October 2022 Mangum Dental Hike-of-the-Month Williams Peak, Prescott Arizona

Distance: 6.4 miles

Difficulty: Moderate due to distance and terrain

Elevation: 761 feet (6025′ - 6703′)

Directions: From Yavapai County Courthouse drive west on Gurley Street for 1.5 miles, the road curves slightly left and becomes Thumb Butte Road. Continue an additional 3.6 miles on Thumb Butte Road to the intersection with Camp Willow Springs/Dugan Camp Road.  The parking area and trailhead are on the northeast corner of this intersection.  

Parking: White Rock Trailhead off Thumb Butte Road is a dirt parking lot with no facilities and no water.

Summary

In the late summer of 2022, the Prescott National Forest looks as green as Ireland, and Miller Creek is running effortlessly like a herd of fine horses. The Williams Peak Loop west of town touts wildflowers, beautiful views of Williams Peak, and runs along Miller Creek for over a mile.  Other highlights of this hike included the sunset, a rainbow, and wildlife.  There were a few others enjoying the trail including mountain bikers, hikers, trail runners, and frisbee golfers.  

The hike head east out of the parking lot on trail #738. Almost immediately the trail crosses forest road 47 and continues east.  The first mile is slightly uphill with decomposed granite surface that is flat and easy. The tall ponderosa pine trees surround the trail like sentinels standing guard.  There are a number of oaks sprinkled between and likely stunning in the fall.  After a mile, cross Deering Park Road and shortly the trail splits.  This hike will detail a clockwise direction.  Here there is a disc-golf course and at the two-mile mark, Miller Creek was rushing down the mountain.  The beauty of the creek was a companion crossing it a number of times over the next 1.25 miles.  Then the trail gains some elevation before reaching the top of the hill.  Along this stretch, there are views of Williams Peak and Porter Mountain.  The panorama along the top adds variety to the hike.  Near the top, there is a connecting trail to West Spruce Trail (#264). Go right to stay on the loop.  The trail down in elevation is washed out and rocky.  Hike down off the hill, finish the loop and hike the last mile back to the parking area.

An alternative suggestion is to park at the junction of trail #738 and Deering Park Road (1/4 mile past White Rock Trailhead and right on Deering Park Road for 1/4 mile).  There is a pull-out there and signs. One could even hike to the most beautiful part along Miller Creek and hike back for a 3-4 mile hike.  Be aware of the mountain bikers on this trail. There is space for everyone.
