The @nationalwomenshistoryalliance selects and publishes a yearly theme for Women's History Month and 2021's is all about capturing the spirit of the challenging times we're living through. Because of COVID-19, many of the women's suffrage centennial celebrations originally planned for 2020 were restricted, so the National Women's Alliance is extending the annual theme for 2021 to "Valiant Women of the Vote: Refusing to Be Silenced." ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Did You Know? Women’s History Month started as Women’s History Week⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Women’s History Month began as a local celebration in Santa Rosa, California. The Education Task Force of the Sonoma County (California) Commission on the Status of Women planned and executed a “Women’s History Week” celebration in 1978. The organizers selected the week of March 8 to correspond with International Women’s Day. The movement spread across the country as other communities initiated their own Women’s History Week celebrations the following year.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ In 1980, a consortium of women’s groups and historians—led by the National Women’s History Project (now the National Women's History Alliance)—successfully lobbied for national recognition. In February 1980, President Jimmy Carter issued the first Presidential Proclamation declaring the Week of March 8th 1980 as National Women’s History Week.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #WomensHistoryMonth2021 #bloodygirlgang (at Santa Rosa, California) https://www.instagram.com/p/CL7MBr6Byhq/?igshid=79z1n9nnv7lj

WOMEN'S HISTORY MONTH QUOTE 15
Tumblr media
“Empowerment looks like cultivating the wisdom to make the best choices we can out of what are customarily a piss-poor set of options. Power looks like the ability to create better options. The powerlessness and capriciousness of being repeatedly jammed up at the personal and political crossroads of one’s intersection while a watching world pretends not to see there, needing help, is how it feels to be a Black woman on an ordinary day.” – Brittney Cooper, Eloquent Rage: A Black Feminist Discovers Her Superpower

WOMEN'S HISTORY MONTH QUOTE 14
Tumblr media
“Certainly, for black women, our struggle has not been to emerge from silence into speech but to change the nature and direction of our speech, to make a speech that compels listeners, one that is heard.” – bell hooks, Talking Back: Thinking Feminist, Thinking Black

WOMEN'S HISTORY MONTH QUOTE 13
Tumblr media
“We have to teach, tell, and show Black girls that they are beautiful … that there is no standard of beauty, only defining it. And we, Black girls, define beauty, too. Our hair, shade, shape, and features are beautiful. We set trends, and the world follows.” – D.B. Mays, Black Lives, Lines, and Lyrics: Lines, Lyrics, and Laments for Black Life, Love, Loss, and Liberty

WOMEN'S HISTORY MONTH QUOTE 12
Tumblr media
Wednesday, March 20, 2024
“I am a Black woman, therefore, I am destined to protect myself. Our men have wandered too far to beckon. They are lost guardians. Thus, you learn early on how to wield your sword & hoist your shield — how to stand shoulder to shoulder with your sister in battle and wail a cry that never seems to be loud enough. And I am tired. If only I could rest. To be a Queen with no infantry is a painful sight indeed. They do not yield to my crown. How useless is my throne, if I am to continue to fight alone?” – Bethanee Epifani J. Bryant, Don’t Fall Prey! Dating Tales, Trials, & Triumphs

WOMEN'S HISTORY MONTH QUOTE 11
Tumblr media
Wednesday, March 20, 2024
“I respect you as so much bigger than my own understanding. And me too. I don’t have to be available to be eligible for breath. I don’t have to be measurable in a market of memes. I don’t have to be visible to be viable on my path. I don’t have to be shy to be sacred about my time. There are only two things I have to do, my mom taught me, and I can do them in the company of my choosing. The company of myself, my living, my dead, my folks, my dreams. 1. Stay Black. 2. Breathe.” – Alexis Pauline Gumbs, Undrowned: Black Feminist Lessons from Marine Mammals

WOMEN'S HISTORY MONTH QUOTE 10
Tumblr media
Wednesday, March 20, 2024
“Mainstream, white-centered feminism hasn’t just failed women of color, it has failed white women. It’s not making them any safer, any more powerful, or even any wiser.” – Mikki Kendall, Hood Feminism: Notes from the Women That a Movement Forgot

WOMEN'S HISTORY MONTH QUOTE 6
Tumblr media
Wednesday, March 6, 2024
“I was thinking about the need to have a feminist bookstore, a place for women to buy books about women. Because in those days, if you would go to a regular bookstore and ask about books for women, one, they would have almost nothing, two, they wouldn’t pay attention, or they would look at you like you were a weird person.” – Kristen Hogan

WOMEN'S HISTORY MONTH QUOTE 3
Tumblr media
Friday, March 1, 2024
“Considering the hatred the Hebrews felt towards the asherim, a major symbol of the female religion, it would not be too surprising if the symbolism of the tree of forbidden fruit, said to offer the knowledge of good and evil, yet clearly represented in the myth as the provider of sexual consciousness, was included in the creation story to warn that eating the fruit of this tree has caused the downfall of all humanity. Eating of the tree of the Goddess, which stood by each alter, was as dangerously ‘pagan’ as were Her sexual customs and Her oracular serpents. So into the myth of how the world began, the story that the Levites offered as the explanation of the creation of all existence, they place the advisory serpent and the woman who accepted its counsel, eating of the tree that gave her the understanding of what ‘only the gods knew’ – the secret of sex – how to create life.” – Merlin Stone, When God Was a Woman

WOMEN'S HISTORY MONTH QUOTE 1

“The feminist revolution had to be fought because women quite simply were stopped at a state of evolution far short of their human capacity.” – Betty Friedan, The Feminine Mystique

WOMEN'S HISTORY MONTH QUOTE 9
Tumblr media
Wednesday, March 13, 2024
“I am a feminist, and what that means to me is much the same as the meaning of the fact that I am Black: it means that I must undertake to love myself and to respect myself as though my very life depends upon self-love and self-respect.” – June Jordan

TW - WOMEN'S HISTORY MONTH QUOTE 8
Tumblr media
Wednesday, March 13, 2024
“In no society have women constricted men within the domestic compound or regularly battered or raped men. In no known culture, no matter how high a woman’s status, have women as a caste locked up husbands, limited their bodily freedom, or denied them a voice in group decision. Men in matrilinies do not suffer as women do in patrilinies. Matrilineality is rooted in the bond between mother and child; patrilineality is rooted in dubious assertions of ownership of women and children.” – Marilyn French, From Eve to Dawn: A History of Women in the World, Volume 1
