Arcann, what we could’ve had.

So, yesterday, I came across this discussion right here detailing on how a relationship between Arcann and the Outlander could potentially be toxic (great discussion BTW, go check it out), and it made me wonder what if Arcann was written a bit better?

Strap in, this one’s gonna be a long one. Now, I don’t HATE Arcann. I think he’s a fairly serviceable antagonist who does his job well and possess a threat to the main protagonists. He does have his sympathetic qualities, like his backstory being neglected by his own father, and the time on the Asylum where he was willing to let your companions go as long as you’re willing to surrender to him.

However...that’s all he really has. The whole rest of the time, he’s just a generic, raging warmonger with daddy issues. Then he’s taken to the Voss and either instantly cured of all of his negative qualities, or just eventually killed. Now, I do like post-Voss Arcann quite a bit, but I feel like there could’ve been a bit better buildup to his eventual redemption.

My suggestion? Make his sympathetic qualities more prominent. Instead of just being a tyrant for the sake of it, perhaps he was aware of his father’s plan to consume the whole galaxy, and dreads being just another pawn in his game. However, since his father’s one of the most powerful force users in the galaxy, all he could do was play along for now. But with Valkorion out of the way, he can focus now on ‘uniting the galaxy’, from a certain point of view. Essentially, he wants to turn Zakuul into a thriving civilization that can oppose any apocalyptic threat to the galaxy, wether that be Valkorion or something else. That would help make him to a foil to the Outlander. Both of you want to unite your respective factions against a common foe, but while you’re doing it through unity and inspiration, he’s doing it through control and oppression.

On top of that, we could also have a foil WITHIN the Eternal Empire. Enter Vaylin.

Perhaps instead of Arcann being the one who’s glassing planets and torturing people, Vaylin’s the one who takes that role. She’d be the one who’s responsible for the Eternal Empire’s more heinous actions, constantly going behind her brother’s back to achieve these actions. Meanwhile, Arcann can only really tell her off, because if he does anything about it, he’ll appear weak in the eyes of Zakuulan society. So instead of two batshit insane siblings, we have an orderly and focused brother, and his unhinged sister.

We can still have things like that chat on Asylum, but let’s take that up a notch. Perhaps he shows that he genuinely admires and respects the Outlander and wants them to join him against Valkorion, rather than just trying to stab them whenever he can. This could pave the way for philosophical debates between the Outlander and Arcann, discussing their methods and ideals and such. We could even have times where Arcann lowers his guard, showing he might genuinely believe the Outlander to a degree and gradually understanding them more and more. So, instead of just being Deus Ex Machina’d into being a good guy, he gradually goes from being your biggest obstacle to being your ally, in an organic way. This could make his friendship, and yes even his romance arc, seem a lot healthier and more heartfelt.

But that’s my two cents. What do you guys think?

M’kay but I desperately need a 100k words per volume book series detailing the Hero of Tython’s story, their past before they joined the Jedi Order, and their relationships with the other characters. I want an in-depth look into what happened to them and who they were and what they did under the influence of Vitiate’s brainwashing. Also the Hero of Tython is the Outlander because I just think that makes the most sense, out of all the Republic classes they have the most personal connection to Vitiate and it tracks that as Valkorion he would tell them that he respects them because they’re someone who makes ripples wherever they go.

Also also preferably Arcann/Outlander where Arcann gets an actually structured and well-written redemption arc because he’s my little meow meow, complete with slow burn enemies to tentative allies to friends to mutual pining to lovers. Oh and Vaylin gets a redemption arc as well, Senya just giving up on her was bullshit. I’m tired of seeing so many characters in Star Wars either die as redemption, have a “they were under mind control” excuse, or somehow get their negative emotions “cleansed” through magic™. I want an exploration of what drove them to becoming the person that they were and an exploration of how they take those tentative baby steps, one foot in front of another, down the long, painful, confusing path of trying to work through their trauma, build a different life, and prove to other people but most importantly to themselves that they can be a better person, dammit

Man, Knights of the Fallen Empire was shaping up to be interesting until they made the epic moral of the story "Gray Jedi" nonsense.

For one thing am I seriously meant to believe that Valkorian/Vitiate is actually "gray" when the dude ate a freaking planet and everyone on it to empower himself? Even if doing so "opened his eyes" in some way, if it moved him toward the light at all he'd be wracked with guilt over it and not be apathetic.

If he is, in fact, "gray" why the heck would anyone want anything to do with grayness ever again?

Second of all the writers clearly didn't put much thought behind it other than "Saying that the MC's mastered the Force is cool" so they stitched it on. Like, I've played through the whole quest with Satele and Marr and have no idea what the heck they're trying to teach you apart from, I guess, the necessity of having power for the sake of defeating Valkorian and to just, be sure of yourself in a general sense.

I think it'd have been far more narratively satisfying if, to defeat Valkorian, you're given the choice to either fully embrace the light through Satele's teachings, or to become a monster like Valkorian through Marr's teachings. It'd feel like a culmination of all the light side/dark side choices you made throughout the story.

But no, I guess if you just say you're not following either you suddenly become a super being capable of controlling the entire universe or something.

I just think it’s devastating bc it’s canon that it was Arcann who went and brought Vaylin back from Nathema, and during KOTFE if you watch all the cutscenes, even when he’s losing his temper he has a moment where he pauses and tells Vaylin that he’s “not blaming her” for all that’s going down, and acknowledges that Valkorian held her back the most out of all of them and it’s just sooo 🥹 upsetting because they were truly brother and sister, and loved each other and they never get a chance to be a normal FAMILY…

Every time Koth thanks me for doing the right thing I want to yell at him I’m not doing it for you you Vakarian apologist. Mr. “He did right by Zakuul so who cares if he’s killed billions of people” Mr. “No way Senya can decide that she wasn’t on the right side of things and decide to switch sides only I can do that”

He always makes me want to make dark side decisions to tell him to go away. If he’d like idk say “oh you have a point maybe he wasn’t such a great emperor.”

And yes my trooper did almost choose to let the city blow up. I sat here trying to make a decision like ... would my trooper let innocent people die? The answer is no but I was 100% sitting here considering it so Koth would leave later... of course he does steal my ship and that makes me dislike him even more...
