Poor Wrexial.

It’s not quite 8x8 (theres a group group of 2 4s) and the commmander goes in the 7. I’d love to know if there’s anything I may have forgotten?
(if it’s an obvious staple such as top, I just don’t own any yet)

Regarding Whales vs. Krackens, Leviathans, Octopuses, and Serpents. The first card to group them was Quest for Ula's Temple in Worldwake - which only had one kracken: Wrexial, the Risen Deep. Zendikar had 1 Krakens, 1 Octopus and 1 Serpent, but still no Leviathans. However, at the time of Worldwake's printing no whales had been printed since Great Whale in Urza's Saga nearly 12 years prior whereas Alara block had 3 Leviathans (and another was coming in M11).

In building a satisfying simic deck that embodies what I as a player enjoy about simic as a strategy, I’ve discovered a new way of deckbuilding that gives my decks more replayability. I’ve named it-
Tumblr media
Modular Commander Decks
What is a modular commander deck? The goal is to make a deck with a strategy you enjoy, with three or more different commander options (defined by one or more legendaries within the color identity of the deck. For example Pir and Toothy, Zegana, and Quandrix can all pilot simic decks). The process is to make a functional deck of a strategy you enjoy then make important pieces of the deck legendary creatures.
Simic was a good example of this. All three of these can pilot my simic deck, giving it a different flavor each game I run. Maybe one game I want to run Vorel for more of an early game. Maybe I want Quandrix for more of a midgame boost. They spice the deck differently but are all viable heads of the deck.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In completing my dimir mill deck I’ve found this is easier to do than I thought. The deck was designed with Lazav in mind but after refocusing it into a dimir mill strat where Lazav just adds spice now more commanders are viable. Mirko Vosk gives me more mill from the command zone while Wrexial focuses on theft of something else. In total the deck has 4 different commander options with the Scarab God.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
What is lost in this method? You stop using build around me cards. These are cards that are dead in the water if you can’t play your commander. For example in a Vorel deck I would run illusionist’s bracers and magewright stone. But those don’t synergize with enough other cards to be worthwhile if I don’t run Vorel. Instead I focus on the core strategy of the deck: simic counters. This makes the deck itself a stronger build.
This isn’t a new golden rule by any means. Not all my decks will run modular commanders. It is something I’ve enjoyed as a deckbuilding challenge, and strategies based around established mechanics and ideas like izzet artificing, bant auras, and monoB reanimator have a lot of potential for interesting and unique combinations of commander options. For monoB do you go Whisper, K’rrik, Torgaar, Ayara, Gisa? There’s a lot of angles to experiment with. The rewarding angle of modular decks is that you get a commander deck that can be viewed from the angle of multiple commander options to keep it fresh. The most I’ve made for a deck is 7 commander options. I’d love to hear someone beat that number!

Tournament of Champions qualifying round
Hey!  After a hiatus, we are BACK with a new project.
After including Commander Legends, there are 1,076 Legendary Creatures in Magic (including silver border and so on).  Over the next six months, the Magic community is invited to vote for their favourites in a knockout tournament until only ONE remains!
The votes will be broken up into manageable batches each day.  But the first order of business: We need to have a power of 2 for a perfect single elimination contest, and we’re a little over.  So 104 of those Legends have to earn their place via a qualifying round.  The cards and matchups were chosen at random.

Topi’s Daily Card #993: Wrexial, the Risen Deep
Wrexial is both a powerful commander and an awesome support card for any milling strategy or theft decks.  Both Islandwalk and Swampwalk will ensure there’ll  almost always be an opponent that you can attack without fear of blockers, and then that combat damage effect is just plain nuts.  Getting to flashback anything that they have with an exile effect is pretty awesome, doubling as graveyard removal for spells in a way, stopping other spell based decks from recurring them.  Free spells and a creature with high toughness, decent damage and tons of evasion?  Yes please.

Hey! I was looking through your blog (bit creepy I know) and I saw one of your characters named Auraion and honestly she looks and sounds awesome! What's her whole deal? Hope you don't mind my asking!
I don’t mind at all! Honestly happy there’s interest, haha. I don’t find it that creepy. Thank you!
Sadly… this is kinda a tough one to go in full depth, though honestly most of her pertinent info is actually on my Terraria character list; while she’s effectively original, she just kinda lives there (like Daimera) in her off-time. More in-world info for her WOULD be on my headworld blog but it’s, uh… kinda… shut down. Which is what makes it difficult to go more in-depth for anything that’s not tied to her Terrarian origins.
Her meta backstory is that I’d hit ‘random’ for a Terraria character to play an adventure map with my friends (the pink/purple and blue colorscheme led me to naming her after the glowing blue and purple Thinking Putties, Aura and Ion. !!CREATIVITY!!). After we finished the map, I decided to keep her mage loadout from it, but also took her around to my main world and stole a bunch of extra magic gear that I’d collected from my main playthrough with Dai, so I decided to characterize her as a thief, but also a scholar on the account that she’s a practitioner of magic.
After a while I just decided to make her vague concept into a more fleshed-out character tied with my headworld mess, but left her in Terraria because she has nothing better to do.
For a while, I was going to make her Actually A Dragon, but decided to go with a more illithid approach on the account of her taking to wiping people’s memories to protect the library (plus, being the servant of a mysterious eldritch thing).
Along the way, when I took a short dive back into Magic: The Gathering, I made an Izzet deck full of annoying low-cost cards and decided that was her pre-Ambkryp-pact magic style, but also threw in a single Consuming Aberration and a few tap-for-any-color artifacts in order to get it out... that was so much fun that I eventually switched her theme deck to full-on Dimir for EDH with Wrexial as the Commander. Fun ensued. I know mill isn’t good in EDH but it’s hilarious.
Her early 5-eye layout plus squidface paralleling that of the Moon Lord is completely coincidental, considering her old 5-eye look predates the Moon Lord by almost three years, haha.

Generally, I find that I don't mind extra turn cards too much, just as long as they aren't used consistently or consecutively. I've seen multiple combat steps take longer and end more games that I have time warp effects, but that is only my experience. Most of my playgroups look unfavourably upon time warps, so that is probably why I don't see them longer. That said, I did win against a Medomai extra-turns deck because of Silent-Blade Oni and Wrexial, so that was amusing. It was tiresome though.
It sounds like you mind extra turns enough for them to sour your enjoyment and tbh that’s why I don’t like them. They come off as selfish to me
