IT'S DONE!!! 🥳 My new Phantom tailsuit is complete and on its way to the UK!
Just completely in awe of what @ajmachete (IG) and his Denver Bespoke @vigilantelabs (IG) team have created for me! AHHHH!!!!! 🤩😳🤩🥰🤩
This suit is inspired by 90s era Phantom suits on Broadway. All the fabrics were sourced to provide the best possible match to the authentic stage fabrics. Anyone who has researched for the Phantom's suit knows the iconic patterned silk is prohibitively expensive and impossible to obtain. Finding a fabric that gives the same effect is incredibly difficult, but I think we found a great substitute! In fact, stumbling onto this fabric was the entire inspiration for this commission in the first place.
I contacted AJ earlier this year about constructing a new suit for my Phantom of the Opera cosplay. Immediately, I knew I made an excellent choice. He and his team made the whole process smooth. They are top professionals in their craft, and it is evident in this exquisite result. If you need any bespoke tailoring done for your cosplay, or if you have an idea for a cool everyday garment, please give AJ and his team a look!
Thank you AJ for this amazing piece of art! 🥰
I cannot wait to receive the suit and don the mask for the first time in nearly three years. I am so excited for the upcoming conventions, photoshoots, and shenanigans with the @the_phananigans (IG) in/around London! ❤️🇬🇧
I also hope to use this new version of the cosplay to highlight some of our outstanding artists in the Phantom community. Standby for future collaborations. 😎

Can we all take a second to appreciate all the work that goes into displaying the Phantom’s main costume?
Moulins, France 2018-2019 (West End costume)
Manila, The Philippines / World Tour
Oberhausen, Germany
Hong Kong / World Tour (with Brad Little)
Istanbul, Turkey / World Tour
Hong Kong / World Tour
Florida / Restaged US Tour (OK, unorthodox shoes, but still)
Hamburg, Germany
Los Angeles / Restaged US Tour
See, when putting a man’s suit on display - especially one tailor made for a specific person - it is SO much work. The dummy doesn’t only need to fit in the torso, as is often the case with women’s dresses. No, it needs to be the right length, height, width, arms and shoulders, hips, butt. And if the dummy isn’t right, you need to pad. And cheat. And you need all the accessories, like shirt, bowtie, shoes, hat. And for the Phantom also the mask, my God the MASK.
Thus, mounting a multi-piece suit notoriously takes longer than basically anything else. Ever wondered why you often see Red Death or a random ensemble costume on display instead of the Phantom’s suit? Because of this. Ever wondered why there’s more women’s dresses in museums than men’s clothes? Because of this. (well, and related, because chances are bigger that a one or two piece dress survives than a men’s attire consisting of maybe five, six, seven pieces that could be mixed and matched and would have wore out at different times)
Above is some of my favourite examples of well-exhibited Phantom attires. Where the tailcoat and trousers looks right on the dummy, where accessories like bowtie, shirt and shoes has been included, and if the dummy also have a head, often the fedora and mask as well. They’ve managed to capture the suave or menancing aura of the Phantom. And I know how much work that is, so hooray for these.
Bonus: some exhibition texts:
“Silk tailsuit worn by The Phantom. For an elegant man of his time, after the sun goes down, this was normal attire. Two-piece tailsuit of woven patterned silk. Silk faille waistcoat, shirt and silk bow tie.“ (Restaged US Tour 2014)
“White shirt, a bowtie, black waistcoat, silk tailcoat & trousers. Black beaded cape. Black Fedora hat & mask. Scene: Christine’s dressing room & Phantom Lair. The Phantom wears a traditional evening tail suit and cape with a Fedora hat. This was considered the height of elegant fashion in Europe at the time. The mask he wears onstage covers half of his face so that he can conceal his disfigurement. The black silk in his suit comes from the United Kingdom and is used for all Phantom suits worldwide. The tailcoat has silk lapels and a silk velvet collar and the cape is fine wool with antique jet beading.” (Istanbul 2015)

The big reveal of my newly upgraded 2023 Phantom of the Opera Cosplay! With my upcoming 20th anniversary as Phantom on a Budget, I decided to not only continue my cosplay career, but also double down by improving both my makeup and costume. For the first time in my career, I applied the bald cap to myself for the Final Lair look, complete with "alopecia" wig.
Makeup supplies include Mel Products vinyl/plastic bald cap blendedwith acetone, slip latex prosthetics by Studio D FX, Telesis 8 silicone adhesive, Skin Illustrator flesh tone pallette, Kryolan rubber mask grease paint, Kryolan TV Paintstick (3W), Make Up For Ever contour, Ben Nye translucent powder, and Kryolan finishing spray.
The brand new, custom Phantom tailsuit was completed by AJ Machete and its design is closely inspired by the early Broadway production.

What's your favorite costume in the show?
Great question!  So many to choose from.
If I had to pick one, I have to go with the Phantom’s classic tailsuit.  I just love love love that elegant look (and it’s just as fun to walk around in).  But another favorite of mine has always been Carlotta’s red dress from Notes II.  Ann Runolfsson’s dress from the Third National Tour in the early 2000′s was my absolute favorite version of this dress.  I loved the red/dark red striped fabric!

Phantom on a Budget - Second Tailcoat Fitting
Photos of the second fitting for the tailcoat mockup (third fitting for the waistcoat and trousers) for my upcoming Phantom replica tail suit by enchantedseastudio.  Mockups are done in muslin to perfect the fit before the final costume is cut from the actual materials.  Check out the post on the first tailcoat fitting and to see info on how actual stage costumes are produced.
Just want to highlight enchantedseastudio ( kaedralynn ) for her awesome work with this costume!  She is kicking major ass on this project despite incomplete tailcoat patterns and other factors that have been overcome.  I highly recommend her to anyone looking to commission a POTO costume!  :)
