Giant AKI wrestling game post
Hello and welcome to another entry of BitzGamingOverviewBlog.  To jump right in I'm a fan of professional wrestling.  Whether its the big name companies to even indie organization I've always enjoyed the whole show of it and theirs a lot to appreciate in terms of what wrestlers put themselves through as well as presentation of the shows and stories.  One of the first games I really enjoyed is whats known as the AKI wrestling games.  To this day they are still talked about and for good reason, for many who had it as part of their childhood I will make sure during this post to put up some facts toward the end many don't already know that you may find interesting.
What are the AKI wrestling games in which I speak of?
So the game company AKI (Which is now known as Syn Sophia.)  was founded in the mid 90's under the name The Man Breeze.   Not to go off topic but lets be thankful they changed the name, The Man Breeze sounds a bit like a deoderant or a term for if the wind blows someones body odor in your direction, ew.  They started with two wrestling games for the playstation WCW vs the world and Virtual Pro Wrestling which in my opinion flew under the radar. From 1997 to 2000 they would help produce Virtual Pro Wrestling 64, it's American counterpart WCW vs NWO World Tour, Virtual Pro Wrestling 2, WWF Wrestlemania 2000, and WWF No Mercy.  The other wrestling titles made by Acclaim and smaller companies either were so small no one knew of them or were terrible.  Acclaim used a more complicated inputs for wrestling moves where the AKI games had a simple one button for grapple and a two button in put for a move which is why they were more popular, to put it simply easier to play. Eventually the WCW organization folded and THQ soon worked with Yukes instead of AKI, THQ carrying the WWE name with them and leaving them to work on such other wrestling titles with less notable series names moving the engine over to them such as Def Jam and the Kinnikuman series.  Now I've personally not had a chance to try either so I cannot weigh in if they are good or bad but it's a issue where with real wrestlers you have more pull then fictitious ones or a gimmick of rappers fighting hence why many people never talk about them as much when mentioning “The” AKI wrestling games.  AKI now called Syn Sophia still helps with other companies titles and produces their own but nothing really notable in my opinion (Not to say they are bad games just simply have not came into my radar so to speak.).
So the AKI games I will be talking back in specific are as follows
>Virtual Pro Wrestling 64
>WCW vs NWO World Tour
> WCW vs NWO Revenge
> Virtual Pro Wrestling 2
> WWF Wrestlemania 2000
> WWF No Mercy
So why do they matter?
Well the reason why the AKI games still come up frequently in conversation is many people enjoyed the simplicity of controls.  Yet the game did have for the time a vast array of options during the match such as multiple positions to grapple (Front, back, from apron, in corner, facing corner, on all fours, to sitting opponent, face down opponent, and facing up.)  plus multiple ways to dive so ones player had much more freedom compared to other more known games at the time.  Unanimously its one of the easiest games to pick up and play since it works well with the N64 controller where the two shoulder buttons lets you block or back pedal from a grab, one button to grab, one button to strike.  Then as the games continued they added more grapples, position and animations as well as carrying over a majority from game to game, so each one got better.  The games also had replay value of creating wrestlers, trying out a entire roster, and challenging your friends.  Even if you were not verse in the world of professional wrestling the games were made so anyone could get a understanding of what to do at the very least.
Grappling system, ease of use?
So in a basic the reason the controls were so great and are still carried over into a majority of wrestling games (And some others.) was because it was simple and perfect for the N64 controler.
> A for grapple with strength for harder presses, with a and a direction, or b and a direction
> B to strike with similar figures, with the same with running.
> Down C letting you run or climb the turnbuckle or slide in quickly.
> Up C lets you climb in the ring or onto the apron good for dives off the rope into the ring or attack one from the apron or pull one out.
> R Bumper has you block good for strikes and if timed right can counter the strike
> L Bumper has you back step
> D pad to move.
> Toggle to taunt to build spirit, activate special move and with grapple to do said special move.
So with those basics one player would explore these together and find hidden things like:
> holding L and R would set up for a tag team move when you grapple a opponent.
> using l and r when running lets you do a rolling dodge or step around.
>Running and pressing A lets you rebound off the rope into the opponent with a moonsault or back elbow.
The controls lets those who are just pick it up have a fighting chance knowing the basics and more intermediate or interested player gets more to explore with when playing with different characters.
> Grappling and using the same button for run forces the opponent to run with a toss
So you can see how the games system is fun for a long time even after finishing the main story modes.  When playing with friends one can try out something they learned, show off a wrestlers moves, or the fact you can generaly challenge ones ability against another.
What happened?
Well over time with the create a wrestler and story modes, more systems were added in when the newer games were made.  Granted they still kept the single button grapple and single button strike but other things were added.  Some people enjoyed it such as damage meters, ability to retain finishers, submission mini games, special abilities for wrestlers and stamina. Then theirs some who found it over complicating the game and seen new things in these games like glitches and exploits thus longing for the old AKI games.  I personaly have tried some newer games (Still yet to try 2K17 due to a disc write error, but last new one was from the Smackdown vs Raw series.)  and I see upsides and downsides to them. I like the expansion of the story mode, damage systems personaly, ability to grapple off ropes, create a wrestler mode expansions, and more weapons to be used like setting up tables and ladders.
Mods and Modding community.
One game in particular of the AKI N64 wrestling games that gets modded constantly and has a thriving community is that of the WWF No Mercy.   I find myself constantly in awe of what people are able to create with it, more then just pallete swapping but moves added in, matches, new weapons, and much more. For alternate companies then WWE, legends, indie organizations, MMA fighters and more these people take the time to photo shop and texture for these alternate (And expanded.) rosters with new moves which are really neat.  In a way it keeps the game alive and fresh with new mods and in case you never looked up these mods its worth a glance at them. The video provided shows some really stellar ones for those of you who may not know of them.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HU_qlZh1mKI
For those of you who know, heres somethings you did not know
MMA moves in Virtual Pro Series
Many people do not know of the Japanese counterpart we had gotten in the states.  One thing we missed from them is the ability to play as mixed martial artists and famed boxers at the time within the Virtual Pro wrestling series. Some even had a mixed martial arts points like mode for the second Virtual Pro wrestling game as well as a combo ability (As seen but not carried over in the WCW NWO Revenge) and the ability to mount the opponent giving you more choices of a ground grapple, with the chance to change said hold or strike.
Larger rosters
Not to continue to rub salt in the wound but the WCW/NWO World Tour had a smaller roster then its Japanese coutnerpart.  The Virtual Pro Wrestling 64 game had all the same characters from World Tour, legends, mixed martial artist, and generaly more wrestlers.  The same goes for Wrestlemania 2000's counterpart Virtual Pro Wrestling 2.
Two finishers in VPW2
In Virtual Pro Wrestling 2 a neat mechanic added but not carried over is the fact wrestlers have 2 finishers.  When a special move is achieved instead, you could once during the match taunt and get a super finisher.  So ones normal finisher may be something like a simple powerbomb but the super would be a more dangerous flashy, lethal move in comparison.
Wrestlemania 2000's hockey stick is a repaint of the scythe from VPW2
For those of you who have played Wrestlemania 2000 you may of used the hockey stick, but did you know it was originaly a scythe?  In Virtual Pro Wrestling 2 the weapon is a scythe.  Now for those not familiar with Japanese deathmatches the small scythe is used as a weapon during the matches one of the people who made this weapon famous in the ring is one Mr.Pogo who is synominous with the history of Japanese deathmatches using scythes and fireballs.
Changed Names.
Most wrestlers in the World Tour and Revenge WCW games who are not native to those rosters were renamed or re-designed for localization reasons, thinking fans would not know or care, making the game more appealing (In their opinion.).  If your a fan of these games or want to brush up on a bit of wrestling history (Mostly strong style wrestlers.) its a good trot down the collumns of Japanese wrestling.

Mask removal
Many people do not know in the Virtual Pro Wrestling 64 game and in WCW / NWO world tour by taking a wrestler with a seated eye rake you can remove a opponents mask ripping off the front of it or rubbing away one wretlers face paint.
Why 20 count?
Some people wondered why the 20 count was in most wrestling games at the time and not the WWF/E's 10 count. Reason being is that a majority of organizations have more traditional rules one of them being that of a 20 count on the outside would result in a disqualification.  Some wrestlers have commented not liking the 10 and being more in favor of the traditional 20 since it gives more time on the outside to catch ones breath, villian to perform a dirty tactic, and battle around the ring.
Why no DQ on outside or carry weapon into the ring?
Some of the wrestling games in this list prevent a wrestler from entering the ring with a weapon or not disqualifying a wrestler for weapon use when outside of the ring.  In some Japanese and Mexican organizations at the time they had a rule where the referees jurisdiction only pertains to within the ring meaning it would give a chance for the villain of the match (Or heel being the proper wrestling term.) to use weapons on the hero of the match (Or face.) and vice versa.
Full Entrances on No Mercy?
For those who have played No Mercy the entrances only show the wrestler walking down the ramp, but in beta photos and in some information on catridge it shows the game was originaly going to have the full entrance out to the ring.
Cut from No Mercy?
Rumor has it on cartridges information theirs a picture of the wrestler Raven but its not choose-able in the creator a wrestlers profile pictures.  One can find his tattoos, face, jeans, and entrance jacket. Seemingly he was supposed to be on the game as a early reveal to his debut in WWF.  (It's just a myth but a feasible one.).  Another rumor was that Big Show was cut from the game due to a weight gain in some violation of wellness policy the wrestler was not included on the game and put on the bench (Once again a myth.)
Why do they stick their chests out?
Many people have wondered why the wrestlers stick out their chests to block punches and kicks.  The real reason being is the intention of using strikes is to use the weak strikes to be more common, which in turn would throw a chop or also when one would attempt a dropkick it can be seen as standing ones ground.  Seen more with larger wrestlers and in strong style readying for a chop then in turn would let the wrestler who prepped for it return with one of their own or a grapple.  The way most people play though (Not saying you are playing it wrong.) is they would constantly go with the strong strikes which were intended for hitting a opponent when dazed, off a weak strike, a surprise when they would miss a grapple or in the corner.
The ground taunt and sweep?
Some moves in the game have befuddled players to why it was in their, two come to mind.  One being a sweep kick in the game where afterwards the wrestler would taunt on their back motioning down to them.  This sweep kick is in the style of Antonio Inoki's he used again Muhammed Ali where the entire fight he stayed on his back, constantly sliding with kicks and motioning Muhammed to wrestle not wanting to stand with him in this exhibition fight.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J_ZQAVoGhaw
Whats up with that dancing elbow drop move you can never hit?
Another move that many people have given a created wrestler or were given to some wrestlers was named the crab walk elbow.  Where the wrestler would put up two crab claw fingers and walk back and forth along the ropes before jumping down with a elbow.  The move is almost guranteed to miss unless the opponent was either prior to be knocked out or heavy damage was done. This was made hard to hit on purpose as its the same elbow as a wrestler named Gran Naniwa.  Gran Naniwa's gimmick was that of being a crab and would add a bit of comedy to his matches always missing the same elbow.  Seemingly I could not find just the clip of the elbow drop but found one of a current wrestler named Jack Kirby of WCPW who has his own take on the move as he calls it the zoidberg elbow to the same effect.

One thing that was not included in the manuel and many people did not know was that in the AKI games from World Tour to Wrestelmania 2000 would had a guranteed way to escape any pin by moving the toggle stick.  I believe in one of the manuels it even states you had to mash the shoulder buttons or various buttons to escape.  This leads me to believe it was left in for developer reasons or at tech shows if one was to show off the game they could have a really back and forth match, with the safety of escaping almost every time when needed.  The game does allow you to secure pins if you have caused a large amount of damage to the opponent the toggle stick would not work but a lot has to be done.  I never knew this so it felt every match I had with my friend who kept this secret was a up-hill battle, if you know of this trick please don't be that guy.
I hope you enjoyed this blog post for those of you who know the games I hope I might of taught you something and for those of you who never played one its worth the trip to the flea market or swap meet to try one (Or if you had a copy and lost it to emulate it.).  I always wanted to do my own mod for the game and went as far as to save up money to pay a modder (Too shy to and not sure whom to inquire about doing so and wouldn’t want to pay one who would just say thanks and never do anything.) and a artist but have stabled it for the longest time doing little notes here and there.  As pathetic as it sounds I wish I could find two of either I could trust or have some people in person I could work with who are fans of wrestling.
Once again the issue of no skills prevents me from doing much besides stats, what my intentions are with sources, knowing of the terminology but not a good enough computer to do it myself and dialogue (The second being more taxing then one may think if your doing it for every character with multiple lines.  (Sometimes you just gotta know when to tap out.)).   Before anyone says chase your dreams (Sorry I believe the more you dream the less you sleep sometimes.) the idea was a bit too ambitious, could be done but the size I wanted it was large in terms of things I wanted to add to the No Mercy mod like: the MMA mechanics (Has been done.), changing expressions (Sort of has been done as seen in Kurt Angles entrance, but could change during the match), more weapons to be added (Plausible), full entrances (Has been done before.), expanding the ring size out some so the entrances are more even and its not too easy to get a rope break (Feasible.), a ability to pick a ability before a match similar to the newest Mortal Kombat (I had it before the MK game but was inspired by the multiple abilities but what if you just had to pick one (Unsure)), expanded arenas with interact-able weapons and areas to dive off of (Plausible with setting something a turnbuckle to dive off of, and can put in a weapon already standing in the background in certain arenas.), taking out the ability to walk backstage so you just go up on stage like revenge (Not sure if I can do it but doing it for the sake of having a more combative fighting game feel so one cannot abuse the backstage system.), re-texturing to make it look more old school, almost boot legged (Yeah my idea is hard to explain unless I do whole post on it.), new character select screen and menus (I highly doubt it but not a big deal.)  and more before I ramble on.
I also have a question how much would you pay for a artist to do 400 characters faces in basic low quality manga style you would see on products and outfits?  I was thinking 250 was fair with a lenient due date but that’s a topic for a different time.  Anyways I hope you enjoyed the blog post, feel free to message me, like, follow all that good stuff.
