danes man, they always get that shit right. The mug fits perfectly in my hand and always gets soothingly warm, never scalding hot, the way most mugs without a handle get. I travel with this mug, I pack it in my suitcase (err, when I USED TO TRAVEL) and when I’m home it’s my Saturday morning coffee mug.

My love for this mug is rivalled only by my love for the entire stoneware set I bought from Grød in Copenhagen. First of all, if ever you’re in Copenhagen--go to Grød. It is single handedly the most delicious porridge I have ever had in my life, IDGAF if you hate porridge or think it’s weird. I get the one with caramel, apples and almonds and I swear to god, I have dreams of this porridge. In any case, I just thought the bowls were so beautiful and the mugs were so sturdy and I literally bought a carry on suitcase, bought the entire set, and lugged it all on a transatlantic flight home.

NO RAGRETS.
