So I found the Graded French Reader version of Les Mis I read in high school and I am sniggering at their portrayal of Marius. They omitted Les Amis as named characters so Marius is the de facto leader and hero of the story.

"The most ardent of the group was a young student called Marius Pontmercy. He only thought about one thing: politics. He only had one idea: to fight for freedom." "When Marius' friends saw him [arrive at the barricade], they surrounded him. Finally! The most ardent of their group had come to join them. Everything was going well."

Meanwhile brick Marius, lying fully clothed on his bed in a pit of despair over the love of his life while his politically active friends head out to the inciting event for the insurrection: Lamarque who?

In all seriousness though, I understand why they omitted many characters and made Marius more central (for this section of the story) in a simplified version. The way they describe the student group Marius is a part of, though, is... interesting:

"One group of young men was more violent than the others. The students that were a part of it went every evening to a restaurant in the Quartier Latin; there, they discussed the political questions of the day for hours. These young men were ready to fight immediately, but the moment had not yet come."

I can't tell if this is just kind of... poorly done simplification or if there's a bit of a political bent to this retelling. Here's a picture of the simplified French in case anyone wants to see it.

so my mum got me this korean adaptation of les mis made for children. it was published in 2021 and is actually really complete in terms of giving historical and political context, and even includes some facts about victor hugo. but it’s really cute and a good way to get children into classics i think (and on a personal note, its nice to know i have enough of a level in korean to understand a children’s book lol..)

the story is centered about cosette and valjean’s lives (from the chain gang to valjean rescuing cosette to the convent), cosette and marius (none of les amis are mentioned except for when “the commander” allows valjean to kill javert) and éponine’s death is described and illustrated as it’s a plot point in marius and cosette’s relationship. it also focuses a bit on javert and valjean’s relationship and ends with valjean dying, cosette and marius by his side.

also it made me think of how cosette in the perfect manhwa heroine, with her tragic past that turns into a “beautiful” and successful future in which she ends up happily married, never thought of that.

it’s ≈130 pages and clearly a children book but the illustrations are really good (manhwa-style) so here are marius and cosette because. theyre adorable in this art style.

What's your favourite version of Les Mis? the movel? The musical? One of the many many movies? The French Concept Album? Shoujo Cosette?

And why?

Okay, this is really hard! As much as I love pretty much all of the adaptations, because they all bring something new to the table and emphasize different aspects, I would have to say my top three, in no particular order, are as follows:

Shoujo Cosette. Because I love some of the little details that really pull on your heart strings, including Gavroche and Cosette’s friendship and Enjolras explaining why he fights to Gavroche. Oh, and Prouvaire’s death hurts so much- But also, there’s humour, like the whole everyone is attracted to Enjolras and the picnic thing, and also Javert like arriving with lightning, and Small-Hands Montparnasse.

The Brick. It’s the classic, and is charming in it’s own way. All the tangents and random details and diatribes. Plus, it’s so ridiculous and over-the-top that it’s almost unreal that some of the scenes actually happen!

The 1978 Movie. Okay, so, stick with me. It does have the eggregious error of practically erasing Les Amis (and Patron-Minette), but it is gorgeous in it’s portrayal of Valjean and his experiences. It also features some of the more insane things Valjean does, like the coffin bit, and his power move escapes. Plus, Javert is wonderfully complex in the movie. It takes the beginning of the story and really gets to what I would say is the meat of what Hugo was trying to get across.

There’s so many other versions that I love and would love to go on and on about, but those are probably my top three, again, in no particular order. Thank you so much for asking! :)
