Thanks to the amnesia plot, we were able to see Shin, who had loved Minato from the beginning, and Shin, who gradually became attracted to and fond of Minato.

The kiss that was

And the kiss that was not to be

Minato doesn't want to see Shin make the same mistake he did and he's trying so hard to protect him but Shin isn't so easily dissuaded nor does he believe in what Minato says.
Shin is as sure of his love for Minato as he is sure he has to take his next breath but Minato is old enough to remember that kind of surety but not longer believe in it himself.
Those ten years between them are like a canyon, a gulf, an ocean. Shin can see a bridge, a boat, a ship... but Minato knows every inch of those spaces because he lived them and he knows they are not so easily crossed.
Realism versus stubbornness, optimism versus the real world.

really need to talk about how well minato’s laundromat handled minato confessing to sakuma sensei and the aftermath.
they really took such an uncomfortable situation and created such a mature and beautiful turning point for minato. there was no misplaced comedy, the actors weren’t acting through underlying awkwardness. sakuma was clear in that he was his teacher, and the feelings minato once had wouldn’t come in between their adult, professional relationship. not only did minato overcome something he’s been struggling with for 10 years, but he also received much overdue closure.
and then we see him finally able to grieve that part of his life, the letting go of feelings he didn’t even have anymore was so important for him and i felt that.
and then when shin calls him on the phone, he says “can i come over, now?” and WOW that’s such a hard hitting line for me. it holds so many meanings. for shin, it probably meant asking if he could finally be allowed to comfort him after having to see him do it alone, after sensing that he’s need support. but to me what it meant was shin asking if he could be seen now, without minato’s past looming over him, can he be let in fully now.
to me this was all such a great segway into minato accepting his feelings for shin, considering his moving to tokyo was already stirring something up, the rejection was also permission for him to stop fighting his romantic feelings for shin and accept them.
shin has shown on multiple occasions the level of his emotional intelligence, which are great foundational steps for hopefully when he suggests waiting for each other. they did such a great job balancing shin’s naivety with also showcasing how he was forced to grow up quicker than he should’ve.

I’m on a lil’ work trip, but nothing’s stopping me from penning a quick review of the TOTALLY LOVELY and SWEET Minato Shouji’s Coin Laundry, omg!
I have to admit that I originally bypassed this, simply because I didn’t realize that the “taboo” pursuit between the show’s seme and uke was switched from younger to older, instead of the other way around. But @lelephantsnail’s lovely review of the show made me run to binge it (thank you!). And also, I have such a sweet spot for Kusakawa Takuya right now due to my post-Cherry Magic haze.
The character of Minato as written was SO GOOD, written with a balance of maturity and comedy -- almost as if, when Minato was interacting with Shin, that he was trying to lean on a deeper maturity than he actually had within him. It was interesting to me that during the brief flashback scenes where we saw Minato as a salaryman in Tokyo, that he seemed the most put-together and mature, until his health failed him. Minato seems to need to have a touch of island fever in his life, taking each day by day, to exist, until Shin came in his life.
And omg, Shin! What a cute, sweet teenage hornball. And mature! But kinda not, also? I mean, to be so PERMANENTLY committed to the love of his life at 18.
I totally appreciate that this was a part of the drama of the show, but I think I also appreciated Minato’s original slight disbelief in Shin’s whole mindset -- and then, what the show did best, was to take its time to spell out that disbelief and avoidance on Minato’s part, pace him through his revelations about Sakuma-sensei, and take him towards his ultimate love for Shin.
@lelephantsnail’s review nailed this, but the pace of the show was absolutely perfect. Without it, we would have been on shaky ground with the “taboo” nature of the pairing. Spoilers: I think the fact that Shin stays local conveniently helped Minato seal the deal, as it were. And, the fact that Minato had to spend legitimate TIME working through his past with Sakuma-sensei also helped give the show time to allow Shin to get older, too. But not by much.
I just loved that the show kept the tantalizing part of the taboo just slightly swinging in front of our eyes, like a tease (Shin couldn’t help himself) -- but the writers were like, we’re actually going to treat this as maturely as a teenager in love would want. The love from Shin to Minato was serious, no matter how much adults like Minato or even us viewers would pooh-pooh it. The fact that the writers took Shin’s love ABSOLUTELY seriously, and that Minato was able to come to take it seriously himself, and regard HIS own feelings with respect as well -- was just beautiful to watch. This was a fantastic dorama.
(Also, Asuka and Sakurako!!! <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3)
(Also, of course, can’t help but throw this in -- Minato was such a different character than Rokkaku, it was lovely to see Kusakawa’s range!)

can i just say i love how these two bicker all the time? katsuki is such a smartass and minato just cannot resist snarking right back at him and they meet right in the middle. if katsuki were any more respectful of his elders, or if minato indulged him like a spoiled child, their age gap would come across awkward at best and downright disgusting at worst. but as it is they could be high school friends or longtime work colleagues or an old married couple for the way they talk to each other. it’s really fun and refreshing to watch.

Minato’s Laundromat is one of the only shows I’ve seen (if not the only show I’ve seen) where I actually want a time jump. In fact, I need one. Then all will be well with the world and my shipper heart can be satisfied.
