I really like the warped perspective on these paintings. It captures the twisting and turning nature of stairs and you can feel the scale and height of it.

SAM SZAFRAN - L’obsession de la peinture, au Musée de l’Orangerie.

Trois ans après la mort de Sam Szafran (1934-2019), le Musée de l'Orangerie a organisé la première exposition sur l'artiste par un musée français depuis deux décennies.

Les sujets de Szafran étaient peu nombreux - ateliers, escaliers et feuillages - mais cela est contrebalancé par une fièvre d'expérimentation envoûtante, qui fonctionne comme une ancre jetée dans l'histoire de l'art.

Artiste autodidacte à la curiosité inépuisable, il s'initie au pastel puis à l'aquarelle, champs d'exploration artistique qu'il poursuit ardemment.

Szafran défie le regard du spectateur, déforme et déconstruit la perspective. Avec le temps, celles-ci s'ouvrent, se fragmentent pour donner naissance à des visions éclatées où les plans de temporalité sont multipliés et où les espaces se combinent et se confrontent, symboles d'un ordre à jamais perdu.

Une expérience passionnante, troublante et étonnamment intense.
