I'm really proud of what I accomplished in 2017, in and out of the animation studio. I learned from a ton of solid Directors, Producers and Creators. I pitched a few animation projects to studios and networks and got great feedback that will help me in 2018. Best of luck to each and everyone of you planning on grinding in and out of the studio in 2018!!
Ottawa International Animation Festival & The Animation Conference 2017
These guys: Mike Valiquette, Sonny & Bently, Cupcake, Tuff Pom and Jack the Rabbit - spread the good word about Startoon this year at TAC. It was great seeing our work on the big screen & sharing the stage with you fellas!
This is it. The Startoon Canada 2016 Animation Competition has come to an end. I made it all the way to the final round and finished second place. I poured everything I had into this final short. I’m super proud of how it turned out and I have no regrets.
Congratulations to Andy Greiling for taking the gold. You can check out his short here. I can’t wait to see where he takes his Grim Repo characters next!
I’d like to thank the Startoon staff and judges, my friends and family, Andrew Greco for boosting my ego from day one, Brad Weaver for fighting alongside me in the animation trenches through long caffeinated nights, and my girlfriend Lynsey McKay for being the voice of Cupcake, and for encouraging and supporting me through the entire competition.
The challenge for this round was to create a simple looped animation with the theme: Gone Fishing.
I really wanted to show what I could bring to a project with this challenge. I spent a lot of time on every aspect of this video: character design, posing, colors, lighting, animation, composting, etc. I also spent a fair amount of time thinking of the best way to portray this theme. I wanted to showcase the friendship between Michael and Cupcake and how they can have fun in any situation (and also the benefits to being a Cupcake). I hope the contrast of the frightened crowd (watching a scary movie) and my happy little duo came across.
You can go see all the other amazing entries here.
The Angry Little Cupcake is back in my new Startoon Challenge Entry! I’m really happy of how it turned out and hope it will get me to the next challenge. The top 10 videos will be announce later this week. Stay tuned!
After getting some feedback from the Startoon Judges, I re-edited my round 2 challenge. I made it snappier and (hopefully) funnier. I didn’t add any new drawings or anything - just played around with what I had.
I’ve been working really hard on the next challenge and can’t wait to unleash it onto the world!
My character The Angry Little Cupcake made it through the first elimination round of Startoon! 30 characters were picked out of 93 entries. I’m super excited to tackle the first challenge!
