Mind Mirror (Part 1)

Summary: Sometimes Regina has days where she can't stand the sight of herself. It is nothing new, really. But this time is different. This time the feelings don't go away. This time the feelings get worse until she can't untangle her own distortions of herself from her actual self.

“Well, how does this one look?” Emma asks. “Does it pass the fancy dinner party standard?”

“It looks wonderful dear. Red suits you.” Regina nods. The color red and the way that the plain silk hugs her frame. The simplicity of the dress is perhaps part of its charm.

“Great, because I didn’t want to have to change a fifth time.”

“Then you shouldn’t try to wear jeans or sweatpants to a formal event. And you should check for holes.” She quirks a brow. “You should be thankful that I caught those ones.” She quirks a brow.

“What about you, madam mayor? What are you going to be wearing?”

Regina rises from the bed and wanders over to her closet. “I haven’t decided yet, would you like to help me pick something out?”

“God, Regina, your wardrobe is huge! It’s almost overwhelming.” She slaps her hands against her thighs.

“The price of being a…”

“Girlboss?” Emma cuts in.

“Never say that again, Swan.” Regina mutters. She pulls a few hangers and tosses them on the bed. There is a simple black cocktail dress with strappy sleeves as well as one of a similar fashion but with a shimmer of sequins for some extra ritz. And then there is a crimson dress that will fall to her calves, it is trimmed with faux black gemstones. And then there is the cream colored dress with a sophisticated lacy high collar and the genuine black diamond buttons.

Each one is a respectable choice in its own right. Of course, Emma’s eyes fall on the fourth dress. The deep green two piece made of velvet fabric; a pencil skirt and a long sleeved jacket. Under it she would wear a black blouse.

“I feel like that one is more of a business brunch suit.” She remarks as she hangs it back up.

“Alright, then wear the cream one.” Emma shrugs. “Honestly, you could pull the sheets off your bed and make it work.”

“Or make a fool of the both of us.” Regina rolls her eyes. She pulls the cream dress off of the hanger and holds it against her chest.

Emma elbows her with a laugh. “Stop admiring and actually put the dress on.”

Regina quirks a brow. “Who said that I’m admiring? Maybe I’m just…”

“If I looked like you, I would.”

And there it is, that little blush that always seems to bloom on her cheeks. The blush that Emma seems to get a kick out of inducing. She swats the savior’s arm as she passes. She unbuttons and shrugs her shirt off. Emma’s hands wrap around her waist and the woman presses a kiss to her back. Her face reddens further. “Not now Swan, we’re going to be late!”

“Awww, come on.” She pouts, jabbing her in the ribs. “We still have like ten minutes.” She presses the next kiss to her neck.

“And it takes me at least that long to get ready. We’ll have plenty of time when we get home.”

Emma groans but Regina feels her arms slide away and hears her flop onto the mattress.

“Help me with the zipper?”

And she springs back up. “Sure thing, Regina.”

Emma takes a step back and Regina smooths her hands over the dress. “Well, let's get to it then.”

“So what’s this dinner party for again?”

Regina sighs. “We’ve been over this three times now.”

“And I’ve forgotten three times now!” Emma throws her hands up as Regina fishes her keys out of her pockets.

“It’s to celebrate the anniversary of the founding of Storybrook, where I remind everyone that they shouldn’t be angry with me because I gifted them with indoor plumbing, electric stoves, and fast internet.”

Regina picks at her plate, she had forgotten how boring these affairs could be. At least for a woman who would rather keep to herself. Emma seems to weave effortlessly in and out of each conversation with an infinite energy reserve to draw from.

She takes a sip of her strawberry daiquiri. She supposes that she has the charisma but she lacks the patience for smalltalk. And now that the speeches and announcements are through she finds herself quite bored.

She thinks to beckon Emma over but she doesn’t have the heart to pull her away from Ruby, not when those two have so much catching up to do since Ruby had gone off to finish college. And so Regina sits alone with her meal and drink, listening to the pop hits blaring from Mary’s ipod.

It reminds her too much of her early days of redemption, the isolation and stresses that came with it…

She stands up to fetch herself some desert. She ought to take a little something for Emma too before it is all gone. Between each of the seven dwarves and Granny, the cookies and chocolate cakes seem to disappear rather quickly.

So quickly, in fact that there is only one slice of cake left. She takes that one from Emma, lest she subject herself to a night full of pouts and complaints. She also takes a few cookies, unsure of which Emma is in the mood for tonight.

For herself she swipes a brownie or two.

“You did a good job on tonight’s speech.” David smiles.

Regina nods. “Thank you.”

He returns the nod, stuffs his hands in to his pockets, and begins to walk away.

“Oh, David?”

He turns around.

“Can you let Emma know that I saved some desert for her?”

“Why don’t you tell her yourself?” He asks.

“I don’t want to interrupt.” She sets the plates on the table and stuffs her hands into her pockets. “She’s with me twenty-four seven, I figure that she could use a break.”

David gives her back a gentle pat. “Sure, Regina. I’ll let her know.”

She knows that David has let Emma know that she is waiting. And she is plenty aware that Emma has looked in her directions several times, prompting her with her eyes that she will be there in just a moment. And it is crystal clear that every time she begins to walk in Regina’s direction, someone pulls her in another. Each time Emma offers her a gritted-teeth cringe and Regina mouths that it is alright.

That she can take her time.

But Regina is getting anxious. This isn’t exactly her scene. Dr. Whale strikes up a brief conversation with her that she tries her best to engage, but she finds his fascination with cyst popping videos to be inappropriate for casual conversation, let alone dinner conversation.

Archie speaks with her as well and she hopes that she doesn’t sound bored or uninterested in his favorite subjects.

More people begin to make conversation with her and somehow that is worse than being left alone. Loneliness is familiar, this is new territory. She finds herself picking at her desert if only to have something else to focus on. Something else to keep her nerves from consuming her.

It is worse when they walk away. They move onto their next conversation partners, they don’t even glance back at her, and yet she still feels as though their next conversation is about her–about how awkward she is.

It doesn’t make a whole lot of sense. How she has no problem with public speaking, how her speech and announcements have gone so effortlessly and without a shake or a drop of nervous sweat. But now, with an audience of two–Kathryn and Jefferson, she finds herself drumming her fingers and fiddling with her fork.

Finally, Emma has her seat. “Hey, how’s it going? Sorry I haven’t spent much time with you tonight, everyone wants to talk to the savior.”

“You got here just on time. If one more person tried to talk to me, your chocolate cake would have been gone.” She passes the plate to Emma.

“That nervous?” Emma digs her fork in. “Mmm, this is good! You’re the best Gina.”

“Chew with your mouth closed Emma.” Regina shakes her head. “Yes, I mean, I suppose that there have been worse gatherings. I just…I’m still not used to people…”

“Actually wanting to talk to you? Not running away in fear?”

“Something like that.” Regina admits.

“Are you okay?” Emma furrows her brows.

Regina forces a smile. “Perfectly.” Afterall, she has no reason not to be. The town has more than warmed up to her, Henry is off at college and on his way to success, he is as proud of her as she is him, she has her wealth, she has her own success, and she has Emma to share it with.

She has her true love.

So why is everything still so dark?

Why, when she is left alone, does everything begin to feel so bleak?

She has everything she had asked for and more. She should be happy.

But she always seems to want more.

Her mood begins to lift on the drive home and it is easy to tell herself that the only reason for her poor mood was the party; now that she is on her way home things will be okay again, now that she has Emma’s voice to fill the grayness in her head. Granted that voice isn’t speaking to her, but listening to the woman’s dreadful attempt to master ‘Jolene’ is enough to make her smile. Especially when she briefly takes her eyes off of the road to glimpse at the woman.

Emma has such a bright smile, her locks blow in the wind.

It is mundanely liberating to feel it rush through her own locks, to see moonlight on the hood of her car as yellow dash after yellow dash falls behind.

Regina wishes that her own wasn’t so fleeting.

That these moments weren’t so short.

She finds that home isn’t the solution at all.

Home is worse now that the shower is running and she stands in front of the mirror.

She is no stranger to scrutinizing herself, frankly it is a habit that Cora has ingrained in her. But somehow things are worse tonight. The more she studies herself the more she can’t believe that Emma had actually let her go out looking like this! Her hair isn’t styled as neatly as she thought it did, the way it frames her face is unflattering. She should have used more concealer on the scar, on the bags under her eyes…she swears that she hadn’t looked this old earlier in the day.

Regina rubs her hands over her face; the dress also isn’t nearly as flattering as she had thought it would be. It hugs her curves–and not the right ones–too tightly for her comfort.

She needs to be more careful. She needs to show a little more restraint. If she keeps up with her nervous eating habit she is going to have more of a problem. Clearly it is already a problem, and one that mother had chided her for time and time again.

It is strange how the past doesn’t seem so distant anymore.

She finds that she no longer wants Emma to shower with her. She doesn’t want Emma to see her at all.

She doesn’t want to see herself at all.

She feels sick as she unzips the dress and lets it fall to the floor, but she can’t afford to be dirty on top of everything else. Emma wouldn’t want to lie next to her if she was. She fixes her gaze on the shower and jumps at the sound of the door opening.

She jolts.

“Sorry.” Emma winces.

“Not your fault.” Regina murmurs. She had forgotten to tell the woman to let her shower alone. She supposes that it doesn’t matter now. But then, she still isn’t facing Emma, she can tell her to…

“Are you alright, Regina?”

“I’m fine.” She replies quietly.

Emma sighs. “What’s wrong?”

“I said…”

“Yeah, and we both know that there’s, ‘I’m fine’ and ‘I’m. Fine.’ And we both know that those are two different kinds of fine and that one of them isn’t actually fine.”

Regina sighs. “Don’t worry about it, Swan. I’d just like to shower alone tonight.”

“Did I…do something?” She pauses. “Oh my God, it’s because I spent more time with everyone else at the party than I did with you! I’m…”

“That’s not the problem. You didn’t do anything. It’s just…”

“Another one of the bad days?”

Semi-privately tearfully, she nods. A particularly bad day, one made worse by that it shouldn’t be at all. Emma wraps her arms around Regina’s middle and Regina flinches out of her grasp. “Don’t!”

Emma flinches in turn. “Sorry, I didn’t mean to. I should have asked first.”

Regina swallows and grits her teeth.

“Maybe you should skip the shower tonight.”

“I’m not a slob, Emma.”

Emma turns her around and Regina tenses. Not that Emma offers her anything but a soft smile. She tucks a few strands of Regina’s hair behind her ears and kisses her forehead.

“Missing one shower isn’t being a slob.” Emma laughs. “Would you make me sleep on the couch if I did?”

“No.”

“Well then why are you…uh…making yourself sleep on the metaphorical couch then?”

Regina manages a laugh. “I’m going to just take the shower.”

“Am I still, not invited?”

Regina bites the inside of her cheek before giving a hesitant nod. It probably will be better if Emma is there to distract her from all of those thoughts that tend to work their way in during showers and while lying in bed. “It’s a little hard to shower with your clothes on, wouldn’t you say?”

“That’s an easy problem to solve.”

Regina manages another smile. If only she can shake away the thoughts that tell her that Emma is just being polite.

One day Emma, for some reason or another, will grow tired of her. Tired of her moods, tired of her mannerisms, and tired of her disintegrating looks. There are better options in Storybrook and the savior can have her pick of any of them.

There were Victorian style loveseats and Queen Anne chairs with brightly jewelled throw pillows situated over a plush white area carpet rug in the middle of the room. Folding dividers sectioned off changing areas and beautifully large elegant three-sided mirrors were stationed around. The large marble desk that had once belonged to the tellers, was smoothed down and held a cash register along with an area that served tea, wine, and champagne.

Daphne turned, a bright welcoming smile on her face before she frowned. Her long blonde hair was swept up into an elegant twist and she wore black slacks with a white silk blouse, strategically unbuttoned he noted, to showcase just a hint of the purple lace she wore beneath. “Theo.”

Pansy squeezed his hand as he tugged her to her feet before she moved to take a seat on the love seat nearby. Theo sat next to her and she only stared at him. “What are you doing here, Nott?”

Theo patted her hand. “What is it you said to me before you left Hogwarts… oh yes, we’ve never been friends and you may be a bitch, but you don’t lie.”

Pansy’s eyes narrowed. “I have nothing left to say to you.”

Theo squeezed her hand, tugging her closer to him. “I get it. You’re being watched. I imagine Goyle is, too. But you have your lovely shop here, it’s what you dreamed and from what I can tell, this grand opening of yours is doing quite well. It looks beautiful in here.”

Pansy’s breath hitched. “Looks can be deceiving.”

“We both know that,” Theo whispered. “Goyle’s an idiot. He never was bright and he never had much to say, but he’s always been loyal.”

“I took the Mark.”

Her voice had been so quiet, Theo almost thought he’d imagined it, but he nodded.

“I know, but that doesn’t mean you want the strings that are attached to it.”

Fall Fashion Forecast - Business Women's Guide to Fashion

As we enter the Fall Season, business women should embrace a new, fun and exciting style for professional success. Fall is a great time to try deep and earthy colors. It is also good to mix and match patterns to create a style of your own. There are many trends that have fallen into this season but we think there are three in particular that are worth holding onto for a chic, comfortable and creative style. Listed below are New Fall Trends that every business woman should incorporate into her professional wardrobe. Lace Lace is such a romantic and soft fabric that works well with materials such as cotton, rayon, wool and silk. Lace is also appropriate for the workplace when matched with complimentary styles and looks. Lace is no longer restricted to the black and white colors. Women are buying lace tops and blouses in deep rich colors such as purple, blue, brown and navy. Women can pair these lace tops with fitted suit jackets for a formal appeal. Or they can pair the lace tops with cardigans and v-neck sweaters for a soft layering affect. Lace can also easily move from the office to the lounge for an after work cocktail or networking event. This stylish material is not just limited to clothes, designers are incorporating lace in purses and handbags. Lace is also a wonderful material for shoes and other accessories. Vests This is the season that women are making fashion investments in their professional wardrobe. Vests which were inspired from the 60's are coming back in style in a mighty way. Whether they are cropped, fitted, one button or three buttons, women are pairing them with nice slacks and a button down shirt. Vests have a slight menswear appeal which adds a subtle edge to a woman's outfit. designer inspired looks dynamic with skirts to add a more feminine appeal. Skirts can be full, a-line or high at the waist. This season, vests are being made in different colors and fabrics and adding more variety to the classic wardrobe. Women can expect to find vests hot for this season and we think it might spill into the Spring Forecast. Wide Leg Pants Wide leg pants are becoming more and more popular and can be worn by almost any body type. We recommend that women get their pants tailored to properly fit their body proportions for creating a smooth and sophisticated silhouette. Wide leg pants were a hit in the 70's are now being mirrored by the younger generation. Wide leg pants look great with a fitted blouse or sweater or fitted jacket to create a balanced look. They should also be paired with heels or shoes with a height or platform to create a longer and leaner look. The Widow’s Best of 2019

Welcome readers to our Best of 2019 round-up. Some of you might remember that when one half of The Widow, Liz Arratoon, started writing about the circus 25 years ago – with Widow other half Adrian Arratoon by her side – she was almost a lone advocate for the art form. Don’t you get jaded, people ask us. Absolutely not! But we do long for something a bit different, and this year we have been disappointed that so many circus shows and acts have started to look a bit similar and yawny.

One notable exception gets our Best Show, and we did love Company Soralino’s clowning with cardboard boxes, and Mizuki Shinagawa on silks at the 40th Cirque de Demain festival, but we have cast our gaze beyond circus to take in whatever else has taken our fancy. Just to remind people, and before any more sensitive hearts are broken, anything we have seen this year, no matter when it was created, is eligible for selection, but if we haven’t seen it, it isn’t. Our list, our rules, and, in no particular order, here it is. All shows are in London unless otherwise stated.

BEST SHOW: We really enjoyed Aurelia Thierrée’s Bells and Spells at the Norfolk & Norwich Festival, but our Best Show is La Nuit du Cerf (A Deer in the Headlights) by Cirque Le Roux, seen on French TV. This is the company’s follow-up to The Elephant in the Room, and new cast members Valerie Benoit and Mason Ames join the original troupe of Lolita Costet, Yannick Thomas, Philip Rosenberg and Gregory Arsenal. Together they showcase a sophisticated and exquisitely choreographed blend of top-flight acrobatics, handstands, hand-to-hand, roller-skating, tight wire, you name it, in a totally fresh and exciting presentation, all backed by a wonderfully eclectic soundtrack. If only more companies could come up with something so innovative.

FEMALE ARTIST OF THE YEAR: Extraordinary acrobat Esmeralda Nikolajeff, part of the line-up for Barely Methodical Troupe’s third show, SHIFT, which opened the London International Mime Festival at the Platform Theatre.

MALE ARTIST OF THE YEAR: Wes Peden, juggler, who had a scintillating guest spot in Gandini Juggling and Alexander Whitley’s show Spring at Sadler’s Wells. Don’t miss his solo show Zebra at the Southbank Centre’s Purcell Room during the London International Mime Festival in January 2020.

BEST GIG: Le SuperHomard in the library at the Institut Français as part of the Music Rendezvous season, and Durand Jones and the Indications, seen at the Southbank Centre’s Queen Elizabeth Hall during Meltdown.

MOST ENTERTAINING: Lucy Worsley’s talk about Queen Victoria at Southwark Cathedral.

BEST VENUE: The Poodle Club in Sydenham.

BEST ACT: Foot-jugglers Marina and Svetlana Tsodikova, who are the Crystal Ladies in Cirque du Soleil’s Totem. They also get MOST GLAMOROUS.

BEST COSTUMES: Alejandro Gómez Palomo for The Male Dancer, choreographed by Iván Pérez, seen on the Arte app; Jean Paul Gaultier’s Fashion Freak Show (pictured below) seen at the Folies Bergère in Paris, and Queen Victoria’s crown, designed by Sheila Hay for A Night with Thick and Tight at the Lilian Baylis Studio, during the London International Mime Festival.

BEST INTERVIEW: Alec Baldwin’s chat with Elaine Stritch on his podcast Here’s the Thing.

BEST MAGIC TRICK: Shin Lim, winner of America’s Got Talent: The Champions 2019, doing card tricks.

LOUDEST GASP!: This photo of Joan Crawford, seen on @cjubarrington’s glorious Twitter account, where he posts vintage photos of Hollywood stars.

BEST MOVE: Anything by world champion football freestyler Liv Cooke.

BEST CASTAWAY: Living legend John Cooper Clarke on Desert Island Discs on BBC Radio 4.

BEST GOWN: Kathleen Nellis’ fabulous recreation of Marlene Dietrich’s ‘naked’ dress for Peter Groom’s show Natural Duty, originally designed by Jean Louis. Peter also wore it in Dietrich: Live in London, seen at the Crazy Coqs, Live at Zédel, for which he gets BEST CABARET.

MOMENT OF WONDER: Andy Goldsworthy throwing handfuls of snow into the wind in the documentary Rivers and Tides.

BEST LOOK AT THE MET GALA: Harry Styles wearing a sheer Gucci blouse!

HOTTEST TICKET: Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s solo triumph, Fleabag, at Wyndham’s Theatre, and, yes, we did speak to Andrew Scott this year!

FUNNIEST PERSON: David Mills, who stormed New York with Bitter Endings, but we saw him at the Poodle Club. Someone! Book this show for London!

BEST DANCE: The Seasons’ Canon choreographed by Crystal Pite at the Opera Garnier, seen on the Arte app.

BEST SET: Anna Reid’s simple, stylish and effective design for The Sweet Science of Bruising at Wilton’s Music Hall.

BEST SHOWBIZ STORY: The Man Behind the Microphone, first heard on Outlook on BBC World Service. The story of how filmmaker Claire Belhassine discovered that her unassuming Tunisian grandfather, Hedi Jouini, had been a singing megastar. Then we found the film of the same name.

BEST DOCUMENTARY: Liz Garbus’ 2016 Leave Nothing Unsaid, in which Anderson Cooper interviews his remarkable mother, Gloria Vanderbilt, about her life. Devastating and moving.

MOST FLAMBOYANT: Zack MacLeod Pinsent, who dresses like this all the time!

BEST SHOWBIZ BOOK – MALE ARTIST: Me by Elton John with Alexis Petrides.

BEST SHOWBIZ BOOK – FEMALE ARTIST: Dreamgirl: My Life As a Supreme by Mary Wilson… of the Supremes, with Patricia Romanowski and Ahrgus Juilliard.

BEST AUDIENCE: Ah, woof!

MOST NOTABLE ANNIVERSARIES: Ten years of The Double R Club, which was founded by Benjamin Louche and Rose Thorne, and runs at Bethnal Green’s Working Men’s Club, and three years of Cabaret vs Cancer, the registered charity started by Rose.

BEST VINTAGE CIRCUS PICTURE: Coo!

BEST FILM: Spike Lee’s BlacKkKlansman – which should have won the Oscar – and Olivia Wilde’s delightful teen comedy Booksmart.

BEST FILM SCORE: Out of Blue by Clint Mansell.

MOST IMPRESSIVE MEMORY FEAT: An hour and 40 minutes’ worth of words spoken by the one and only Maggie Smith, who returned to the stage in A German Life at the Bridge Theatre.

MOST ALLURING: Dina Martina, seen at Soho Theate Downstairs in Forgotten but Not Gone.

MOST MISSED: Agnès Varda, Clive James (born Vivian Leopold James!), and the French TV variety show Le Plus Grand Cabaret du Monde, hosted by Patrick Sébastien, which started in 1998 and ended this year.

GONE FAR TOO SOON: The creative genius Nell Gifford, co-founder of Giffords Circus, who died at 46.

MOST ANTICIPATED: Obviously Wes Peden’s previously mentioned Zebra, and Daniele Finzi Pasca’s latest creation, NUDA, premiering on 11 September 2020 at LAC, Lake Lugano in Switzerland.

Look out for our first interview of 2020, with Scottish aerialist and acobat Lauren Jamieson, who has a PhD in chemistry but gave up her science career to focus on circus full time. She will appear in The Feathers of Daedalus show Tarot during the Vault Festival 2020.
