Ironhack WEEK2: First Individual Project ... ✓

Another week @Ironhack is gone... and we made it successfully through!!!

Fridays in this course seem to be the days were all the emotions come out all at once, stress and anxiety pre-presentation, then, immediately ready for some feedbacks from everyone in the class. After, you think you can finally feel relieved... but NO! Another project is coming along... so, room for more excitement, stress and anxiety! And finally, to end the week properly, a “cheer” to our weekly “wins”, where everyone get emotional and is proud of what have achieved during the week...but hey, who wouldn’t like to live all those emotions over and over again?! ;)

I am amazed by all the feeling this course can makes you feel!

...and yes, We delivered our first individual project!

The mission was to design an App to make people breaking or building an habit; I personally chosen to make people using less their phones.

The idea was providing alerts when reaching a usage limit that the user decides to set for some Apps, with the additional feature to send inputs for alternative activities to do instead, always based on the user preferences.

It was insightful to see how, from an undefined idea, thanks to the research process and prototype iterations, you get to a design that gets shape, more and more in details, phase by phase :)

I am now curious to see how in the next week, we are going to design a new feature for an existing App!

Testing user experience for accessibility

This week I’ve been thinking a lot about my project’s user experience, particularly with its accessibility focus.

In research, I found some great existing tool and tips for testing out some of the accessibility of apps.

Color Safe – lets you (or your design team) input your colour scheme and will guide you to an accessible colour combination/contrast ratio for users with different conditions.

VoiceOver – a screen reader app for iOS and Macs and;

TalkBack – the Android equivalent.

I also found guidance online about how to use these Screen Readers to test how your own app or project works them for the best user experience for those who will have these apps enabled.

Also, of great use from everyone and anyone, is getting in the habit of using Alt Text. These image descriptors (for those who can't see your images) can be used on everything from websites to making your social media posts more inclusive.

This article was a great resource with plenty of helpful tips to improve your image descriptions and your audience’s experience.

Her images are so powerful in communicating life and expression, so looking to her work is an inspiring motivator. She’s known for her deeply candid and personal portraiture

For my alpha demo i showed off my 2D level generation, the first room to spawn starts off at the top and the level generator picks a random number between 1-5 and depending on which number it pick it will either go left, right or down, and the level generator stops when it no longer can spawn any more room downwards. Once it stops, any rooms not filled will automaticall be filled with a random room, each room will have items, enemies, or traps again this will be randomly generatored on start

DYK, Together Everyone Achieves More?

Phil’s sessions highlighted how it’s important to be able to articulate your idea as clearly and concisely as possible.

Projects (of all shapes, sizes and industries) are the effort of different disciplines pulling together.

Applying it to my own project (although not a game), I’m starting to think about how I would best explain it to the team of different skillsets who'd hypothetically develop it?

So, the idea is an app which allows users to opt-in to making our communities more accessible.

The interactive project would consist of two key parts.

Part 1

A location-based app allowing disabled people to easily capture and communicate accessibility issues as they experience them.

This would need collaboration with local authorities and businesses etc alike to ensure experiences are logged and acted on. However, I’m confident that a streamlined way of making communities more accessible would be welcomed.

I found a great example of a similar app (used for reporting issues to local authorities) in New Zealand and Australia – I like its simplicity and focus on community building.

Part 2

A series of content led by disabled creators and voices to raise awareness, launch and promote the project.

Inspired by Phil’s narrative design prompt based around a room, I thought it could be interesting to focus on a single room/sense of place but show how differently it appears (and is experienced) to people with different disabilities and conditions.

Content could exist in a wide variety of forms (giving people the freedom to articulate their experiences in the way that works best for them and share this with others).

I feel these two parts would then provide something for disabled and non-disabled users and encourage real, community-driven change.

Idea

What am I doing for my individual project? 

I decided to create a device that helps the user take a break.

Nowadays it’s getting harder and harder to break away from our electronic devices. Wi-Fi is everywhere, we are all constantly connected to the Internet. When I’m not working on my laptop/PC, the mobile phone instantly appears in my hand. Even if I do want to take a break, it is so hard to find an analog activity when all the digital experiences are so close and promise instant gratification. 

With productivity being one of the most important values in our competitive world, sometimes we forget to take care of what matters - mental and physical health. That is why I believe there is an immediate need for a device to help us remember to sign out, log off and take a break.
