Fantastic Planet (René Laloux, 1973)
Cast (voices): Jennifer Drake, Eric Baugin, Jean Topart, Jean Valmont, Sylvie Lenoir, Michèle Chahan, Yves Barsacq, Hubert de Lapparent, Gérard Hernandez, Claude Joseph, Philippe Ogouz, Jacques Ruisseau. Screenplay: Roland Topor, René Laloux, based on a novel by Stefan Wul. Cinematography: Boris Baromykin, Lubomir Rejthar. Graphic designer: Roland Topor. Film editing: Hélène Arnal, Marta Látalová. Music: Alain Goraguer.
Fantastic Planet" isn't a very satisfactory translation of La Planète Sauvage, the original French title, but the more accurate "Wild Planet" might have led audiences in 1973 to expect a film about a world overrun with motorcycle gangs. Conceived and written by René Laloux and Roland Topor, from a novel by Stefan Wul, designed by Topor and animated by the Jiři Trnka Studio in Prague, Fantastic Planet is a sci-fi fable about the nature of humanity and its place in the universe. The humans in Fantastic Planet are called Oms (from the French hommes), and they are tiny things in a world where the dominant species is the Draags, giant blue humanoid creatures with big red eyes. The Draags consider Oms at best curious little animals and at worst vermin that need periodic efforts at pest control. At the beginning of the film we see a female Om carrying her baby, on the run but being flicked back by a great blue Draag finger each time she thinks she has made it to safety. It turns out that she is being played with by some Draag children, and when the Om mother is accidentally killed, a Draag girl named Tiwa takes the baby as to raise as a pet and calls him Terr. Tiwa outfits Terr with a kind of electronic collar that she can use to pull him back to her if he runs off. As the years pass and Terr grows up, Tiwa tires of her pet and one day he makes his escape and joins up with other Oms, one of whom helps him remove the collar. But Terr has something to share with his rescuers: The Draags receive their education through a headset, and a glitch in Terr's collar has allowed him to listen in on her lessons. Moreover, in his escape, he has stolen Tiwa's headset, and can now share the knowledge possessed by the Draags with his fellow Oms. Eventually, this leads to a revolution in which the Oms are finally able to go to war with the Draags and exploit their vulnerabilities. Much has been made of the fact that the animation was done in Czechoslovakia, beginning in 1967 in the era of the "Prague Spring," and that work on the film was interrupted by the 1968 Soviet invasion. Laloux experienced constant interference from the suspicious authorities, delaying the completion of the film, and the political background adds a piquancy to the finished product. But Fantastic Planet is hardly an allegory of resistance to Soviet repression. It has its roots, as Laloux noted, in the satire of Rabelais, and English speakers will probably find a Swiftian echo in the confrontation of little people and giants. The animation using paper cutouts also recalls Terry Gilliam's work for Monty Python, but the imagination is all Laloux's and Topor's. Alain Goraguer's jazz soundtrack adds immeasurably to the delicate, melancholic tone of Fantastic Planet, giving it a timeless quality where other products of the psychedelic era, like Yellow Submarine (George Dunning, 1968), now seem dated.

Today is an extra Classic for Connor, Darryl F. Zanuck’s 1962 chronicle of the D-Day Invasion for the liberation of Europe, “The Longest Day.” With this being Memorial Day and next Sunday the 77th anniversary of D-Day, I chose this film as Connor and I have several generations of veterans in our family including family who fought on D-Day. This groundbreaking three-hour epic was so enormous in scale that it was shot with 3 separate units under 3 different directors: Andrew Marton (American troop sequences), Bernard Wicki (German troop sequences), and Ken Annakin (British & French troop sequences… and YES, George Lucas got the name from this guy). Just as mind-boggling was the cast which included many actors who actually served in combat during WWII including: Eddie Albert, Rod Steiger, Henry Fonda, Richard Todd (pictured top row), Kenneth More, and Leo Genn. The film also features Robert Mitchum, John Wayne, Red Buttons, Roddy McDowell, George Segal, Sal Mineo, Richard Burton, Peter Lawford, Sean Connery, Stuart Whitman, Jeffrey Hunter, Richard Dawson, Irina Demick, Bernard Fox, Don Adams, Paul Anka, Yves Barsacq… and so, SOOO many more. I first saw “The Longest Day” when I was Connor’s age with my veteran father who used it to help educate me on this chapter of world history as well as the history of our family. I tried to do the same for Connor. To all whom we commemorate today for making the ultimate sacrifice in the service of our country and to those who fought for the liberation of Europe on D-Day, Connor and I honor and thank you. https://www.instagram.com/p/CPjF3Qxjk94/?utm_medium=tumblr

Gérard Philipe and Michèle Morgan in Les Grandes Manoeuvres (René Clair, 1955) Cast: Michèle Morgan, Gérard Philipe, Jean Desailly, Yves Robert, Brigitte Bardot, Pierre Dux, Jacques Fabbri. Screenplay: René Clair, Jérôme Géronimi, Jean Marsan. Cinematography: Robert Lefebvre. Production design: Léon Barsacq. Film editing: Louisette Hautecoeur, Denise Natot. Music: Georges Van Parys. René Clair's first film in color is a pretty pastel confection set in a French village at the end of the 19th century, a period many French filmmakers were drawn to in part because it held a kind of autumnal glow before the harsh winter that would set in during the second decade of the 20th century. A handsome womanizing lieutenant, Armand de la Verne, stationed in the village before the beginning of the army's summer maneuvers, wagers that he can seduce the first woman to enter the room. She happens to be Marie-Louise Rivière, a divorcée who has opened a millinery in the village. And they happen to be played by Gèrard Philipe and Michèle Morgan, two of the biggest French stars of the day, both of them in middle age and endowed with a kind of gravitas that means the movie is not going to be a frivolous sex farce. For sexiness, we have a parallel flirtation between another lieutenant, Félix Leroy (Yves Robert), and the saucy young Lucie, played by the saucy young Brigitte Bardot. Yet the film is weighed down by the more mature couple, to the point that Clair's romantic nostalgia never quite comes off the screen and engages the audience. It's lovely to look at, and it has admirers who defend its bittersweet tone, but it feels to me more like an exercise in period filmmaking than a fully committed work -- even though it was one of Clair's favorite films.
