authors note: i was rewatching not only the show but also parts of the game and couldn’t get over how beautiful the city was. i am absolutely putting myself into this because i am in love with the cities in tlou. this is short and sweet but i really wanted to get something out for yall for the holidays <3

“From this point you just keep your head down and follow my lead. You got that?”

“Joel I literally help you sell this shit, I think I can wrap my head around how dangerous this–”

“Not until you’ve been out there.” He cut you off. His voice was stern but not mean and by his extreme look you would think he would mean that in a mean way. But you’ve known him for too long to know that this was far from his version of mean. Looking down at both of your dirty and very worn shoes before your eyes looked back up to him. “Okay,” You gave him a small nod, knowing that he was doing all this to make sure he was keeping good on his promise. “Okay.” He repeated before leading the way down the tunnel. Glancing over his shoulder ever so often to make sure you were still following but that you were also staying close. The sewer tunnel was what you would think one would smell like. Which was god awful. The fear of getting caught took up the front part of your brain. The punishment for getting caught leaving the walls was public hanging. The same punishment was also for disbursing contraband which is what you help them with so either way you’re fucked.

Helping sell the contraband wasn’t even his idea. It originally was Tess’s, she suggested you because of you approachability. Along with the fact of knowing your fair share of people. The guys insisted that they had to be nearby in case someone tried to pull one over the two of you. Which resulted in a few broken noses, ribs, and (or) shoulder. 

“We’re reaching the exit, so this is gunna be the most dangerous part.” He warned as the two of you walked towards the blue light growing with each step. You couldn’t help but smile at the sight, feeling your body grow with glee. 

The track through the exit took longer than the actual journey to it. Having to wait out on different sounds of trucks driving past. And staying out of the bright spot light that swept the area. But you made it. Losing counts of the time Joel had his hand out across you after hearing voices. The sight of the skyscraper and the busted up roads made it all worth it. Even though it was pitch black outside with only the two of yall’s flashlights and the small shine of the half moon it was still breathtaking. The rooftops could only allow you to see so much over the QZ’s walls. It was ecstasy how you thought it would be, just adding more greenery and overgrowth than you realized but it was still amazing. 

“We’ll spend the night in the hotel tonight and in the morning make the track to Bill and Franks.” Joel explained as the two of you jogged up the steps. He held the door open for you as you stepped inside. Shining your light all around the room. Landing on the floor being flooded seeing it almost reaching the bottom part of the countertop. 

“How deep is this?” You asked looking over your shoulder. He walked to your side, his shoulder pushing up against yours. Your light was shining down on the muddy murky water. He scoffed lightly before taking a step down the small four steps and walking into the water. Turning back towards you with a smug smile, “Not that deep,” He remarked holding his hand out for you. A small smile crept onto your face reaching forward and taking his hand. Using it to keep your balance while your feet shaklee felt their way down the few steps. Reaching his side and your smile grew as you shined your light upwards. Seeing the different levels, the different decorations, the broken parts of the railing on the second floor. “I could never afford to stay in a place like this,”

“Me neither,” He replied, looking at you in a way he hasn’t looked at anyone in a long time. The look of complete ‘aw’ in your eyes and your smile that was infectious. 

The two of you made it up to the higher levels finding one of the rooms that still had a mattress, and the door was still on its hinges. Using the decaying and watered damaged dresser to block the door. Taking the curtains that were on the floor (still on the rod) and laying it down on the musty mattress. Pulling out each of their blankets they had packed and going to sleep. Joel was the last one to fall asleep just sat upright watching as your chest raised and fall. The comforting feeling knowing that you were sleeping peacefully next to help helped him actually fall asleep. It being the first time he woke up and realized that he had slept through the night. The bright sun was already piercing its way in, the reason he woke up in the first place. Rubbing his hand over his eyes before letting it fall beside him. Panic feeling his body not being able to feel you anywhere around him. His eyes shot open as wide as they could, his body shot upwards looking around the room.

His tense body quickly left, letting out a small breath as his eyes landed on you. Sat on top of the desk you had moved towards the smashed out window. Using one of the old pillows as a cushion to sit on the window seal.

“How long have you been awake?”

You turned over towards him, giving him a soft smile. “I saw the sunrise!” You beamed looking back out the window. Joel let out a small scoff, you weren’t a morning person and yet seeing the sunrise was like the highlight of your life. “It’s different than seeing it at QZ. The moment when the sun is slowly making its way up and covering the whole sky with pale blue. That is my sunrise.”

While Joel was listening to you, he was getting out of bed and walking over towards you. Leaning his right shoulder into the wall so he was facing you. “Why is it different from the QZ?” He already knew the answer because he had been outside on countless trips. But he wanted to see you explain it. Knowing it would cause your eyes to have a small sparkle in them. The small sparkle appeared every time you expressed something that meant a lot to you. 

You turned towards him. Pressing your lips together, crossing your legs over one another to face him properly. “The building have smashed out windows, and broken parts of ceilings, flooring, and walls. I mean the ground is broken apart because of the fauna. I mean it’s actually quite stunning how the earth is reclaiming itself. The different ways the vines and grass grow as if to cover the buildings and everything around it! I find it in a ironic and poetic way.... What?”

He shook his head lightly, “Nothing..” He trailed off staring down at the one person who gave him something to smile about.

All the Myths of Multi-Level Marketing (MLM) Busted!

History of Multi-Level Marketing (MLM) Multi-Level Marketing (MLM) or Network Marketing is a fast-growing phenomenon. Anyone, anywhere can become a distributor and earn an income from building the network without having to sacrifice any other occupation. No additional investment into this business is required. That makes it very attractive for people from all walks of life. They attempt to join the network. It is estimated that in the US alone over 70 percent of the Direct Selling Revenues come from MLM. Worldwide, about 50 million people ate connected to MLM. There is no documented history of MLM. People reckon that this started with ‘Nutralite’ or formerly known as California Vitamin Company which produced food supplements. In the early 1940s, the Company used Direct Selling. Distributors discovered that they were generating more sales for the Company by referring their friends and known people to the business opportunity available with Nutralite. There was no system in place to recognize and reward the distributors for recruiting other distributors for the business. The system of paying 2 percent bonus to the sponsoring distributor on the sales that were achieved by the distributor and the network that he sponsored or built was presented. This was the start of modern-day ‘Pyramid Selling.’ Nutralite achieved extraordinary growth and profits in the following decades. All this was due to a fast-growing network not only in the US but across other continents too. In the early 1960s, Richard DeVos and Jay Van Andel, who were the Distributors of Nutralite broke away to build their own company. It grew to become the MLM business ever called ‘Amway’. It started with household and cleaning products and went on to buy Nutralite Company. It merged the food supplement products into its portfolio. A distributor named Dr. Forrest C Shaklee too broke away from Nutralite at the same period that ‘Amway’ was born. He founded the new Company named Shaklee dealing with natural sunshine products. Currently, hundreds of businesses practice Pyramid selling or MLM. Many brands such as Avon, Tupperware, Electrolux, Discovery Toys, Herbal Life, Kleenex, Oriflamme, Reliv, etc. have been growing their business globally using this notion of sales. Though there are a lot of criticisms and charges levied against this system. The real figures tell us that the concept has been successful in the growth of more businesses in recent years. The Direct Selling Association of the US reported that about 25 % of its members engaged in MLM in the 1990s. In 2009, it was found that over 94% of the members had been practicing this method. This contributed to about 97% of the total Direct Sales. The figures show progressive trends. Companies often promote testimonials from people who have become millionaires in the business. Many governments have raised questions about the authenticity of the pyramid compensation method. They think that it is a faulty model. The income generation does not happen due to sales of the product. It is because of the recruitment of distributors. In China, this has been banned since 1998. The trade is growing unprecedentedly all over the rest of the world. Is MLM an Opportunity for Anyone and Everyone? Everywhere you go, you are bound to find someone connected to a network of MLM. Lon-lost friends will call you to rekindle that old relationship, just for the sake of the network. Housewives, students, professionals, bankers, teachers, and retired persons do a lot of Pyramid Selling or MLM. For people who do not know, this concept might be puzzling as well as interesting. The marketers just want to sit with you, so that they can explain the concept, and are able to entice you to join the network somehow. It does not matter if you are a student or a retired person. MLM is bound to work for you. Many people join the network, for a lot of reasons. MLM is for Anyone and Everyone Anyone can join the network. Age, qualification, profession, and experience are no barriers. There are people with no business history or financial support having made their millions with MLM. They have not had any education or financial backup. It is sheer persistence and consistency that helped them reach dizzying heights. Many special and disabled people have found MLM an easier method to become self-sufficient and self-reliant. This method gives a common man a chance to dream, and become a millionaire. There is no ceiling to your earning. You earn as much as you perform. There are real-world cases of people who made millions with MLM. This shows that your goals are doable. No Investment Business When someone tells you that there is a business that can be done without any investment, the returns are immediate, you will most probably not believe him.  There is inventory to keep, no space to retain, no shop to sell, nothing at all is required. You do not have to give up on your job or career. The potential to earn is unlimited. No Risk Business People are averse to taking risks. MLM is virtually risk-free. No financial investment is needed. In most of the business models, you don’t need to hold inventories or products. If you choose to do so, the business would buy back in case you cannot sell. The only expense is a small fee for a starter kit. This way, you can build a risk-free business on your imagination and sheer hard work. MLM attracts all sorts of people, from all walks of life. The way MLM works MLM is going beyond borders like a huge wave. Everyone who hears the network-joining pitch is going to be perplexed and wonder if it is all true. People will ask about their realistic chances of making the kind of money that is shown in the pitch literature. Let us see how it works: Sign-up Some will approach you. He’s an existing distributor. He is trying to recruit you. On Signing up you will be bound by contract with the principal company for whom you will be selling. The distributor becomes your sponsor. You will undergo extensive training by the sponsor or the business on the product lines as well as on selling methods. A small amount is ($100) for a starter kit to know all. Retail Selling In MLM, you need to have 2 agendas. The first would be to buy the products for you and your family’s consumption. At this stage, you see that if you make a purchase of $100 per month, you will be entitled to a rebate of 15%. You save 15%. Besides buying products for yourself, you might purchase for your family and friends and build up your sales volumes. As you increase the sales volume, your discounts also keep increasing. These are as per the slabs and you can end up claiming up to 45% discounts on a case-to-case basis. Recruiting & Building Distributor Network The time now is for recruiting other distributors under you. When you sign up someone, you become their sponsor. As you develop your network, you earn income from the sales generated by your distributors down the line. This is in the form of incentives, discounts, bonuses, and royalties. You have five distributors who place $500 worth of orders with you. You will be buying the products from your sponsor at a discount of 30% and each of your distributors will buy from you at 20%. So, you make 10% on each transaction. When your network grows, the business volumes of your distributors grow. Their networks under them grow and gain by higher slab discounts. There comes a saturation point and then it is time to buy directly from the company. It may seem easy, but it is painstaking work. You will need a lot of dedicated time to do this. This is when to choose whether to pursue MLM on a full-time basis. Those who have persevered have yielded results. Variations of MLM Schemes The concept of MLM involves sales and distribution of products through distributors. They buy for self-use and focus on recruiting and distributors under them. This is to make sales happen automatically when each of the distributors buys products for self-use and furthers the recruitment and the network. A lot of criticism, cynicism and unfair trading charges have been leveled against MLM. MLM companies have been members of Direct Selling Agents Associations and have been compliant with the Trade regulations and systems as set up by the authorities for the mentioned system. Companies focusing on quality products have benefitted a lot from MLM. It is only the quality of the product that entices people to become distributors. They also buy the product for their own use. Trained Distributors can create higher business volumes through the network. Variations of the MLM Concept Several concepts or variations of MLM networks exist. There have been schemes where networks of distributors have been established for selling not one company’s products but to provide a catalog of products. These products are from various Companies. They invite distributors to buy those products that they find useful and needful. The catalog is circulated like a periodical. Subscription is charged when the distributors subscribe to it. Distributors get a discount on the catalog. This system sounds too good to be true. Sometimes, these businesses are unable to deliver what they promise, in terms of product quality, training, and guarantees, etc. This way the whole system can go rudderless. Chain Letters Hot on the trails of MLM, have been assorted concepts making rounds in different countries at different times. One such scheme is the concept of Chain Letter Network, where you receive a letter asking you to send a small amount like 5$ to the five persons listed in the letter and then copies incorporating your name on top of the list and send it out to others with the same instructions. When the people read your letter, they send you the 5$ and circulate more letters adding their names to the list. One keeps getting money till the network is expanding. This is a money-making scheme only. Such schemes do not yield any real income in the long run. No trading is involved. Enough people join in and the scheme keeps going on. Many different versions exist. Most of them conform to the trade regulations of their countries too. Such schemes may work in theory. They are based on multiplier effects. Morally and ethically, the schemes will not gain traction from the community at large. Before investing, you must know the MLM scheme in detail. Caring for a child with addiction

One woman’s story on finding joy.

Moyra’s Story

Moyra and I met at a business dinner held last year at La Jolie MLN. It was a well-attended event, and each woman got the chance to give a bit of her background and talk about her business. It’s the way relationships are made, and the mix of talent was impressive.

A year later, our mutual friend Daisy Malek-Shadid, owner of La Jolie MLN, put us in touch so that I could interview Moyra for this story. It turns out we have something in common. I have 40 years of sobriety in AA, and Moyra has been playing a key role in her daughter’s fight with an eating disorder.

First a little background.

A retired nurse, Moyra has been working for the past 23 years as a wellness ambassador for Shaklee Corporation, a leading name in natural nutritional supplements. “I chose Shaklee,” she told me “because, although I wanted to work in the health industry, most supplements are unregulated and market themselves as “all natural’, although that is often not the case. Shaklee is different. They do clinical trials on every product they offer. And they have a chain of custody that goes all the way from raw materials to finished products. Shaklee is the one company that can - and does - make the claim ‘We are beyond organic.’”

How did you come to face addiction?

“Throughout the last 22 years, we’ve had four children; three boys and a girl. At 16 our daughter developed an eating disorder. It was a huge threat to us as a family; she would cycle in and out of treatment centers, and frankly, we didn’t know if she was going to live. As a mom with a long career in healthcare, it seems like a cruel irony. Why was this happening to us?

The statistics on eating disorders are frightening:

The most common age of onset is 12 to 25

Anorexia and bulimia affect about 2-3 percent of all women

Individuals who fall victim to these diseases tend to be perfectionistic, sensitive to criticism, and self-doubting

50 to 75% of patients eventually recover

Coping with an eating disorder

For Moyra, coping with her daughter’s condition ultimately demanded that she set boundaries. “That,” said Moyra “meant taking care of myself…actually putting myself first for a change.”

Moyra loved being a mom. “We had a schedule on the pantry door that listed all the games and swim meets, but when my daughter was overtaken by her addition, it absorbed my whole being. I was in a world of hurt. Friends said ‘You need to do something for yourself.’” And when I did that, it helped my daughter too.”

Dancing for joy

I decided to take ballroom dance lessons. It was something I watched on TV, and I loved the grace and fun of it. So, I thought why not? Lessons became a couple-of-times-a-week thing that soon turned into competitions. Very recently, I did a dance competition that was a combination of tango and cha-cha. My daughter came to watch, and when I got home, she said, “Mom, you’re killing it; you’re out there smiling and shaking your hips…I could feel the joy. I’m so proud of you.”

Moyra added, “Here’s something I learned. Boundaries let us set a living example of going for a full life. Over the years I’ve grown. As my daughter began to recover, she wrote me letters saying that as I found joy, it was an inspiration to her. I know now that there was nothing I could do until she was ready to help herself.”

Seeking help

Dancing brought me joy, but I used Al Anon, a 12-Step program to help me understand addiction and embrace a set of tools. I learned:

Get off the roller coaster; it’s your daughter’s experience

Learn all you can about eating disorders

Get a therapist for your daughter and one for yourself. This is essential to break the toxic codependency

Today

My daughter is doing well today. She lives one day at a time, has the support of a great therapist, and works her own program.

As a result of everything I’ve learned, I started a podcast called “Your Journey to Joy.” I believe it’s there everyone. Sometimes it’s the joy of dance, a good therapist, and learning how to let go. I also found great recovery in journaling. I recommend this to anyone on the journey to recovery. For me it was a life saver.
