Vừa sang tháng 7, Panasonic đã phát hành hàng loạt bản firmware mới cho các mẫu máy ảnh hàng đầu hiện nay của hãng nằm trong hai dòng máy ảnh mirrorless full frame và Micro Four Thirds. Các mẫu máy ảnh cụ thể bao gồm:

• Panasonic Lumix DC-S1R; Panasonic Lumix DC-S1

• Panasonic Lumix DC-GH5; Panasonic Lumix DC-GH5S

• Panasonic Lumix DC-G9; Panasonic Lumix DC-G90/G91/G95

• Panasonic Lumix DMC-G85/G80/G81

• Panasonic Lumix DC-GX9

Chi tiết và các thay đổi của bản firmware mới như sau:

LUMIX S1R Firmware bản 1.1

1. Cải thiện thể hiện của chức năng ổn định hình ảnh Body Image Stabilizer

• Cải thiện thể hiện của Body Image Stabilizer từ 5.5 stop tối đa lên 6 stop tối đa.

• Cải thiện thể hiện của Dual I.S.2 từ 6 stop lên 6.5 stop.

2. Cải thiện khả năng AF

• Bổ sung các chức năng [AF-ON: Near Shift] và [AF-ON: Far Shift]. [AF-ON: Near Shift] tập trung lấy nét chủ thể gần, còn [AF-ON: Far Shift] tập trung lấy nét chủ thể ở xa.

• Cải thiện khả năng tracking khi dùng chế độ [Tracking] AF trong lúc quay video.

• Hiển thị live view khi lấy nét tự động giờ đây dễ xem hơn.

3. Cải thiện độ ổn định khi hoạt động

Ổn định hoạt đọng khi cải thiện thẻ nhớ XQD.

LUMIX S1 Firmware bản 1.1

1. Cải thiện thể hiện của chức năng ổn định hình ảnh Body Image Stabilizer

• Cải thiện thể hiện của Body Image Stabilizer từ 5.5 stop tối đa lên 6 stop tối đa.

• Cải thiện thể hiện của Dual I.S.2 từ 6 stop lên 6.5 stop.

2. Cải thiện khả năng AF

• Bổ sung chức năng [Read LUT File] cho phép người dùng cài đặt và áo dụng thiết lập LUT yêu thích của mình.

• Bổ sung chức năng hiển thị WFM (Waveform Monitor).

• Bổ sung chức năng điều chỉnh [Luminance Level] theo 10 bit.

• Bổ sung chức năng [XLR Mic Adaptor Setting] cho phép ghi âm phân giải cao bằng XLR Microphone Adapter DMW-XLR1 (bán lẻ).

4. Cải thiện độ ổn định khi hoạt động

Ổn định hoạt đọng khi cải thiện thẻ nhớ XQD.

1. Cải thiện khả năng tương thích với ống kính Leica DG Vario-Summilux 10-25mm f/1.7 ASPH.

Nút gạt quay phim REC trên Remote Shutter có thể tắt được trong menu custom trên máy ảnh.

1. Cải thiện khả năng tương thích với ống kính Leica DG Vario-Summilux 10-25mm f/1.7 ASPH.

I have been preparing for a possible article on the very first feature film to be shot on with the Panasonic Lumix DC-GH5S video camera and have been researching some of the other gear the director used such as an 8Sinn  camera cage, handle, rod and Metabones support.

The first version of Polish accessories maker 8Sinn did not include two eyelets for wrist straps nor provision for attaching a remote release cable to the cage-clad camera’s remote port.

Until Panasonic officially announced the GH5, I was unaware of 8Sinn, a Polish camera accessories maker, and from what I saw of their products at their website, I was impressed.

I have yet to see or try any 8Sinn accessories in real life, though, so anything I write about their products is tempered with that fact.

The first version of the 8Sinn GH5 camera cage looked intriguing with apparently high quality design and manufacturing, but the reason I did not follow up on that initial impression was it lacked provision for easily attaching camera straps and the Panasonic DMW-RSL1 remote release.

Camera cages fall into either of two camps, body-hugging wrap-around ribbons or squarer protective enclosures with makers of the latter type including Seercam and makers of the former type including 8Sinn, MovCam, SmallRig and a host of other companies around the world.

The prime virtue of body-hugging wrap-around ribbon cage designs is that they allow the cage to be attached 24/7, for use when shooting stills or video, when handheld or tripod-mounted, triggered via shutter release button or remote remote cable.

The ability to attach camera straps helps ensure better grip and security against dropping, and so I always attach two or three Peak Design camera straps to every camera I own or borrow.

Those three Peak Design camera straps are Clutch, Cuff and Slide Lite, with Clutch and Cuff permanently attached to every camera whether caged or not, and with two Slide Lite straps in reserve when I am covering events in the time-honoured two-camera, two-lenses documentary photographer manner.

I keep two Peak Design Anchor Links attached to each camera’s camera left strap attachment eyelet for when I need to attach a Slide Lite, and have slightly different Anchor Link attachment arrangements depending on the cameras’ and cages’ specific designs.

None of the Motion9, Seercam or SmallRig cages I have currently are equipped with strap eyelets so I sometimes must resort to attaching Anchor Links via the now discontinued and rather oversized predecessor to the slimmer, neater Peak Design Anchor Mount.

The 8Sinn cage for GH5 and GH5S, version 2, with built-in eyelets and CNCed indent for remote release cable access is an elegant solution for attaching Peak Design Clutch and Cuff, and the Panasonic DMW-RSL1 Remote Shutter Release as well as third-party alternatives.

8Sinn Universal Lens Support 15mm

Whether assembled into a complete cage-based rig for GH5 or GH5S, audio adapter and Metabones-adapted non-native lens, or something much smaller, version 2 of 8Sinn’s GH5/GH5S camera cage is an intriguing choice given it has now solved the two problems found in version 1 and I hope to see and try it out for myself sometime soon.

No sooner had Panasonic announced its amazing Lumix DC-S5 35mm sensor-equipped L-mount compact hybrid stills/video camera than SmallRig released details of its SmallRig Cage for Panasonic S5 Camera 2983, in preorder at a discount at time of writing.

I always recommend investing in SmallRig products when in preorder aka late development stage in order to take advantage of their preorder discounts not to forget their attractive non-discount pricing compared to other camera accessories makers.

The S5 cage can be purchased alone or in a package including one or more of the following: Monitor Mount with ARRI Mount 2903, HDMI Cable Clamp 1679, Arri Locating Handle 2165 and Wooden NATO Side Handle 2187.

For those of us who enjoy using cameras with vertical battery grips attached, no doubt SmallRig has a suitable cage in the works right now, perhaps soon to appear in the Co-design page.

“Atomos is delighted to announce that as soon as it ships, the new Panasonic LUMIX S1 full-frame mirrorless camera will immediately be able to record 4k (3840×2160) 10-bit 422 HDR footage to the Atomos Ninja V and Inferno monitor/recorders. Recording over HDMI to one of these Atomos recorders will allow recording direct to Apple ProRes or Avid DNx codecs at up to 4kp30 in the HLG HDR format. HDR metadata passed over HDMI from the Panasonic LUMIX S1 to the Ninja V or Inferno allows the HLG signal to be correctly displayed, giving the users an instant and accurate HDR image they can expose and trust. The metadata triggers auto-setup of the Atomos recorders, and the same data is written into the ProRes or DNx file for instant playout to compatible HDR televisions and monitors, or upload to YouTube.

Panasonic will also add 10-bit 422 HDMI output in V-Log gamma via a paid firmware update to the camera in the future. This version of the gamma curve will be the full V-Log, rather than the V-Log L variant found on the GH5 and GH5S. Atomos will record this and are working with Panasonic to fully support the additional options that the upcoming firmware will bring.

The Panasonic LUMIX S1 is the latest in a growing number of large sensor mirrorless cameras to support 4k 10-bit 422 recording via HDMI. The increased image quality brings greater flexibility in post-production for better HDR or SDR images. Stepping up to 10-bit offers greater accuracy with billions of color combinations. This is massively beneficial when utilising computer processing for finishing. Typically, users will see smoother color gradients, eliminating the commonly seen banding in areas with gradual tone change such as blue skies. Recording to an Atomos recorder perfectly preserves this information in the ultimate way possible, combining Panasonic and Atomos technology.

The Panasonic LUMIX S1 has an ergonomic body design that is perfectly partnered with the 5” Atomos Ninja V HDR monitor/recorder. The Ninja V weighs 360g and sits perfectly on top of the camera. When the two are used together they balance well in the hand, forming an easy to operate camera setup that rivals some traditional cinema cameras.

High bright 1000nit or 1500nit monitoring

Seeing the built-in screen of all mirrorless cameras is difficult in bright conditions. The Ninja V screen has 1000nit of brightness when in SDR mode, allowing it to be used effectively, even when outside. The Ninja Inferno and Shogun Inferno each offer an incredible 1500nit brightness and are well suited to productions where a larger 7” screen is required.

Why external recording makes sense

External recording via HDMI from mirrorless cameras is perfect for users wanting to get the best possible image quality from cameras like the Panasonic LUMIX S1. Until this year users needed to invest in a high-end cinema camera costing ten of thousands of dollars to get a larger than Super35 sized sensor that offered 4K 10-bit 422 recording. Now, with the advent of cameras like the LUMIX S1 combined with the Ninja V, users can have access to just that but at amazing price points – in this case less than $2500 US MSRP for the LUMIX S1 body and $695 MSRP for the Ninja V.

In addition, by moving recording to an external Atomos recorder like the Ninja V, mirrorless cameras are freed of many of their key video limitations. Record time limits are lifted and easy-to-edit Apple ProRes or Avid DNx codecs recorded, instead of harder to edit H.264 or H.265. When recording video with the Panasonic LUMIX S1 and Ninja V you can shoot to the new generation of Atomos AtomX SSDmini drives or Atomos Master Caddy II drives. These are developed with leading brands and offer high speed and high reliability in a compact metal chassis at a highly affordable cost per GB.
