Collection of items from Skateland USA, Compton, CA. Important Hip Hop archive.
Archive of vintage posters, audio equipment, apparel, and original signage from the roller rink bearing the Skateland U.S.A name, considered to be one of the most influential birthplaces of west coast Hip Hop, in operation from 1984-1989 located at 1950 North Central Avenue in the city of Compton, south central Los Angeles, California.
Considered to be the most important Hip Hop venue in southern Los Angeles, the legendary roller rink Skateland U.S.A. hosted some of the most prominent and up-and-coming artists in the early eighties from coast to coast that would change the landscape of music forever.
Skateland opened its doors at 1950 N. Central Ave the night of November 17th, 1984. Owned and operated by Craig Schweisinger, a commercial agent who had witnessed the profitable nightclub atmosphere north of Compton at ‘rival’ rink World on Wheels, Skateland became an essential venue for some of the earliest names in Hip Hop including Dr. Dre, first as part of the opening night DJ group the World Class Wreckin Cru along with DJ Yella and Cli-N-Tel and later with Yella, Eazy-E, Ice Cube, MC Ren, and Arabian Price as N.W.A., Eric B & Rakim (who drew the largest crowd in Skateland’s history), Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five (the first Hip Hop artists to be inducted into the Rock n’ Roll Hall of Fame in 2007), Mele Mel and Scorpio (two of the original members of the Furious Five), Eazy-E (first with CIA and Rapp In Stein and later, N.W.A.), EPMD, Toddy Tee, Mixmaster Spade and Latifah (before she became ‘Queen’), and Tone Loc who performed the penultimate show at Skateland.
The centerpieces of the collection are the original Technics SL-1200MK2 turntables, the only turntables used in the DJ booth by performing musicians – save for Run D.M.C – including a then-teenage Dr. Dre on opening night, one Numark DM-1450 Mixer, and one Craftsman EQ Equalizer. Also included are two hand painted signs, the first declaring “WELCOME TO SKATELAND, U.S.A” and featuring a list of rules required for entry, the second for the SNACK BAR, a spot where soon after performing as N.W.A, Dr. Dre, DJ Yella and Eazy-E could be found composing lyrics.

Still D.R.E is the most prominent song by Dr. Dre. It was launched on 2 November 1999 as part of the '2001' album. It features Snoop Dogg and has cameos by Eminem, Pharrell Williams, The D.O.C and Shaquille O'Neal. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_CL6n0FJZpk Background Dr. Dre was a well known rapper and producer in the music industry at that time. His debut studio album 'The Chronic' was released in 1992 and put him at the forefront of the rap scene. Before that, Dr. Dre was involved with a music group called 'World Class Wreckin' Cru' which released a song called 'Turn Off the Lights' in 1986 which Dre references in 'Still D.R.E'. Dre later found success as a part of N.W.A which was another group that was about gangsta rap. Hailing from California, Dre was a key player in bringing not only California but also the entire west of the United States in the hip hop picture. He was affiliated with the Crips earlier in his life, although as of now he is an artist ambassador for Peace N Harmony which is about stopping gang crime. Some sources question his gangster roots claiming that he only associated himself as a thug for clout. However, his connection with the Crips and notable Crip members is evident. Snoop Dogg for instance was a Crip member. After Dre released 'The Chronic' album which also featured Snoop Dogg, Dr. Dre took a step back from the rap business. He started working with Snoop Dogg to produce his debut album 'Doggy Style' which was released in 1993 and was a major success. Dre left 'Death Row Records' to establish his own label called 'Aftermath Entertainment' in 1996. He signed Eminem in 1998, who went on to become another sensational phenomenon. Dre was working on producing Eminem's debut album 'The Slim Shady LP' released in 1999. Dre launched his second studio album '2001' in 1999 around 7 years after he launched 'The Chronic'. Still D.R.E Song Meaning The song is about Dre announcing to the world that he is indeed back for real. He hasn't changed and he still has his buddy 'Snoop Dogg' alongside him even though he has had a falling out with other people as he mentions loosing friends in his lyrics. Dre was excited about his return and wanted to tell the world what all had been going on since he took a step back from the rap scene. Dre is talking about how he had always remained prominent in the hip hop business ever since he was part of 'World Class Wrecking Cru' in 1985. He mentions how he signed Eminem who was only getting bigger with time during that era. Dre is answering back at his critics and also telling his fans that he has still got 'it' in him. Things haven't changed much in his life as he is doing pretty much the same things he was doing earlier puffing leaves, making beats and driving around in low rider cars. He claims that he has still got love for the streets and embraces his gangster roots saying that he is the icon for gangsters all across the world. The song is about his lifestyle and him telling everyone that he is still the same even though you might not have heard directly from him over the last few years. He has all the credibility in the world as he has been producing fire records ever since he stepped into the music business. He faced challenges and rose up to face them. He evolved as time went by and was able to thrive with his street knowledge and also launched Aftermath Entertainment. Song Facts Scott Storch produced this track with Dre and Mel-Man. This was a major break for him and it later landed him opportunities of producing tracks for Justin Timberlake, Christina Aguilera, Beyoncé and 50 Cent. Even now people want to know who wrote still d.r.e. Jay Z wrote the song under his actual name 'Shawn Carter' and gave it to Dre. He talked about it with LeBron and others present in 'The Shop: Interrupted'. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J3KBnh_Ehhc You gotta have like somewhat of a reverence for them, the music they were making.
The Chronic and all of that. In order for me to really nail the essence of Dre and Snoop, it had to be like a studied reverence of what they were doing." Jay Z on 'The Shop: Interrupted' Dre performed this song at the end of the Super Bowl LVI halftime show along with Snoop Dogg. It currently has over a billion views on youtube. Let me know your opinion regarding the song in the comments.

A-T-4 020 The Unknown DJ, Dr Dre, DJ Yella
West coast hip hop starts making big waves in 1984. I'm sure I heard somewhere it was known as techno or techno-rap? the label Unknown set up in 1984 is called Techno Hop records. At this time West Coast hip hop really was heavier on the electro and would be influential on Florida and the development of Bass Music over there
The Unknown DJ (originally from Detroit) and DJ Yella were mentored by DJ, promotor, and club owner Alonzo 'Lonzo' Williams Lonzo had a mobile DJ crew called Disco Construction that performed around Compton. In 1979 Lonzo opened a club in Compton called Eve After Dark, it was here where a young Dr Dre is brought in to try out. From his Disco Construction DJ's Lonzo forms the Wreckin' Cru. The Unknown DJ goes off to do his own thing and Lonzo adds the braggadocios prefix World Class to the Wreckin Cru after they begin to record music. The first line-up of The World Class Wreckin' Cru was Lonzo, DJ Yella, Dr Dre, and emcee Cli-N-Tel
The Unknown DJ - 808 Beats the follow up. Unknown declaring he's the master not of playing guitar or a drum kit but the Roland TR-808 Rhythm Composer drum machine
youtube
The World Class Wreckin Cru's Surgery Lonzo's cru's second record
youtube
Dr Dre worked with Arabian Prince outside Lonzo and the Wreckin Cru. Arabian Prince was in an early version of NWA and features on their first release Panic Zone. I can't say if Dr Dre has anything to do with this track Strange Life but he's certainly on 1985's Innovative Life
Arabian Prince - Strange Life
youtube
Unknown & Three D - Beatronic stunning bit of early electro and the first release on Unknown's Techno Hop label
youtube
Dr. Dre and Unknown - Scratchin' 100 Speakers back to the scratching, you can hear the D.St influence

Kid Frost T.M.S. - Rough Cut (Instrumental) with scratches by Yella and exec produced by David Storrs (I'll do a bit on him later in the year.) Kid Frost releases the classic Terminator in 1985

Yella - Kru Groove the first World Class Wreckin Cru release. The lead track is Slice which is a copy of Run DMC's Sucker MCs

Eazy-E f/ Gangsta Dresta and B.G. Knoccout "Real Muthaphuckkin' G's" (1993)
youtube
Target: Death Row Records, Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg
Producer: Rhythum D and Eazy-E
Album: It's On (Dr. Dre) 187um Killa
Label: Ruthless/Priority
Best Line: "All of the sudden Dr. Dre is the G thang/But on his old album covers, he was the she-thang" (Eazy-E)
When Dr. Dre left Ruthless Records under suspect terms (and means) to start Death Row Records with Suge Knight, the feud between the two labels kicked off almost immediately. Dr. Dre led off his solo debut, The Chronic, with "Fuck Wit Dre Day (And Everybody's Celebratin')," which attacked his former friend and record label for their suspect business practices. The accompanying video featured comedian A.J. Johnson portraying the goofy "Sleazy-E," who was seen holding a "Will Rap for Food" sign on a freeway exit.
Obviously the Godfather of gangster rap didn't take this lightly, and quickly responded with an entire EP dedicated to the beef: It's On (Dr. Dre) 187um Killa (the EP's inserts included the infamous sequins suit-wearing picture of Dr. Dre in makeup, from his World Class Wreckin' Cru days).
The best of Eazy's disses, however, was "Real Muthaphuckkin G's," which slighted Dre for being a studio gangster, dubbed Snoop Dogg as the "anorexic rapper," and claimed Suge Knight ruled Death Row with an iron fist. But perhaps the most noteworthy revelation was that Eazy was still making money on Dr. Dre's publishing, so "Dre Day" was actually good for business.
Sidenote: I like the other line when eazy said but dre day only made eazy’s pay day

Marcel Young
The impeccable career growth of Marcel’s mother -Michel’le Toussaint
Dr. Dre is known to b the music king and was the father of seven kids. Marcel Young was one of them. Marcel’s mother was Michel’le Toussaint's singer and had always preferred to stay out of media attention. Considering this, there isn’t much information available but Dr. Dre seems to be still alive, unlike his sibling Andre Young Jr who passed away at the age of 20 due to a drug overdose.
Marcel Young's early life
born on the 6th of February 1991, in Los Angeles Marcel Young was the son of singer Michel’le and Dr. Dre. He also had over six half-siblings that included Truly, Curtis, La Tanya Danielle Young, Andre, and Bailei Knight who was Surge Knight's daughter. Marcel's parents met in mid 80 and had also worked earlier before they started dating. They got engaged but his father's abusive relationship with his mom caused the end of their marriage. Their marriage was even re-told in the movie called “Surviving Compton”.
Tumblr media
About Marcel mother
Marcel had seen a lot in his childhood. His mom struggled hard for a better living but eventually landed up on drugs and abusive relationships. Michel’le Denise Toussaint was born on the 5th of December 1967 in California USA to David West Jr. She also had a brother Ray West. In the early 90’s Michel’le Toussaint got engaged to Dre.
She always wanted to be single since her childhood. She rather started her career by being a World Class Wreckin’ Cru music group member as the female vocalist. In the popular single by the name “Turn Off the Lights”  Michel’le got popular and then she even got signed up for the Records Easy-E’s Ruthless
She then continued her career as a vocalist for the record which arête many albums. In the year 1989, her debut album was released and produced by her then-husband Dr. Dre which earned them both gold status. The album was a huge hit and gave tough competition to No More Lies”. It was also listed on the second number of Hot R&B/Hip-Hop charts
Another album was released in the year 1998 called “Hung Jury”, and since then there was no looking back. In early’s 2010 she was not seen much in the music industry. But again she managed to release her single in 2011 By name of “Freedom to Love”.

rekordbox dj android
Considering the fact that DJing is a largely popular hobby (or profession) in today's day in age, a lot of people want to buy it in taking this path but aren't sure where to start. 1) What is the viable promote for your genre of alternative? What I mean is this, there is no point purchasing a style of music to play that significantly everyone else hates or has never heard involved with. Do not worry, you do not need to sell out, we must are commercial element into your plans. Otherwise you will never get any bookings or make little money. I made the transition from vinyl to CD about a long time ago, although I have kept my old records in crates which are stored during attic. Playing music from a CD has a number of benefits, as is feasible one being the regarding tracks I'm able to hold on the single CD compared with regard to an old fashion vinyl produce. When you're standing behind the turntables naturally people watch an individual move and ways you look, so among the important things for a DJ may be the visual concept. There are no standards here, you aren't in is not business so any interesting haircut, piercing or tattoos, basically anything that will help you make stand out compared additional DJ's that played that night will help. As for clothing - tees are invariably important for visual style and is capable of displaying for example if the DJ takes his work dead serious or just views everything as an important party. As to direct examples lets look over at some DJ related urban clothes. From rekordbox dj Torrent of the World Class Wreckin' Cru Dr. Dre moved on quickly to collaborate with N.W.A., a pioneer number of the 'gangsta rap' genre, along with Ice-T. The time after leaving N.W.A release a his own solo effort and founding his custom record label Aftermath Entertainment that he really made the decision to focus on production as opposed to rekordbox dj definitely be a performer by his own. His first successful production credits include no other than 3 tracks on Eminem's highly successful Slim Shady LP. From then has been created very clear that Dre's knack for production was slowly unveiling itself and needed in order to nourished by further occasions. Where do new DJs or Intermediate DJs go to learn set-mixes that purpose? A website has been developed for Event/Mobile DJs to give DJs immediate access to Set lists for all types of parties; Weddings, Birthdays, Kids, Sweet 16's, Graduations, and great mixes for popular dance music, updated monthly. It's also a resource site for DJ's to and get all kinds of helpful tips, how-to's, and information, song programming techniques, and event forms. You can have away with DJing on the midi controller alone, many DJs still prefer to employ a traditional DJ equipment along with digital vinyl systems and hardware. Understand a set of CDJs or turntables if you the traditional feel of platters and jog added wheels. As a companion, Pioneer HDJ-1000 DJ Headphones, is very important have along with CDJ 800. It has supreme sound quality, and can clearly hear the bottom while other track is playing via your speaker. For optimum protection of your investment, fully understand recommend 2 X Pioneer CDJ 100/800/5000 series coffin case which has wheels and cooling freakouts. There are number of other cases that help the overall look of your Digital turntable, but I would recommend that you buy the best. The best mixer together with this installed is Pioneer DJM-400 Pro DJ Mixer, but the only downside truly has only 4 areas. For 8-channel mixer, will not Pioneer DJM-800 Pro DJ Mixer.

Who is Marcel Young? Write about his personal life and his parent's relationship
Marcel is the son of father Dr. Dre, a fabled hip-hop artist, and mother, Michelle Toussaint, an R&B singer. He is well-known for his parents' names and kept his personal life away from the spotlight. He regularly is in captions due to his parents' abusive relationship history, which was presented in the Lifetime movie Surviving Compton: Dre, Suge, and Michelle.
About his parents and siblings
Marcel Young saw this world for the first time with Dr. Dre and R&B singer Michel'le Toussaint. His Grammy-charming father is the intelligence overdue West Coast gangsta rap and co-possessor of Death Row Records and even retailed Apple his Blows By Dre headphones for $3 billion. Marcel's mother is a great and famous American R&B singer, and lyricist for songs such as It Still Hurts and No More Lies, Nicety.
His parents started dating in 1987 after working for the World Class Wreckin' Cru. Their wedding curdled after his birth, and they separated in 1996. Even after their divorce, Marcel preserves robust bonds with his family affiliates. In February 2015, his mother, Michelle, dispatched a photo of him and his father, Dr. Dre. She also thanked her fans for their curiosity about knowing more about her son, Marcel.
Later that year, in 1999, his mother wedded Suge Knight, co-creator of Death Row Records. On November 28, 2002, they greeted their daughter, named Bailey. Their relationship lasted long with each other for eight years, but after that, she divorced Suge Knight. She accused him of abusing her. Since May 1996, his father has been wedded to Nicole Young, and both welcomed two children, Truth and Truly.
Excluding, he has two elder half-brothers named Curtis and Andre. Curtis, his eldest brother, and Andre Young, his younger one, expired at 20 due to an overdose of drugs.
Tumblr media
His parents' abusive relationship featured in the film
Michelle sustained to accuse Dr. Dre of physical abuse publicly. He even hits her nose and ribs that had broken. In an interview in 2015, she exposed that he even shot at her, but she escaped a little.
With this level of cruelty and wound, Michelle chose that separation was the most acceptable choice. But the other side of the story was tottaly different. Dr. Dre and his lawyer appealed that Michell invented the whole abuse story for her film Surviving Compton. The only method to prove the truth about the happening is the statements of Marcel Young, but he was a very little kid when the supposed incidents happened.
