Cirinelle and Vardeau are buying a horse.
It's for their brother, Anton, they explain to the stable master. His former steed, Allucius, perished bravely in a siege on an Oblivion Gate almost one month prior. Anton was understandably distraught, Allucius had been his companion for three years, since the very start of the Daedric invasion. His moping around Cloud Ruler Temple and his refusal to engage with anybody was hard to watch for Ciri, and was just beginning to get on Vardeau's nerves. Ciri understandably wanted to nip that situation in the bud before it escalated.
The stable master walks the pair through the stable, stopping at each horse for Ciri to ask a hundred questions about its stock, what to feed it, how fast it goes, and how likely it is to kick someone in the head. Vardeau leans on a post and crosses their arms, resigned to the fact that they're destined at least another hour in this barn before making a purchase.
Ciri finally settles on a Cheydin paint, coloured white and brown. A brief discussion of price later and Ciri signs the papers and hands over a satchel of coin.
"Thank you very much for your purchase, Captains Vernace. Might I interest you in some horse armour?" the stable master asks.
"I beg your pardon?" Ciri asks.
"Horse armour," he repeats. "For the horse. It comes at an extra cost, but I assure you it's worth it."
Ciri and Vardeau share a quick glance.
"...No, no thank you, I think we're quite alright." Ciri says, as politely as she can.
Cirinelle and Vardeau set out on their way back to Cloud Ruler Temple, perplexed as to why anyone would purchase armour for a horse.

Pieter Jozef Verhaghen - Magnanimity of Scipio Africanus -
The Continence of Scipio, or The Clemency of Scipio, is an episode recounted by Livy of the Roman general Scipio Africanus during his campaign in Spain during the Second Punic War. He refused a generous ransom for a young female prisoner, returning her to her fiance Allucius, who in return became a supporter of Rome. In recognition of his magnanimous treatment of a prisoner, he was taken as one of the prime examples of mercy during warfare in classical times. Interest in the story revived in the Renaissance and the episode figured widely thereafter in both the literary and figurative arts.
Pieter-Jozef Verhaghen (19 March 1728 in Aarschot – 3 April 1811 in Leuven) was a Flemish painter of large-scale religious and mythological scenes. He is regarded as the last representative of the so-called Flemish School of painting. In particular, he is seen as continuing the artistic tradition of Flemish Baroque painting as exemplified by Rubens in the late 18th century and into the 19th century. He was highly regarded during his lifetime and enjoyed the patronage of eminent patrons and religious institutions. He was appointed first court painter to Empress Maria Theresa of Austria who also provided him a stipend to travel abroad to further his artistic studies.
