Fue cofundadora de tres grupos feministas radicales de Nueva York: New York Radical Women, Redstockings y New York Radical Feminists. Es especialmente conocida por su libro La dialéctica del sexo: en defensa de la revolución feminista publicado cuando tenía 25 años, en octubre de 1970, convertido en un influyente libro en la historia del movimiento feminista. Firestone extendió las teorías marxistas de opresión de clase para ofrecer un análisis radical de la opresión de las mujeres, argumentando que la inequidad sexual surge de la carga de la maternidad, que se transfiere a las mujeres por pura casualidad biológica. El libro, fue traducido a varios idiomas y situó a Firestone a la vanguardia de las feministas de la segunda ola, junto a #BettyFriedan, #KateMillett y #GermaineGreer. #NaomiWolf dijo sobre el libro en 2012: "Nadie puede entender cómo ha evolucionado el feminismo sin leer este punto de referencia radical y provocador de la segunda ola". Poco después de escribir el libro se retiró de la vida pública. Is it a rainy day?! Do you have a good book to read?! Here in the Finger Lakes it’s feeling like a cozy comfort kind of a day. I might just curl up on an afghan or find a dry place under a tree and read the day away! After the passing of a friend I was able to share her books with many other powerful women like her. As a designer I care deeply how women feel. Usually I express that through making comfortable clothing; But I also love getting female identifying folks together for meaningful conversations in safe spaces. Gals and Goals is a group of local women we’ve held space with over the past year and a half. March brings Women’s History Month. So, for March 2024 (and every March, to be frank), I will be sharing quotes about women’s history. En 1969 publicó el artículo After Black Power, Women's Liberation que le convirtió en una líder del movimiento feminista. Junto a #BettyFriedan es una de las referentes de la llamada «segunda ola del feminismo». En 1971 fue la autora de uno de los discursos referentes del movimiento feminista de EEUU del siglo XX durante la fundación de la Asamblea Política Nacional de Mujeres: Llamamiento a las mujeres de América. En 2005 Steinem, Jane Fonda y Robin Morgan cofundaron el Women's Media Center, una organización que tiene como objetivo hacer visible a las mujeres en los medios de comunicación. En 1962 publicó un artículo sobre cómo las mujeres estaban forzadas a elegir entre su carrera y el matrimonio. En 1963 trabajó como conejita de Playboy para documentarse para un artículo, "A Bunny's Tale”. En él aparecía con el uniforme de conejita y dio a conocer las condiciones de explotación en las que vivían estas mujeres y las demandas sexuales que recibían, con frecuencia al borde de la ley. En 1969 cubrió una información sobre el aborto para el New York Magazine realizado en los sótanos de una iglesia en Greenwich, NY. Steinem había abortado en Londres a los 22. En 1972 fue cofundadora con #DorothyPitmanHughes de la revista #feminista Ms. Los 300.000 ejemplares del primer número se agotaron en 8 días. En 1972 se convirtió en la primera mujer que intervino en el Club Nacional de Prensa. En 1978 escribió el ensayo satírico «Si los hombres pudieran menstruar». En tal mundo, la menstruación se convertiría en un símbolo de honor para los hombres comparando sus sufrimientos, en lugar de la fuente de la vergüenza en el que recaía con ello sobre las mujeres. Steinem ha dicho que a los 60 años sentía que entraba en una nueva etapa de la vida libre de las «demandas de género» a las que se había enfrentado desde la adolescencia.
