Episode 470: Nonsense about names
Part One. Roger/ Joshua Much to her surprise, well-meaning governess Vicki Winters came unstuck in time in #365 and found herself in the year 1795. She spent the first few weeks of her sojourn in the past telling all the characters she met about the other roles that their actors played in the first 73 weeks of Dark Shadows, thereby puzzling them and irritating the audience. After a few months,…

I’m struck during this viewing by the bittersweet sadness of Burke trying to get back with Laura at the same time he’s falling in love with Vicki.
It’s a thematic well the show will go back to again and again: living too much in the past can rob you of your present and future. If you could go back and change the past, you might solve some problems but you would create others.
On a personal note, it’s very satisfying to watch this knowing that Mitchell Ryan was able to overcome the problems that interfered with his work and go on to have a long career in the business. Maybe not the career he might have had, but certainly a body of work to be proud of.

During that time, Laura tried to rebuild her relationship with her son by Roger, strange and troubled boy David. David’s well-meaning governess Vicki at first encouraged her charge to go to his mother, but…

Episode 461: Crosses in life
Nineteen weeks ago, well-meaning governess Vicki disappeared from a séance in the drawing room of the great house at Collinwood and found herself in the year 1795. Her miserable failure to adapt to her new surroundings led to her conviction on charges of witchcraft. At the end of Friday’s episode, we attended her hanging. Today we begin with an unusually long opening voiceover. These typically…

Episode 455: Old enough now
In Dark Shadows #316, broadcast and set in September 1967, strange and troubled boy David Collins (David Henesy) escaped from the hidden chamber in the Collins family mausoleum, only to find himself in the clutches of his distant cousin, Barnabas the vampire. He was spared from Barnabas’ murderous intentions when local man Burke Devlin happened by. Today’s episode was broadcast in March 1968 and…

Episode 478: Carried on the wind
Soap operas usually have multiple more or less independent storylines going simultaneously. Dark Shadows had trouble keeping that up, usually having an A story with all the action and a B story that never got off the ground and eventually dried up altogether. Now, in the spring of 1968, they have several equally dynamic arcs going at once. As a result, today’s episode is a bit of a jumble, as we…

Episode 471: Be quiet, Harry!
The opening teaser is a reprise of the last scene of Friday’s episode. Dr Eric Lang is trying to convince his patient, recovering vampire Barnabas Collins, to participate in an experiment he wants to start. He addresses him as “Barnabas Barnabas.” It had been a quirk of Barnabas’ previous physician, Julia Hoffman, to repeat Barnabas’ first name, and as Julia, Grayson Hall manages to put a fresh…

Episode 466: Four o'clock in the afternoon
At the end of Friday’s episode, the well-meaning Vicki Winters was driving her car and bickering irritably with her passenger, Barnabas Collins the vampire. Barnabas wants to elope with her, which she doesn’t object to doing. But first she insists on running an errand in his old neighborhood, the deserted cemetery north of town, and he hates that idea. A pedestrian wandered into the middle of…
