How Social Media Is Affecting Women & Girls – And What We Can do About It
Tumblr media
Dr. Kara Alaimo will discuss her just-published book Over the Influence: Why Social Media is Toxic for Women and Girls – And How We Can Take It Back, in conversation with Dr. Lauren Burignat-Kozol and Dr. Jingsi Christina Wu, Hofstra University. In “Over the Influence,” Alaimo reveals how social media is affecting every aspect of the lives of women, girls, and nonbinary people —from our body images to how we date to our physical and mental wellbeing — and argues that social media is making the offline world less safe for women. We will discuss how we can change this and reclaim the internet to empower ourselves, as well as what we can demand from lawmakers and tech companies in order to fix these problems.
Presented by the Hofstra Cultural Center and the Stuart and Nancy Rabinowitz Honors College
Thursday, April 18, 1-2:25 p.m. Leo A. Guthart Cultural Center Theater, Axinn Library, First Floor, South Campus
This event is FREE and open to the public. Advanced registration is required. For more info and to RSVP visit https://tinyurl.com/tue6dc4p

Cheers to International Women’s Day! 🌺 We are a day late celebrating all of the ladies and their ladles but really every day in the Vintage Kitchen is International Women’s Day around here. 🌎 With a hearty thank you, we toast the millions of women around the globe who have taught us all how to cook by sharing their culinary techniques and heritage recipes. Included here are 10 favorites in the Vintage Kitchen along with flags of the countries they represented in the kitchen. ⭐️ Some you’ll recognize, others you may not, but all made a big impact on the generations of cooks that came before us and helped inspire what and how we cook today. 🥂 . . . . . #internationalwomensday #womenshistorymonth #womenchefs #womenwhocook #vintagekitchen #womensstudies https://www.instagram.com/p/Cpk2MieO70_/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

On This Day in New York City History February 2, 1935: Dancer Anne Raven Wilkinson (February 2, 1935 – December 17, 2018) was born in New York City, New York. Wilkinson has the distinction of being the first African-American woman to dance for a major classical ballet company.
Wilkinson was born into a middle class black family in Harlem. Her father was a medical doctor and her mother a ballet dancer. Her love for ballet was born from watching a performance of the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo, a dance group that she would make history with.
Wilkinson would face difficulties in getting accepted to the Ballet Russe de Monter Carlo. Twice she was rejected before she was accepted at the age of 20 in 1955 by the director of the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo, Serge Denham.
After leaving the group in the early 1960, Wilkinson would dance with a number row groups before retiring in 1974. That would be a short lived retirement. In the same year Wilkinson would join the New York City Opera and dance for them until 1985. In her later years she would serve as mentor to Misty Copeland who was a trailblazer in her own right. Copeland was the first African American to become a principal dancer at the American Ballet Theatre.
Wilkinson passed away on December 17, 2018 at the age of 83.

On This Day in Baseball History July 5, 1898: 22-year old Lizzie Armstrong (August 31, 1877 – March 1919) would become the first woman to pitch for the Atlantic League which was a men's professional league. She came in relief during the 9th inning for the Reading Coal Heavers against the Allentown Peanuts (or Peaches as per another source.) Reading was leading 5–0 when Arlington entered the game and quickly loaded the bases on two hits and a walk. She managed to get the next three batters out to close the game out and preserve the shutout.
I've found two differing theories of why she stopped playing for the Atlantic League. One was that she was to play for the Newark franchise against Hartford. She was forbidden to play since Hartford didn't want to take a chance at losing to a team with a woman player. The other one is that once the allure of a woman baseball player wore off, she was let go by the league.
Armstrong would continue to play with barnstorming teams and other independents in a variety of leagues including the Boston Bloomers who were a women's traveling Baseball team.

It was announced today that actress Nichelle Nichols famed for playing Communication Officer Lieutenant Nyota Uhura on the original Star Trek series and subsequent movies passed away at the age of 89.
Nichols, in her portrayal of Uhura, was a role model for many African Americans. Not many African American actors could be seen on TV in such a high profile role. Even when Nichols wanted to leave, she was asked by Reverend Martin Luther King Jr to stay in the role since what the show was showing was the future for African Americans. To be equal with not only other races but other beings. Dr. King was a big fan of not only Nichols but of Star Trek as well.
Rest in Peace. Thank you for your grace throughout the years.

The Neverending Reading List: Book LI
Tumblr media
"Men Who Hate Women: From Incels to Pickup Artists: The Truth about Extreme Misogyny and How It Affects Us All" by Laura Bates
By turns fascinating and horrifying, Men Who Hate Women is a broad, unflinching account of the deep current of loathing toward women and anti-feminism that underpins our society. It is a must-read for anyone who believes in the equality of women.
Women's rights activist Laura Bates has been the target of many misogynistic attacks online, from hate-fueled Twitter rants to vivid descriptions of her own rape and even death threats. At first, the vitriol seemed to be the work of a small handful of individual men…but over time, the volume and consistency of the attacks hinted at something bigger and more ominous. As Bates followed the thread of online misogyny further into the corners of the internet, the spiral of hateful and toxic rhetoric deepened until she found an unseen, organized movement of thousands of anonymous men wishing violence (and worse) upon women—the terrorism no one is talking about. Men Who Hate Women examines the rise of secretive extremist communities who despise women as Bates traces the roots of misogyny across a complex spiderweb of groups extending from pickup artists to the incel movement. Drawing parallels to other extremist movements around the world, including white nationalism, Bates shows what attracts men to the movement, how it grooms and radicalizes boys, how it operates, and what can be done to stop it. Most urgently of all, she follows the pathways this extreme ideology has taken from the darkest corners of the internet to emerge covertly in our mainstream media, our playgrounds, and our government. Going undercover online and off, Bates provides the first comprehensive look at this under-the-radar phenomenon, including eye-opening interviews with former members of these communities, the academics studying this movement, and the men fighting back.
LAURA BATES is the founder of the Everyday Sexism Project, a crowdsourced collection of stories from women around the world about their experiences with gender equality. Laura has received the British Empire Metal in the Queen's Birthday Honours, the WMC Digital Media Award from the Women's Media Center, and the Georgina Henry prize; has been named in the BBC Woman's Hour Power List Game Changers; and has won Cosmopolitan's Ultimate Woman of the Year Award. She was also named in CNN's 10 Visionary Women List. Follow her efforts on Twitter @everydaysexism.
