CIVIL WAR (2024)
Starring Kirsten Dunst, Cailee Spaeny, Wagner Moura, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Nick Offerman, Nelson Lee, Evan Lai, Sonoya Mizuno, Jefferson White, Juani Feliz, Edmund Donovan, Karl Glusman, Jin Ha, Jojo T. Gibbs, Jess Matney and Jesse Plemons.
Screenplay by Alex Garland.
Directed by Alex Garland.
Distributed by A24. 109 minutes. Rated R.
Civil War takes place in the very near future, a look at an America that is at war with itself and violently coming apart at the seams. It’s a dystopian wasteland with hundreds of abandoned cars, burnt out cities, gunfights punctuating the night, abandoned corpses and people turning on each other. It’s a very depressing thing to speculate about. Particularly because none of it seems all that far-fetched from where we are in history.
Interestingly, the writer/director Alex Garland doesn’t really bother with the politics of the situation. We never completely know what has caused the rift in the States – we are just plummeted into the situation with little or no understanding of the reasoning behind the conflict.
Even occasional hints are somewhat confounding. For example the force taking on the American government is apparently a coalition between the states of Texas and California – and I don’t think in reality you can find two more diametrically different States. Also the US President, as played by Nick Offerman, is somewhat reminiscent of Donald Trump, and yet in other ways he is not.
Garland seems to be saying it really doesn’t matter to the story that he is telling. Once the war has come, the causes sort of blur into the background. This ain’t no party, this ain’t no disco, this ain’t no fooling around.
Civil War revolves around four war correspondents who are crossing the country in a news van trying to cover the story, and hopefully get an interview with the President.
These (extremely) intrepid journalists are: Lee (Kirsten Dunst), a renowned but rather jaded photo journalist, Jesse (Cailee Spaeny), an extremely young-looking photographer who idolizes Lee and is still old-school enough to use a 35mm film camera, Joel (Wagner Moura), a writer who seems to be just a bit too excited by the warfare going on around them and Sammy (Stephen McKinley Henderson), an aging journalist who is much more circumspect and concerned about all that is going on around them.
Interestingly, although the two women are constantly taking pictures and the two men are supposedly writing the stories, they have no way of forwarding the pictures (cell coverage is gone) and they guys never seem to actually get around to writing.
However, they cheat death many times in their voyage across country to Washington DC. They realize very few people can be trusted at this point and are nearly constantly getting shot at. They also realize quickly that their press credentials are not going to keep them safe.
In general I am not a huge fan of dystopian films, but I have to admit that Civil War is a particularly gripping one, particularly in its fast-paced, danger-filled climax. The sight of Washington DC under attack, with trashed cars piled up to make barricades and missiles lighting up the night sky is disturbing, to say the least. And a brief earlier segment with Jesse Plemons as a renegade soldier deciding who is a “real American” is one of the more harrowing scenes in recent cinema.
Director Garland (Ex Machina, Annihilation) has been saying that Civil War will probably be his last directing job, at least for the foreseeable future. (He will probably continue on as a screenwriter.) If that is indeed the case, Civil War is a pretty good way to sign off.

Weekly video Review #4
VOICE OVER :
I admire the expression of a little boy's first kiss in so many different ways. At the beginning of this work, three breathtaking situations came out and I felt like I was the main character of this work. As time ran out, I wanted to get out of each situation, but the reality that I couldn't was frustrating. If it is a general story, it will stop with this frustrating feeling, but this work was rather similar to my experience because it was to express the first kiss in the end. Because my heart was pounding when I kissed my first time in my life.
The gunfighter – (voice by Nick Offerman) :
I personally like western movies and I was very excited to see that it would be a gunfight between people when I guessed the title. Contrary to my expectations, it was so refreshing that the story was carried out by the characters and the narrator communicating with each other and this gave me a lot of fun. The voices continued to induce the characters to fight each other, and the characters rebelled against the voices. And the man who is believed to be the main character induces everyone to not fight in the middle, but it eventually led to a gun fight and only one survived. The conversation between the voice and the characters was so funny.
Wanderers – a short film by Erik Wernquist :
Compared to the universe, I thought that humans died in too short a life and were like dust. Looking at the future-oriented universe, it was fascinating because it was very similar to the universe that I had imagined while watching various movies since I was young. Humans do not know where they started like wanderers, but there is a journey of individual life. All humans in the universe are in the same position from a cosmological point of view, but they live with their own thoughts and passion. Looking at this work, I had an opportunity to think again about how I should live and what I am. I thought that the human being who constantly pioneered the universe was so great even though it seemed to be immersed in the existence of the universe itself.
Luis :
The whole time I watched it, it was bizarre and creepy. The voice, the atmosphere of the house, and the facial expression drawn on the wall overwhelmed the overall atmosphere of the video. It seemed to use a stop motion technique and it seemed to take a very long time to make this painting. In the middle of the video, I wondered how the video was made when I saw the light of oil and other lights moving when the face on the wall blew through my mouth.
Maybe One Day :
It's what I always imagined. I watched this video and saw a man who felt bored and tired in the same routine. After a set morning routine, I go to work as scheduled. But he spent the day imagining things he wanted to do. He imagines and lists things that he wanted to do once in a lively way. Wouldn't it be okay for me to live like that for a day? The writer also seemed to have told me a good bucket list of breaking away from the set daily life through this video.
Losers :
There are many children who are bullied in the video. Each is bullied for different reasons, and I honestly wondered why those reasons lead to bullying. Even when I was a high school student, my friends around me were bullied and the perpetrators just seemed to need something to relieve their desires. They never bother alone. Is it really the winner who bullies other students in groups and gets satisfaction from them? Do they really deserve to be called losers for bullying students? As shown later in the video, the real losers are the outcasts. I want to show this video to students at school.

Weekly Video Review #4
1.  VOICE OVER
https://vimeo.com/58150375
The artist shows three cases where time is urgent, making the viewer feel very tense and frustrated. Spaces and actions that transcend human limits, such as a lack of oxygen on the moon, a situation in which a leg was cut during the war, a situation in which a person fell into the water but was tied with a rope, make viewers adapt to the situation. But it was all a means to express the first kiss. The artist uses the above three situations to express the excitement of a young child before their first kiss and the heart after their first kiss. so awesome! Come to think of it, even my first kiss couldn't breathe as the artist expressed it. It will be one of the best moments of my life!
2.  The Gunfighter | A Short Film by Eric Kissack (narrated by Nick Offerman)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cWs4WA--eKU
Set in the Western era, a man enters a bar. The narrator tells the obvious story, but people communicate with the narrator and say they will not act as the obvious story. The story unfolds through constant communication between the narrator and people. I want this video to be subtitled Ballet of Death. People end up shooting each other and killing each other because of the narrator's words. And only women survive. It was an unnecessary gunfight because of the voice. Very fun and I recommend it to everyone!
3.  Wanderers - a short film by Erik Wernquist
https://vimeo.com/108650530
This is a video explaining the considerations of people living in space. I was able to see artistic images of the universe and planets while watching this video. It also gave people an opportunity to think about where they came from and where they are going, why they should live, and what it means to live. The artist shows us the universe, a vast and unknown world, and defines us as wanderers. How do wanderers who live and die short lives compared to the universe live despite their short lives?
4.  Luis | Future Shorts
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=veMBIWv0ews
The technique of cleaning the room when a voice blew in the wind or cleaning the sofa when the shouting was peculiar. I felt terrified and creepy throughout watching the video. Also, it was so amazing that the picture about the story was drawn on the wall and that the artist used the stop motion technique. It really inspired me a lot. Did this video express the artist's angry inner self? It was very scary, but it was interesting!
5.  Maybe One Day | Future Shorts
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fn0lhsXHEhc
In our daily routine that repeats itself, at least once in our lives, we think of what we want to do someday. At the beginning of the video, the expressionless protagonist, who lives a repeating daily life, makes very different expressions when imagining the day he wants. The protagonist inspires himself and achieves it in his head. This video expresses a day that people want to live at least once in line with busy modern people.
6.  Losers | Future Shorts
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0R6VE0i1Zt4
This is a video about the bullying issue. A true loser is the one who is bullied, not the one being bullied. The perpetrator hurts their hearts by saying bad things to the victim. The power of words is strong. You can completely change a person's life or take control of that person's mind. Perpetrators take the act lightly because they are only having fun or attacking a target to unleash their anger. But by doing that, you become a loser.

The 20 :: Your Daily Cup of Culture (#207)
""If you can fall in love again and again. If you can forgive as well as forget, if you can keep from growing sour, surly, bitter and cynical… you’ve got it half licked.""  -- Henry Miller
Your Daily Cup of Culture...
Here's The 20 things I found on the internet worth sharing today. Ventipop's Grind posts can be fun, serious, thoughtful, some great new song or something to buy. If not, you can get your money back.
1. Banana Oil! - Banana Oil! was a common phrase people used in the 1920's. It meant "non-sense!" and I'm trying to bring it back. So, by all means, use Banana Oil in a sentence this weekend.
2. 40 Winks In A Pod - Lower you head in shame no longer! You need a nap at work?By God, you take your nap at work! Chicago Tribune: Office napping climbs out from under the desk and into high-tech pods
3. It's Complicated - Having just finished reading Blubber to my kids, I agree 100% female relationships can be quite difficult and complicated. The Atlantic examines Why Women’s Friendships Are So Complicated.
4. Toys R Amazon - With Toys R Us shuttering its stores last week, Amazon sees a hole in the toy market and plans on publishing a print toy catalog like on actual paper.
5. Feel - Detroit-based brand Shinola filmed portraits of newly naturalized U.S. citizens, and gave each of them limited-edition watches engraved with the Statue of Liberty. The timepieces were packaged in a box bearing the phrase 'From this second forward, you are as American as the rest of us.'

6. The Unwritten Manual (now written) - Jen Reviews describes itself as "the unwritten manual that many of us wish existed when we scratched our heads over how to smoke meats without a smoker, how to get rid of bed bugs or what is the best shower head for dogs." All articles on Jen Reviews are written by experts in their particular niches. A team of professionals that includes former Olympians, dietitians, pastry chefs, certified dog trainers and more. And even better, Jen Reviews believes that showing is better than telling which is why most of the articles include how-to videos. Check out Jen Reviews the next time you're searching for a DIY and feel Google is letting you down.
7. No Belgian Waffling - Speaking of Jen Reviews, I really enjoyed this comprehensive 100 Best Things to do in Belgium article and now I very much want to go on a comic scavenger hunt in Brussels. (See #5)
8. Foodiful - Ruby Chocolate is the first new chocolate variety in 80 years
9. Crime & TV - Say what you want about excessive television viewing, but the one thing we don't do when we watch tv is commit crime. The New Yorker: How to Fight Crime with Your Television
10. New Song of the Day - I like her entire record Rabbit Hole but I'll single out "Choirs" by Ashe
11. Anti-Woke? - Jerry Seinfeld's Comedians In Cars Getting Coffee starts streaming its tenth season today on Netflix. Seinfeld prides himself on 'shows about nothing' but in this day and age, is there anything wrong with that?
12. Trust - I'm trying to be more open to new things, so after 21 years, I finally let my wife make my coffee for me.
13. Country Music as Film Noir? - A unique look at country songs: 12 Country Classics That Capture the Spirit of Noir

15. Product of the Day - Ventipop's friends over at The What recommend this economical yet flattering bra for under $20 to wear with dresses that are low cut in the front and/or back (best for C cups or smaller).
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});
16. MVP RB - Jacksonville Jaguars running back Leonard Fournette just raised his stock for my fantasy draft next month. A struggling LSU student was asking for donations of "$1, $5 ANYTHING HELPS!"...so he paid the bill in full.
17. Brazil Nut - Franklin Foer on Neymar: The Annoying Genius Who Makes the World Cup Worth Watching.
18. Be the Ball, Danny - As the 2018 FIFA World Cup enters the quarterfinals, amaze everyone with your vast knowledge of the history of the World Cup ball:
"“Make your interests gradually wider and more impersonal, until bit by bit the walls of the ego recede, and your life becomes increasingly merged in the universal life.”"  -- Bertrand Russell
19. A Fulfilling Life - Brainpickings studies Bertrand Russell's musings on how to grow old and what makes a fulfilling life.
20. The Last Drop - This video is Banana Oil! Nick Offerman narrates the delightful "The Gunfighter" (Warning: NSFW):

Week 4 Video Review
The Gunfighter, Nick Offerman
Sweeping orchestral music plays as a thriving, old fashion western town looms into view. Before the viewer is a stereotypically western situation; a loan gunfighter enters a crowded saloon to dole out swift, lead justice. However, the silence of the scene is broken by an incorporeal, godly voice that narrates the scene to the gunfighter and the rest of the bar's patrons. Acting as an omnipotent character alongside the rest of the bar's patrons, the narrator (Nick Offerman) usurps the agency of the on-screen characters for his own ends. The appearance and use of the phantom narrator in The Gunfighter challenges the typical narrative flow of film and the agency of on-screen characters.
The Wanderer, Carl Sagan/Erik Wernquist
The gentle yet thundering voice of a deceased Carl Sagan transitions us (the audience) into the unbelievable; a future for humanity that involves a small group of the now trans-planetary human species travelling across our solar system. This short film is about adventure of the most extraordinary kind, but the realistic 3D images and scenes would feel floaty and pointless without the voice over. In this case, the voice over serves as the narrative backbone to the on-screen visuals giving them form, context, and a natural order that aligns to the dialogue of the voice over. The prolific words of Carl Sagan are used to pronounced effect here.

Week 4 Readings and Videos
- Video 1 The Voice Over -
The narrating is in 3rd person
It has funny humor here and there with the wording
It talked and showed three scenario. Different planet, dying soldier and drowning under the water with leg tied to the boat.
I think that all three scene is connected to the kissing scene at the end, everything has a simple solution.
- Video 2 The Gunfighter (Narrated by Nick Offerman) -
The narrating is really funny, what makes it funnier is the character in the scene is questioning where the narrating from and completely clueless.
The narrating reveal all plans and thoughts of all character to tell a story
- Video 3 Wanderers (A Short Film by Erik Wernquist) -
Watching the film gave me a sense that i’m watching a documentary from the Discovery channel
The music is matching with the film, gives it a grand feeling.
The pauses between the narrating allows the viewer to watch the scenes after a short description
- Video 4 Luis | Future Short -
I think it is interesting with the narrating voice, but combine with the stop motion picture it gave me a headache
I love the pencil drawing when it shows the bear and Luis, very cool.
It gave off ASMR vibe, with the scratching noise and the witch like narrating
- Video 5 Maybe One Day | Future Short -
The video starts out narrating his daily life to the exact number with a tired and annoyed tone.
The tone changes as the music changes to a happier and livelier beat.
I think it showing self-acceptance and break out from the daily life to do something new that help boost self confidence.
The video give me a sense that he’s actually dreaming instead of experiencing it.
- Video 6 Losers | Future Short -
A deep message about bullying for who you are that’s not up to the bully’s standard
Bully just want to do it for fun and make themselves feel good, but in reality they’re the real loser
All race get discriminated for their behaviors, interests, looks, and many more.
