Since Luz and Hunter in your switched AU are born in 1600s colonial America and Luz clearly speaks Spanish in the AU (shown in a comic) and is Latina (specifically Dominican) in show cannon, is there any history stuff you’re adhering especially considering the differences between Spanish and English colonies in location and demographic or are you ✨going rogue?✨ Is Luz an indigenous-Spanish mix like many Latinos are today? How would she have gotten to mainland since a lot of Spanish claim was in the Caribbean or Florida and treatment of indigenous people by Europeans, specifically Spanish and British, was notoriously brutal? Sorry if I’m absolutely overthinking this. This is coming from a history nerd, so I’m just curious how that’s going to work considering the realities of racial divides in colonial settlements during 1600s America and the relatively small number of Spanish people that actually would’ve lived there by then. AGAIN SORRY IF I’M OVERTHINKING IT I’M JUST A NERD FEEL FREE TO JUST BE LIKE “NAH.”

OH btw, I noticed a comment in a comic that implied trans Hunter and just wanted to mention that there’s some super interesting accounts of LGBTQIA+ people from the time period if you’re interested. I know of a fan work about Caleb and Phillip where Caleb is trans that covers that extensively if you want a link.

I LOVE ASKS LIKE THIS ANON!! Because IM overthinking it but at least someone else is too! So there's a lot I can't answer due to spoilers -- and I actually will be explaining a fair bit because I just am so charmed at how we are so on the same wavelength here so if you don't want to not know literally anything even a little bit spoilery about Luz or Hunter before the comic comes out I would ignore this ask! -- but I will go into some of it!

Okay! So I tossed and turned on this exact issue for FUCKING MONTHS. Go rouge or loophole? How historically accurate did I want to go with this concept and how much of that accuracy am I sacrificing for just needing something to be a certain way? Do I want to be as accurate as possible or have a cohesive and interesting story?

The answer is a little bit of both! Im much more of an art history nerd than a straight up history nerd but I have my moments! I love the sociopolitical conundrum having a latina Dominican (ALSO half black! Love that about her but SO hard to write in!) girl in 1600s America because it can be as little or as highly complicated as you can get. I drew a lot of inspiration for a long few months pouring over what groups of people were where and when -- what languages they spoke -- wether the books that I could find could describe a day to day of these people rather than just political conflicts.

Footnote : There are certain Native American groups so fucking overlooked that they don't even have ONE BOOK of comprehensive (non war centered) history that isn't a four year old reading level. I looked for WEEKS. I tried everywhere and was even willing to start to buy reading material but it just doesn't exist? Especially around the original colonies????? HOW!! People around me started telling me I should write a book because of how much I was obsessing over it and trying to find any information but no books can be written on close to NONEXISTENT historical writings! OKAY BACK TO IT--

I looked out for the first sightings of Spanish in the west and where they were headed -- wether or not any Spanish broke away from the group to have children with the Native Americans in the area at the right time -- what the political state was between Britain and Spain -- did they occupy the same or around the same places close enough I could fudge it? Were they friendly toward each other? When were slaves from other countries brought to America? What languages would they have spoken and is there a good translator online? What kind of spanglish can come from Angola, Umbundu and Spanish speakers at the time? Or would it be spanglish with Portuguese because of who was controlling the slave trade at the time?

Tearing out my hair and a hundred more google searches later I decided it wasn't worth the misrepresentation of both languages to try and include either of them mixed together in that way in the whole comic-- just bits and pieces separate for my sanity -- although I WILL get some cultural things in there I promise!

Some things just can not stay historically accurate and one of those things is speech. That was the first thing -- so damn difficult to really pin it down properly in the older dialects so I just had to sadly put that away first. All of the languages written about will be mostly modern versions, English, Spanish, Portuguese, and others but while keeping in mind the time frame.

Next I obsessed about when and where exactly would culture mixing begin and if the people stayed in the same spots! Also unfortunate ( for this AU purpose only! )that most of the Spanish went down and not into the Americas but history will be what it is.

SO

I decided that what I was going to do is make it up a little using a lot of historical context available instead of switching up Luz's race in a serious way to make the accuracy better -- I was going to have things happen MUCH sooner. Like 2 or 3 generations sooner. The Native Americans and Spanish populate together in 1500 ish instead of 1700 or 1800. I GET THIS IS REALLY INACCURATE but it was so fucking impossible to do anything else without getting into things I didn't want to do. The British get there the same time as usual and start the colonies in the 1600s but the Spanish are already moving up into North America and have already spent a lot of time with the Native Americans there at the time. SO that means that Luz is able to have a Native Mexican/ Native American AND Spanish mix at the time of the AU start and be similar to how the population became around now -- my dad inspired this! He's got the same mix himself and I loved that I could pull from that. It's such an interesting genetic tree honestly -- there's a lot of seriously horrible things that happened do not get me wrong -- but the history is amazing.

Luz being half black however feels similarly difficult but it follows the same principles of things with everyone who is not British making things happen much earlier. Africans come to America ( Horrifically and brutally I want to make that very clear) and some in real life of course make their way out of that brutality and hide away from the British and the Spanish...with who? The mixed Natives and Spaniards. Couple of generations later and we have a beautiful mixed pot like the America we see today but hundreds of years early that allows me to keep my afro Latina!! Hunter eventually finds this group that has naturally traveled up into where the british are setting up their first settlements in Virginia and joins them for reasons I can not explain!

THANK YOU for letting me ramble about all this rich history it is incredible.

ALSO I love trans Hunter HC and I do a lot of it myself but in this comic Hunter is cisgender. ( BUT seriously if you wanna hc Hunter as trans in my story I would love it -- trans fem or masc because Hunter is one of the transest coded characters ever) Because both him and Luz are attracted to the same and opposite sex I will still be able to explore certain LGBTQIA+ issues as well!

(DISCLAIMER : Listen I completely understand if this switching around might feel tone deaf to some people but I do not intend to shy away from the brutality of the past or give it a nicer spin -- but this is not a comic focused on the nitty gritty details of the world that Luz and Hunter come from but a focus on the nastiness that comes from later in their lives in Gravesfeild and the witch trials. To have this happen and keep all characters relatively the same I had to do a lot of background but It is worth it to keep these characters with their integrity intact)

Nobody knows her name but Caleb — they all just call her empress including him until they’re alone. She says that she doesn’t tell anyone because it might be bad for her family to be related to the governing body. Willow does play a part but I’ve been keeping a lot secret since I am STILL making a comic okay it’s coming I’m not giving up!!

Okay to address everything else — I’m so on the ground that you like my art of these little losers that much! That you’ve come back to look multiple times makes my insides all goey I love to hear that the feeling of munching on cardboard or twisting them like a hand towel (which lemme tell you is a great visualization i love it!!) makes its way to you. When I draw them I try my best to just feel that feeling the whole way through. They’re my favorite pair from the show they’re just!!! Little bugs when you pick up a rock!! As someone who does not nor has ever really read much about BNHA can you please explain what exactly is happening? Genuinely curious

I am so sorry Anon!! I’ve probably been flooding your feed with lots of crazy posts! If you know the main character Izuku Midoriya and his childhood friend Katsuki Bakugou they had a just heartbreakingly beautiful 400 or so chapters of apologies and repentance and possession and protection (BKG bullied Izuku when they were kids and has been trying to make up for it for at least over two hundred chapters now) and it’s been foreshadowed FOREVER that they were going to finally get on the same page and beat back the main villain together (it’s especially foreshadowed that they will hold hands to accomplish this) AND THEY FUCKING HELD HANDS WHILE BEATING THE VILLAN. Now obviously I’ve shipped them for a…oooh long time. Since they started to be on the same pg and it looked like BKG was going to apologize. And man the bkdk shippers have done a lot of theorizing over the years that this is what was going to happen but we’ve been beat back so many times telling us that their relationship isn’t critical or that they hate each other so this moment!!! Is so incredibly amazing to me!!!!!!!!!!!

What is King's deal in your AU? Is he four hundred years old and Luz and Hunter met him way back when or is he the same age as canon and got found by Empress Luz recently?

A little of both? In TOH canon King has to be thousands of years old already since his dad dies while King is in his egg -- but also Bill said that he saw the last Titan "with its piercing roar..." which was King's dad defending King which he heard inside the egg so does that make the Iles much younger than we thought or does that make Bill older than he looks or does that make King much older or about as young as he appears???? I don't know if the toh writers really thought that through super well tbh. In this version of TOH Titans spend around a thousand years in their egg before hatching and then have incrimental growth and physiologically developmental spurts every 100 or so years after hatching. King hatched around 100 years before Luz and Hunter are born in 1600 -- neither of them ever met King back then because he was still in the tower. Modern day Luz and Caleb meet King in a super spoilery way so I can't say. Luz looks after King and I'll say that their relationship is a sort of swap with King and the Collector who also still exists. Although I don't think he'll be part of their story.

I remember you said to remind you about your Unwelcome comic and I just want to say I really do like it. I know you read about some people taking it the wrong way but I believe throughout the story you showed what it was meant to be about, about Hunter's past and pain and how it still lurks inside him, how he slips into his persona as the golden guard when he can't take it anymore and how he hates being it. I really do believe it is worth finishing. If you have other projects you love more work on those, art should be about what you like and what you can express, these words may not be much but I do mean them from the bottom of my heart, take care ahobit, I look forward to whatever you do

Hey! I adore your work.

I was curious if you were discontinuing Unwelcome due to the responses from the last comic.

It was so very well done and heartbreaking, but jeez did some folks read that poorly.

Heyoooo! SO idk. I think the response made me kind of revaluate the work I was creating and if I was doing it right? I had two kinds of bigger controvercies back to back that sapped a lot of my fun out of the toh fandom as a whole. My heart breaks thinking of leaving everyone on the edge of their seats but I was supremely disappointed with the larger community. My larger hyper fixation has mostly passed and my life has kind of moved into bigger things at the moment but I'm never going to say I'll put it away fully. I think honestly that eventually I'll finish it up over a few months and just turn off comments maybe? I've said a few times that hearing your comments good or bad tends to be what fuels me but if its making me not want to continue working at all I can't see how that can help me...maybe instead of multiple updates maybe a last "master" update of the last 8-10 ish pages so that everyone can see the full vision?? Lots of possibilities.

Especially Unwelcome it's been kind of my baby over the past year now and seeing all the positive feedback really made me bully through a lot of hard times to continue working on it. I personally really resonate with the story that I was telling and from some feedback could tell that other people raised similarly had a connection with the comic as well-- which just fyi was SO touching. I am extraordinarily bad with words and had never really tried to draw a full comic before so that was certainly an experience I will never forget.

Hi hey just stumbled upon your toh switch au posts and got instantly hooked on the idea, could you give me a rundown of it? I don't have time to look through all the posts but I'm super curious about it ;-;

Lol there’s not that many posts tbh and It definitely helps the explanation to have visual context but I don’t mind explaining. Cant give a full explanation because I’ve been working on a comic! Glad you’re curious! It’s a real fun AU to work on.

Luz and Hunter are born around 1600 in early America. They meet when she is around 7 and he is around 9. They are not blood related but do end up being adopted brother and sister. After they both become orphans they end up in Gravesfeild and stay there permanently for a few years. Luz and Hunter have a loving but strained relationship. Hunter believes that to protect the only family he has left he’s got to be fearless and tireless. Luz is oblivious to the struggle of her brother and finds herself confused and upset at his sudden personality change. She wants to help him but he won’t let her. What kind of sister does that make her?

In the time skip it’s the early 2000s. 400 years have passed and the Iles has a new Empress — Luz and a right hand Golden Guard Caleb. Caleb doesn’t wander from his mentor or the castle often but on a coincidental day out saves a human boy from getting killed (Philip). Ages not specified. Caleb meets Evelyn a few years later even though the Empress has given him strict orders to never go near her or the opposite side of the Iles. He befriends her and falls for her much to his own confliction. He loves his guardian but now often has to break her trust. How can he call himself her protector if he isn’t there for her?

Yep Hahahah! One of my favorites!! I love to think of Caleb being the most annoying but sweet older brother you’ve ever seen. Hunter messes with Luz but Luz messes back. Philip doesn’t know what makes a good tease vs a over the line tease but Caleb is the master at taking Philip from the oh so mighty to the kid he is by constantly poking and prodding him especially about his dating life.

What do you think of "Good Person/Parent Belos" aus?

Honestly I never really had an opinion on them until the other day really. I get where people are coming from definitely with the “we shouldn’t be showcasing an abuser as a ‘good person’ or a good parent because they aren’t and that basically gives them a pass for genocide” and It definitely depends on the AU specifically. Phillip being a completely different good person from the start I don’t believe is bad — it’s more of a “man I wish this horrible person wasn’t horrible and killed all those people”. The only ones I’m a little iffy on are ones where he’s committed serious acts already and realized suddenly that he’s wrong.

Idk. I’m not a chief expert on how portrayals of genocidal maniacs effect the public. I find some of them interesting because of how much I really want to believe that people can be saved but it’s a pretty naive way to view things. Some people are born broken. Some people become broken. Broken in a way that can never be “fixed”.

But also? This is fiction.

If you wanted to write a good version of John Wayne Gacy or Stalin I’d tell you to see a therapist but fictional people aren’t real. They may be based on real people but their existence as a character has not physically or mentally harmed anyone. They are a little ball of clay that you stick a personality onto and make do things. They exist as far as your own imagination.

I don’t personally like Philip Wittebane. I think he’s one of the best written characters ever but I don’t like him. For me he’s a bad person no matter how much you spin it. Sometimes I like to draw the “Philip Wittebane” I thought Luz would meet but it isn’t based on Bellos at all and is more for Luz to have a good time and Caleb and Evelyn to live life than it is an opportunity for him to have a normal life. To “Win”.

And truly it’s none of my beeswax what other people want to make AUs about. I got pretty fucking fired at for doing my own thing and I DONT LIKE HIM?? Literally that shit was so frustrating.

Some people feel very strongly about how portrayals effect the idea of “genocide” or “murder” we have in our heads — makes it seem better or more forgivable. And that’s valid as fuck.

But none of this is real?? Agh. It’s a hard topic to speak on and I’m not my therapist.

Look, as long as it’s not disgusting or disrespectful I feel like it’s whatever. Do you own thing but just be mindful that you may sit your ass on the fire. Rightfully or not is not my decision to make.
