[A] disproportionate number of martyrs became monks after converting to Christianity. In doing so, they seem to have understood themselves as tapping into a richer and more demanding spiritual tradition than they had known in Islam. [...] Islam was developing its own ascetic traditions around the same time that many martyrs were apostatizing and embracing monasticism, embodied by early authorities such as al-Ḥasan al-Baṣrī (d. 110/728), the great proto-Sufi, and ʿAbdallāh b. al-Mubārak (d. 181/797), the volunteer soldier (mutaṭawwiʿ) who combined a life of combat, scholarship, and penance along the borders (thughūr). The rise of Muslim asceticism is a complex phenomenon, but it is clear that it evolved as a result of, in conversation with, and in reaction to pre-existing Christian practices. Thus do we find many stories of Muslims seeking advice at the feet of Christian holy men. These monks were ecumenical symbols -for Christians and Muslims alike- but also symbols of a spiritual path that was at the time more developed in Christianity. As much is suggested by the legends about the great zāhid Ibrāhīm b. Adham (d. 161/778-9), who is said to have realized his vocation as a Muslim ascetic through conversations with a Christian monk named Abba Simeon. Perhaps some apostates sensed this chasm and pursued baptism to draw closer to what they regarded as "Ur asceticism." By this same logic, perhaps conversions to Christianity trailed off with the emergence of more mature forms of Muslim asceticism, such as Sufism.

5x Jalal and Adham were brothers and 1 time they were not. (I know, lame prompt, but basically something that looks at the foster brothers’ relationship arc).

1. When Jalal complains of the distance between Kabul and Persia, Adham scoffs.

“Why are you sad?” he demands. “You’ve Khan Baba, and Mother, and–me to keep you company.”

2. When Jalal’s legs ache after swordplay and he stumbles over his own feet, Adham does not growl or grumble as does Bairam Khan; instead, he shows him how to shift his knee out of his way, and watches Jalal’s next practice, silent and proud.

3. When Jalal turns ten, Adham gives his the desire of his heart: an afternoon spent sneaking over the palace wall into the market on the other side. Jalal regrets it at once; it is loud and chaotic and noisy, and Adham disappears almost immediately. But he means it kindly, Jalal knows, and when Adham returns, smelling of strange perfumes and inquires if he enjoyed himself, Jalal nods. 

4. When the news comes of Abba’s death, Jalal must not weep before Elder Mother, who will only remind him that an Emperor must be brave; but he can and does hide his face on Adham’s shoulder until his sniffles subside. 

5. When Jalal prepares to enter the Mughal court for the first time, he cannot help but adjust his crown nervously. “Tell me the truth,” he commands; “I do not appear foolish, do I?” And Adham rises from his bow, and winks; “No more than usual, my Emperor,” he drawls.

Diriwayatkan dari Anas bin Malik radhiyallaahu ‘anhu dari Nabi shallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam beliau bersabda:

أَلاَ أُخْبِرُكُمْ بِنِسَائِكُمْ فِي الْجَنَّةِ؟قُلْنَا بَلَى يَا رَسُوْلَ الله كُلُّ وَدُوْدٍ وَلُوْدٍ، إِذَا غَضِبَتْ أَوْ أُسِيْءَ إِلَيْهَا أَوْ غَضِبَ زَوْجُهَا، قَالَتْ: هَذِهِ يَدِيْ فِي يَدِكَ، لاَ أَكْتَحِلُ بِغَمْضٍ حَتَّى تَرْضَى

“Maukah kalian aku beritahu tentang istri-istri kalian di dalam surga?” Mereka menjawab: “Tentu saja wahai Rasulullaah!” Nabi Shallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam menjawab: “Wanita yang penyayang lagi subur. Apabila ia marah, atau diperlakukan buruk atau suaminya marah kepadanya, ia berkata: “Ini tanganku di atas tanganmu, mataku tidak akan bisa terpejam hingga engkau ridha.” (HR. Ath Thabarani dalam Al Ausath dan Ash Shaghir. Lihat Ash Shahihah hadits no. 3380)

Istri yang menginginkan hidup penuh dengan kebahagiaan bersama suaminya adalah istri yang tidak mudah marah. Dan niscaya dia pun akan meredam kemarahan dirinya dan kemarahan suaminya dengan cinta dan kasih sayang demi menggapai kebahagiaan surga. Ia tahu bahwa kemuliaan dan posisi seorang istri akan semakin mulia dengan ridha suami. Dan ketika sang istri tahu bahwa ridha suami adalah salah satu sebab untuk masuk ke dalam surga, niscaya dia akan berusaha menggapai ridha suaminya tersebut. Allah Subhaanahu wa Ta’alaa berfirman ketika menjelaskan cirri-ciri orang yang bertaqwa, satu di antaranya adalah orang yang pemaaf ;

وَالْكَاظِمِينَ الْغَيْظَ وَالْعَافِينَ عَنِ النَّاسِ وَاللَّهُ يُحِبُّ الْمُحْسِنِينَ

“Dan orang-orang yang menahan amarahnya dan mema’afkan (kesalahan) orang. Allah menyukai orang-orang yang berbuat kebajikan”. (Qs. Ali-Imran: 134)

Wahai para istri shalihah, jadikan baktimu kepada suamimu berbalas ridha Allah. Lakukanlah baktimu dengan niat ikhlas karena Allah, berusahalah dengan sungguh-sungguh dan lakukan dengan cara yang baik. Lakukanlah untuk mendapatkan ridha suamimu, maka Allah pun akan ridha terhadapmu.. Insyaalah.

Sebaliknya, apabila suami tidak ridha, Allah pun tidak memberikan keridhaan-Nya. Parahnya lagi, para malaikat pun akan melaknat istri yang durhaka. Rasulullaah shallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam bersabda,

وَالَّذِي نَفْسِي بِيَدِهِ مَا مِنْ رَجُلٍ يَدْعُو امْرَأَتَهُ إِلَى فِرَاشِهِ فَتَأْبَى عَلَيْهِ إِلاَّ كَانَ الَّذِي فِي السَّمَاءِ سَاخِطًا عَلَيْهَا حَتَّى يَرْضَى عَنْهَا

“Demi Dzat yang jiwaku berada di tangan-Nya, tidaklah seorang suami memanggil istrinya ke tempat tidurnya lalu si istri menolak (enggan terhadapnya), maka penghuni langit murka kepadanya hingga suaminya ridha kepadanya.” (HR. Bukhari no. 5194 dan Muslim no.1436)

Bahkan, apabila suami murka bisa mengakibatkan tertolaknya shalat yang dilakukan oleh sang istri. Wal iyyadzubillaah. Sebagaimana sabda Rasulullaah shallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam pada hadits riwayat Ibnu Abbas radhiyallaahu ‘anhumaa,

ثَلَاثَةٌ لَا تَرْتَفِعُ صَلَاتُهُمْ فَوْقَ رُءُوسِهِمْ شِبْرًا رَجُلٌ أَمَّ قَوْمًا وَهُمْ لَهُ كَارِهُونَ وَامْرَأَةٌ بَاتَتْ وَزَوْجُهَا عَلَيْهَا سَاخِطٌ وَأَخَوَانِ مُتَصَارِمَانِ

“Ada tiga kelompok yang shalatnya tidak terangkat walau hanya sejengkal di atas kepalanya (tidak diterima oleh Allah). Orang yang mengimami sebuah kaum tetapi kaum itu membencinya, istri yang tidur sementara suaminya sedang marah kepadanya, dan dua saudara yang saling mendiamkan (memutuskan hubungan).” (HR. Ibnu Majah I/311 no. 971 dan dihasankan oleh Al-Albani dalam Misyakatul Mashabih no. 1128)

Gapailah ridha Allah melalui ketaatan terhadap suami

Marilah kita berusaha mendapatkan ridha Allah. Karena mendapatkan ridha Allah merupakan tujuan utama dari kehidupan seorang muslim. Dan kehidupan berumah tangga merupakan bagian darinya, dan satu diantara yang akan mendatangkan keridhaan Allah adalah proses ketaatan istri terhadap suaminya. Sebuah tujuan yang lebih agung daripada berbagai kenikmatan apapun. Sebagaimana firman Allah Subhaanahu wa Ta’alaa,

وَرِضْوَانٌ مِنَ اللَّهِ أَكْبَرُ ذَلِكَ هُوَ الْفَوْزُ الْعَظِيمُ

“Dan keridhaan Allah adalah lebih besar; itu adalah keberuntungan yang besar”. (Qs. At-Taubah: 72)

Diutamakannya ridha Allah atas nikmat yang lain menunjukkan bahwa sekecil apapun yang akan membuahkan ridha Allah, itu lebih baik daripada semua jenis kenikmatan. Seorang istri hendaknya menjadikan ridha Allah sebagai tujuan utama. Harapan untuk meraih ridha Allah inilah yang seharusnya dijadikan motivasi bagi istri untuk senantiasa melaksanakan ketaatan kepada sang suami. Jika Allah sudah memberikan ridha-Nya, adakah hal lain yang lebih baik untuk diharapkan?

Tapi ingatlah saudariku, bahwasanya ketaatan terhadap suami bukanlah sesuatu yang mutlak, tidak boleh taat kepadanya dalam hal kemaksiatan. Tidak ada alasan ketaatan untuk kemaksiatan.

لاَ طَاعَةَ لِـمَخْلُوقٍ فِي مَعْصِيَةِ الْـخَالِقِ

“Tidak ada ketaatan kepada makhluk dalam bermaksiat kepada Al-Khaliq” (Silsilah Al-Ahadits Ash-Shahihahno. 179)

Walaupun keluarga dalam masalah, seperti himpitan ekonomi, hutang yang kelewat besar atau persoalan kehidupan lainnya, seorang istri tetap tidak dibenarkan menuruti perintah suaminya yang melanggar kaidah syar’i. Rasulullaah shallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam bersabda,

لاَ طَاعَةَ فِي مَعْصِيَةِ اللهِ ، إِنَّمَا الطَّاعَةُ فِي الْمَعْرُوفِ

“Tidak ada kewajiban taat jika diperintahkan untuk durhaka kepada Allah. Kewajiban taat hanya ada dalam kebajikan” (HR Ahmad no 724. Syeikh Syuaib Al Arnauth mengatakan, “Sanadnya shahih menurut kriteria Bukhari dan Muslim”).

Dan ketahuilah duhai para istri shalihah, bahwasanya ridha suami berlaku pula untuk amalan sunnah yang hendak dikerjakan oleh sang istri, seperti berpuasa atau menerima tamu. Dalam hal ini, istri juga wajib mendapat ridha suami melalui izinnya. Rasulullaah shallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam mengingatkan kepada kita,

لاَ يَحِلُّ لِلْمَرْأَةِ أَنْ تَصُومَ وَزَوْجُهَا شَاهِدٌ إِلاَّ بِإِذْنِهِ، وَلاَ تَأْذَنَ فِى بَيْتِهِ إِلاَّ بِإِذْنِهِ

“Tidak halal bagi seorang isteri untuk berpuasa (sunnah), sedangkan suaminya ada kecuali dengan izinnya. Dan tidak halal memberi izin (kepada orang lain untuk masuk) ke rumahnya kecuali dengan seizin suaminya.” (HR. Bukhari no. 5195 dan Muslim no. 1026)

Memang benar adanya bahwa kehidupan yang telah dan sedang kita jalani telah memberikan banyak pengalaman berupa tantangan dan kesulitan dalam kehidupan suami istri. Hadapilah kesulitan-kesulitan tersebut dengan kesabaran dan ketabahan. Perhatikanlah apa yang dikatakan Abu Darda’ kepada istrinya,

Disebutkan dalam Tariqh Damasyqus (70/151) dari Baqiyah bin Al-Walid bahwa Ibrahim bin Adham berkata, Abu Darda’ berkata kepada istrinya Ummu Darda’.

إذا غضبت أرضيتك وإذا غضبت فارضيني فإنك إن لم تفعلي ذلك فما أسرع ما نفترق ثم قال إبراهيم لبقية يا أخي وكان يؤاخيه هكذا الإخوان إن لم يكونوا كذا ما أسرع ما يفترقون

“Jika kamu sedang marah, maka aku akan membuatmu jadi ridha dan Apabila aku sedang marah, maka buatlah aku ridha dan. Jika tidak maka kita tidak akan menyatu. Kemudian Ibrahim berkata kepada Baqiyah “Wahai saudaraku, begitulah seharusnya orang-orang yang saling bersaudara itu dalam melakukan persaudaraannya, kalau tidak begitu, maka mereka akan segera berpisah”.

Suamimu bukanlah malaikat

Sadarilah pula wahai para istri yang shalihah.. bahwa suami kita bukanlah malaikat, dan tidak akan pernah berubah menjadi malaikat. Kalau kita menyadari akan hal ini, persiapkanlah diri kita untuk menerima kesalahan dan kekeliruan suami kita, serta berusaha untuk tidak mempermasalahkannya. Karena berbuat salah sudah menjadi tabiat manusia. Kita bisa mengambil sikap bijak untuk menanggulangi kesalahan-kesalahan tersebut. Bukan dengan mengikuti kesalahan-kesalahan suami, tetapi bisa melalui dua hal.

Pertama, Menasehati suami dengan cara yang baik apabila terbukti jelas ia berbuat kesalahan dalam kehidupan rumah tangga.

Kedua, tidak mencela dan mencemoohnya bila ia berulang kali melakukan kesalahan yang sulit dihindari tabiatnya, dan ini pasti ada dalam kehidupan berumah tangga, akan tetapi bantulah dia untuk memperaiki diri dan meninggalkan kesalahan tersebut. Allah subhaanahu wa ta’aala berfirman,

وَعَاشِرُوهُنَّ بِالْمَعْرُوفِ فَإِنْ كَرِهْتُمُوهُنَّ فَعَسَى أَنْ تَكْرَهُوا شَيْئًا وَيَجْعَلَ اللَّهُ فِيهِ خَيْرًا كَثِيرًا

“Dan bergaullah dengan mereka secara patut. Kemudian bila kamu tidak menyukai mereka, (maka bersabarlah) karena mungkin kamu tidak menyukai sesuatu padahal Allah menjadikan padanya kebaikan yang banyak.” (QS. An-Nisaa’: 19)

Bersyukurlah akan anugerah dari Allah kepada kita berupa sang suami

Duhai para istri..

Marilah kita sadari bahwasanya suami yang Allah anugerahkan kepada kita adalah sebuah nikmat yang besar. Perhatikanlah di sekeliling kita! Betapa banyak para wanita yang mendambakan kehadiran seorang suami, tapi belum juga mendapatkannya. Dan betapa banyak pula wanita-wanita yang terpisah jauh dari suaminya, bahkan betapa banyak pula wanita-wanita yang kehilangan suaminya. Bersyukurlah duhai para istri shalihah. Janganlah sampai kita tergolong ke dalam firman Allah berikut ini.

وَقَلِيلٌ مِنْ عِبَادِيَ الشَّكُورُ

“Dan sedikit sekali dari hamba-hambaKu yang bersyukur (berterima kasih)”. (Qs. Saba’:13)

Perhatikan hak-hak suami dan peranan masing-masing istri dan suami

Dan ingatlah pula bahwasanya suami adalah nahkoda bagi rumah tangga kita. Allah Subhaanahu wa Ta’aalaa berfirman,

الرِّجَالُ قَوَّامُونَ عَلَى النِّسَاءِ بِمَا فَضَّلَ اللَّهُ بَعْضَهُمْ عَلَى بَعْضٍ وَبِمَا أَنْفَقُوا مِنْ أَمْوَالِهِمْ

“Kaum laki-laki itu adalah pemimpin bagi kaum wanita, oleh karena Allah telah melebihkan sebahagian mereka (laki-laki) atas sebahagian yang lain (wanita), dan karena mereka (laki-laki) telah menafkahkan sebagian dari harta mereka”. (QS. An-Nisaa’ 34)

Ya, suami adalah pemimpin rumah tangga kita. Maka dari itu, kita (suami dan istri) harus saling memahami peran masing-masing di dalam rumah tangga. Taatilah suami kita dengan baik selama bukan ketaatan dalam perbuatan maksiat. Karena taat kepada suami merupakan salah satu kewajiban kita sebagai istri. Dengan begitu, kita bisa merebut hati suami kita dan kita pun akan mendapatkan ganjaran dari Allah berupa surganya yang indah. Perhatikanlah hadits berikut ini,

إِذَا صَلَّتِ الْمَرْأَةُ خَمْسَهَا وَصَامَتْ شَهْرَهَا وَحَفِظَتْ فَرْجَهَا وَأَطَاعَتْ زَوْجَهَا قِيلَ لَهَا ادْخُلِى الْجَنَّةَ مِنْ أَىِّ أَبْوَابِ الْجَنَّةِ شِئْتِ

“Jika seorang wanita selalu menjaga shalat lima waktu, juga berpuasa sebulan (di bulan Ramadhan), serta betul-betul menjaga kemaluannya (dari perbuatan zina) dan benar-benar taat pada suaminya, maka dikatakan pada wanita yang memiliki sifat mulia ini, “Masuklah ke dalam surga melalui pintu mana saja yang engkau suka.” (HR. Ahmad 1: 191 dan Ibnu Hibban 9: 471. Syaikh Syu’aib Al Arnauth mengatakan bahwa hadits ini shahih)

Dan jagalah hak-hak suami kita. Sadarilah besarnya hak suami atas diri kita. Ingatlah, sejak kita menikah, maka sang suamilah yang paling berhak atas diri kita. Sampai-sampai Rasulullaah shallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam bersabda:

لَوْ كُنْتُ آمِرًا أَحَدًا أَنْ يَسْجُدَ لِأَحَدٍ لَأَمَرْتُ المَرْأَةَ أَنْ تَسْجُدَ لِزَوْجِهَا

“Seandainya aku boleh menyuruh seseorang sujud kepada orang lain, maka aku akan menyuruh seorang wanita sujud kepada suaminya.” (Hadits shahih riwayat At-Tirmidzi, di shahihkan oleh Al-Albani dalam Irwaa’ul Ghalil (VII/54).

Bersyukurlah terhadap pemberian suami

ورأيت النار فلم أر منظرا كاليوم قط ورأيت أكثر أهلها النساء قالوا: بم يا رسول الله ؟ قال بكفرهن قيل أيكفرن بالله ؟ قال: يكفرن العشير ويكفرن الإحسان لو أحسنت إلى إحداهن الدهر كله ثم رأت منك ما تكره قالت ما رأيت منك خيرا قط

“Dan aku melihat neraka maka tidak pernah aku melihat pemandangan seperti ini sama sekali, aku melihat kebanyakan penduduknya adalah kaum wanita. Shahabat pun bertanya, ‘Mengapa (demikian) wahai Rasulullah shalallahu ‘alaihi wassalam?’ Beliau shalallahu ‘alaihi wassalam menjawab, ‘Karena kekufuran mereka.’ Kemudian ditanya lagi, ‘Apakah mereka kufur kepada Allah?’ Beliau menjawab, ‘Mereka kufur terhadap suami mereka, kufur terhadap kebaikan-kebaikannya. Kalaulah engkau berbuat baik kepada salah seorang di antara mereka selama waktu yang panjang kemudian dia melihat sesuatu pada dirimu (yang tidak dia sukai) niscaya dia akan berkata: ‘Aku tidak pernah melihat sedikitpun kebaikan pada dirimu.’ ” (HR. Bukhari, no. 105 2 , dari Ibnu Abbas radhiyallahu ‘anhuma)

Jangan selalu melihat kekurangan suami. Apabila kita menemukan adanya kekurangan pada diri suami kita, sadarilah bahwasanya kita pun mempunyai banyak kekurangan. Berusahalah untuk saling menutupi kekurangan-kekurangan yang ada.

Dan bersyukur pulalah atas pemberian suami. Jangan sekali-kali istri meremehkan atau tidak suka kepada suaminya hanya karena uang yang diberikan suaminya terlalu kecil menurut pandangannya, padahal sang suami telah bekerja keras. Ingatlah kepada Allah apabila keinginan hendak meremehkan itu muncul. Bagaimana mungkin seorang istri meremehkan setiap tetes keringat suaminya, padahal dengan tetesan keringat itu, Allah menganggapnya mulia?

Apapun pekerjaannya dan berapa pun penghasilannya, bukanlah masalah besar asalkan halal dan mampu dilakukan secara berkelanjutan. Bersyukurlah dan bersabarlah wahai para istri shalihah. Bukankah masih banyak orang-orang yang keadaannya jauh di bawah kita? Ingatlah akan sabda Nabi Muhammad shallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam,

انْظُرُوا إِلَى مَنْ هُوَ أسْفَلَ مِنْكُمْ وَلاَ تَنْظُرُوا إِلَى مَنْ هُوَ فَوْقَكُمْ ؛ فَهُوَ أجْدَرُ أنْ لاَ تَزْدَرُوا نِعْمَةَ الله عَلَيْكُمْ

“Pandanglah orang yang berada di bawah kalian (dalam masalah harta dan dunia) dan janganlah kalian memandang orang yang berada di atas kalian. Karena yang demikian itu lebih pantas agar kalian tidak meremehkan nikmat Allah yang telah dilimpahkan kepada kalian.”(HR Muslim, no. 2963)

Bersyukurlah dengan kebaikan-kebaikan suami yang ada. Karena istri yang tidak bersyukur akan kebaikan suami adalah istri yang tidak bersyukur kepada Allah subhaanahu wa ta’alaa. Sebagaimana sabda Rasulullaah shallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam,

لا يشكر الله من لا يشكر الناس

“Orang yang tidak berterima kasih kepada manusia dia tidak bersyukur kepada Allah”. (Hadits riwayat Abu Daud dan di shahihkan oleh Al-Albani dalam Shahih Sunan Abu Dawud (4811).

Berusahalah untuk menjadi istri yang shalihah

Berusahalah untuk menjadi istri yang shalihah. Istri shalihah, yaitu istri yang baik akidahnya, amal ibadahnya dan baik pula akhlaknya. Bagi seorang suami, istri shalihah tak sekedar istri. Ia adalah teman di setiap langkah kehidupan, pengingat di kala lalai, penuntun di saat tersesat, dan ia adalah ustaadzah bagi rumah tangganya. Sungguh, tiada kebahagiaan di dunia yang lebih indah daripada bersanding dengan istri shalihah.

Nabi shallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam bersabda:

اَلدُّنْيَا مَتَاعٌ وَخَيْرُ مَتَاعِ الدُّنْيَا الْمَرْأَةُ الصَّالِحَة

“Dunia adalah perhiasan, dan sebaik-baik perhiasan dunia adalah wanita yang shalihah.” (HR. Muslim no. 1467)

Menjadi istri shalihah adalah sebuah kemungkinan yang dapat diraih dengan keihklasan dan bersungguh-sungguh dengan penuh ketulusan. Pelajarilah bagaimana wanita terdahulu mampu meraihnya. Contohlah mereka dan lakukan dalam rumah tangga kita. Jika sudah demikian, bersabarlah untuk memetik hasilnya.

Kita sadari bahwasanya,

Kita bukanlah Hajar, yang begitu taat dalam ketakwaan,

Kita bukanlah Asiyah, yang begitu sempurna dalam kesabaran,

Kita bukanlah Khadijah, yang menjadi teladan dalam
