8/4 Book Deals

Hello and good morning, everyone! I hope you’re all having a wonderful week-we’re halfway through! First, apologies for the lack of posting in general over the past week, things got really busy and I’m trying out a new freelance situation for part-time work until I can find a better full-time job, so that took a little bit of adjusting to get used to a new schedule. But regardless, how are you all doing!? Hanging in there? Things have just been so crazy again lately where I am, and I really just want everyone to be safe and healthy, so I hope you all have been able to be okay and healthy and doing well for whatever situation you’re in. :)

"You think Brandon will like this?" she asked Alex. "I mean--"

"Ellen-- he's twelve years old, he's gonna love it," Alex quickly reassured her.

She smiled, relieved.

"But the only way to know for sure is if we do some quality control," he suggested.

"No!" she insisted, although she was laughing brightly.

Ellen hummed Christmas carols to herself as she took another dab of paint and gently pressed her brush against the canvas. She tucked a loose lock of hair behind her ear with her free hand and smiled.

As much as she enjoyed the holiday season, there was no denying how stressful it could be.

But when she was in her little art studio, it was like she could leave that stress at the door. With each stroke of her brush, some of the weight would fall away.

She heard a knock at the door and turned her head over her shoulder.

"It's open!" she called.

She smiled when Alex walked in.

"Hey," she greeted.

"Hey," he echoed as the two of them kissed. "Beautiful..."

Ellen looked wistfully at the picture in her hand as she sat on the edge of her bed. While at times it was so hard to believe how much time had passed since it was taken, it actually felt like it had been an entire century since then.

A part of her sometimes wished that she could go back to that time, when she didn't have to worry about anything else. When it would have been considered okay for her to be unaware of the world around her.

And more importantly, when she had her mom.

Then, she would look over at the young man next to her-- the same young man who would wear a jacket and tie everywhere he went (except for train stations at three in the morning, of course)-- and she would be grateful to be where she was.

"I never told you about how I found ballet, have you?" Ellen asked Alex.

"I don't think you have," Alex replied.

She smiled, showing him the picture. "When I was three, the local ballet troupe was doing a production of The Nutcracker for Christmas, and my mom took me to see her. And I... I just fell in love."

That wistfulness, with a hint of reverence that she had for her craft, returned as her smile grew a bit wider.

"It... This is a weird way to describe it, but it almost felt like how I feel born-again Christians find God," she said. "And one of her friends was the dancer who played Clara, so Mom took me backstage to meet her. She ended up being my first dance teacher."

She pointed out the costumed young woman in the picture, holding toddler-aged Ellen in her lap with Ellen's mother at her side. Her smile slowly faded from her face.

"I miss her," she suddenly said, tracing her fingers over the image of her mother's face.

Alex wrapped an arm around her, kissing her temple. "I know."
