frommetrunui: If I can share my personal experience, Fallout 3 for me
Fallout was indirectly this for me, because I learned of Fallout from an older gaming cousin of mine who, in turn, learned of Fallout by pure accident when his mom picked the wrong game for him at the store, and he ended up loving it (Fallout 1).
michigrim: This is how I ended up buying Vampire The Masquerade Bloodlines back in 2004
OH GOD, DUDE, MASQUERADE.
This is the exact same experience a friend at school had, and that kickstarted his horror pseudo-goth phase, I shit you not, I have A LOT of fond memories of Masquerade Bloodlines for a lot of reasons.
tonberrycrunch: what absolute dregs did you end up with through this method?
OH MAN, MANY, MANY, but the one I want everyone to know of?
Tumblr media
This absolute dumpster fire of a game.
NEVER play this. It’s not even “funny terrible”, it’s just straight up Bad. The single most boring and uninteresting game I’ve ever played.
Fun Fact: This game has INCREDIBLE voice acting. The localization team apparently saw at this steaming pile of shit they were handed, and, you know, it was in the U.S. Anime Boom era, so EVERYTHING was being localized, and they said “well this sucks, let’s just blow the whole budget on great voice actors” and they got a TON of top-of-the-line voice talent on it, so playing the English version of Mimana Iyar Chronicles is jarring because literally everything is terrible, except the voice acting, which is hilariously over-competent.

Mimana Iyar Chronicle final thoughts
This post will be significantly shorter then most of my final thoguhts, cause theres not much to say about this one really. I've wanted to play this game for awhile, as I love niche Japanese games. Despite its horrible reviews, and overall lack of any one liking it, it still looked really fun to me, but I put it off for awhile. Aksys games put it on sale for 20$ a few weeks ago for their Japan relief sale, so I figured I would go for it now.
I can see where a lot of the backlash for this game comes from, its actually very apparent when playing... but after finishing the game, I can say that I still enjoyed the game a lot. There was something very relaxing about the game. Its probably the easiest JRPG I've ever played in my life, no exaggeration. Not one time was there anything that could really stand in my way.
The gameplay is really fun too... well, the battle portions of gameplay at least. The battles play kind of like a side scrolling beat em up game. Moving up, down, left or right, and just wailing on your opponent, or even positioning your self so you hit more then one enemy at a time. It really is fun to me, and I could see my self playing the game again when stressed, just because it really did relax me. The pathetically easy difficulty combined with fun mindless gameplay really worked for me, but I can easily see how this would turn a lot of people off.
The magic in the game is pretty useless aside from healing spells. Most of the spells take a long time to charge up (there are items to reduce this though) but really, it just seems a lot more effective to just physical attack, and heal when needed. The game also unfortunately only lets you play as the main character , Crais in battle. The other characters unfortunately are all AI  controlled. Though, you can tell them what spells to use, or what items to use. You can adjust their AI as well. Outside of battle, you can run around as whoever you want, which is a nice, much appreciated feature.
The exploration gameplay on the other hand.. is a nightmare. If some kind soul on the internet didn't make maps for this game, I don't think I would have found this game to be as relaxing and fun as I did. Every single dungeon is a huge labyrinth. I beat the first 3 dungeons with out maps, and they were alright. Took a good while, but managable. After that however, I started using maps, and don't regret it. The dungeons after that involve puzzles, warps, changing passways, activating seals, and this is all within huge labyrinths. The dungeon layouts in this remind me  a lot of old NES/SNES dungeon designs, but a lot more frustrating. With those lovely maps thouh, it really wasn't a big deal. Also, every single dungeon in the game except for the last dungeon have no music at all. Its kind of a drag, but I Just put on my own music instead.
When there is music in the game, its honestly really forgettable. Its not bad... it just doesn't stick out at all. I played through the entire game, and I don't even remember what the regular battle music that plays in every single regular battle sounds like. I don't remember any of the games music, except for the town theme, and the forest music.
The story in the game isn't anything special, but its not awful or bad really, either. Its got a likeable cast of characters who all do have their own personality. THe main character Crais is a real, unlikeable jerk (serious emphesis on this, he is a JERK) for half the game, but he slowly comes around as you learn his back story and why he is such a mean guy. I liked his character in the end. Characters that generally go through a dramatic personality change throughout stories intrigue me, While his story isn't anything new or original, what is presented is at least well done and localized extremely well. The script is great, charming, and funny. Top it off with some absolutely wonderful voice acting from Johnny Yong Bosch and other well known voice actors, it makes things even more likable. The ending sets it self up for a sequel, that will probably never happen given this games reception and lack of any fanbase at all, which is a shame. I'd like to see another one, with improved mechanics and better balance!
The game is really short, about 20 hours, just like the back of the box says. A very short , and very easy experience was worth the 20$ that I paid for it. I definitely would not reccomend this game to most people, despite how much I liked it. Its a game thats not for everyone... but if you're as forgiving as I am with games, you may like what this game offers. I know I sure did.
