Obligatory introductory post for my YTTD Swap AU

So for the past couple weeks I’ve been cooking up some ideas for a swap AU. Basically the main idea is that Ryoko Hirose is the protagonist (I know she only gets like two minutes of screentime, but she’s my blorbo okay), and a lot of the other main characters are ones that didn’t get as much time to shine in the actual game. Information on the main 12 swaps, some notes for each character, and a few silly doodles under the cut!

Basically, the format of this will be that Character A > (takes the place of) Character B. So it’s not necessarily that two characters swap with each other, but Character A would swap with Character B, Character B would swap with Character C, and so on… These are mainly role swaps, but there are slight changes to characters’ personalities as well.

Ryoko Hirose > Sara Chidouin

- Ryoko is the protagonist.

- She and Joe swap places at the beginning of the game; Ryoko is the one to walk Sara home on the night of the kidnapping.

- Compared to Sara, Ryoko is a lot more of an extroverted and cheerful protagonist. She also has less patience, though, so she gets a bit exhausted putting up with the antics of the other participants and convincing everyone to work together.

- Because of her headstrong personality, Ryoko drags down Sara’s 15.5% win rate even more than Joe did. While this prevents Sara from becoming like she did in the AI test runs, it also significantly lessens Sara’s chances of survival, which ends up becoming an issue for her.

Sara Chidouin > Joe Tazuna

- Sara acts as the partner or “buddy” character for the majority of Chapter 1’s events.

- She’s quite similar to her canon personality, so really the biggest change when it comes to her is her dynamic with the other participants.

- Sara ends up drawing the Sacrifice card. When she learns what this means for her, she is understandably freaked out — during the first Main Game, her initial plan is to trick everyone so that she and Ryoko can escape alive.

- However, she isn’t able to go through with it. She doesn’t want to betray everyone, and she doesn’t want Ryoko to have to bear that guilt as well. Because of this, she ends up meeting her demise.

- With Sara gone, the overarching Death Game begins to take a different turn. While Ryoko is quite outspoken, she doesn’t have the same leader-like personality Sara has, and as such the participants are more disorganized.

Kai Satou > Keiji Shinogi

- Kai is the more overarching partner character for this AU, working to assist Ryoko.

- He’s still an assassin trained by Asunaro and he still watches over the Chidouin family. He also still tries to protect Sara, following her and Ryoko home on the night of the kidnapping.

- The main differences with Kai come from the fact that Sei survives through childhood in this universe. As a result, Kai is not as closed off, more open to showing his emotions to others.

- In the first Main Game, both Sei and Sara die, and Kai is absolutely wracked with grief over it. He definitely gets a lot worse off after this point for a while, consumed with guilt over the loss of his sibling and the girl he vowed to protect.

- Him and Ryoko end up bonding a lot, though, both because she’s a sweetheart and because they have to struggle through the loss of people they loved.

Kugie Kizuchi > Gin Ibushi

- Kugie plays the role of the “secondary” partner character, not playing quite as heavy a hand in the events of the plot but still being an important character, both to Ryoko and in general.

- She and Kanna get kidnapped together still, but Kanna is the one who ends up with the key in the First Trial. She decides to unlock Kugie’s restraints, but Kugie is unable to save Kanna before the time runs out.

- At the beginning of the Death Game, Kugie acts very uncooperative, unresponsive to the others’ attempts to get information out of her or to help her.

- When she starts coming out of her shell again, her personality is more of the independent, no-nonsense type. She’s very supportive and helpful to the people who want to work together, especially bonding with Ryoko and some of the more scared/vulnerable participants, but she can also be quite vicious to those who are antagonistic to the general group or are purposely hiding information.

- Essentially, the ‘cool’ older-sister type, who acts tough but is kind of a bleeding heart.

Sei Satou > Kai Satou

- Sidenote: Sei uses they/them pronouns in this AU! (because they are so very gender to me)

- In this universe, Sei survives past the events of the Kai mini episode, with Asunaro deciding there’s no better way to determine who the best assassin is than pitting Kai and Sei against each other in a Death Game (yay…).

- Upon learning the news, Gashu reacts similarly to how he does in the mini ep, starting to train Kai more and more while Sei gets left in the dust. Because of this, Sei ends up harboring a lot of unspoken resentment towards those two.

- As the two assassins grow up together, Kai is still unable to carry out his missions of killing others, and eventually Asunaro deems him unfit to be a part of the Death Game. Although, they never get the chance to dispose of him so-to-speak, as Kai ends up worming his way into the Death Game anyways through his attempt to protect Sara.

- During the Death Game, Sei initially acts cold to Kai, feeling scorned by their family because Kai is the clearly favored child. While the two do eventually reconcile, it ends up being too late, as Sei draws the Sage card and is executed during the first Main Game.

- I imagine Sei’s personality here would be a weird mix of child Sei’s and Ranger’s, perhaps akin to what Rio Laizer would’ve acted like if we saw more than…a few minutes of them. They act brash and childish, but under the surface they do care deeply about others and are really only yearning for attention.

Kazumi Mishima > Q-taro Burgerberg

- Mishima ends up surviving for a lot longer in this AU! He takes a general mentor role for the group, being as many of the participants are only children.

- He acts similar for the first part of the game, until the Second Trial where Nao dies instead of him. He’s devastated over losing one of his students, but he handles the grief a lot differently from Nao, taking more of an ‘escapist’ route where he tries to ignore the reality of the situation so he can stay strong for the others.

- Overall, his personality is pretty similar to his canon self. After Nao’s death, he bonds a lot with Kugie (the only other person who’s lost someone at that point), and the two try their best to encourage the other to take care of themselves.

Maple > Reko Yabusame

- Maple is a human in this AU! Because it’d be a little weird if her name was still just “Maple,” I’ve made it so that her real name is Mari Miyake, and Maple is just a nickname she prefers to go by.

- Her occupation is as a maid, and she works at the Tsurugi family’s bakery, essentially as Mai’s assistant.

- From Asunaro’s observations of her, they come to the conclusion that she would not sign the consent form on her own, and they would instead need to target someone close to her. They threaten Mai and her family’s safety, telling her to persuade Maple into signing the form or else.

- Because it’s now coming from someone she trusts, Maple ends up signing the consent form and is eventually whisked away to the Death Game.

- Personality-wise, Maple is a very kind and sweet person, trying to bond with even the ‘outcasts’ and scolding the younger participants if they place too large a burden on themselves. She gets along the most with Hinako, and acts as an older-sister figure to her.

Hinako Mishuku > Alice Yabusame

- The Hinako in this AU is the REAL Hinako (AKA the one with black hair). She survives her First Trial because she gets paired with Maple instead of Alice, and Maple is adamant on working with her so that they can both get out alive (which they do).

- After she gets out of her First Trial, Hinako is at a loss for what to do. Originally content to lay down her own life, now that she’s survived she feels indebted to the girl who risked her own life to save her.

- Eventually, much like Alice, she hides inside the locker in the Red Room after she hears gunshots from the Russian Roulette minigame, unsure of her surroundings and who she can trust. Ryoko ends up finding her.

- Initially, Hinako is very shy and apathetic, mostly clinging onto Maple for safety. Over the course of the Death Game she gains the courage to start sticking up for others, and tries to assist the group in whatever ways she can.

Nao Egokoro > Kazumi Mishima

- The Nao in this AU is more based off her aged-up design from YTTS. Basically, she’s older and a bit more mature, now out of art school and working as a painter. She tries to offer guidance to others for the time that she’s alive.

- Unfortunately, she does not last very long, becoming the first casualty of the main cast in the Second Trial. (I feel cruel for this, especially because I love Nao so much, but I really thought the swap with her and Mishima was interesting :((( )

Ranmaru Kageyama > Nao Egokoro

- Ranmaru survives his First Trial in this AU, becoming a prevalent supporting character throughout the Death Game. He gets along well with Ryoko, partnering up with her for the first investigation.

- All in all, there isn’t too much to say without spoiling later parts of the AU (he plays a much bigger part in the second chapter’s events) because he’s pretty similar to his canon self, but the most interesting part to me here is to see him go through the events he never got to see canonly.

Shin Tsukimi > Kanna Kizuchi

- Shin technically takes Kanna’s place here, but if I’m being real he acts pretty damn similar to his canon self as well. The most I could say is that he acts more like a constantly-agitated Shin rather than a full-on Sou copycat, but he’s still rather antagonistic in nature.

- He still sees his 0.0% percentage, and still takes on the Sou Hiyori alias, but things get more complicated when he realizes the real Sou Hiyori is also a participant in this game.

- Sou and Shin have a more favorable relationship in this universe, and so ultimately the two end up working together (a sort of antagonist duo? i guess?). The consensus is that the two of them ‘swap’ identities, with Shin pretending to be Sou and Sou pretending to be Shin. That way, Shin can still act out his plan to evade his ‘certain death.’

- His behavior mostly stays the same over the course of the first chapter’s events, although he actually is the Keymaster in the first Main Game, which leads to him taking a more prominent role in the discussion and not being mistrusted quite as much (though he still is mistrusted).

- After Sara’s death, he’s admittedly confused knowing her super high percentages. Because of this, his suspicion moves more towards Ryoko, Sara’s mysterious friend who happened not to have a win rate listed at all.

Sou Hiyori > Shin Tsukimi

- This universe’s Sou is mildly softer than his canon counterpart. I say mildly because he’s still rather murderous, but he isn’t entirely apathetic to the plight of the other people trapped in the Death Game (and actually ends up bonding with a few of them!).

- As another sidenote, Sou is never ‘murdered’ by Alice here (and Alice never goes to jail), and he is actually still 100% human.

- Basically, much like Kai, Sou ultimately betrays Asunaro, although his reasons for doing so are a bit different. Asunaro refuses to let Sou participate in the Death Game, already having plans for him as a floormaster. This is the initial spark leading to his betrayal, but there are other reasons as well (I could get more into it here, but the post is already super long and most of this doesn’t come into play until much later in the story. …I’ll save that post for a rainy day)

- Sou is very much ride-or-die for Shin and tries to sway the outcomes of the game so he can survive for longer. In the first chapter, this includes screwing around with the role cards so Shin “incidentally” finds the Keymaster card and Sara “incidentally” finds the Sacrifice card.

- Sou tries to take on the persona of Shin Tsukimi, acting sweet and innocent with the other participants. While this certainly fools a good chunk of them, those who are more perceptive can tell that something is Not right with this guy.

- Additionally, Kai and Sei already know who Sou is in this universe and that he’s affiliated with Asunaro. Because the three of them all have ties to the organization, they basically form a deal of “I won’t tell if you don’t tell” for the time being. That being said, the Satou siblings still do not trust Sou at all.

Ok WOW this was a long post I am so sorry. I needed to spew out all my brainrot because this has been plaguing me for weeks. That being said, I plan to make more content for this AU in the future when I have the time, including lots of dumb art. If any of y’all find interest in this idea, feel free to ask me any questions about this AU! It’s still in its baby stages so things are definitely prone to change overtime, but I’ll be glad to give the best answers I can ^_^

favorite thing about them: when i was a kid the kirb/zetto twist did genuinely make me insane. in a good way. i think hes a really fascinating character in his like...Mentality Switches between personas yk. guy whos a jerk in a funny way vs guy who just actually sucks

least favorite thing about them: honestly i wish it was just made more clear during like episode zero or smth what his stance in sofdti as like....a living thang was? not that it would matter much in the grand scheme of his development but idk kizuna said some SHIT yk

favorite line: id probably say like...a lot of stuff from the nylocke battle in the gemini tournament. absolute lowest point of that guy its really interesting. (obligatory MY ARM AAAAAGHHHHH mention purely because holy shit he was screaming)

brotp: HIM AND GAMESOFT oh my godd them together. aughh. the only two guys who Know the guys who can talk abt shit and he can be sad. solace in understanding and so on

otp: i know its basic but like....alphazet mannn. everything abt the two of them was PAINFULLY gay and its honestly kind of funny kirb (the guy not the character) didnt notice. runner up is him and nylocke becahse i just think they are silly and funny

notp: i dont really have anyone with him that i actively LOATHE but i think its probbably him and kizuna. putting my personal gay zetto hc aside i think theyd both be wayy too codependent unless they got like. therapy. i know a lot of what ive been saying so far makes it sound like i hate kizuna but i dont i PROMISE

random headcanon: i feel like postseries hed find a way to set gs up with a virtual machine desktop of her own so her knowledge of the world can extend beyond what she knows in tome. they spend time bonding over computer science n junk :)

unpopular opinion: im honestly never good at this part but as an adult with better drawing skills now...i actually like drawing his hair

song i associate with them: zetto was never someone i had much of a playlist for back in the day so i had to scrounge a bit but i think i found something satisfactory

favorite thing about them: REALLY underrated secondary antagonist, interesting moral code, she has insane girlie guilt over her actions that doesnt get explored enough.....and shes a kitty cat :)

least favorite thing about them: her arc in the original series was like...a little inconclusive? i wish she couldve come to terms with sofdtis sentience and whatnot. the trajectory of a2z is changing her in a way im really liking so far though! im excited to see where she goes

favorite line: that whole rant at the tail end of the series where shes just like. a bunch of people she cared about almost died and she was freaking the fuck out. it hurts....i love her she needs THERAPYY

brotp: she doesnt get to interact with too many characters during the series but in my perfect world i think shed be chill with demonking. dont question my madness i know im right

otp: re the previous answer she doesnt interact with a lot of characters, on this note Especially im hesitant to give a definitive answer but i think if her parallels with flamey were more explored...in my perfect world.........theyd work so spicily

notp: same as zetto but also tacking gs onto this. less out of kizunas ability to see her as a person currently and more that in the future if/when she does end up coming around i do feel like gs would still be hurt by it. theyd be buddies tho:)

random headcanon: with the rpg version of tigerlily i sometimes wish that series kizuna had like...a secret lil roleplay presence. not necessarily on tome itself but she has to cool of SOMEHOW right. she made an anime catgirl avatar i KNOW she has thoughts about that shit

unpopular opinion about them: kizuna is probably the most divisive character ive done for this so far...all i can really say is like...i joke about supporting womens wrongs and stuff but i think introspectively she does have a lot of potential as a character that we dont see a lot of because most of the scenes with her are from zettos perspective. AGAIN tho im reallly liking where a2z is taking her so far i hope i get more scraps

some thoughts about artem, the value of work and duty, and emotional neglect

wc: 1k

slight spoilers for details revealed in main story 6.1 and several artem card stories. obligatory disclaimer that these r just my own thoughts and interpretations

i really found bryan wing super interesting because of his SUPER OP POSITION, ON THE FRIGGING SUPREME COURT (thats the whole country, THE WHOLE!!!) but also the fact that this is Literally the first time we have ever head of him across the entire main plot and, if im not mistaken, all card stories.

like, artem's mom is mentioned here and there (in SSR Por Una Cabeza, mentioned as well in another card i cant rmr where mc says artem's mom was her thesis adviser) but artem's dad? nothing. nada. zilch. it's cuz of this, i had the impression and hc that bryan wing was just Not Really Present in artem's life, and when i read his big data lab entry this one bit explains why p well

Ever since he became part of the Supreme Court, Bryan spends most of his time at the capital, returning to Stellis only in the spring.

//bangs gavel on the table court thingy, bryan wing was mostly absent for artem's life: vaguely canon.

only coming home in the spring and most probably busy as hell even when he did come home, i suspect he didnt have much time to spend with artem. while kimberly stayed in stellis and was supposedly more present, she was also probs similarly busy. shes got a doctorate by 2030 and if im going backwards, that means she was either doing masters degree or her doctorate degree during artem's childhood. at some point, she also became ASSISTANT DEAN of the law dept at stellis uni like, maam, girlboss moves tbh. but also, again, TIME. ive got a renowned practitioner doctorate haver mother myself, and when she was working on her degree back when i was a kid, she was.....not there very much. achievements take time, and they also take some time away from family. nothing wrong with that of course, but the absence causes consequences, no matter how the parent didnt mean for it to happen.

the most present adult during artem's pre-adult (and adult) era was neil hume. how artem talks about neil and that one flashback scene we get with neil actually there rlly brought it home that these two were close, they mean a LOT to each other, and rlly imparts the impression that neil was something of father figure to artem as well. but neil wasnt perfect either. neil had to bail on artem as well for work (key detail mentioned in SSR Loving Memories) and given that neil is also renowned as hell (professor, doctoral advisor) and is noted in big data lab entry to "[travel] extensively alone for his commitments to serving the public" and also "had a history of going dark to infiltrate crime organizations" hes damn busy with work as well.

and all this sounds lonely as hell for artem. all the important adults in his development years were either largely absent or still had to go off elsewhere, all due to their respective work. this kind of stuff, i think, causes a bunch things

here are the ones clear in canon

artem seeing work, productivity, and duty as huge virtues. the important adults in his life regarded it very highly, so it's logical that he values these virtues as well.

artem then pursuing these own traits diligently in his later life because it now matters to him a lot. workaholic extraordinaire who keeps going and struggles to not think of work matters or unable to relax when hes supposed to be relaxing, sometimes to the point of frigging INSOMNIA (main conflict in SSR Dreamful Melodies, this card stressed me out so much cuz //shakes artem by the shoulders, PLS SLEEP)

here are the ones where im speculating and/or making hcs

artem pursuing those values for a secondary reason too: the rewards of work become the closest thing to emotional validation hes comfortable accepting. people are busy, people cant always make time, people cant always be paying attention to him and he understands that but emotional validation is a human need and since work has become a value, its payoff is not only more feasibly acquirable, in his eyes, but also close enough to what he wants, he thinks (spoiler: it's not! it's a completely different thing!!! AAAAA)

and lastly, artem thinking it's okay to not pay attention to him as a person. there are more important things in this world. his feelings, in the grand scheme of things, takes its place several notches under the bigger things in this world

pre-entrance-of-MC-into-his-life, it's pretty sad. what artem essentially ends up doing to himself the same thing the adults in his life did to him; focusing on duty to the point that he himself neglects his wants.

this manifests his emotional repression and hesitation (how can he be honest and forward about how he feels when time and time again, those feelings didnt get proper attention?) and vaguely low self esteem (how can he feel sure about himself as a person and the value of his inherent personality without emotional validation strengthening a good view of who he is?).

this kinda reminds me of this one post i saw once that went along the lines of "in my mind, theres a little girl yelling "UNLOVED!! UNLOVED!!!!!"" and that image feels fitting for artem too with some tweaks. in his mind, theres a younger version of himself but that kid isnt yelling. hes just sitting in his room quietly and nobody outside opens the door, not even artem himself. and artem leaves him alone.

and all of that hammers it home how important mc's presence in his life is. whether it progresses into a romantic relationship or continues as a platonic one, mc eventually sees artem under the work, duty, productivity.

she goes over to stand outside of the door of that room in artem's mind nobody enters

and she knocks, asking if it's okay for her come in.

Arc V and My Hero Academia for the anime ask meme!

Yu-Gi-Oh! Arc V:

don’t watch period| drop if not interested within 2-3 episodes| give it a go, could be your thing| 5 star recommendation

fav characters: There are so many characters in this series that I love. Yuya is still my favorite character in the franchise, Yuzu’s determination is terrific, Yugo is always fun, Reira’s development was a wonderful surprise, Reiji is a wonderfully refreshing rival, Serena is cool and tough, Gongenzaka is just an awesome best friend type of character, Zarc is still my favorite final villain and Dennis’s development is both interesting and emotional. I could just go on about all of these characters even longer since they’re all so likable and interesting.

least fav characters: I think it would be Yuri. It’s mainly because he was just the hammy over the top secondary villain for most of the series. That does make him entertaining, but it didn’t make him too interesting. His backstory helped, but it felt a bit too little, too late. It also probably doesn’t help that they him defeat a ton of characters within a relatively short amount of time in order to hype him up further for his duel with Yuya.

I didn’t care much for Sawatari either, although I think I’ve warmed up a bit on him. I just didn’t like how self-centered he was. He came off as a cocky jerk and it showed in his dueling. He wanted to entertain the crowd, but he wanted the attention all for himself. It also didn’t help that people got on my case for preferring Yuya’s Entertainment Dueling over Sawatari. Not to mention they kept saying that his development made him automatically better than other characters. People getting on my case for liking or disliking a character in this series is practically a theme onto itself. I’m somewhat surprised that didn’t happen with Yuto, especially when my feelings for him changed as the series progressed. I still like Yuto, but he went from one of my favorites to just okay partly due to how overhyped I think he was. People were acting as if he was the main character instead of Yuya, calling Yuya the Standard Yuto and even claiming that the outcome of the series would somehow be better if Yuto absorbed Yuya instead and just flat out became the main character. I still generally like Yuto, but that kind of attitude does impact how I see him too.

fav relationship: I love Yuya and Yuzu’s relationship so much. Whether you see their relationship as romantic or platonic, I think that it’s clear that they do love each other. The group friendship between Yuya, Yuzu, Gongenzaka is so great. Yuya, Yuzu and Sora’s friendship is so wonderful too. Yugo and Rin are my second favorite pairing in the series. I love Yuya and Jack’s friendship so much and how they grow to respect each other. Yuya and Ed’s friendship is pretty great too.

fav moment: There are so many great moments in the series, but I’d still have to go with Yuya vs. Jack round two. That was just such a fantastic duel. Whenever I think about that match, Yuya getting the crowd to duel alongside him, Jack happily accepting defeat with a smile and raising Yuya’s arm as the victor at the end, I can’t help but feel happier inside and out.

headcanons/theories: I still like the idea of the original Zarc being within Yuya. There wouldn’t be enough of him to where Yuya could talk to him, but he’d still get more of his memories over time. The Zarc in Reira is kind of another fragment of his demon self with traces of his original self. If Zarc was split apart into four pieces the first time, he could be split into five pieces the second time around.

unpopular opinion: I think that Yuzu doesn’t get nearly enough credit for effectively saving the world. I can understand people being upset that she didn’t get a duel in the third season. That was a disappointment for me too, but I feel like people also overlook that she still had an important role in the storyline and had significant impact on other characters even without dueling. It’s also one of the reasons why I hate it when people say that she became a plot device character. In my experience, plot device characters usually only have one important relationship with another character. While the show focused more on Yuya and Yuzu’s friendship once they were separated, she still affected other characters like Sora, Serena and Yugo. Her relationships with them, along with Shuzo, were pretty important too. I understand that people want more proactive female duelists in this franchise. We don’t have a lot of them, but I don’t think that’s the only way a character can contribute to the storyline.

how’d you find it: I’ve been watching the franchise for years and I watched it right after watching Zexal. I never made it passed the first season of the dub since I didn’t care for most of the voices or changes and I’d rather not get the two versions mixed up in my mind too.

random thoughts: I love this series so much. Even with the fanbase being problematic to say the least, it doesn’t affect my love for Arc V. I love so many characters, so many duels and so many moments. It celebrates the franchise while providing its own story at the same time. Arc V makes me appreciate that I’ve been a fan of the franchise all these years. It is a terrific series, easily my favorite series in the franchise and quite possibly my favorite toyetic series. I love Arc V so much.

My Hero Academia:

fav characters: Midoriya is so likable and you pretty much instantly want to root for him. Urarka is so sweet and I love her bubbly personality. Iida is pretty fun and his role in the Hero Killer arc made him more interesting. Todoroki is pretty cool and I like how his development was handled. All Might is just such a great likable mentor figure. Aizawa turned out to be a lot cooler than I expected, mainly due to his fight during the USJ attack in the first season.

least fav characters: Mineta is the obligatory answer, but that sexist pervert is indeed the worse. He might be the most one note character in the cast and Hagakure’s gag is being invisible. While I don’t think he’d be one of my least favorite characters anymore, my initial reaction to Bakugo was not good. I knew that he’d be the bully rival character, but I wasn’t expecting him to tell Midoriya to commit suicide in the first episode. His attitude in the first season in general, especially in his first fight against Midoriya, also hit a nerve. I’ve dealt with bullies who treat you like emotional punching bags and hit harder when they think that you’re better at them in something, which is basically what happened during that first combat training match. He does fortunately become more interesting as the series progressed and he was always surprisingly smart, but that initial negative reaction was still pretty intense.

fav relationship: I love Midoriya and All Might’s student/mentor relationship. It’s probably one of my favorite things about the series since they become like a father and son so quickly. I’m happy that I finally get all of the Dad Might jokes I would hear about before watching the series now. Their connection feels so genuine and sweet. The group friendship between Midoriya, Uraraka and Iida is wonderful. Their group dynamic is so great and sweet. Midoriya and Totoroki’s friendship is pretty great. While it feels a bit one-sided, I grew to like Bakugo and Kirashima’s friendship. Kirashmia’s concern over Bakugo when he was kidnapped and Bakugo paying him back afterwards made it a lot sweeter than I expected.

fav moment: I still love All Might telling Midoriya that he could become a hero. No matter how many times I see that moment, Midoriya crying is still so emotionally effective. The final blow during Midoriya and Todoroki’s fight in the Sports Festival was just amazing. The fight against the Hero Killer was pretty awesome. All Might hugging Midoriya after the fight against All For One was so emotional and touching. I wanted to see them hug since the Sports Festival arc and it finally happened, but at such a price.

headcanons/theories: I’m not sure if I have any at the moment. I still need to finish season three, so I might some once I finish that up.

unpopular opinion: I don’t really like the Midoriya and Bakugo pairing. I can kind of see why people would like it, but it just doesn’t appeal to me. I usually don’t like pairings where at least one of the characters don’t like the other one. Plus, after seeing Midoriya help Bakugo pass their final exam against All Might, I think that Midoriya is way too good for him.

how’d you find it: I heard about the manga and anime for awhile, but I didn’t watch it until it was on Toonami. I loved it pretty much from the first episode, watched it weekly through the first season and then I binged watched season two and most of season three within four days. I was enjoying the series too much to just watch it weekly when I could watch more right away. Plus, I didn’t want to accidentally spoil anything while looking up what to reblog, especially when a lot of people had already seen the first couple of seasons at least.

random thoughts: My Hero Academia is really good. It is definitely a shonen series and I don’t know if it breaks a lot of new ground compared to just executing familiar concepts really well, but either way, it is a lot of fun. The characters are likable, the fights are solid, the powers are cool, the setting is unique and the emotional moments are well earned. It is a great show and I’m glad that I finally started to watch it.

me realizing there’s twenty-one playable child units in fe4 second gen and thus exactly enough to assign each one an arcana in a persona au. you know what this means kids

it’s all under the cut with attempts at explanations. i know this isn’t rlly the most relevant thing to this blog, but i’ve written metas on characters that aren’t actually muses so i’m letting it slide. fe4 spoilers will be briefly touched upon for a few characters. the explanations are specifically for how the arcana are represented in persona, but please keep in mind i’m a persona scrub kdhfkdhfdfkfd so if it ends up being only specific to character arcs from p3, my bad. i’m also sticking to the standard cards and avoiding special ones like aeon. welcome to super self-indulgent hell

i did the order by recruitment order, but here’s a link to just the order of all the characters ( sans explanations ) by the actual tarot in case you just want to see that and be done with it

Seliph: The Fool

Obligatory protagonist role getting this arcana, but the Fool is generally based around one being influenced by others. Considering how Seliph is placed in a role as a liberator as thrust upon him by the people’s expectations due to his lineage, I thought it was fitting.

Lana: Priestess

Who I imagine would be the party’s initial navigator. Regardless, getting away from the strictly Persona gameplay aspects, the Priestess is an arcana given to quieter characters who have untapped potential. I generally just think Lana has the vibe for this as opposed to an actual reason.

Larcei: Temperance

This is one of the leftover ones admittedly. Temperance deals with an inability to balance one’s various life aspects. Larcei tends to be portrayed in adaptations as struggling between her combat as well as her love life, and she’s typically unlucky in the latter.

Ulster: Star

I love you Ulster, but he ended up also being one of the leftover ones as well. The Star is associated with hope and joy. There’s actually a pretty cool quote about this one in terms of bestowing help to others in their time of need but eventually being doomed to fall. Ulster is depicted as being protective of the others ( namely in Seliph’s childhood friend squad ) and is compassionate as well as a big brother type, thus I thought he matched up enough with the idea of bestowing help unto others.

Diarmuid: Strength

The Strength arcana in the Persona universe typically explores characters who have a strength of heart in order to keep going past hardships. Though almost everyone in gen 2 experiences tragedy and tries to overcome it, Diarmuid’s separation from his mother and then his consequent journey through Yied to reunite with his family stuck out to me. Additionally, he always seemed to have a good head on his shoulders even when given bad news in fe5 should you let Nanna fall in battle before he joins Leif’s party.

Lester: Sun

The Sun arcana directly deals with happiness, typically revolving around characters who are faced with miserable situations yet still try and be optimistic; alternatively, the character has lost their initial happiness. A really cool arcana in terms of character arcs, and Lester got it not because I thought it fit him, but because he was literally my last option and I thought the Sun arcana would fit him more than some other remaining ones, and a lot of the characters at this point I was dead set on keeping them locked in to the ones I chose for them. I initially gave this arcana to Lene.

I’d love to meet someone whose fav is Lester sdkhkddf I feel so bad that I don’t have a lot in terms of analysis on him.

Julia: Fortune

The one I knew I’d want the most for this arcana right away: the Fortune arcana revolves entirely around fate. The characters usually have to make a large decision and strive to seize their own destiny. Julia and Julius both have their births completely orchestrated for the sole purpose of furthering the Lopt Sect’s goals, their fates determined by their bloodlines. Julia rises up from what originally seemed like a helpless situation to being the one to restore peace to Jugdral herself. I literally can’t imagine anybody else, sans Julius, who could fit this arcana better out of the second gen cast.

Fee: Chariot

The Chariot arcana places an emphasis on striving towards a goal, holding a determined and willful spirit. Fee is another character I knew I instantly wanted for a specific arcana, as she’s fixated on finding her missing father-- especially when you take FE5 canon into mind and make her father Lewyn. She embodies both the arc ( willing to accomplish her goal no matter what ) but also the personality associated with the arcana.

Arthur: Magician

For starters, giving this arcana to an actual mage is so satisfying. In any case, the arcana is associated with somebody who takes more of a secondary role to the protagonist but still has their own ego. Additionally, great tragedy befalls and motivates the character-- though typically it’s romance-related in terms of arcs, but I ended up omitting that for this. Arthur is a character who exudes confidence, something that Fee suspects might not be well-deserved when they bicker, and his call to action revolves around his desire to reunite with his family. He’s aware terrible things befell his mother and sister and is terribly protective of his sister as a result. Tine honestly might get the shortest end of the stick out of the second gen cast in terms of horrible fates.

The LI manga adaptation also depicts Arthur as a shameless flirt that is a bit of a pervert, which also helps just strengthen the tie between him and the typical archetype for the Magician arcana character in the Persona series.

Iuchar: Moon

Even though you can’t recruit both of the Neir brothers in one run, I’m giving them different arcanas since I personally think that their character arcs in-game are different enough to warrant it and it gets me up to my perfect twenty-one number.

The Moon arcana revolves around illusions and typically involves a character seeing reality not as how it is, some going so far as to blame themself for something that isn’t true. My analysis on Iuchar touches upon the idea that he’s putting up his carefree personality as an act to be able to more easily show kindness upon Isaachians without arousing suspicion from his family; additionally, it talks about the idea that Iuchar blames himself for everything his family has done under the Empire and asks for forgiveness sincerely, not understanding how Seliph sees that Iuchar is blameless and that even if he wasn’t, the people love him already. Iuchar simply can’t see that reality. Though him being the actual canonically flirty character is a good argument to assign him the Magician arcana, I ultimately personally see the Moon arcana as more fitting for him.

Iucharba: Death

The Death arcana is about life cycles and predominantly characters undergoing a great change. Iucharba is a character I personally note for not really being taken seriously by his family as noted in this meta and he undergoes a great transformation throughout the events of Genealogy should you recruit him as a result. He begins as a young man allied with the Empire, a man sorely underestimated plenty, and he ends up developing into this character that suddenly is the heir to the Neir bloodline and consequently is now actually in a position of power within Grannvale-- a position he was nowhere near getting before defecting. Also not really necessary for this arcana, but the fact that you can only recruit him at the cost of killing his brother helps put a literal death association.

Patty: Devil

I actually originally had Patty assigned to the Lovers arcana, but I think this is fitting enough too. The Devil arcana typically deals with characters who commit immoral actions and have difficulty telling that what they’re doing is wrong. They’re led by impulse and temptation but they are also typically dedicated to a cause. Patty is a thief who steals to procure funds for the orphans her and her brother look after. Her compassion is her commitment and though she’s aware what she’s doing is shady, she still believes herself to be partly in the right because those she steals from are terrible people as well. She’s a more mature Dew in a sense. She’s not a perfect fit for the Devil arcana, but she fits it the most out of all the second gen.

Leif: Justice

Leif honestly probably could’ve fit a few, but I decided the Justice arcana is most suitable; the characters associated with this arcana typically are concerned with fairness and can be pretty stoic. Leif’s obsessed with enacting vengeance-- a theme that is just a breath away from justice. He’s the character I think of most in Jugdral that cares the most about karma and seeing people get what they deserve. Additionally, he fits the personality trend in how he attempts ( keyword: attempt ) to suppress his feelings.

Nanna: Empress

The Empress arcana is given to elegant women in high positions of authority. They’re typically a little on the cold side but hold compassion ( perhaps in a sort of motherly fashion ) for others underneath all of that. The second gen are almost all royalty or nobility of some degree, but Nanna especially came off as a princess to me the most out of all the characters. Additionally, God her JP voice actress really nails that refined aura. Nanna’s personality in my opinion also matches the trend in how she can be a little curt ( namely to Finn should he be her father as well as to Homer in his recruitment conversation ) but she ultimately is heralded for being kind and supportive by Leif.

Also gameplay-wise, the Empress personas typically end up having healing skills, and Nanna’s class as troubadour plays into this too.

Ares: Hierophant

Another character I was certain of what arcana I wished to assign them from the start, though I feel like a lot of people would think of different cards than I did. The Hierophant characters typically are fixated on the past and need to learn how to move on from that. Ares’s arc literally revolves around how he’s obsessed with killing Seliph to enact revenge for ( what he believes to be ) Sigurd killing Eldigan. Even Lene attempts to get Ares to stop being tied down to the past and to accept the present and the future.

Lene: Lovers

I went into this really wanting Lene to be assigned to the Sun as mentioned previously but ended up changing her to the Lovers which works out too. The Lovers character is usually someone who is popular and they’re tied between two conflicting aspects of themself. Lene is friendly and charismatic both due to her personality as well as her line of work, and her character explores her maturity as Ares’s confidant in opposition to how she’s fixated on finding her mother no matter what-- something that can be interpreted as a childish fantasy that’s hopeless considering how little of information she has to go on. Additionally, the Lovers personas gameplay-wise are usually healers and associated with wind magic, and though that doesn’t quite fit Lene, it coincides with it enough what with her being a support unit primarily and also both her cipher and her heroes art associating breezes with her.

Tine: Judgement

Judgement arcs explore characters realizing their true calling and gaining absolution and acceptance. Tine is initially allied under the Empire due to her connection to the Friege family, and she lived a very stifling existence until she defects. She’s uncertain exactly what she’s doing as well as who’s “right” at the time that she takes to the battlefield but she comes to realize that Seliph’s liberation army has good intentions. The truth that seemed so muddied before becomes so much clearer by the end. She also is another character who asks for forgiveness from Seliph and ends up being wholly surprised by how easily he gives her it. I feel like this implies that desire for absolution her entire life and it’s over the course of the war that she’s able to feel comfortable in her own skin and voice out her own wishes.

Febail: Tower

Ah, yes, the Edge Lord card. Regardless, the Tower arcana deals with bad omens and doom and destruction. The characters associated with this card are typically characters who have fallen from grace. Febail is unknowingly the prince of Jungby, one of the few playable second gen units guaranteed major holy blood, but he lives his life struggling in an orphanage and as a mercenary who will take any job so long as it gives him the money to provide for the other orphans. He loses sight of his own morality, needing to be reprimanded by his sister that his attempt to slay Seliph isn’t actually going to end in his goal of prosperity for the kids. Though all the kids have taken a tumble in life, I genuinely think Febail captures this concept the best.

Ced: Emperor

If there’s literally any character I think could actually translate super well into a Persona verse more seriously beyond just me assigning arcanas, I honestly think it’d be Ced. Anyhow, the Emperor arcana holds characters who desire to control their environment even if fate gives them trouble in attempting to do so, and the characters typically are suffering from a personal issue that they do not know how to tackle. Ced is a mage who goes out of his way to find his father and along the way, brought on by his own conviction, establishes the Magi Squad to try and help the people suffering in Manster from oppression underneath the Empire. That active role reflects the arcana very well in my eyes, and Ced’s personal conflict with Lewyn as a neglectful father as per FE5′s canon seals the deal.

Coirpre: Hermit

Hermit wasn’t my first pick for Coirpre as an individual character, but I gave him it pretty quickly after I thought about the entire second gen cast collectively as opposed to just standalone cases. I think Coirpre would most likely end up as the second, more powerful navigator character to recruit especially with his ties to the Bragi bloodline and the canonical Bragi connection to prophetic truth.

Coirpre doesn’t have the strongest connection to his arcana, but the Hermit arcana characters typically put themselves in situations where they are hiding away from the spotlight and others. As such, these characters are usually more in background or supportive roles in life. Coirpre is a healer in an extremely militant country, a larger anomaly considering the fact that his father is the Shield of Thracia-- a famed general. Coirpre, upon being locked away as a hostage, adamantly requests to be let go because he doesn’t wish for his father to be forced to fight; he seeks a more discreet way to solve the issue befitting of the arcana and ultimately sought out a calmer solution. Judging by his minor involvement in FE5, he also is more neutral typically in terms of alignment, not caring much for whether or not Leif was a runaway prince but also not offering to join him unlike the other FE4 characters who show up in the midquel. Coirpre keeps himself on the down low until he’s freed by the liberation army and realizes his father and he need to take a stance against the Empire more actively.

Altena: Hanged Man

The Hanged Man arcana explores characters who undergo arcs where they are caught between two extremes or two parties in their life. Altena encompasses this idea best in how she is troubled by her loyalty to southern Thracia due to being raised as its princess and her true lineage as Leonster’s princess. She is at odds due to this conflict, what with both parties being at opposite ends of the battlefield from one another and she’s forced to make a choice between her adopted brother and her blood brother.

Octopath Traveler Liveblogging

Chapter 2 for Primrose, Therion, and Tressa. As everyone except Olberic is slightly underleveled I’m doing these in order of recommended levels.

Also note that since this deals with story content past the opening chapters there will be spoilers.

Primrose

...Are all of her stories going to involve prostitution in some way? Not that I think that’s necessarily a bad thing since sex work is rarely addressed in gaming - and by this point they’re not even playing coy by trying to pass them off as dancers - but it would be kind of funny if her remaining two chapters found a way to work that in somehow too.

Stillsnow is pretty and chilly and not really the sort of place one would associate with brothel work, but I guess that might be the point. We can only assume Primrose found something thicker to wear off-screen like she said she would, lest this be a rehash of Silvia in Silesse in FE4. At least resident prostitute Arianna is dressed for the weather. The church of the Holy Flame also has a presence in the town, though that largely manifests in a bizarre interlude between the chapter boss and a priest who lost his daughter (gah, pseudo-Catholic priests with legitimate children again!) to suicide and is given one of the boss’s girls as a...replacement? That’s got to be some kind of milestone for weird and tangential incest subtext.

The theme of this chapter seems to be steering Primrose’s story toward a contemplation of revenge and the satisfaction it may or may not bring, but as far as JRPG philosophizing goes it works well in context.

As for the boss fight, it was long but not very difficult. I was grateful to have everyone with their secondary classes if only for the added damage variety, and my overleveled cleric!Olberic was indeed incredibly useful for both tanking and healing. I wished I’d brought someone who could cure status, because the boss has an annoying move that stuns characters for several turns.

Party banter highlights: Cyrus likes the idea of dancing but is bad at it, Tressa is the party’s designated little kid (even though the wiki says she’s 18 so she’s not that young), and Alfyn gets a no homo moment that’s probably more about showcasing how unworldly he is. The broader discussion of House Azelhart’s motto gets commented upon not by Ophilia but by Olberic, likely because it’s referencing faith in oneself and one’s convictions instead of any religious faith. H’annit has mementos of her deceased parents, which is notable as it indicates that she doesn’t see her master as a father figure. Fathers already feature fairly prominently in the stories of all three other female characters, so that’s good for variety.

Therion

Meanwhile the overarching theme of Therion’s chapters will be convenient eavesdropping. Also propositioning random people in taverns for information, in what we must assume is a totally heterosexual way.

I don’t recall it ever being mentioned what exactly Orlock was researching the dragonstone for, although reading spoilers online suggests that it has to do with blood magic or something like that. It doesn’t come across at all in his boss fight apart from perhaps his ability to summon a golem after his lackeys have been killed. He’s got an interesting mechanic where said lackeys can guard his weaknesses, meaning he can take damage but can’t be broken.

Oh, and Orlick and his former colleague were totally gay for each other, and all the “like a brother to me” denials in the world isn’t going to clean up that subtext. Interesting how we seem to be building up to Darius betraying Therion at some point in the past - another tale of jilted gay lovers?

Party banter highlights: First of all I have to point out that getting these conversations is an utter pain in the ass, and constantly switching out your party at every plot marker to check for one drags down the pace of the pre-dungeon segments of the chapters. Even doing that I managed to miss H’annit’s, and it doesn’t seem like there’s a way to go back and see them apart from YouTube...which I naturally did because there was no way I was redoing that long boss fight.

Anyway, most of the banter for this chapter centers around Therion’s profession and how the other characters react to that. Tressa doesn’t like that he chases rumors, H’annit doesn’t like that he steals, and Primrose would like him to add some more flair but he won’t because no homo (probably). Olberic surprises Therion by revealing that he actually has a mind for tactics and isn’t the dumb meatshield he first appears to be. Therion flirts with Ophilia either genuinely or to fluster her - I’m going with the second one - and on the other hand Alfyn wants to take the guy out for drinks. Given something I read recently on a sidequest involving Zeph, this is less homewrecking than it sounds; I think the overall intention is to clear the playable cast of their NPC connections and leave them free to be shipped with each other in whatever arrangement one prefers.

Tressa

This doesn’t really feel like it’s shaping up to be Tressa’s story, to be honest. Between the unidentified author of the journal she’s following and new rival merchant Ali it’s a little hard to see where Tressa herself fits in not counting her role as obligatory player surrogate. Ali is interesting, sure, but the problem is that he’s too interesting and too directly involved in the conflict of this chapter, both in how he introduces Tressa to her latest money-making scheme and then one-ups her and later in his attempted opposition to Morlock. Meh, from the sound of it he won’t be making a reappearance until her last chapter, but then there’s still the journal author hanging over her otherwise aimless travels in the name of doggedly ethical mercantilism. As to how this chapter works as a treatise on fair business practices, it...sort of does? Obviously monopolies and price gouging are bad and get personified in the form of an obese rich guy who won’t fight his own battles (like Oliver from FE9 only less delusional), but then we’re also supposed to be questioning the smooth-talking sales pitches of Ali and his father because it’s sort of lying? I have no idea, and at this point I’m more confused than anything by Tressa’s personal moral code.

Oh, and this is the third dungeon to be somebody’s house. H’annit’s first dungeon is a forest, can there maybe be another of those? Or anything else? I have nothing to say about the Omar fight, and overall I’m still finding these bosses to be fairly easy even when they hit hard. Having an overleveled tank who can also do group heals and revives is OP.

Party banter highlights: Not much this time. I know I’m biased since I don’t find Tressa all that engaging on her own, but the other characters don’t contribute all that much here either. Primrose gets a motivational speech, Ophilia might have a crush on Ali, Tressa and Therion continue to not get along (and not really in a UST way), and H’annit disapproves of Tressa’s love of money which is amusing from a gameplay mechanic perspective: a Rogue path character doesn’t care for the motives of a Noble path character. Alfyn gives her some advice on friendships re: Ali that will sound a lot gayer in hindsight if the game decides to start shipping Tressa/Ali

Facebook is just a notorious resource hog, either on Android and I phones. If you genuinely want to use Facebook, get into settings and restrict its permissions like video autoplay, use of a location, as well as notifications. Do you really want Facebook checking your own location? Autoplaying videos in Facebook (they play mechanically, whether you select them not) uses energy and data, and will be annoying and intrusive sometimes. – THREE FACTS.

• All the instruments I've played were secondary choices; the first instrument I played was a cello. When I tried to play a violin, the sound I got was scratchy, so my teacher suggested I play a cello because we didn't have any in our age group. Lo and behold, not only did I get a better sound out of it, but I got second chair and got to play with upperclassmen before we moved and I had to drop it. My second instrument was a trombone. (I know... I know.) I tried to play a flute first, but couldn't get a steady sound out of it even after like two weeks of lessons... It was so humiliating. The band only had one other trombone though, so... My teacher handed me one and asked me to give it a try. In two months I made second chair and got my first solo part- "If I Only Had A Brain" in a Wizard of Oz medley because I could play OBNOXIOUSLY LOUD. I loved that stupid trombone, but I dropped it too because I didn't wanna do marching band, which was obligatory past 8th grade or something. Lame.  • Aside from playing and dropping goofyass instruments that are literally bigger than me yet still miraculously portable, I also got it in me to teach myself piano well enough to play the Tetris Theme and parts of Clair de Lune before getting bored with it because I... never actually had a piano to play on. I just downloaded a shitton of free piano key apps, taught myself what the keys were and how to read the music, and went on to try and play them on my iPad. My screen was a little too tiny to go and try to play anything more complicated than that- anything where the notes were more than 10 keys apart were kind of a hassle. So I stopped... C'est la vie.  • One time a friend told me she liked my singing and I was so flattered and appreciative of the comment that I cried. I'm a functional human being, who knows what to do with taking compliments and accepting positivity, AND FURTHERMORE...

for “no particular reason” some thoughts on stuff I’ve watched/read lately

spoilers ahead but most of these have been out for a while by now

Beauty and the Beast remake

overall entertaining and well-animated, though I still prefer the original

some of the story tweaks were neat and I especially liked the subplot about the cursed servants becoming less sentient(?) as time went on

others were kinda unnecessary imo, the whole opening scene being a glaring example. also giving the Enchantress a bigger role is neat in theory but kinda definitely raises a few Questions

not fond of the autotuned lead singer which is even more obvious comparing soundtracks

the furniture designs cannot grow on me They Simply Can Not, you can’t get nearly as many lines of action or squash & stretch out of a hyperrealistic CGI teapot

on that note the original’s beast design is still the best design, shout-out to my family for calling the live-action prince a “surfer dude”

at the end of the day idk what to make of the LeFou Discourse(TM) but shout-out to the little bit where Potts was like “you’re too good for him [Gaston]” and all things considered I thought it was a biiit more than what those cynical meme posts suggest. mind I’m not sure what I would’ve thought if I didn’t know about the whole shebang beforehand

it was apparently enough to get the film banned in a few countries, which doesn’t equal Instant Representation Pinnacle obviously but ehhhh that’s another topic for another time

Maleficent is still the best live-action “remake” of the films disney’s been churning out lately imo my onion, but I can’t say any of them have really disappointed me? (unless the first Alice counts; all I remember is that it was weird, which I guess is a given considering the source material but idk live action loses so much charm. definitely haven’t watched the second and have no interest in thereof)

Universal Harvester by John Darnielle - if you recognize that name it’s because, as I found out after reading, he’s the guy who leads the band responsible for a song I had on repeat hell for at least a couple months after discovering it via this wonderful, wonderful "lyric.. comic... thing” </ungodly run-on>

if this seems completely out of nowhere it’s because it is. I’ve jacketed and shelved a lot of new books, and while a good handful catch my interest, few compel me to check it out before heading home for the day

off the top of my head the other most recent book this happened with was No One Else Can Have You by Kathleen Hale (heads up for a non-graphic image of hanging on the cover), which was... oh holy shit that was over three years ago I don’t read often enough nowadays x_x

that one started strong but, around if not at the point where the protag was making out with the secondary dude, took a sharp turn towards the cliche & general What Is This Fuckery. but I digress

seriously no image on the internet can do this cover justice, the vaguely vaporwave-lookin part is actually very dark and the whole thing shines like one of those rain puddles mixed with.. gasoline? oil?? whatever makes it rainbow-y at a certain angle

I only skimmed the inside flap description before diving right in the night I took it out, and I realized a good chapter or two in that I’d unintentionally picked up a horror novel.

well. kinda? horror-ish?? despite there being no killer on the loose, no supernatural monster on the prowl, not even an invasion of alien farmers federally paid to invade your small town, basically no imminent looming dagger above the protagonist’s head, it’s VERY unsettling for the most part and I gotta give it major kudos for that

<SPOILER class=“mild”>also huge shout-out to the subtle switch to first-person at a key moment, then scattered throughout from there on.</SPOILER> it was at that point I had to reread the description to see what I’d actually gotten myself into and decided I was gonna read this sucker in one sitting or I wouldn’t be able to sleep

(skip this bullet point if you don’t like vague ending spoilers) despite that it manages to leave off on a somber, even sentimental note. pretty darn satisfying, though upon further thought there are a few big questions left unanswered that probably should’ve been addressed. (/vague end spoilers)

overall I’d recommend it if you’re looking for an interesting little read that might send a few chills from atmosphere alone but also makes you think*. just don’t start reading expecting a chapter or two before bed will do help you fall asleep.

*yeah yeah I know “makes you think” is something of a meme phrase at this point, but screw it I like my media when it actually engages the viewer/reader for more satisfying payoff. I’m not a fan of the “lol intellectualis” thing anyway V: but I digress.

my god Laika really likes their bugs and creepy hands (based on this and Coraline at least, I’ve seen ParaNorman but don’t remember much). this is absolutely a compliment.

voice acting didn’t thrill me, with the exceptions of the old lady & spirit sisters, but got dang those facial expressions

magic worldbuilding left a lot to be desired but it took place in fantasy China(/Japan? as with The Last Airbender I think we’re looking at another fictional Asian blend) and I for one am a sucker for that so I can let it slide

climactic fight felt kinda shoehorned, when the moon spirit dude showed up looking like a nice old man I almost thought they were gonna go for a less confrontational ending sequence - which I guess it kinda did but also the obligatory “join me and we can rule forever” stuff came up. I dunno I liked the spirit fish form ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

don’t get me wrong here I did enjoy it, I guess I was just expecting a lot more from all the talk about kids being able to handle mature themes and whatnot? ah well the conflict wasn’t quite Good Versus Evil so that was neat

was the moon spirit just a regular old dude all along though? is the moon going to rise again even with him hanging out among mortals? is he mortal now?? how does the Plot Amnesia work???? can someone tell him who he really was even if it’s not flattering??????

Wings of Fire Book 1: The Dragonet Prophecy - Iiiii actually haven’t finished reading this one just yet, saving the last part for when I finish at least one mcfucking assignment, but here goes nothin:

if you take a shot for every blatant violation of Show Don’t Tell you’ll be dead three chapters in, not sure if that’s because this is a middle-grade book or what

that said I find the plot & its overall direction intriguing enough to continue and, much as I may internally groan at the repetitive characterization and disney villain dialogue, I thought it was worthwhile and already have the next book checked out ;V

what can I say there are dragons there’s a war and it’s a very interesting take on the whole “because you are the Chosen Ones we will raise you here for hero training” deal

there’s also some intriguing worldbuilding with regards to the “scavengers” and “the Scorching,” not sure how much those are covered in this book but a friend who recommended the series in the first place says it’s some kind of post-apocalyptic thing?? nice.

not really related but shout-out to that one commenter in Script Frenzy who told me it was jarring or weird or something to have my dragon protags straight-up eat a few human researchers. I mean they weren’t wrong and it’s not like the WoF good guys have eaten any people (onscreen, at least) but still. I don’t read dragon stories for the humans >:T

Qualitative Questions

Q: Do you think you receive more than you give or give more than you receive through community service?

A: Generally, I think it is difficult to compare giving and receiving. You give time, effort, sometimes money, which are all somewhat measurable, but what you receive is much less tangible. How do you assign a value to the satisfaction of knowing that you made a difference? How do you quantify the experience of seeing a segment of society that you couldn’t otherwise understand or sympathise with? You can’t, and so I think most people would not be able to give a good answer to this question.

That said, I would venture to say that there are more “lousy” or “normal” projects than meaningful ones, and so I think many people could fairly say that they have given more. To use an extreme example, flag day volunteers really don’t receive anything. How can they??

Therefore, personally, I would still say that I have given more, because I don’t feel like I’ve done that many genuinely meaningful projects. But I am open to the possibility that in my future I will be able to initiate and participate in meaningful projects because I will not have to fit them to my already-packed study/class timetable, and I will not be limited by what the school approves.

To me, it’s interesting to note that if what you’ve received is a genuine interest in the needs of your community, what you’ve received might lead you to give more. To cite a related non-community service example, I have been giving blood fairly regularly since starting University. I started partly out of curiosity, partly out of the knowledge that I was meeting a need, and partly just because I met all the eligibility requirements (because I eat too well oops). But what keeps me going back is the feeling of solidarity that comes from being part of a group of Singaporeans who care about our community, who see a need, and see that we can meet the need, and take action to meet the need.

I’m sure this phenomenon can also happen in the context of community service, but so far I’ve not experienced that. Or maybe I’m just too lazy to follow up.

Q: Is community service more about learning or serving?

A: It’s supposed to be both. They like to call it a “virtuous cycle”. As I wrote above, what you receive might lead you to give more. So, you serve, and in the course of doing so, what you learn enhances the way you serve.

This can happen because (1) you are inspired to give more, and so maybe you sign up to be a volunteer tutor for underprivileged kids after the project has officially come to an end (I did this once in my Secondary school days).

It can also happen because (2) you learn about the needs of the community you are serving, and are better able to serve because you change your methods.

That said, in reality I think most projects are too short-lived, and their structures too inflexible, for the participants to really be conscious of the relationship between learning and serving, which is why the common learning points people love to talk about are “I learnt about just how privileged we are to be living in Singapore! #gdll!! #csp #communityservice”. Not that it’s wrong, but I think it was really meant to be so much more. So most of the time it seems to be the case that community service is about serving. Go there, do your thing, and go home with your hours. Graduate looooo

Q:What were your motivations to carry out community service?

A: There are many:

Transferrable skills/knowledge

For law students who do pro-bono volunteering, you can actually learn tangible skills through community service. For example, at some legal clinics, the student volunteers are allowed to interview the people who come in seeking legal aid. This trains you to identify legal issues, and gives you an opportunity to practice interview skills and etiquette.

Sense of duty

“To whom much is given, much is required” – this is a pretty basic motivation, but can be unsustainable because it is often used to coerce. “Giving back” to society through community service shouldn’t feel obligatory because it can cause you to become calculative.

Doing it for the feelz

It is definitely emotionally gratifying to do community service; particularly, I think it’s very possible to develop a “hero complex” where you see yourself as the savior of the world because of your commitment to community service. But, a “better” form of motivation, imo, is when you genuinely appreciate that you have a part to play in creating a compassionate society, and you just want to act consistently with that understanding.

Experiential value - gaining perspective or experience

I don’t really know how to explain this point but there was a point in time where I had been doing a lot of “Corporate Law” and finance type of modules, dealing with rich property owners and their banks, evil corporations, bonds, debentures, etc etc and I just thought to myself: “I want to encounter real legal problems that the average person would actually be concerned with, and not just the legal issues of faceless corporations”. So I signed up for 10 weekly sessions of volunteering at the family division of the state courts, helping to explain legal processes to divorced/divorcing couples.

Q: Do you think community service records play a role on your resume?

A: Yes. It depends on your employer, but these days it seems like community service records don’t make you stand out at all; it’s more like, if you don’t have any, then you will be outstanding for the wrong reasons. So I have actually made it a point to make sure that my projects are registered by the school, even though I’ve cleared my minimum of 80 hours, because I want to be able to say in job interviews (and on other occasions) that I have surpassed the minimum.

Q: Do you think your upbringing has a role to play in your attitude towards community service?

A: Yes. But I think in our parents’ generation there was perhaps less volunteerism as a whole? So the particular aspects of upbringing that would be relevant to someone’s attitude toward community service would be more indirect. For example, your parents telling you things like “if you don’t work hard you will end up like that road sweeper” can give you an overly meritocratic, elitist attitude that is predisposed against community service.

That summer, Johnny Reb flier gave Pine Tree State a bench and also the following Christmas I received a group of weights. My life was in my hands and management. i used to be extremely driven.
