Dying Light: Monsters, We. Character Spotlight!
Zofia (Fi) Sirota
Kyle Crane's "Paper Tiger" since they met back in Harran. Bitten and overly bothered by about everything, Zofia didn't expect the Tourist who fell out of the sky to grow on her quite as much.
They've been through a lot since then; more than any single person ever should. Good, then, that they're two.
Another character sheet by @lord-nichron :D In it, Zofia got one of the Dying Light 2 outfits. I always thought it'd fit her well. THANK YOU
You can read Monsters, We. on Archive of Our Own. It's in its second season already.

Okay, we found out your nicknames for bby Aiden, does he have any for you and Zofia? Aside from "You're not my dad, dad." (Forever and a half gonna snort at that one) Or any for the rest of your extended family if he's met them?
Zofia is Fi. My Paper Tiger. Fi-Fi. Pop Tart (you know, 'cause she pretends to be all hard and crusty on the outside, but she's really sweet and goopy on the inside).
When I feel like getting my ribs jabbed with her pointy elbows she's pumpkin, babe, baby, and when I'm really in the mood to live dangerously, she's doll.
Rahim... Huh. You know, after kid, nothing ever stuck. And he hasn't been a kid for a long time now. Guess I call him Bro? He's my bro. And sometimes DJ T.
His hubby, Collin, is Decaf. That dude has zen.

Foster Parents Disasters
Two disaster hearts tending to one wreckage. A mirror to Found Family Obligation.
This is the second version of the commission I got from @arczism. One only had Kyle and Aiden, in the second I had Zofia join them. Kyle smiles in this one; she's a bit of an emotional support Fi, you see.
If you want to read some Kyle Crane and Aiden Caldwell Papa!Crane sorta stuff, you can find them in Monsters, We. on Archive of Our Own.

Pst pst. I'd love to know more about Zofia and Crane and their relationship tbh ❤️❤️🤗
I have been pst pst-ed! Please imagine my pupils getting REALLY BIG.
Tumblr media
Here they are, Kyle Crane and Zofia Sirota. Also known as Paper Crane.
Crane's and Zofia's relationship was built around a scaffolding of guilt and co-dependency.
When Crane first met her, she was a potential problem; she knew too much and what if she told anyone? Beyond that, he recognized her as someone who'd be useful. She knew her way around Harran and she could be his in with Rais. Now all he had to do was play his cards right and he could not only get his job done, but he could protect her, too.
He was wrong.
She got hurt.
And people died. Everything Crane had thought he'd had under control fell apart around him, which, I think, was the moment Zofia turned into a sort of symbol for his failings to him. And a means to atone. If he could keep her safe now, if he could make it up to her; it was like she became that one thing he knew he could do right from here on out and he'd rather snap in half than fail her again.
To this day, Crane considers every scar she has a failure on his part. But she's alive. And still by his side. That counts for something.
For Zofia, Crane managed to be the one person in Harran who was too stubborn to leave her be, no matter how much she tried to get rid of him. Like a dog with his favourite bone. Sure, the reason he initially didn't stop hounding her was 'cause she made herself a threat, but even so he was... kind. He looked out for her. He went out of his way for her.
To the point where, when his stupid plan failed and he could have escaped without much more trouble, he risked his life for no other reason than because he'd promised he'd not leave her behind.
From there on out, Crane became her anchor. More so though, he was her way back in. Back to a life where she could be around other people and one which went beyond find food, have shelter, survive.
None of that means they don't love each other. They do. Even if they're opposites (he's loud in everything he does, she's quiet; he's a social butterfly, she prefers solitude; he's a dog person, she might as well be a literal cat; he's a horndog, she's an acebean). Doesn't matter the differences though, they lean on each other perfectly, and while Zofia loves listening to him talk, Crane loves being with her in silence.
Bonus:
Why Paper Crane?
So, Crane thinks of Zofia as his Paper Tiger, since when they'd only just met she was mostly shot, no powder. He learned better, eventually, but the nickname stuck. And Paper Crane came from a chapter title in which Crane finally cracks under all the pressure he's under, showing a vulnerability he hasn't given himself the chance to feel until then. I felt like it worked.
:lies down and cries:

Dying Light: Monsters, We.
>> Read on Ao3 <<
Season Two, Blood from Stone, has started today!
There are three kinds of people in this collapsed world. The many who’ve accepted their lot. The rest that claws for survival at any cost. And those rare few who continue to live unabashedly—shamelessly—even with their humanity a fragile thing.
In it, Kyle Crane is only one long night away from burning Villedor to ash, while Aiden clings to his humanity, and Zofia, locked away in yet another cage, fights to forget hers.
Oh, and we've got conspiracies and sentient volatiles. And maybe a volakyle. As a treat.

It’s really not about what you do to survive. It’s all about what you do to keep living.
This is what happens when Kyle Crane finds a box of pristine rubber duckies: A night of Texas duck ’em with Kidflash Aiden, accompanied by Zofia plucking on an old guitar.
He’s so proud of himself.
Monsters, We. spoilers. I guess :]
@drawinglinestoconstellations is a wizard with colours. And with light. And with charming smiles. She deserves SO MUCH LOVE, GO GIVE IT. I couldn’t be happier with how this turned out. Thank you SO MUCH.

Kyle Crane and his Paper Tiger, out for patrol near Morrow’s Watch.
@rcrisdraws has blessed me with bringing this scene to life. Please look at all the gorgeous details *incoherent Taff noises*
Zofia’s horse is named Azia. She’s a Shagya-Arab and a bit cheeky, with an endless supply of equine curiosity. She has a knack for doming Biters.
Kyle’s Appaloosa is aptly named Al Capony (in no small part as a nod to Karim). Al is attentive and focused. He knows no fear.
Chief is a Belgian Malinois, one out of a litter of six. Out of those six, four are trained mainly for protection: Miss and Chief, and Mal and Ice. Chief hardly ever leaves Kyle’s side.
You can read some about Kyle and Fi’s life with the horses and dogs in Monsters, We.

Let the world leave us behind        Let your heart be next to mine 'Fore the flame goes out tonight        We can live (until we die).
Help. I have lost my mind. I have gone feral. I am off to live in the forests, eating moss, dressing in mud, and hosting tea parties for racoons. This recently married Paper Crane piece was done by Bluemist72 (@bluemist72). Thank you so much, I’m weeping.

The Monsters, We. gang!
Kyle Crane, Zofia Sirota, and Aiden.
The picture was taken 10 seconds before Zofia got out needle and thread and sewed up Kyle's shirt.
I wanted a height chart that wasn't just one of those vague silhouettes and so I commissioned the ever-fantastic @theheroofoakvale (who you should totally throw work at!) and OMG.
Look at them. Thank you so much, Ryn.

Chapter 12: Going Nowhere Fast
>> Read on Ao3 <<
It hadn’t taken long until Hakon’s home began to feel a little too much like a box.
Its walls and windows creaked warnings at her. Warnings about how they’d trap her here forever, while the door at the far end puffed itself up to make itself look all sturdy and locked and Yeah, you’re staying.
Zofia knew all of that to be bollocks, of course. Nonsense.
The walls were wood, not concrete. The windows were, well, windows. And the door wasn’t solid metal that would only negotiate with the right keycards.
Her nerves cared little for reason though; they were stretched taut enough that one more tweak would snap them and then there’d be blood. Who’d blame her though? It had been an eventful day.
And the hope?
That ever-treacherous thing?
It wasn’t helping. Not one bit. It distracted her, got her thoughts to run off willy-nilly into a direction they had no business running off to. Namely forward, to a tomorrow’s tomorrow.
Zofia scowled. She had no use for hope. It ought to go play with someone else. Like Crane, for instance, who’d not once stopped badgering Hakon about those inhibitors and those biomarkers and when and how and what and what if he was right and you can finally unclench your jaw and give up your tension headache?
“Thanks,” Aiden said all of a sudden, stopping her short from drowning hope in a bucket filled with all her lost dreams.
Zofia ignored him. Not for long though, mind you. Only until she’d finished repacking their medical supplies and herded all her thoughts together. Then she looked up.
He regarded her with a steady, near-icy blue stare, though his head was slightly bowed. His entire posture hunched like he’d fallen in on himself or tried to make himself appear smaller; to tell the world he was not a threat.
Aiden had been like that the entire time she’d bandaged his bite, and while the young Pilgrim hadn’t exactly carried himself full of brash confidence prior, he also hadn’t been timid.
This? This was timid-adjacent.
Zofia decided it was the scars’ fault.
He folded his arms when she looked at them and bunched them right up to his chest. Yes. Must have been the scars. The bruises. All of what he currently couldn’t cover up because his shirt was in ribbons. They weighed on him.

Chapter 13: Off To The Races
>> Read on Ao3 <<
It’d been a while since Aiden had dreamt of Mia. Properly dreamt of her at any rate. He didn’t count the muddled nightmares or the countless times when he’d chased a faint, Mia-shaped-idea through an endless, dark hallway.
Right now, Aiden dreamt of that same hallway, though it looked different. Felt different. Bright light poured in around him. A carpet ran the length of it. Doors stood on the left and right, open, and he could hear voices from them. And Mia was there.
Right in front of him.
Not an idea. Not the fading memory of a voice.
Right. There.
Aiden reached for her.
Mia laughed. She whipped around, her long hair bouncing over her shoulders, and ran. She didn’t need shoes. The carpet was soft. Spongy even. And she didn’t need tears, because no one took him from her and no one took her from him.
Aiden gave chase. He’d come to be a child again. Careless. Happy.
Ahead of him, Mia spun in a circle, the gown she wore whipping around her knobby five-year-old’s ankles. It was a long gown. White. It made him remember a sharp, chemical scent. He didn’t want to think of that.
“Aiden,” she taunted. “Aidenbabaiden! You’re slow!”
Oh god. He’d forgotten she’d called him that.
Had forgotten so much—
“Aiden,” A man’s voice said. It crashed into his dream, unwanted and uninvited.
So. So. Much. Aiden did not want to wake.
                   “Yo. Kid. Up and at’em.”

Chapter 14: Legacy
>> Read on Ao3 <<
With very little else to do, Kyle had picked up a new skill since he’d had himself stuffed into the GRE’s glass box. A totally practical one. Very useful. World-changing, even.
     Origami.
Paper cranes, to be precise. A classic.
On a day when he’d felt that itch to be a vandal, he’d picked up a book, torn out a fistful of pages, and turned them into neat squares. Then, channelling that vandal energy into something productive, he’d rummaged around in a dusty box stashed in the back of his mind, pulled out folding instructions, and gotten to work.
And, ta-da, here we were: a Crane folding cranes.
Hilarious.
Please shut up.
Sighing, Kyle slid off his pillow and stretched out his legs, unavoidably sticking his heels out into the chilly air. Great, right? Tall people problem number fifty-seven or so: Evil Science Lairs do not stock reasonably long bunks.
He smoothened out a crease on his most recently finished origami bird, all the while holding the thing above his nose, and listlessly read the words printed on the thing. They overlapped, forming nonsense prose and bullshit phrases.
Much like Kyle’s thoughts, really. They, too, were all chopped off at the proverbial knees and tossed like a shitty salad afterwards.
He huffed at the bird.
The bird kept dangling from between his fingers, perfectly paper-bird shaped and perfectly quiet. Kyle, still staring, suddenly found himself craving to pop the damn thing into his mouth and swallow it.
Why?
Fucked if he knew.
He’d been bumping into all sorts of freaky intrusive thoughts lately; from wanting to crawl into the bathroom and pull the curtains over him, to wanting to knock himself senseless against a wall, and, of course to eating about every goddamn thing that’d fit into his mouth.
Plus, bite people, ya know?
Have a bit of a nibble?
Especially those assholes that kept fucking knocking on his glass box. Like whatever piece of shit did right now.
Rap. Fucking. Rap.
Kyle decided he’d be stoic today. Ignore it.
He flicked the origami bird between his fingers, dancing it from knuckle to knuckle, and pretended himself elsewhere.
The knocking resumed.
