“Betongkista” which translates to “concrete coffin” in Swedish, is one of the tracks from Olas Speldosa’s first album “Vridet Perspektiv” released 24/06/2022. Featuring the voice of Jonathan Hultén, who also helped with writing the lyrics and vocal melody for this beautiful song

Jonathan Hultén - The Forest Sessions - atmospheric new versions of songs from his two previous releases, with a beautiful cover of his own design

Jonathan Hultén, the darkly enigmatic Swedish Grammy-winning songwriter returns with his collection: The Forest Sessions. The new album features experimental versions of songs from the album Chants From Another Place and the EP The Dark Night of the Soul. Recorded by himself between January 2020 and June 2022, with mastering and mixing taken care of by frequent collaborator Ola Ersfjord, this is a deeply intimate work from start to finish. Hultén invites listeners into his world through the stunning album cover which he designed. Hultén draws comparisons to artists including Nick Drake, Sufjan Stevens, Wovenhand and Fleet Foxes, as well as traditional folk artists such as John Martyn right through to his contemporaries in Anna Ternheim, José Gonzales, Anna von Hausswolff Chelsea Wolfe & Hexvessel, although his work stands alone as truly original.

The new EP "Tristesse" represents the band's third release, and although the recording started during the Covid pandemic, shortly after their last LP "In Lucid" (2018), SWEEPING DEATH already made the decision to release a concept EP next with the thematic focus on the number 3.

In the beginning there was only the number, in the end a concept EP with Arthur Schopenhauer's "The World As Will And Idea" in thematic focus. Over the three songs, a journey of the lyrical I is to be described. Starting from the gloomy, cold and yet close to life first level over a transformation from within to the last, almost divine level. The number 3 as a constantly recurring concept in nature and philosophy is the anchor point of 'Tris+esse' -> word play lat. for three-being. And English/French for sadness. Musically, the claim was quite clear to write songs that work in a live context. So SWEEPING DEATH reduced the complexity and focused a lot on catchy hooks and haunting melodies. Musically, the EP has dark sides inspired by bands like Mgła, Dissection and Tribulation as well as sublime parts reminiscent of classic Heavy Metal.The artwork was designed by Eliran Kantor (Testament, Satan, Helloween ...) close to the aforementioned band idea of "trinity". So you see the transformation in three stages also graphically implemented. This time SWEEPING DEATH recorded all instruments except for the vocals on their own. So the band had full control over sound and set-up. The mixing was done by Ola Ersfjord (Tribulation, Primordial, Morbus Chron) in Madrid, Spain. The musical inspiration for singer/songwriter JONATHAN HULTÉN’s debut album Chants From Another Place is drawn from acapella folk and church choir compositions. Throughout the album, tales are weaved and musical influences collide as HULTÉN draws comparisons to artists including Nick Drake, Sufjan Stevens, Wovenhand and Fleet Foxes, as well as traditional folk artists such as John Martyn right through to his contemporaries in Anna Ternheim, José Gonzales, Anna von Hausswolff Chelsea Wolfe & Hexvessel.“The Mountain”, the album’s debut single (released 10th January), is a potent yet minimalistic ode to loss and hope. It is an inward journey and only time can tell which places will be visited under its duration. It is a tale of spiritual death and rebirth” The cover art for Chants From Another Place is a self-penned portrait, reflecting the melancholy found within the songs on the album and an insight into HULTÉN’s unique persona. Of his strange, beguiling look, which is part-inspired by Harry Clarke’s illustrations from ‘The Fall of the House of Usher’ and part a slow blossoming of HULTÉN’s own persona, he says that, “Art is self-exploration. In the long run it also leads to becoming yourself more and more. The one you are supposed to be. The everyday persona and the stage persona, by the end of the day, they are one and the same. Two sides of the same multifaceted coin. My performance is a means to achieve a union between the two. I am trying to become a better person by embracing my own weirdness. My style is manifesting by itself, following the flow of the music. It is an act of surrender and spontaneity and therefore also a conquering of fear.
