Abstrair

Objetivo: Comparar acupuntura ativa com acupuntura sham para o tratamento da rinite alérgica persistente em crianças.

Métodos: Indivíduos com rinite alérgica persistente foram recrutados no ambulatório de pediatria. Eles foram randomizados para receber acupuntura ativa ou acupuntura simulada. Os principais desfechos incluíram escores diários de rinite, dias livres de sintomas, escores da escala analógica visual para efeitos imediatos da acupuntura, escores diários de medicação de alívio, contagem de eosinófilos no sangue, níveis séricos de IgE, contagem de eosinófilos nasais, preferências dos pacientes e pais por modalidades de tratamento e efeitos adversos.

Resultados: Oitenta e cinco pacientes foram recrutados no ambulatório de pediatria do Hospital Kwong Wah, em Hong Kong. Treze pacientes desistiram antes da randomização; 35 pacientes (idade média: 11,7 +/- 3,2 anos) foram randomizados para receber acupuntura ativa por 8 semanas, e 37 pacientes (idade média: 11 +/- 3,8 anos) foram randomizados para receber acupuntura simulada por 8 semanas. A acupuntura foi realizada duas vezes por semana em ambos os grupos. Tanto os pediatras avaliadores quanto os pacientes eram cegos. Houve escores diários de rinite significativamente menores e mais dias livres de sintomas para o grupo que recebeu acupuntura ativa, tanto durante o período de tratamento quanto de acompanhamento. Os escores da escala analógica visual para melhora imediata após acupuntura também foram significativamente melhores para o grupo acupuntura ativa. Não houve diferença significativa nos seguintes desfechos entre os grupos acupuntura ativa e sham: escores diários de medicação de alívio, contagem de eosinófilos no sangue, níveis séricos de IgE e contagem de eosinófilos nasais, exceto para os níveis de IgE antes e 2 meses após a acupuntura no grupo acupuntura sham. Não foram observados efeitos adversos graves. Dormência, cefaleia e tontura foram encontradas nos grupos acupuntura ativa e sham, sem diferença na incidência, e os efeitos foram autolimitados.

Conclusões: Este estudo mostrou que a acupuntura ativa foi mais eficaz do que a acupuntura sham em diminuir os escores de sintomas para rinite alérgica persistente e aumentar os dias livres de sintomas. Nenhum efeito adverso grave foi identificado. Um estudo em larga escala é necessário para confirmar a segurança da acupuntura para crianças

Week 2: Research Journal

I have been doing research for my project online, I am mostly able to find secondary sources for my topic. There are a few articles I found on one of the school databases that research essentially the same topic. In an article by Wilfred W.F. Lau, the effects of social media multi-tasking on the performance of university students is researched. I fall into this category of constantly scrolling through my social media feed as I go back and forth from my studies to my phone, repeatedly. Multitasking is generally understood as the engagement in more than one task within a given period of time. For the younger age groups (13-16, 17-19, and 20-24 years old, people spent more time on media multitasking relative to the total media time. Oye, Adam, and Nor Zairah indicate that academic performance was adversely affected when social networking sites were used to fulfil social and nonacademic needs only. I can concur with this result as I notice that almost every time I am doing some type of studying or homework, it gets frequently interrupted by using my phone. It is a bad habit that I need to break and I’m sure many other college students feel the same way. All of the secondary research that I find on this topic is relatable to me and my own study habits, which is concerning since the research almost always goes hand in hand with negative effects on academic performance. Using social media while studying or while you are supposed to be studying is believed to lower your attention span, create bad habits, and hinder your academic performance.
