My history with Tales of Graces f:

Played it for the first time during the summer of 2020 (yup mid pandemic)

I'd been wanting a PS3 for years in order to play the console-locked Tales games on it in chronological order

So when I was very kindly given a refurbished one as a birthday gift I immediately went out and bought Graces f from an online retro game site (only roughly $20 usd iirc)

The sister who I live w now watched me play part of it but didn't seem terribly impressed so I never offered to play it with her (we did go on to play Zestiria, Xillia 1 & 2 and now Berseria though)

I had to jump up several times during cutscenes to stop our new puppy from eating the chair I was sitting in 😅

Graces brainrot got me through a lot of the miserable confusion that was COVID lockdown

Like I distinctly recall having a mental breakdown at work and taking a much needed day off, which I spent entirely stuffing my face with Little Debbie Oatmeal Cream Pies and playing the Rockgagong part of the story

I beat the main story on my first day back in college. My roommate switched to online schooling so I had the whole apartment to myself to play Lineage and Legacies and yell at the screen whenever the dumb teenagers talked about marriage again

I started what would become my long fic on October 6 2020. It was just an idea at the time but soon became a coping mechanism for what I now recognize as a bit of a depression spell. Probably where the constant angst came from originally but now I just like it.

I have yet to play a new game+ but I want to. If I can get the executive function gods to cooperate then I probably will sometime this year

Although I've only played it once, I have watched a full let's play and part of a friend's stream (hi pav 👋). I've also rewatched the cutscenes from Lineage and Legacies like at least 4 times because they're short and easy to binge

I've also watched the original ending a worrying number of times 😅

I've already made the joke about the best way to experience it being "on a dying ps3 in the middle of summer ten years ago" but the real answer is pc with a controller. kbam is okay, but it's definitely a controller game

there's a few texture refurbishing mods, along with one to reimplement the JP voice acting (highly recommend it, even though the english dub has some real highlights, especially with Grigori)

make sure to grab this to get the full original console experience, where the title screen theme is an incredible anime opening

as a quirk of the game, there's only one save file. the thing is, obeying this isn't authentic to the console experience, where you'd just make another profile to get around it. use the save manager if you want to do that

if you really can't stand the shaders but want to preserve the aesthetic, check out Reforged 2 (an enb)

hey sorry if this is weird, i sent the anon to another blog about struggling to see ps3 and xbox 360 as retro & i just saw your comments on it which rly made me consider my own position. I'm 24 but come from a poor background so I had hand-me-down everything & when the ps4 came out the ps3 in my head was still "super expensive modern console" to the point ive p much never played on one still today, so seeing comments from people a bit older than me with my perspective is interesting ya know

For me personally, anything that is 20 years old and older is retro for me because of my age and I think that we as a society tend to forget that the 90s was 30 years ago which is a fairly long time lol.

However, what I've noticed is because of these dated items, they are priced higher than you would think. I just went on a website and an NES {the original Nintendo} is priced between $135 {for the system and one controller} to $280 {for the system, two controllers and 3 games} and these are REFURBISHED. I think anything sold cheaper is either not working, or works, but very poorly.

Same goes for the other older systems. Like, yeah, they're getting sold at about half the price of these newer systems, but there are people out there willing to spend that money for them. Would I personally spend that money on an NES now? No and my reasoning is simply because it doesn't have a memory card and if you get far in a game and the power goes out? You're FUCKED.

Yes and no. You can play those games from the PS2 and PS3 era. However, you can only play them digitally. The console cannot read the physical copies, so you have to get the game digitally. However, in order for you to get the game digitally, you need to pay, at the minimum, $17 dollars a month to have a premium account.

In the long run, it's probably just cheaper to get your PS2 or PS3 refurbished or get used ones.
