I would love to be proven wrong here, but my hopes for episode 9 are low because I absolutely hated the ending of episode 8. There was NO narrative reason for that stupid misunderstanding. Alicent already has very good reasons to challenge Rhaenyra's claim. One, Alicent's children are in danger as long as Rhaenyra pursues the throne because they pose a threat to Rhaenyra's (very legitimate) claim. Two, Rhaenyra is essentially committing high treason by trying to make an obviously illegitimate child the heir to the throne. As much as it sucks, those are the rules of this society. Rhaenyra is breaking all of them and has so far largely been shielded from the consequences because of her power and privilege. Alicent on the other hand has no choice but to work within the system and perpetuate the patriarchal status quo that has made her life miserable, because that's the only way for her and her children to survive. It feels like a truthful look into why some women rebel against the patriarchy while others are either forced by circumstance into perpetuating it, or choose to do so because it better serves their personal ambitions. In the case of Alicent, it's a combination of both.
And making this all about a stupid misunderstanding about some stupid prophecy feels like the writers not trusting the audience to pick up on or care about that nuance. Thanks, I hate it.
